The drummer Michael Shrieve on this one is in the zone to put it mildly. Carlos Santana and a few bandmates took some acid early in the day thinking they didn't have to go onstage until late in the evening. One of the organizers told them they had to get on stage in early afternoon while they were peaking on the acid or they wouldn't be allowed to perform at Woodstock. Carlos said he was hallucinating that his guitar was a snake and he had to hang on tight to that pulsating snake. He said in a later interview that he prayed to God to get him through it so he wouldn't screw it all up in front of the huge audience. Carlos put in a very inspired performance trying to tame that snake lol. The band was barely known before Woodstock but afterwards based on their performance became a hugely popular band. See if you can find the version with the extended drum solo but both versions are awesome.
You need some live footage to see Carlos work the guitar, and his "guitar face" is as good as it gets. I suggest the Soul Sacrifice footage from the movie and concert Woodstock. Enjoy.
my favorite rock story: One sunday my friend and I decided to go to provo park in berkeley for the free concert instead of speedway meadows in san francisco. We didn't know who would be playing at either park but it was always free and good. We visited some university professor friends first and were introduced to afghanistani hashish for the first time (that's another story) so when we finally got to the park, crawled out on the lawn and found a place to sit, we were in no shape to leave if the band was no good. We got concerned because usually everybody involved with the rock bands we liked were white, so when we saw many 'non-white' people working the stage we thought maybe this wasn't going to be the music we had come to hear. There was a black guy in a funny hat warming up the bass; a guy with lounge-lizard hair got behind a big wrap-around hammond organ; there were conga drums and a little kid climbed up and got behind the drum set and there was some scrawny mexican guy with a guitar... Then a guy walked up to the microphone and said "Ladies and Gentlemen...let's hear it for a new band from the east side: "The Carlos Santana Blues Band!". They played their first album. They had recently been playing high schools and gymnasiums. It turns out that they had just recorded it and it was about to be released but at that point in time, still before woodstock, we had never heard the music before. We spent the next hour with our jaws on the grass... When the album came out, that's when they became "Santana".
Santana, at this time, was a BAND. 6 guys, all from different backgrounds and races, all contributing and creating a unique mix of rock, blues, jazz, African, Latin, funk, and more. Little by little the original band members left for one reason or another. Drugs, egos, differences in musical direction, money, etc. Carlos Santana is the only original member left. The Santana band, throughout the years and throughout all the different members, has always sounded great, with amazing songs and musicianship. But this original Santana band will always be the best. Carlos Santana - guitar Gregg Rolie - keyboards, vocals Michael Shrieve - drums David Brown - bass Michael Carabello - congas Jose Areas - percussion
Brother this is a fabulous reaction. Carlos and his band will make you transcend. Let me in a rarely known fact. This is an original Peter Green tune. Bill Graham caught Carlos trying to sneak in Winterland Auditorium in San Francisco where Fleetwood Mac were doing a sound check and in the end became Santana's manager. Got them booked in Woodstock and the rest is history...
You need to react to Santana's unbelievable live 1969 performance of "Soul Sacrifice" from Woodstock. One of the best live performances ever recorded, it will blow you away!
Keep going with Santana! The man and his band are so diverse and talented. Latin & African rhythms mixed with blues & rock guitar, and even some jazz. They're one of the few multi-racial bands to make it big, and it's some of the best music you'll hear - even all these decades later.
I saw Santana in 2018 phenomenal! His 52 yr old wife was the drummer. Mind blowing how good she is. They had a camera right above the drumkit and projected on to the Big Screens so everyone could see her outstanding talent. Listen man listen, she was on fire bra. 😊
The guy who does the lead vocals on this song is Greg Rollie co-founded Journey in 1973 and was the lead singer of the band until their manager decided to hire Steve Perry as Journey's main lead singer. Greg still did do some lead vocals on some of the album tracks for the first 3 Journey albums that Perry was a part of but left the band before the recording of the Escape album (1981). Making Steve Perry Journey's sole lead singer until he left in 1996.
Perfectly put. How I wish more people would discover those first three Journey albums. They are so amazing and different from the rest of the band's output. Even the soundtrack Dream After Dream is relatively unknown. Great prog rock, and Gregg's last album with the band.
Steve Perry was hired to be Journey's main lead singer, but he didn't replace Rolie, but Robert Fleischman, who left because he had signed with different management. He was their lead singer for 5 months. I had the great pleasure in seeing not only Santana twice before Neal Schon, but twice with Neal. When Neal left he took Gregg Rolie with him to form Journey. I saw Journey the first time they played in NYC. I then saw them again when they returned with Aynsley Dunbar as their drummer, who had just left Frank Zappa's band.
Santana is another 50+ year historical band. 50+ years of music that is precision and welcoming. He has had different singers in over the years. He has played with other groups over the years and promoted music along the way. You will get a list of hundreds of request. Sometimes singing and sometimes instrumental; all a "Treat" by the way which is one his best instrumentals.
Great reaction to an iconic song by the great Santana. I got to see him live in 1969 in San Francisco. You really should watch this song performed live. It is even more fun to watch 🎸🎶‼️
Santana is a guitar legend he has been around for decades and is not going nowhere he is as good now as he has ever been he knows who to team up with .
