I admire your tenacity and your abilities. And I don't know your medical history, but take it from a guy that has done too much heavy lifting over a lifetime, you will eventually wear those shoulders out and will probably need surgery. I've had three and will probably have another one by winter time. It's no picnic but it allows me to keep on doing what I love most. I work alone ninety nine percent of the time. I use some heavy equipment and chainsaws quite often. I shouldn't be doing it at my age (71) but when my time comes they will probably have to drag me off a job, lol. You do amazing work. I've been a Hoser for my entire career of 43 years... now retired. So I feel qualified to tell you to use a backup wrench when tightening the hydraulic hoses. You torqued those hoses pretty severely which will shorten their lifespan. I'm a Total Huge Fan so it kills me to correct you on anything!! Give it hell my friend! @Rob Crow, I noticed that also. When ever removing or installing a hydraulic hose or fittings it's a two wrench job. Andrew caught the leak quickly as you could see it start spray the camera of Camarata.

Your goat question: Short answer is almost. They will strip everything to dirt that they can reach BUT won't eat things with bark. Young 1" trees is just about the limit. What you end up with is a very weird dystopian landscape of dirt, stripped trees to about 6' in the air. It really a weird things to see. But if you just have is grass, brush and very young trees, all that's left after they are done are piles of poo.
Before I saw the video all the way through, I read this comment and was really curious what greatest of all time question Andrew asked. Didn’t realize it was literally a question about goats.
Yes to all of this, and one thing that seemed to have been forgotten over time, cloven hooved animals do something to the earth, not sure we quite have a grasp on it, scientifically, but when you run them on the land, especially ruminants, the natural grasses wil come back. I've heard dozens of testimonials about how ancient grasses come back, in areas where it's been gone 300-400 years. The only way to really explain it is that the seeds lay dormant, indefinitely, and are just waiting for the hooves, sun, and poop to activate them to sprout.
I laughed when you said goats were an appealing idea. They do eat just about any weed or grass, and even little trees. They are used around us for that reason. Keep up the great vids!

Once when I was 14 my friend and I ran over fence in my 57 international. It wound the front right hub and drive line up with wire. We then thought that we could put it in reverse and gun it to unwind it...we spent two weeks after school clipping wire off all four hubs and the drive line was like a spool of thread. I'd forgotten about that until you pulled the blades off the brush mower. Thanks for the memories
Definitely NOT a good idea, since the moulcher is only meant for 30gpm. Pushing 100 trough it will cause it to overspeed and maybe even trow a teeth or something. Plus that wouldn't even solve the problem, since the motor doesn't produce enough tork. What he could have done is get the bigger motor with 150cc instead of 100. Thought that will decrease the maximum speed, it will also increase the maximum torque.
I might not lose any limbs.@@techtastisch7569 This is probably the max for the average operator. Andrew would likely be safe/comfortable with more power but liability is probably the limiting factor. I could tear up 1/2 of hell with this thing and only lose a songle limb.
I just watched Andrew mow down a large tract of overgrown land. It was mindless. My blood pressure went down. I was at peace. Satisfaction. I can imagine the smell of cut grass and saplings. Sipping my afternoon coffee. Kids in their rooms. Inner peace.

@@AndrewCamarata I have the mulcher now I am looking at the same machine you have. Takeuchi TL12V-2 advertised flow rates are 88lts per min the Hi Flow 153lts min. Are they the same as your machine.
That wasn’t anger. That was frustration. When you’ve got that many moving parts in your life. Sometimes it’s frustrating. The fact that he didn’t edit it out is what I thought was interesting. Because at the end he then offered up a juxtaposition. This guy is one talented individual!
Fence wire, the bane of all rotary mowers. Good thing AC just happened to have his 1" impact wrench with him. I think the mulcher would benefit from having more cutters on the bottom so when you came down on a tree it would cut for the entire radius of the wheel. Andrew, you really did improve your technique as you got the hang of using the new mulcher. Great video.
That is a nice brush cutter - handles much more material than a rear mount PTO style for tractors. Definitely keep the wire cleaned out. Once it gets around the hub it will eventually take the seal out and then you lose the hydraulic motor. Keep up the great videos.
There are wrench flats on those hydraulic hoses so that you can hold the hose so that you do not twist it when you are tightening the fittings. Your hoses will last longer if there is no twisting tension in them when you are using them under pressure.
We use Goats in the south to clear Kudzu and other small brush. There are a FEW things they don't eat, but they go after all the leaves. Pin them in where it is literally impassable and they'll much everything green they can reach. You'll still have to clear the woody vines and you can choose what trees you save at that point. Lots of stuff down here can be burned, though. Clears the plants that can't hack it and leaves only the Longleaf pines.

