Sunningdale Old is just one of the nicest places to play golf ever. Lovely clubhouse and for somewhere of such renown, people are really friendly there too. The course is sublime, the halfway hut is also brilliant. I'm a rail enthusiast too and it's a five minute walk from the station. Ticks all the boxes for me.

Could have listened to that all night. Brilliant . Oh and buzzing for Painswick , played it 15 + times . It's without doubt the most unusual course you will play. Just to name a few quirks , Tiny greens , blind par 3's , wild rough , wild slopes , breathtaking views , shared fairways , roads and a graveyard :). All for £25.

What an amazing episode, that was so fun to listen to all that goes into designing a course and in some ways it feels like you just barely scratched the surface with him. What a great interview and Robin was so fantastic. It would be great to have him back again.

As a Golf Course Superintendent this is awesome! I really think people would get a kick out of inside view of the maintenance side of the course as well. You guys could get some really awesome and interesting video of what it takes to get these course in the shape they’re in. Most golfers don’t understand what really goes into producing a playing surface out of a living thing. Rick is always a great steward of the game. I think if more people saw an inside view of the hard work it takes to get the course in playing condition, people would be more likely to treat the course with more respect (ball marks, divots, etc). Even members of my course don’t really understand the amount of preparation and work it really takes. I think you guys have the platform to make a difference on that front. Love the shows/and videos all the way from Lane Tree Golf Course Goldsboro, North Carolina.

My favourite aspect of playing golf is the surroundings I am in, I love the visuals of golf courses, especially if you are able to experience them at different times of the day. If you two ever head over to Northern Ireland, you have to stop off at Ardglass Castle GC... My Grandad was the club pro there when the Irish Giant FinnMcCool's beef with the Scottish Giant Benandonner kicked off... Finn picked up a scoop of rocks and threw them at Scotland, he had the shanks and that handfull landed halfway. That's where the Isle of Man came from! The 2nd hole at Ardglass is where he took his scoop from, a par 3 over Howds-Hole... You can take a peep at the course on a youtube Drone Video.

I drew golf courses as a youth and started down the path of golf course design, but it was so limited as a job market that I shifted to landscape architecture. I still had the opportunity to design two courses in my career and I can say that I am probably one of the few people in the world that has designed a golf course that was scrapped because Jack Nicklaus was signed on and redesigned it. Not even mad. I hope to play it when I'm back in Tennessee some day.
If you are serious about getting into course design, I'd love to chat one day. While my career has been in landscape architecture, the ability to design and manipulate land is somewhat straightforward and I can at least maybe give you some insight to the process of how projects might work.

    It's not linear Rick.
As you get closer to scratch, 1 or 2 shots make a ton of difference, The farther you are from scratch, the less a stroke means. It's actually more exponential.
If I guy is scratch and he shoots 1 under, that matters to his handicap. If a guy has an 18 index, and he shoot 89, the change to his index is likely, very small.

In regard to the Handicap conversation at the start of the podcast... I'm a massive advocate of, when playing in club competition/society days, categorisation of handicaps should come in to play.
Single figure handicap, Cat 1 competition on its own. 10-17, cat 2 competition on its own. 18+, cat 3 competition on its own.
It's too hard to compete with a 22 handicap coming in 8 shots better than handicap when you're off of 7. You can come in with a Gross +2 and not even come in the top 3 in a stableford... It's never quite sat right with me!
Not to say the higher handicap should not win... Just win within a competitive category for all playing!

    • @_Fiinch
      @_Fiinch 2 роки тому +1

My course does divisional prizes (0-10, 10-20, 20+) and it works really really well. Especially because as a 20 handicapper, a par for me on the hardest hole is the equivalent to a scratch player holing out from 200 yards which in my opinion feels very unfair

I share Boris the Bandit’s woe, having just won a major at my club playing off 23! A fair bit of moaning by better players. But I agree with RS, so long as you play in plenty of the comps your handicap is what it is and it’s serving it’s rightful purpose. Great podcast too 👍

Very interesting. I'm surprised nothing was mentioned on the subject of Sunrise and Sunset directions, also direction of prevailing wind. The other thing that was omitted was any talk of conservation e.g. how many trees are uprooted and how many new trees planted etc.

Takes me back, the old bandit chat. I remember shooting 89 towards the end of my first yr of golf age 12. I was off 36 at the time for a net 53. Needless to say my handicap got slashed. At the time i didn't know what the fuss ws about , i was just buzzin to break 90 and win the medal. 6 months earlier, in my first comp i shot 147 and got called " Thorburn".

A good golf course should force you to go thru your bag. Nowadays too many courses from the tips test you only by driving and mid to short irons, execpt for the par-3 holes. They seem to be around 190-230 yds. True risk and reward holes are a rarity, where you could chance a bogey against a look at an eagle.
About 25-30 years ago par-4s were shortish, especially from the club tees, but par-5s mostly unreachable in two, yet you’d have a 300 yds drive occationally in your bag.

Regarding the Dear Rick, I’m in a very similar scenario. I’ve just completed my golf England official handicap which they awarded a handicap of 21.2, which on most days is probably fair.
To achieve this I shot two rounds of 91 and a final round of 101, so a 10 shot swing on the same course. Previous to submitting my handicap I’ve shot an 89 and a 102 only a few days apart, so I really feel it is down to you on the day, how the course is playing and how you feel.
