Tending to the Wounds of Homelessness During the Coronavirus Pandemic

- If you see a human down, you stop and help. That’s the message Wound Walk OC is sharing.
Founded by Michael Sean Wright, the group provides basic wound care and hygiene services as well as food and drinks to unsheltered people in Orange County, California.
“We can all agree that wounds need to heal. Without care, a nick or scrape can become something serious that no one should go through,” Wright said.
For most people living outdoors, their primary doctor is the ER doc, who can only stabilize their wound or condition, but then must release them to the streets where the injury gets worse and worse.
The Orange County organization acts as an in-between, helping homeless people with their injuries. According to Wright, for a wound to properly heal, it must be treated and monitored. “Our goal is to identify, triage, stabilize and get into a clinic environment,” he said. This includes taking pictures of wounds, knocking down any infection, and connecting the injured persons with a clinic to monitor their recovery. “We want to make sure we have a primary care physician to look at the wound over time.”
When COVID-19 hit, Wounded Walk OC scaled up. Everything had closed, making it harder for homeless people to get basic needs like food and water. The pandemic also disrupted nonprofit and government organizations' ability to provide homeless services to unsheltered residents. Wounded Walk OC increased their capabilities by offering handwashing stations and other measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.
“We bring sanitation to them,” Wright said, adding that they also question them about their current health, whether they have lost sense of smell or taste, do they feel hot?
Wright reminds us that we have the power to make changes and to improve the lives of those around us - and it is a rewarding feeling.
“That exchange we have with our friends out here - there is a moment of relief when they get their skin washed, when they get a band-aid, when they get wrapped - that is a moment that is indescribable.”
It's not up to somebody else, it's up to us to help our homeless neighbors during the coronavirus and at all times, Wright said. “We all have something we can do, and that we are good at. This problem isn’t going away unless we step up and do something.”

About Invisible People

Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.

Well said. The homeless (as usual) have been completely ignored by governments and the media. I was very worried about how Corona was going to affect those who had no home to self-isolate in.

This man is literally nothing short of a real life guardian angel for these people, have all the respect in the world for his attitude of, stop if you a person down. Very eye opening on what one's self is/or can do to help. And it doesn't have to be much, just listening does a world of good but socks, Gatorade and, fruit snacks are always a good bet. Love what you're doing, Mark. Really takes a man to turn it around like you did, have immense respect for you and what you've been thru to end up where you're at. Here in the Uk we have the NHS and it's free at the point of service. I'm shocked at how the US healthcare system works. It's incredibly expensive and cruel. Poor people, those who are homeless especially, fall through the cracks and it seems they're not even able to access basic healthcare without a cost. That's just unbelievable.

You are an inspiration always. I work in Petco and today in the parking lot a homeless couple and their teen son are flying a cardboard sign. Homeless, jobless, I gave them some hats I had in my car, asked if they need water, gave them five dollars. A little help, hope they find a benefactor. I make low wages but work in a very upscale area, lots of wealth around here. For some.

Oh I never even thought about with businesses being closed how that effects a homeless persons access to even water. I'm going to start collecting milk jugs and give my water to people or do something. We are all only a paycheck away from being homeless ourselves.

I just discovered this channel & I am so happy & so sad. I've been wanting to do this exact same thing in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) for a couple years & never made any steps to action. Thank you for doing this! This is such a fundamental ongoing wrong that people see everyday & ignore...it breaks my heart. This has really made me examine my lack of effort in helping with an issue that disturbs me deeply all the time. I will be looking into how I can join in helping in my area....I feel ashamed I haven't done that already. May the Universe bless your acts of humanity & kindness!!!

I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance.
I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live.
I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit.
I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck.
So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised.
I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts.
I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible.
I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade.
I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school.
I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration.
Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do.

oh my gosh it is unbelievable! homeless people are have good looking and before they become homeless they first contributed help to the city but how come the gov't did not take action and then help this suffering people right away before the winters to come in.

In germany homeless with an actual id-card with a "no home" entry as address get about 15$ a day for 3 days max per month for each city. After the 3 days they have to move to another city. At friday they get for the weekend also. So if they from wednesday to friday they get for 5 days.
A night in a homeless hotel costs from 5-10$ a day bit there are thiefs all around.
There is some minimalistic help for everything for homeless but it's difficult to find it sometimes because those who should give the informations often are too lazy or lack on interest.

This is a fantastic way of helping and has now given me an idea. I always try to help the homeless near where I live whenever I'm able to, change/food/time and compassion but now I'm going to prepare mini medical bags for them. Perfect. Thankyou. ❤😇❤