I thought it was odd that he blamed the power issue on the mulcher. The skid steer provided all the power. The mulcher is just an attachment being driven by the skid steer. His bull in a China shop approach gave way to a more finessed approach and he seemed to figure out what it could handle.
@@cancermonkey7334 yes, the machine provide the power; but if the motor on the moulcher only can cycle lets say 18 psi before the overflow valve opens, then that's what you're gonna get even if the pump can push 24 psi through a system.
I love that you have hearing protection. Leather gloves are great for handling barbed wire and rusty sheet metal. I have a plastic lidded box for my PPE. I keep my wide brim hat with the neck cloth, a set of sweat bands (that you probably don't need) my ear protection, safety goggles and work gloves. All my PPE is all together all the time and I put it in what ever I am driving that day.
I'm a tow truck operator by trade. I like motorcycles and audio. I have no interest in property maintenance or construction. Yet I can watch hours of these videos. Keep up the great work Andrew.

Hey Andrew, i just stumbled onto your channel recently and i'm glad that i found you. I used to be alot like you a few years ago, however doing everything on my own and the incredibly hard work isn't what stopped my game. I had just started a new family and i loved working like a mad man to make sure they wanted for nothing. For what ever reason though, my now ex wife offereded me zero support or appreciation. After a while i began to lose my reason for being or doing anything. What happened next is not anything that i can share at this time. I've trimmed trees for the power company since 1986, and I've seen different tree grinders, but not the one with the disc grinder like you've got. That's pretty awesome, and good job.
Suggestion: Whenever the load is overpowering your equipment, cut back the load. With thick, thick brush, take a slow perimeter cut around the field and then take half-width swaths. Adjusted properly, you'll find yourself going almost full speed. The old saying goes, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." If your equipment is always gagging, feed it smaller bites.
That is a ton of work for 2 days! Awesome job! We have a diamond brand 6’ high flow on a 120 asv forestry tracked loader and it’s amazing, there is certainly a learning curve to running it but once you get the hang of it it’s irreplaceable, great video :)
Based on the video, do you think your high flow has much more power? I am considering upgrading, but its expensive and I want to make sure its worth it.
Ya I would say a lot more power, I think they advertise that it will mulch up to 6” and cut trees up to 16” the only trouble I have is with birch because it’s super stringy wood, but like a 6” pine it would mulch it through the top so fast it would snap the top of the tree off before it pulled the whole thing through, they are expensive it may be worth renting one for a day or 2 to see how u like it, our power company uses the drum style to clear power lines with and it seems to work well also but I don’t have hands on experience with that style.

I always love the look of a dog lying flat on the floor like that! It can be hard concrete and he/she doesn't even care. Could as well be a super comfy carpet or blanket.

The barn was another job! He clean it up inside and out removed a lean-to side of it ! The owner is going to restore it ! Go back you can watch him clean it up!
@@KG-yn9qi , They removed the rotten wood and got it down to the structurally intrieguty. It looks like all post and beam with not one nail used in the structure. Nails will create rust and rot because they weren't galvanized back then. They used wooden pegs. That is why the structure is still standing and has lasted for so long. Roofs come and go.

That mulching blade is the same we use on feller bunchers round here minus the upper and lower teeth and the blade on the feller buncher weighs 600 pounds but they usually have a 450 cat motor pushing the hydrolics and a 6 inch pine tree will almost stop the balde if you sink it into it too quick skid steers just dont have the flow needed to really keep that head going unfortunately
@@dddddyyn not more powerful, more purpose built. You could run a skiddy with the same HP as long as it has high flow + auxiliary hydraulic cooler. Forestry mulching with a skid steer (or really any small piece of equipment) is all an experiment right now... this is one of the only jobs that will push a CTL to its limit.
Well it was an interesting evaluation, each has their own merits. I was impressed by what the mulcher could do. but definitely not the price for only 4ft'r. but like Andrew says it takes a while to get used to it. but still a lot of money for that size and ability. but great video Andrew! enjoyed every minute of it. thanks for sharing.

