  • I almost didn't see laura sitting there in Times Square. Even with the coronavirus, New York City has many people around, although not as much as before the pandemic. I almost missed her in the crowd. Laura didn't look homeless, but most homeless people don't look like they live on the streets.
    Laura has been homeless in New York City, sleeping near Times Square for two years. She was in a domestic violence relationship where she received four head injuries. Laura says she experienced brain damage and lost the ability to think clearly and concentrate on making decisions. The abuse got so bad that one day she just walked out and left, leaving all of her belongings at the time.
    As a rule, we will never feature a domestic violence story unless they are safe from being abused. When I asked Laura if she is safe, she responded: "I'm outside, so I am not really safe," referring to the dangers of homelessness for women, but she is safe from her abuser.
    Because of COVID-19, many bathrooms are closed. The nearest public bathroom for Laura to use is Penn Station, which is almost a mile away. Imagine having to walk a mile each way to use a washroom. It's extremely challenging for Laura to travel that distance by foot with all of her stuff, so Laura has to wait until a homeless friend she trusts will watch her cart and her dog. In this interview, Laura said Penn Station is four blocks away. I just looked on a map, and it's ten New York City blocks from where she was sitting - each way!
    Laura shares how she feels New York City is not making it a priority to help homeless people during the pandemic. I've been told there are 130,000 vacant hotel rooms that are not being used. There must be case management and support services to place homeless people into hotels, so it's not as easy as it may sound, but it can be done and should be done. Sadly, in NYC, NIMBY (not in my back yard) residents in. the Upper West Side continue to protest homeless people being placed into hotels.
    Near the end of this video, Laura starts to coughing, saying she is sick. We were socially distancing, and I always wear a mask, but me wearing a mask only protects her. I now hear in her voice that she is sick, but I didn't at the time. If I did, I might not have interviewed her. When she started to cough, I asked Laura if she has been COVID tested. She responded no, and our exchange after opened my eyes to the challenges of properly testing homeless people for coronavirus.
    COVID testing sites are hospitals, medical clinics, and sometimes drive-thru facilities. As Laura shared, she would have to leave all of her belongings to go get tested. Going to a hospital is a longer trip than walking to a bathroom and back, and Laura may lose her stuff, and she is not going to leave her dog. Service providers are doing the best they can to respond to testing challenges homeless people face, but resources are still lacking.
    Laura's story is an important story. I hope you watch all the way to the end. She says far too many powerful statements that I have room to list here. The one that got to me was when I started, she looks clean, she responded, "I am not clean."
    If her story moves you to take action, there are tens of thousands of homeless women out on the streets, and we must end homelessness for everyone.

      Housing is so expensive. Foreign investors using offshore companies buy up overseas properties to hide their wealth which causes prices to rise. 90% of Las Vegas property in 2018 was bought by foreign investors. In London Chinese oligarchs are buying property off plan and leaving them empty. Tax evasion by the 1 percenters are causing massive income inequality. Please vote a different way. 188 billion dollars a year is lost to tax evasion. That’s enough to fund education for four years. They’re basically stealing services. Charity shouldn’t need to exist.

      Do you provide updated lists of resources for the homeless per state? You know, like food pantries, soup kitchens, where they can get a shower, etc.? If not, I'd like to help somehow.
      I'd been wanting to create an app and/or website that provides accurate, up to the minute details on available beds at shelters and other resources for the homeless.

    I'm so sad, honestly. I was homeless a couple of years ago (which I wrote a bit about and actually got on Dr. Phil in 2018).It's easily one the worst, most desolate, desperate, empty, helpless, scary, and lonely feelings to experience. Like the whole world has shut you out. To be essentially abandoned, forgotten and the sense of having no place to lay your head down or escape the world outside is a terrible living nightmare. It's pretty bad when jail is a *relief* ! At least, there I had a bed and was indoors. Amazing what we take for granted when things are going alright.