Thank you, this is such a good song, it goes great with anything. Love 60s and 70s music. Rock and Roll, Folk music, Folk Rock, Psychedelic (have heard some), Soft Rock, Southern Rock, some Outlaw Country and some Outlaw Rock. Have a good afternoon.
This song is so awesome! Fell in love with Santana's music in 1970 when it first came out. You need to find the live version. It will knock your socks off!
Santana has been making great music for well over 50 years now so dive deep, there's plenty to discover. I recommend starting with his earlier stuff from his first three albums to get acquainted to the pure raw emotion they deliver... if you do it will always be part of your music library.
In my 30's I rode my sin bike to Santana's album Shaman. I've been listening to it again lately and it's outstanding. It's Santana's collab with a lot of big popular musicians at that time. You should do a reaction to that album!
He is great in concert. Saw him here in Vegas in 2019 at the House of Blues about four times. He is a GOAT! Next songs you need to react to is Europa and Samba Pa Ti. You will not be disappointed.
This is the real Santana! Thanks so much for the review. There's so much more you can try such as Oye Como Va, Evil Ways, Samba Pa Ti, etc and their amazing Woodstock set (long version of Soul Sacrifice especially). stay safe xx
Love your reaction!! This is one of those songs that is so associated with an artist that many fans don't even know this isn't a Santana original. It was originally recorded by Fleetwood Mac - Yep, THAT Fleetwood Mac. Well okay maybe not THAT Fleetwood Mac if your thinkng Stevie Nicks. I'm referring to the original incarnation of Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green fronting. When they were essentially a British Blues band. I just heard the original version on B.B. King's Bluesville on @SiriusXM A show called "Different Shades of Blue" hosted by Joe Bonamassa - The Blues had a baby and they named it Rock & Roll (Thank you Muddy Waters). "Europa (Earth's Cry, Heaven's Smile)" ""Evil Ways" and "Them Changes" from the album Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles Live ""Samba Pa Ti" and "Oye Como Va" from the album Abraxis. "Soul Sacrifice" from the Woodstock soundtrack Here is a video link to the live performance. Carlos was so high on LSD (OR something similar)FOR THE ENTIRE TIME HE WAS ON STAGE AT wOODSTOCK. tRUTH, and he said later that the neck of his guitar kept appearing to him as a serpent writhing. He said he just kept praying, "God, keep me in time and in tune". ua-cam.com/video/JaaT_HRb4GU/v-deo.html
1970! Dig this fun fact. The keyboard player is named Gregg Rolie. He sang the lead vocals on this as well as "Oye Como Va" and "Evil Ways" before eventually moving on to become a founding member of Journey. Double fun fact. "Black Magic Woman" was written by the late Peter Green, the founder of Fleetwood Mac, who dropped this jewel on vinyl in 1969. I saw Santana the man up close once back in 1998. He was taller and skinnier than I expected. He was wearing a neat black knit cap and blue jeans. I don't remember what color shirt or if he was sporting a tie. I had a big grin on my face. He was with Edward James Olmos. They were walking up very large stairs surrounded by their people and other people on their way to an important event in the California State Capitol building. Los Lobos played at the party that night. It was a momentous day even if I don't remember all the details now. [grin]
Absolutely “Soul Sacrifice” live at Woodstock will totally blow your mind!!! Carlos is tripping on acid during this performance and he is literally one with his guitar and band!!!🎶👌🎼👍🎵✌️😎
Listen Man,, Listen,, This Is Another Legendary & Iconic Group That Often Toured With Santana & Have A Long List Of Classic Hits That No One Should Go Through Life Without Hearing...WAR "LOW RIDER",, "THE CISCO KID",, "THE WORLD IS A GHETTO",, "SLIPPIN' INTO DARKNESS",, "ALL DAY MUSIC",, "GYPSY MAN",, "SUMMER",, "FOUR CORNERED ROOM",, "WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS",, "CITY,, COUNTRY,, CITY",, "ME AND BABY BROTHER",, ETC..ETC.
Ha Ha HA! I'm a little behind my brother! I was just about to DEMAND that you listen to Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock. Then I looked over there on the right hand side & saw the link! Carlos is just, Carlos.
Yes, I want a t-shirt or a tank top that says Listen, man, Listen or this song is fire! V-neck for me and my hubby wears a 2-3X. Listen man listen, we can't wait! LOL 🤣. Great reaction! Love you HAZE! 😘💕
There you go, bro! Santana kicks major ass! There's so much good tunes, but I'm gonna say that you should react to the song No One to Depend On. It has Carlos Santana playing lead guitar alongside Neal Schon, a 16 year old guitar prodigy. Neal later founded the band Journey, together with Gregg Rolie, the keyboard player and singer of this original Santana band.
If you want smooth, check out his instrumentals. Europa, Flor de Luna, he's got some great ones. Back when I played in a band we did this, and that bassline in the outro was always the highlight of my night. Gets everyone movin'. Still doesn't sound right without Oye Como Va at the end though ha
thanks, Haze - Carlos is a unique "guitar hero" -- that sound can ONLY be Carlos, when you know it -- but he also has stayed "relevant" by working with younger musicians - he's not selfish, but just enjoys playing -- check out his hits with Rob Thomas & Michelle Branch --
You would have a great journey through Santana's library of music and it would be long too because he was jammin' before the original Woodstock festival! Ask your sub-fam for suggestions and hold on tight! Mahalo for all you share. 🤙😎
Yeah sometimes it's tough to go back and see what happened to some of these people. The bass player David Brown died in 2000 from kidney and liver failure. I know one of the conga players I'm not sure which one, wound up in a homeless camp in San Francisco and Carlos Santana went to visit him. That was like 5 years ago there's a video on UA-cam about it somewhere. Of course Carlos Santana is still alive but he is getting up there.
Masterpiece of a song, I love Santana. If I may make a suggestion, check out some Stevie Ray Vaughn. Either Pride and Joy or Look At Little Sister, a live version where he breaks a string and makes magic happen.
Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock. The one that's over 9 minutes long. You will not be disappointed. It is 🔥

