I agree man! I used to play this game on Namco Museum for the PS2 when I was a kid. I unfortunately have not played the actual arcade machine for Pole Position 2 though. But I have played the arcade machine for Pole Position 1.
I've been playing a lot of F1 23 lately and I've found myself thinking back to when I used to play the Atari console port of this game with my uncle. We've come a long way since then.
Oh, undeniably yes. It was such a difficult race to win. With numerous failed attempts because of me crashing, this was torture for me to get a really good score. This game requires quick thinking.

The trick of running at the side with no speed loss!!! We used to call it "The turbo"!!!
Yup. And it's crazy that the car can reach speeds well above 330 mph in this game. I've never seen an F1 car go that fast before.

No. I played this with a trackball. And besides, it's very uncomfortable for me to play this game with a mouse.

I believe it has to do with getting a certain speed.

This was played on MAME. I used a mouse for steering as well as the left mouse button to accelerate. For changing gear, I used the shift key.
