Homeless Woman in New York City Has Brain Damage from Domestic Violence

- I almost didn't see laura sitting there in Times Square. Even with the coronavirus, New York City has many people around, although not as much as before the pandemic. I almost missed her in the crowd. Laura didn't look homeless, but most homeless people don't look like they live on the streets.
Laura has been homeless in New York City, sleeping near Times Square for two years. She was in a domestic violence relationship where she received four head injuries. Laura says she experienced brain damage and lost the ability to think clearly and concentrate on making decisions. The abuse got so bad that one day she just walked out and left, leaving all of her belongings at the time.
As a rule, we will never feature a domestic violence story unless they are safe from being abused. When I asked Laura if she is safe, she responded: "I'm outside, so I am not really safe," referring to the dangers of homelessness for women, but she is safe from her abuser.
Because of COVID-19, many bathrooms are closed. The nearest public bathroom for Laura to use is Penn Station, which is almost a mile away. Imagine having to walk a mile each way to use a washroom. It's extremely challenging for Laura to travel that distance by foot with all of her stuff, so Laura has to wait until a homeless friend she trusts will watch her cart and her dog. In this interview, Laura said Penn Station is four blocks away. I just looked on a map, and it's ten New York City blocks from where she was sitting - each way!
Laura shares how she feels New York City is not making it a priority to help homeless people during the pandemic. I've been told there are 130,000 vacant hotel rooms that are not being used. There must be case management and support services to place homeless people into hotels, so it's not as easy as it may sound, but it can be done and should be done. Sadly, in NYC, NIMBY (not in my back yard) residents in. the Upper West Side continue to protest homeless people being placed into hotels.
Near the end of this video, Laura starts to coughing, saying she is sick. We were socially distancing, and I always wear a mask, but me wearing a mask only protects her. I now hear in her voice that she is sick, but I didn't at the time. If I did, I might not have interviewed her. When she started to cough, I asked Laura if she has been COVID tested. She responded no, and our exchange after opened my eyes to the challenges of properly testing homeless people for coronavirus.
COVID testing sites are hospitals, medical clinics, and sometimes drive-thru facilities. As Laura shared, she would have to leave all of her belongings to go get tested. Going to a hospital is a longer trip than walking to a bathroom and back, and Laura may lose her stuff, and she is not going to leave her dog. Service providers are doing the best they can to respond to testing challenges homeless people face, but resources are still lacking.
Laura's story is an important story. I hope you watch all the way to the end. She says far too many powerful statements that I have room to list here. The one that got to me was when I started, she looks clean, she responded, "I am not clean."
If her story moves you to take action, there are tens of thousands of homeless women out on the streets, and we must end homelessness for everyone.

Housing is so expensive. Foreign investors using offshore companies buy up overseas properties to hide their wealth which causes prices to rise. 90% of Las Vegas property in 2018 was bought by foreign investors. In London Chinese oligarchs are buying property off plan and leaving them empty. Tax evasion by the 1 percenters are causing massive income inequality. Please vote a different way. 188 billion dollars a year is lost to tax evasion. That’s enough to fund education for four years. They’re basically stealing services. Charity shouldn’t need to exist.
I WOULD HOPE SOMEONE CAN SHELTER THIS LADY AND HELP HER.
URGENTLY, DISGUSTING THAT THIS IS HAPPENING.
Do you provide updated lists of resources for the homeless per state? You know, like food pantries, soup kitchens, where they can get a shower, etc.? If not, I'd like to help somehow.
I'd been wanting to create an app and/or website that provides accurate, up to the minute details on available beds at shelters and other resources for the homeless.
Mark you should have taken her with you, no one cares out there.
You didn’t see a lady in pink? Why did the US military spend millions designing camouflage? 🤔
"Homeless people are treated worse than prisoners", damn that's so true.
Probably because alot of money can be made off of prisoners. It's not right at all but that's how rich people think.
I mean damn, they have to use nasty bathrooms
Yes.. and some commit crimes to just go into jail or back in to have a roof over there heads and food each day. It is such a broken system.
@@laurensommers6444 that's actually very true. I knew someone who did that to survive the winter. It's soooo sad
Shes very articulate to have a head injury.
I'd let her stay at my place... it would be the 4th homeless person I let live with me... and everyone of them now are in their own place and have jobs... it just takes work and a compassionate heart....