Carlos Santana is the only man who makes me believe I can dance!
🤣🤣🤣
Omfg! There's so much more to hear! "Oye como va" next please?
I second this.
SANTANA "OYE COMO VA",, "NO ONE TO DEPEND ON" & "EVERYTHING'S COMING OUR WAY"..CLASSICS..TRUTH!!
Carlos doesn't do vocals, he sings with his guitar.
At Woodstock Santana had every 500,000 souls spellbound.
You need some live footage to see Carlos work the guitar, and his "guitar face" is as good as it gets. I suggest the Soul Sacrifice footage from the movie and concert Woodstock. Enjoy.

Carlos Santana - guitar
Gregg Rolie - keyboards, vocals
Michael Shrieve - drums
David Brown - bass
Michael Carabello - congas
Jose Areas - percussion
A great example of an artist covering a song and making it their own!
Santana Abraxas was an awesome Album 👍😁
Best damn musician to come out of Tiajuana
This guy played at Woodstock
Herb Albert and the Tiajuana Brass
Yes I want a shirt that says LISTEN MAN LISTEN

The entire band was tripping on acid. Carlos said at one point his guitar turned into a snake 🤯
_Way to maintain!_
@@sv3931 Yes, I heard him describing that very experience in an interview. Amazing!
I WANT THAT SHIRT MAN!

I enjoy watching your generation discovering these gems of music from my youth. They don't make stuff like this anymore. SMH
I will def buy a Listen Man Listen shirt. Bring it Haze!
"Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock, crazy jam. Thanks for the reaction.
I need a "Listen, man listen" t-shirt. Be sure to get some 2XLs!

Make sure to listen to the Peter Green original! Fleetwood Mac was surely something else in the 1960's

Nice to hear the word groovy used correctly and without irony.
This is the rock soul and latin rock, enjoy my dear friend :)
You've gotta react to Santana at Woodstock playing Soul Sacrifice (full length version)!
thanks, Haze - Carlos is a unique "guitar hero" -- that sound can ONLY be Carlos, when you know it -- but he also has stayed "relevant" by working with younger musicians - he's not selfish, but just enjoys playing -- check out his hits with Rob Thomas & Michelle Branch --
I would totally buy that shirt! And maybe one that says ..Fire As Hell
You would have a great journey through Santana's library of music and it would be long too because he was jammin' before the original Woodstock festival!
Ask your sub-fam for suggestions and hold on tight!

Masterpiece of a song, I love Santana.
If I may make a suggestion, check out some Stevie Ray Vaughn. Either Pride and Joy or Look At Little Sister, a live version where he breaks a string and makes magic happen.
This was 25 years before SMOOTH.
If you like this latin-african tune, you have to listen to 'Oye como va' also from Santana. You won't regret it 😉
