Turlough is honestly one of my favourite companions.... I miss the days when companions such said 'see ya I'm off' to the doctor instead of the dramatic send offs of recent where they die and stuff.... Sometimes a solid goodbye is just as effective and sad....
I agree but tbh classic who got barely any character development compared to New Who as there were basically not many arcs so it was more focused on the story developing
@@harrymcsherry5272 True - Yeah, it's a shame really as there were plenty of interesting characters... Which sadly commonly spent their time just standing around waiting for the plot to require them to say a line before moving on leaving them with little development... I sometimes how stories would have turned out written in a more new-who style/balance.... But oh well, I suppose that's what the audios are for lol
@@harrymcsherry5272 Nu-hu hasn't got any character development either, just a lot of snogging & crying. Both shows started with the companion(s) being the main character(s), but after these initial companions were replaced, the plots took precedence.
@@FreeTheDonbasNot at all just look at Donna Noble, Martha, Amelia, Rory and Nardole (who had classic era-esque exit) all had clear character development over both episodes and their entire tenure.
The last 3 stories of Five's era feel like an unraveling. Tegan leaving in Resurrection of the Daleks, then Turlough in Planet of Fire, then the Fifth Doctor himself in The Caves of Androzani.

Would have loved to have seen Peri and the Fifth Doctor have a couple of stories together before 'The Caves of Androzani'... I wonder if Peri would be so reticent to be taken home if she had known what was to come... almost strangled, temporarily transmogrified into a bird creature, almost eaten by cannibals, lusted after by a mad, disfigured drug baron/reptilian creature/fat, bald midget with a ginger wig, witness to Earth's future desolation and then having her mind totally obliterated and her body playing host to Kiv....
Big Finish made an entire series between Planet of Fire and The Caves of Androzani, where they pick up a new companion named Erimem, from Ancient Egypt. They go on a pretty impressive run of adventures, but Erimem ultimately decides to leave them and stay on Peladon to marry Prince Pelleas.

13 years ago I met Peter Davison and Mark Strickson 25 years after Planet of Fire was first broadcast. I said to Mark Strickson that I thought Peter Davison's acting when he says goodbye to Mark was good. But, Mark Strickson said it was lazy acting. I love Planet of Fire cos it introduced Nicola Bryant as Peri and it reminded me so much of Dune which the David Lynch adaptation was released that year.
I really don't know why Peri asked if she could stick around. Knowing the way the TARDIS works, she wouldn't have got home anyway. Look at the trouble the Doctor had getting Tegan back to Heathrow.

@@Monocheto1 Nu-hu breaks with many traditions & continuity. For instance, in series 1 his companion wasn't his companion at all, but his girlfriend. And then once he regenerates into Casanova he snogs every woman whose name is in the opening credits, apart from the woman from Waters of Mars.

Think that was a John Nathan-Turner era thing as Tom Baker had question marks on his shirt in his final season. As did Colin Baker while Sylvester McCoy had a pullover full of question marks as well as the handle of his umbrella shaped as a question mark.

From season 22 onwards the Doctor seems to have mastered the controls of the TARDIS.

@@AndrewChapman Yep - that is JNT's influence on the costume design. I think all of the doctors under JNT's reign complained that "?" was too much.