Andrew, I'm sure you've already figured out why the skid steer has a hard time with brush cutters. But for those that don't, the main problem with not being able to keep the cutter spinning is the hydraulic oil has gotten too hot. That's not a problem with just Andrews' mower, the skid steer platform as a tool carrier doesn't have the capacity to carry enough oil or the capability to sufficiently keep cool the oil it does use, not even including the lack of HP shared by all skid steers. Hydraulic oil temperature that exceeds 175 or 180 won't get work done and doesn't have the lubricating ability that the equipment needs. (hard on seals, valves, pumps, etc.) Even the so-called 'hi-flow' skid steers are really challenged with cutters.
Good vid. For me it just reinforced the idea of how much you can do with the brush hog. The mulcher i'm sure will be effective after you learn to 'drive around it' and develop patience for it. I would definitely do everything I could with the brush hog and then come back for the problem areas with the slow mulcher.

For the amount of energy in this channel and its videos, it's always funny to me when it starts with a focus on something as mundane as a dog laying on its side, bored, waiting for something to happen. The idea that Andrew is ever "idle" strikes me as bizarre lol
When you are running that mulcher, and trying to shred a felled tree allow the tip to droop a little rather than keeping it flat. Think of it as shaving the ground with the front edge of the disc and not the bottom. Running it flat is more for grinding stumps and such. You are right though, your head speed seems slow like your flow is inadequate into the motor.
When mowing overgrowth that was previously grazed pasture, I was advised to start on whatever edge was opposite to the direction of blade rotation. In the case of Andrew's new, expensive, but frustratingly underpowered machine, the blades rotated clockwise, so one would start on the RH edge of whatever foliage area needed cutting - as we see being done from 19:44 with the older machine. That way the debris would (should?) get flung out instead of being drawn in. Mulching may require a second pass over the debris with a different machine - as we see from 32:20.
@@BrianSmith-ow9gy Depending on where one started - yes. In some cases i might have been guilty of firing grass clippings into ponds & streams if I'd started at the outer edge, therefore I started in the middle, and then mowed a couple of strips 'inward' before starting the a-clockwise rotation of the mowing machine. It didn't always work.
That brush hog is amazing, very efficient and effective. Makes much more sense to have the working implement in front of you where you can see it than behind on a 3 point hitch. Also you have it on the much more maneuverable skid steer. The mulcher does not seem that useful to actually get a lot of work done. Many of those trees you are playing with could have been down and chopped up way faster with a chainsaw in the right hands. Thanks for this informative video.
@@jackrich821 That mulcher was supposedly a low flow attachment as Andrew stated at the end of the video. Ane even for a low flow attachment it should have had more power than that, it even bogged down on stuff that the brush hog dident even flinch on. I honestly think there was something wrong with the hydraulic motor on that mulcher, it was making weird and funny noises during spoolup, and beeing that hesitant/slow/sluggish to spool up is a dead giveaway that its not gonna have much power.
@@KD-wg4tn Andrew needed something that works best with the machine he currently has which is a Standard Flow machine which is why the brush cutter he has appears to be a great match for his machine. Heavy Duty Clearing Mowers like: www.skidsteersolutions.com/typhoon-skid-steer-clearing-mower-eterra/ OR Disc Mulchers are always asking a lot of a Standard Flow machine, but it's the art of practice and repetition that got it working just right. Once Andrew figured out how to feed the trees into the mulchers in his approach (certainly EASIER said than done, I have tried), it showed. When Andrew makes the jump for High Flow, we will be there to get them outfitted. :D
In Arizona, they’ll bring 100 - 200 sheep to clear a couple hundred acres of pastures in 3-4 days. For the growth you were mowing, goats are better suited. They’ll eat ANYTHING! There’s something very satisfying watching the brush hog and the chipper chew that brush up.
The new one is only getting up to 50% of the rpm that blade is designed to run thats why you're having so much trouble with it . Watch a feller buncher it uses the same blade but runs 4 times the rpm you run and the blade simgs like a space ship.
Yeah the TL12 is 23GPM, the optional high flow can go up to 40GPM. The mulcher head can take up to 30GPM. The head is just too light to keep it spinning with low flow.
@@jaybaar1 more flow, the TL12 is large but he probably needs a machine purpose built with hi-flow hydraulics. I know that Cat makes a hi-flow version of their 299 which is TL12 size so I'd imagine Takeuchi does a similar thing.