I have invited several people to share my space many times, with understanding the goal was to save money and reach out for resources. I know personally what is means to be alone, without assistance, however things always take a sour turn, because most want to take over your home or won't respect some rules..like cleaning up behind themselves!! Suggestions?!!
I feel terribly bad for her. She doesn’t deserve her situation.
Nobody deserves to be invisible.
God sees...
If there is some way she can get to N. Carolina her and her dog can stay with me, I'm a female, I have a 2 bdr Mobile Home (she will have her own bedroom).

Brain damaged? She must have been a particularly eloquent and intelligent woman before the tragedy that pushed her out. What a lovely woman.
All kinds of ways to be brain damaged 🤨
Laura has such a beautiful smile and lovely disposition. My heart breaks for her. She can’t even get healthcare. 😔
What a brave lady, and she still keeps her smile, amazing. God bless her.
Jeez that sucks. She's such a pretty lady. I hope she finds a good, safe home and nice job
@Stay EZ My Friends why
@Stay EZ My Friends Just because she was called pretty?
@Stay EZ My Friends How does calling someone pretty translate to sexual appeal? I'm a straight female and I'd also call her pretty, what does that make me?
@Stay EZ My Friends Makes sense
@Stay EZ My Friends I did not mean it in that way at all.
I literally just meant that she is pretty, and when I saw the thumbnail in my recommended videos, I didnt think she was a homeless... I thought she looked too pretty to be homeless.
You shouldn't be so critical. Not everyone is a predator.
For all you know I could been a 10 year old posting this.
I'm so sad, honestly. I was homeless a couple of years ago (which I wrote a bit about and actually got on Dr. Phil in 2018).It's easily one the worst, most desolate, desperate, empty, helpless, scary, and lonely feelings to experience. Like the whole world has shut you out. To be essentially abandoned, forgotten and the sense of having no place to lay your head down or escape the world outside is a terrible living nightmare. It's pretty bad when jail is a *relief* ! At least, there I had a bed and was indoors. Amazing what we take for granted when things are going alright.
I count every blessing now, and am dearly grateful just to have a safe place to sleep. Nobody should be without that, ever.
Well you sleep where you can
@@alicewhitelhpw7517 Very true, absolutely. There is even a 24-hour Dunkin Donuts nearby here in Boston where managment has loosened up and some people take little naps inside during the night, believe it or not.

Hi Laura, I am a woman in my fifties and I too have a brain injury with issues just as you described them. From a stroke. And I am stuck in my safe house and have to rest in bed most of the time. Just can’t imagine how hard it must be for you to be in your current situation. Just can’t!!! And I can hear on your speaking how intelligent you are and at the same time I if someone know how hard it really is to have conversations and sound normal while your brain is totally foggy and slow and it’s hard to find the words. If you have the energy, please start writing a book about everything that you’ve been through. I loved listening to you and your wisdom and I would for sure buy your book to get to read more of your reflections and insights. I totally love your spirit and I wish for you all the best to come in your way. Sending all my love, all the way from Sweden 💖🙌🙌🙌🇸🇪
You see, most of the time, homelessness is just temporary. Sometimes, all they need is someone to help them get back on their feet. Contrary to popular belief, some of them are really trying. Thus, we need to help them become productive members of society again👍
When Christians, propagate that we need to get on our knees and pray. I told them to stand up that God gave them everything that they need. Two eyes to ears an able body and mind. But if God asked you when you die what did you do my faithful servant. And the person replies I prayed I preach the word of God and prayed prayed and prayed some more. God gave us each other. We need to help each other.
I am an herbalist. 22 years. I hope people out of my free will. I know they need a hand, they need a hand to guide them to teach them and to show them. I want for nothing. I live comfortable not rich by any means. But I’m comfortable. If there is a higher power up there. And he asked me what I did. I’m gonna tell him everything in my power.
We need each other so bad. I’ve been feeding homeless since I’ve been very young with my mother. And beyond that if I ever have a dollar in my wallet, I give it to the person in need.
Drives me bonkers. That some people would care to feed a dog in the street before feeding a homeless person. That was actually on a game show somebody was watching and doing commentary on the game show. The husband assured the wife that that was OK. I don’t have cable so I don’t watch TV blew me away. The person of comfort could turn their eyes away from someone in need.
Your words are very true.
Propaganda
@@DarlyntonO Sin is a Christian farce. Jesus said so in the christian death book called the bible. "Go and sin no more"~Chrst. Sounds like you choose to believe Paul instead of 'Jesus". Paul was a murder and a liar. Jesus said that too. So as Christ commands "go and sin no more". Spreading that crap is part of the problem. The word "sin" means "to miss the mark". Interesting. Oppositional references to "the mark". It's time for truth, not religious control propaganda. We've already had far too much of that.
Yes that sounds good in theory..but this so called virus has now put many people out of work, and greedy landlords have upped the rents to extortionate levels..there will be a general increase in homelessness that for sure.

