    "A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 ballad recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick, and written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1964 film of the same name, starring Shelley Winters and Robert Taylor. The song was a modest hit in the United States for Warwick, peaking at #71 on the pop singles chart as the B-side of the top 40 single, "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)". Another version of the song, by Brook Benton, which was the version that appeared in the film, was released at nearly the same time. It debuted two weeks earlier on the Billboard Hot 100. Benton's version split airplay with Warwick's, and ultimately peaked at #75.
    Warwick's version of "A House Is Not a Home" fared better in Canada, where it was a top 40 hit, peaking at #37. The ballad made the R&B top 10 in Cashbox by both Warwick and Benton, with neither artist specified as best seller.
    Despite its modest initial success, the song went on to achieve greater renown through frequent recordings by other artists, including a hit version in 1981 by Luther Vandross.

    I had the privilege to hear Luther at a sound check in the early 1990's and he sounds EXACTLY like this! It was mid-day with no band, no taped music, mixing board, nothing but simply getting sound levels for the show at Reunion Arena in Dallas. He was in street clothes and I decided then and there that he had the clearest, prettiest natural voice I will ever hear the rest of my life. He was and always will be missed.

    I was lucky enough not only to have seen Luther perform live 7 times but I also happened to be in the audience for this performance as well. Absolute perfection! Anyone whose voice can affect you emotionally has truly mastered their craft and Mr. Vandross exceeded this beyond measure. Happy Heavenly Birthday! So glad I found this on his day!

    That's not an ordinary audience, Empress.
    That's the live performance at the 1988 NAACP Image Awards.
    The men and women there are studded with gifted talent. I think that's why the audience shows a tremendous appreciation for Luther's performance. They know; from their own talent, how great a performance they're witnessing.
    He really put on a show for them.

      Luther said Dionne Warwick was his musical inspiration, why he covered so many songs she performed (and written for her by Burt B), beyond their hit duet. He made them his in covers.

    Lawrence welk. One of the best shows of all time. Weekly event before music videos. An orchestra in different sets. Everybody dressed up doing whatever was popping at the time. But like just really good pretty session cats doing the hits. It's the kind of show you would want to do today. Imagine hearing a song on the radio and bringing it to your buddies and playing the brakes off of it because you and your buddies are the finest musicians on earth and you have everything every instrument and vocal combination live. Nadia's theme. Aka young and the restless aka no more drama is wonderful to mesmerizing.

    Towards the end of Luther’s tribute, when the camera zooms in up close on Dionne and she wipes away a tear, you can definitely see the family resemblance with Whitney. I’m sure she must have also performed at this event?

    There are a few singers I adore as much as Luther but if it was a competition for best male singer of all time, it would have to be him. It's just effortless, God given skill. People could learn to be as technically gifted as him but they would never have that velvet tone. One of a kind.

    This may be my favorite live performance by any-damn-body! (And so far - my favorite reaction by Empress💖). Luther was such a showman who knew exactly how to captivate and win over an audience with his spellbinding mastery of his vocal instrument! I also love watching the sheer delight from Dionne and other audience members! What he did with iconic song standards like this one and The Carpenters' song 'Superstar' is truly amazing! There are also some pretty humorous stories going around about what a DIVA he was, too! For instance, when En Vogue went on tour as his opening act, Luther gave then gals a list of colors they absolutely could not wear...and nothing on their costumes were allowed to sparkle!🤣 So glad you enjoyed this performance!!!

    For me, Luther’s voice is tied with Frank Sinatra’s as the best male voice of the past century. And both will still be listened to a hundred years from now.
    Was Luther gay? Yes. Does it matter? Yes. Why? Because Luther kept himself in the closet for fear of losing fans. He thought women wouldn’t buy his music if they knew he was gay. But he didn’t understand. They knew. And it really didn’t matter... Because.The.Voice.

      @coreydorsey4121 3 роки тому

      Unfortunately, it did matter at that time. Women may have suspected, but if he'd actually came out it likely would've ruined his career. The same way that singer or choir director at church was suspected to maybe be gay, but things changed if they actually came out and were open about it. We're talking about back when male R&B artists sales would drop if they got married, better yet came out as gay. A lot of women liked to believe those guys were singing to them and actually being off the market ruined that fantasy. It's actually part of the reason why some male singers would always say they were single, even if they were with someone. The image was just as important as the talent.