Should have gotten a DiamondMower or similiar drum mulcher. Would be more practical for those jobs as they grind up material much better and can handle a lot more at once before they stall. Those disc mulcher tend to get stuck more easy because theres way more room between the top of the disc and chassis for stuff to get lodged and stuck inside and stall much easier

@@ClinttheGreat, I have always used the torque method of tightening on 1 half of turn before you hear Snap. Its a good rule of thumb.

Your goat question: Short answer is almost. They will strip everything to dirt that they can reach BUT won't eat things with bark. Young 1" trees is just about the limit. What you end up with is a very weird dystopian landscape of dirt, stripped trees to about 6' in the air. It really a weird things to see. But if you just have is grass, brush and very young trees, all that's left after they are done are piles of poo.
Before I saw the video all the way through, I read this comment and was really curious what greatest of all time question Andrew asked. Didn’t realize it was literally a question about goats.
Yes to all of this, and one thing that seemed to have been forgotten over time, cloven hooved animals do something to the earth, not sure we quite have a grasp on it, scientifically, but when you run them on the land, especially ruminants, the natural grasses wil come back. I've heard dozens of testimonials about how ancient grasses come back, in areas where it's been gone 300-400 years. The only way to really explain it is that the seeds lay dormant, indefinitely, and are just waiting for the hooves, sun, and poop to activate them to sprout.

Once when I was 14 my friend and I ran over fence in my 57 international. It wound the front right hub and drive line up with wire. We then thought that we could put it in reverse and gun it to unwind it...we spent two weeks after school clipping wire off all four hubs and the drive line was like a spool of thread. I'd forgotten about that until you pulled the blades off the brush mower. Thanks for the memories

That is impressive for a low flow mulcher. He definitely needs a 100gpm high flow machine. There is no stopping those beast.
Definitely NOT a good idea, since the moulcher is only meant for 30gpm. Pushing 100 trough it will cause it to overspeed and maybe even trow a teeth or something. Plus that wouldn't even solve the problem, since the motor doesn't produce enough tork. What he could have done is get the bigger motor with 150cc instead of 100. Thought that will decrease the maximum speed, it will also increase the maximum torque.

the skid steer solutions video shows the 60gpm version and it destroys trees. I think he needs a high flow kit for the tl12 and the high flow mulcher.

I think the mulcher would benefit from having more cutters on the bottom so when you came down on a tree it would cut for the entire radius of the wheel.

That is a nice brush cutter - handles much more material than a rear mount PTO style for tractors. Definitely keep the wire cleaned out. Once it gets around the hub it will eventually take the seal out and then you lose the hydraulic motor. Keep up the great videos.
There are wrench flats on those hydraulic hoses so that you can hold the hose so that you do not twist it when you are tightening the fittings. Your hoses will last longer if there is no twisting tension in them when you are using them under pressure.

Watching vids on you tube of upstate brush control and they use fecom chippers. Seems like a better fit for your needs Andrew in my opinion..
I had the same thought as they were unloading.
We use Goats in the south to clear Kudzu and other small brush. There are a FEW things they don't eat, but they go after all the leaves. Pin them in where it is literally impassable and they'll much everything green they can reach. You'll still have to clear the woody vines and you can choose what trees you save at that point. Lots of stuff down here can be burned, though. Clears the plants that can't hack it and leaves only the Longleaf pines.

I thought it was odd that he blamed the power issue on the mulcher. The skid steer provided all the power. The mulcher is just an attachment being driven by the skid steer. His bull in a China shop approach gave way to a more finessed approach and he seemed to figure out what it could handle.