She is disabled. Why can’t someone help her sign up for her disability and an apartment? I would happily do it , I did it for my parents and a friend.
Even when you get disability in America it doesn’t pay you enough to even dream of getting an apartment or living situation on your own.
I am 37 years old and disabled stuck living with a parent who used to physically and emotionally abuse me. Neglected me. I still live with him at 37 which I’m ashamed of every day I have to pay him $500 rent because there’s no hope that I can even live in a situation where it costs $700 or more to live with roommates.
Even though I’m not homeless I sympathize with these invisible people because I am one.
I spend every day of my life walking aimlessly outside. I walked for more than three or more hours a day usually 10+ miles just aimlessly walking. I can’t afford new shoes I’ve had the same worn shoes now for over three years. My feet hurt all the time.
Point I’m trying to make is that when you’re in a bad way you have no choice but to adapt. You don’t care about things like how strong you are or where your future is coming from because that stuff doesn’t matter. Every day is a struggle and you have to do what it takes to mentally deal with it. For most of us it’s not all necessarily healthy things. We just deal with what we have and then when we die that’s it.
Death is a state of permanent disabilit

I hope you're doing better! I dunno if people know how bad homeless really have it during this pandemic, in Edmonton, there is a tent city in the freezing cold, little kids in -15 degrees celsius with no jackets, it's horrible.
America does not take care of its people, especially the needy and the poor.
In Germany, the long term unemployed get their apartment rent and heating costs paid for by the government. They also get about $500 spending money a month and are required to do small jobs assigned by the unemployment agency or attend its work training programs. Older people with small pensions or people with disabilities receive money to plug the gap between their pension and roughly $850 in "Basic Income." Yes, these amounts sound small, but they are enough to stave off homelessness and afford some dignity. When you add up all the costs related to a typical homeless case in the USA, you find out that we taxpayers are shelling out about $35,000 per homeless person. Of course, most of that money is siphoned off by various homeless "services" and health care providers. Meanwhile, the people are still living on the streets. This homeless problem could be solved in a second.
Yep, yet the germans lost the war and was split in half, but still they somehow found money to subsidize all this social programs.
@Dick N. Uranus Taxes in Germany are not low. But the Germans are very proud of their social safety net and only the rich complain about paying taxes. Taxes are ridiculously low in the USA, especially for the rich. The first $80,000 of capital gains are tax free! Add to that the $24,800 standard deduction for a married couple filing jointly and that means that fully $104,800 can be shielded from taxation. As Leona Helmsley once bragged, "Taxes are only for the little people."
@@denisgut 'Lost the war' - born and raised in Germany, I can't even imagine the horror it would have meant for the world and for Germany itself if we hadn't been liberated from the insane Nazi murderers' terror. It was never a war 'the Germans' would have loved to 'win'.
The United States is much bigger population wise and land wise than Germany. You can't take Germany's system and put it in America that doesn't work. A lot of Europeans do not realize that states are very diverse. Tax payers in Wyoming do not want to pay for the homeless in California for a multitude of reasons, some justifiable, some not. Furthermore, because so many people immigrate here, having socialized housing would not provide incentive for them to work. Heck it doesn't give incentive for Americans to work. America is the land of opportunity, not the land of equal outcome.
@@pinkishtoast3561 Homelessness is mainly an urban problem. Large cities whether in the USA or Germany are comparable in population density. The "landwise" bigness of the USA is therefore irrelevant. On a per capita basis, the USA is even richer than Germany, $64,000 to $48,000, so this should mean the USA could afford a better social safety system than Germany. In Germany the people are content to pay 44% of GDP in taxes for their system; in the USA, we pay only 24% of GDP in taxes and we scream bloody murder. The only reason you "can't" take Germany's system and put it in America is the hard-heartedness and NIMBYism of this supposedly Christian country. It's all about your priorities. If you feel all government activity should revolve around preserving the status and acquisitions of the top 10%, then you defend the American status quo. If you want to create a society that takes care of the poor, for whatever reason, you are proud to support a system like Germany's. By the way, Wyoming is a raging welfare queen when it comes to comparing how much they pay to the federal government versus how much they get back on a per capita basis. Wyoming gets a net gain of $1,146 per capita compared to California's net gain of $41 per capita.