      When Christians, propagate that we need to get on our knees and pray. I told them to stand up that God gave them everything that they need. Two eyes to ears an able body and mind. But if God asked you when you die what did you do my faithful servant. And the person replies I prayed I preach the word of God and prayed prayed and prayed some more. God gave us each other. We need to help each other.
      I am an herbalist. 22 years. I hope people out of my free will. I know they need a hand, they need a hand to guide them to teach them and to show them. I want for nothing. I live comfortable not rich by any means. But I’m comfortable. If there is a higher power up there. And he asked me what I did. I’m gonna tell him everything in my power.
      We need each other so bad. I’ve been feeding homeless since I’ve been very young with my mother. And beyond that if I ever have a dollar in my wallet, I give it to the person in need.
      Drives me bonkers. That some people would care to feed a dog in the street before feeding a homeless person. That was actually on a game show somebody was watching and doing commentary on the game show. The husband assured the wife that that was OK. I don’t have cable so I don’t watch TV blew me away. The person of comfort could turn their eyes away from someone in need.

    • @scottlewis1479
      @scottlewis1479 3 роки тому +3

      Even when you get disability in America it doesn’t pay you enough to even dream of getting an apartment or living situation on your own.
      I am 37 years old and disabled stuck living with a parent who used to physically and emotionally abuse me. Neglected me. I still live with him at 37 which I’m ashamed of every day I have to pay him $500 rent because there’s no hope that I can even live in a situation where it costs $700 or more to live with roommates.
      Even though I’m not homeless I sympathize with these invisible people because I am one.
      I spend every day of my life walking aimlessly outside. I walked for more than three or more hours a day usually 10+ miles just aimlessly walking. I can’t afford new shoes I’ve had the same worn shoes now for over three years. My feet hurt all the time.
      Point I’m trying to make is that when you’re in a bad way you have no choice but to adapt. You don’t care about things like how strong you are or where your future is coming from because that stuff doesn’t matter. Every day is a struggle and you have to do what it takes to mentally deal with it. For most of us it’s not all necessarily healthy things. We just deal with what we have and then when we die that’s it.
      Death is a state of permanent disabilit

  • @prieten49

    In Germany, the long term unemployed get their apartment rent and heating costs paid for by the government. They also get about $500 spending money a month and are required to do small jobs assigned by the unemployment agency or attend its work training programs. Older people with small pensions or people with disabilities receive money to plug the gap between their pension and roughly $850 in "Basic Income." Yes, these amounts sound small, but they are enough to stave off homelessness and afford some dignity. When you add up all the costs related to a typical homeless case in the USA, you find out that we taxpayers are shelling out about $35,000 per homeless person. Of course, most of that money is siphoned off by various homeless "services" and health care providers. Meanwhile, the people are still living on the streets. This homeless problem could be solved in a second.

      @Dick N. Uranus Taxes in Germany are not low. But the Germans are very proud of their social safety net and only the rich complain about paying taxes. Taxes are ridiculously low in the USA, especially for the rich. The first $80,000 of capital gains are tax free! Add to that the $24,800 standard deduction for a married couple filing jointly and that means that fully $104,800 can be shielded from taxation. As Leona Helmsley once bragged, "Taxes are only for the little people."

      The United States is much bigger population wise and land wise than Germany. You can't take Germany's system and put it in America that doesn't work. A lot of Europeans do not realize that states are very diverse. Tax payers in Wyoming do not want to pay for the homeless in California for a multitude of reasons, some justifiable, some not. Furthermore, because so many people immigrate here, having socialized housing would not provide incentive for them to work. Heck it doesn't give incentive for Americans to work. America is the land of opportunity, not the land of equal outcome.

    • @prieten49
      @prieten49 3 роки тому +1

      @@pinkishtoast3561 Homelessness is mainly an urban problem. Large cities whether in the USA or Germany are comparable in population density. The "landwise" bigness of the USA is therefore irrelevant. On a per capita basis, the USA is even richer than Germany, $64,000 to $48,000, so this should mean the USA could afford a better social safety system than Germany. In Germany the people are content to pay 44% of GDP in taxes for their system; in the USA, we pay only 24% of GDP in taxes and we scream bloody murder. The only reason you "can't" take Germany's system and put it in America is the hard-heartedness and NIMBYism of this supposedly Christian country. It's all about your priorities. If you feel all government activity should revolve around preserving the status and acquisitions of the top 10%, then you defend the American status quo. If you want to create a society that takes care of the poor, for whatever reason, you are proud to support a system like Germany's. By the way, Wyoming is a raging welfare queen when it comes to comparing how much they pay to the federal government versus how much they get back on a per capita basis. Wyoming gets a net gain of $1,146 per capita compared to California's net gain of $41 per capita.