@@cancermonkey7334 yes, the machine provide the power; but if the motor on the moulcher only can cycle lets say 18 psi before the overflow valve opens, then that's what you're gonna get even if the pump can push 24 psi through a system.

I love that you have hearing protection. Leather gloves are great for handling barbed wire and rusty sheet metal. I have a plastic lidded box for my PPE. I keep my wide brim hat with the neck cloth, a set of sweat bands (that you probably don't need) my ear protection, safety goggles and work gloves. All my PPE is all together all the time and I put it in what ever I am driving that day.

Suggestion: Whenever the load is overpowering your equipment, cut back the load. With thick, thick brush, take a slow perimeter cut around the field and then take half-width swaths. Adjusted properly, you'll find yourself going almost full speed. The old saying goes, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." If your equipment is always gagging, feed it smaller bites.

That is a ton of work for 2 days! Awesome job! We have a diamond brand 6’ high flow on a 120 asv forestry tracked loader and it’s amazing, there is certainly a learning curve to running it but once you get the hang of it it’s irreplaceable, great video :)
Based on the video, do you think your high flow has much more power? I am considering upgrading, but its expensive and I want to make sure its worth it.
Ya I would say a lot more power, I think they advertise that it will mulch up to 6” and cut trees up to 16” the only trouble I have is with birch because it’s super stringy wood, but like a 6” pine it would mulch it through the top so fast it would snap the top of the tree off before it pulled the whole thing through, they are expensive it may be worth renting one for a day or 2 to see how u like it, our power company uses the drum style to clear power lines with and it seems to work well also but I don’t have hands on experience with that style.
ASV and forestry mulcher is an whole different animal. It would smoke this thing in the video.

@@KG-yn9qi , They removed the rotten wood and got it down to the structurally intrieguty. It looks like all post and beam with not one nail used in the structure. Nails will create rust and rot because they weren't galvanized back then. They used wooden pegs. That is why the structure is still standing and has lasted for so long. Roofs come and go.

Andrew should buy an FAE mower head for that TL 12!!! Half the time to do all of that mowing, love your videos Andrew!!
Machines used for mulching seem to need a very high flow rate and plenty extra horse power to keep the head spinning at optimal speeds.
That mulching blade is the same we use on feller bunchers round here minus the upper and lower teeth and the blade on the feller buncher weighs 600 pounds but they usually have a 450 cat motor pushing the hydrolics and a 6 inch pine tree will almost stop the balde if you sink it into it too quick skid steers just dont have the flow needed to really keep that head going unfortunately

Yep, the mulcher wants 30gpm and the TL12 only outputs 23gpm. Andrew needs a more powerful skid-steer.
@@dddddyyn not more powerful, more purpose built. You could run a skiddy with the same HP as long as it has high flow + auxiliary hydraulic cooler. Forestry mulching with a skid steer (or really any small piece of equipment) is all an experiment right now... this is one of the only jobs that will push a CTL to its limit.

Well it was an interesting evaluation, each has their own merits. I was impressed by what the mulcher could do. but definitely not the price for only 4ft'r. but like Andrew says it takes a while to get used to it. but still a lot of money for that size and ability. but great video Andrew! enjoyed every minute of it. thanks for sharing.

Andrew, I'm sure you've already figured out why the skid steer has a hard time with brush cutters. But for those that don't, the main problem with not being able to keep the cutter spinning is the hydraulic oil has gotten too hot. That's not a problem with just Andrews' mower, the skid steer platform as a tool carrier doesn't have the capacity to carry enough oil or the capability to sufficiently keep cool the oil it does use, not even including the lack of HP shared by all skid steers. Hydraulic oil temperature that exceeds 175 or 180 won't get work done and doesn't have the lubricating ability that the equipment needs. (hard on seals, valves, pumps, etc.) Even the so-called 'hi-flow' skid steers are really challenged with cutters.
Interesting so what are these designed for? Could you add a big cooler to help them out?

Good vid. For me it just reinforced the idea of how much you can do with the brush hog. The mulcher i'm sure will be effective after you learn to 'drive around it' and develop patience for it. I would definitely do everything I could with the brush hog and then come back for the problem areas with the slow mulcher.