Empty Hotels should be subsidized and mandated to give up a floor or two to this pandemic as well as each one should have medical personal installed to do the testing and care for these folks period . What the hell is wrong with us! Please vote.
This woman should have been given a place at a womens refugee shelter for domestic violence victims. Its so sad she shouldn't be on the streets, she escaped domestic violence.
God bless you all!
Something big is on its way, be prepared.
She's been through so much and still have a light shining bright within her....God bless her spirit 🙏
Sweet lady
Made me cry
Hope ya fed her and helped her more
Thanks
My heart goes out to her .........shes attractive ......but yet on the streets ........how does this happen in America
She could help an older person in exchange for a place to stay.
I pray she will get shelter, get her health back I really feel for her and her brain damage I understand I've had a head inergery and have some brain damage.its frustrating its hidden and not seen so it would be very difficult for her life in everyday living.God is protecting you I'm so sorry
She needs to apply for DVR they help the disabled. Once she gets her approval then she can open a bank account and move to Mexico where she can survive off of SSD! The automatically deposit -
She qualifies for disability ! SSD and SSI! I have brain damage also! Get her to the agency that can help her!
Such a courageous beautiful soul. ❤️
This is making me thankful and sad at the same time.
Where is this woman today? Is she all right? What a dear soul. She needs help, and housing, and support.
I really hope she can find somewhere to live, very soon. She’s beautiful a soul who glows. Please keep in touch with her and help her if you can.
Praying for you!
Where’s her privilege? She’s right that money gets caught in sticky fingers of administration and politician’s.
What a good soul. I hope she‘ll get taken care of soon
Can't anyone in NYC help this lady
Most there won’t help the homeless and judge them
We need a gofundme for her!!!
@@lisaloghry3171 I don't think that's the case.. NY people are very friendly and always looking out for everyone else.. they share everything with everyone.. they share meals, trips and plane rides with neighbors..
@@Nostalgicguy2242Haha. What? When? I'd never had that experience. Tried asking for directions once when I'd first arrived in NYC from a lifetime NYer (obvious to figure out by their obnoxious accent), and they didn't know their ass from their elbow. I ended up learning how to get around and memorized the map in less than a month.
Either they didn't want to help or don't know how to. You're on your own on these mean streets of NYC.
@@Nostalgicguy2242 I call BULL!! I visited once and I will never go back!!! You couldn't pay me a million dollars a day to live there!!! The people are rude and self absorbed and the whole place is filthy and EVIL!!
You all can keep that sespool of a City.
It truly hurts to see ppl struggling especially if it kame out of nowhere i truly wish i had the power to help every unfortunate person that didn’t deserve the path they were given
The face of an angel.
I would pee myself before I got to those bathrooms ...4 blocks away !!!!😢😭😭😭😭
I am in awe of this young lady, she is beautiful inside and out. I pray she gets a home ❤⚘
Laura, I'm so sorry you had to go through domestic abuse and you had to leave all your things and your home behind because of that jerk. I hope you get housing and better living conditions soon.
I hope she has family that are willing to help.
Yes
Many survivors of abuse have ignorant family
So beautiful, you do such important work. ❤ 🙏🏼💖
i hope and pray she gets her house and her health improves.
Come live with me sweet girl I could use the help I can barely get around i was in a car accident my spine is messed up you would have your own room god bless you you sweet girl
Hoping Laura doesn't have COVID & she gets well ASAP 🙏
Not sure why men can cause damage to another human being and still live with himself...
Beautiful soul you are and this videos literally brought tears in my eyes....we are forgetting that we are a big giant family and people from all over the world are our family and they should really be accepted regardless of who they are, where the are from , what are their status or which condition they are in.....I really wish you a good luck and I can proudly say yes you are my family.....and things gonna be fine soon...just keep that smile always on your face🥰
I realy sad for you mam..God Bless you..
What a lovely lady. I truly hope she gets help. I am in the UK but if I lived in NY I would help her.
So sad, that some people think they have carte blanche, to abuse people down on their luck. You have my respect! I hope your situation improves as soon as possible. Your a good soul. x
