I feel like I most often encounter slab is when I'm at least 90 ft above my friends, 30 ft from my last piece, and at least 1,500 mi from where I really want to be, which is my mom's house, wrapped in a blanket while she makes me tea and tells me I'll be okay

I love a bit of slab at my local gym - it saves my arms and lets me take the time to focus on technique like footwork and balance and has helped me improve so much. I also feel a lot safer going for a hard reach when I'm on a slab than when I'm hanging off the wall.
I went a bit too far towards slab last session, though - I ended up with fairly fresh arms and exhausted fingers.