When you are running that mulcher, and trying to shred a felled tree allow the tip to droop a little rather than keeping it flat. Think of it as shaving the ground with the front edge of the disc and not the bottom. Running it flat is more for grinding stumps and such.
You are right though, your head speed seems slow like your flow is inadequate into the motor.

When mowing overgrowth that was previously grazed pasture, I was advised to start on whatever edge was opposite to the direction of blade rotation. In the case of Andrew's new, expensive, but frustratingly underpowered machine, the blades rotated clockwise, so one would start on the RH edge of whatever foliage area needed cutting - as we see being done from 19:44 with the older machine. That way the debris would (should?) get flung out instead of being drawn in. Mulching may require a second pass over the debris with a different machine - as we see from 32:20.
That would require doing the work in a circular pattern so that an outside edge was always available??

In some cases i might have been guilty of firing grass clippings into ponds & streams if I'd started at the outer edge, therefore I started in the middle, and then mowed a couple of strips 'inward' before starting the a-clockwise rotation of the mowing machine. It didn't always work.
That brush hog is amazing, very efficient and effective. Makes much more sense to have the working implement in front of you where you can see it than behind on a 3 point hitch. Also you have it on the much more maneuverable skid steer. The mulcher does not seem that useful to actually get a lot of work done. Many of those trees you are playing with could have been down and chopped up way faster with a chainsaw in the right hands. Thanks for this informative video.
Those mulchers need a shid steer with high volume pump …. That machine probably doesn’t have a high volume pump.
@@jackrich821 That mulcher was supposedly a low flow attachment as Andrew stated at the end of the video. Ane even for a low flow attachment it should have had more power than that, it even bogged down on stuff that the brush hog dident even flinch on.
I honestly think there was something wrong with the hydraulic motor on that mulcher, it was making weird and funny noises during spoolup, and beeing that hesitant/slow/sluggish to spool up is a dead giveaway that its not gonna have much power.

@@KD-wg4tn Andrew needed something that works best with the machine he currently has which is a Standard Flow machine which is why the brush cutter he has appears to be a great match for his machine. OR Disc Mulchers are always asking a lot of a Standard Flow machine, but it's the art of practice and repetition that got it working just right. Once Andrew figured out how to feed the trees into the mulchers in his approach (certainly EASIER said than done, I have tried), it showed.
When Andrew makes the jump for High Flow, we will be there to get them outfitted. :D
Problem is the machine rpm really isn't going down, just the speed of the attachment. Seems like the attachment needs a stronger motor.

In Arizona, they’ll bring 100 - 200 sheep to clear a couple hundred acres of pastures in 3-4 days. For the growth you were mowing, goats are better suited. They’ll eat ANYTHING! There’s something very satisfying watching the brush hog and the chipper chew that brush up.
The new one is only getting up to 50% of the rpm that blade is designed to run thats why you're having so much trouble with it . Watch a feller buncher it uses the same blade but runs 4 times the rpm you run and the blade simgs like a space ship.

Is it the machine that needs more power or a better mulcher?
Yeah the TL12 is 23GPM, the optional high flow can go up to 40GPM. The mulcher head can take up to 30GPM. The head is just too light to keep it spinning with low flow.
@@jaybaar1 more flow, the TL12 is large but he probably needs a machine purpose built with hi-flow hydraulics. I know that Cat makes a hi-flow version of their 299 which is TL12 size so I'd imagine Takeuchi does a similar thing.
@@BlackHawkBallistic yeah they do. I use one with a fecon at work and it rips. I was wondering while watching if he had high flow on but it must of not came equipped with it.
Should have gotten a DiamondMower or similiar drum mulcher. Would be more practical for those jobs as they grind up material much better and can handle a lot more at once before they stall. Those disc mulcher tend to get stuck more easy because theres way more room between the top of the disc and chassis for stuff to get lodged and stuck inside and stall much easier

30 grand and he'd need a bigger skid steer to even attempt to run one. Even this TL12 isn't big enough for that little disc mulcher

I feel like both have their advantages. Obviously the mulcher prefers the lower rate of travel, but does a neater job in the end.
