They really had to keep their roll up even in their personal lives. So they embodied the characters that the public saw on the silver screen. Fascinating! 😎
I liked this video a lot, the angle that you worked for MGM and had the inside gossip, laying out the rules for the stars. I saw you mention Marlene Dietrich and would love for you to do a video about her diet, her life, her makeup, etc. like you've done for the other stars. I don't believe I've seen videos for her on your channel but maybe I've missed them? She was a fascinating person who sort of played by her own rules. She had her own lighting person to make sure she looked amazing at all times and towards later in life, if I remember correctly, she used to sort of tape her face up and hide the tape in her hair like a facelift and it caused her headaches. Thanks for all that you do -- your channel is awesome!
Omg love it! Was this inspired by You Must Remember This? They have a podcast series currently called Gossip Girls which is all about the feud between Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons - absolutely fascinating.
@@Laurajaneatelier no way! Totally up your alley. It’s hosted by Karina Longworth - she has a series called Dead Blondes, Six Degrees of Joan Crawford, there’s one on debunking Hollywood Babylon. I really hope you give it a listen, once of my favourite vintage resources for years, among your channel ❣️
I agree. There’s so many things like this that still go on. I mean, look at how they pump men up on steroids and dehydration for muscular roles. And how many stars still take drugs and starve themselves for the perfect look. :( I wish people were allowed to simply be themselves. Perhaps things would be more authentic.
From what I recall reading a while ago, it was because the name read together quickly (Lucille St. Cyier? I believe?) sounded similar to "sewer" but I could be misremembering.
I've really enjoyed your creativity in these last few episodes. What about a old timey beauty shop gossip theme you could dish on old scandalous Hollywood affairs. Maybe use someone's hand and give them a manicure while dishing on Elizabeth stealing Eddie from Debbie. That could be really fun.
Also you've gotten Fanatics with editing and effects! The movie film reels overlapped with the celebrity images was very cool. You are getting good at this Laura. Did you take a new skill share course? Love this!
Love your videos.. I like that the studios had standards back in the day for keeping their stars looking like stars. Today, there are no stars and no standards.. that is why we love old Hollywood so much.. Joan Crawford said she always when out looking like Joan Crawford.." if you want to see the girl next door go see her" Today most stars don't care about how they dress... I see them all the time in LA. Do not agree with the studios pushing pills, that was bad. However today, stars are doing far worse.. and a ton of them are always in rehab. All that said keep up your great work! You are by far my favorite UA-camr!!!!! Loved the tour of your parents mansion!!! WOW!!!
Laura, I have a question that has bothered me for years. Maybe you can help. What FACE makeup did the stars wear that made their faces so flawless? Vivien Leigh in GWTW? The ladies on Perry Mason? All the ladies were soft and perfect looking. What was used on them? Any of the products available now? So of the later stars looked great too...like Joan Collins, and many others. Thank you so much for your videos...maybe one on how to makeup like Lauren Bacall, etc. Marian
Marilyn used vaseline under her makeup to get that dewy look. It also made the peach fizz on her cheeks grow & it caught the light, giving her that backlit look. She was asked to get rid of it & refused. Outside of work she like Nivea at the start of her career , then later, Elizabeth Arden.
I know they forced Sammie Davis Jr to marry because they knew he was in love with a woman who wasn’t black, so it’s true they made rock Hudson marry a woman because they didn’t want him dating men. Knew about what happened to Judy too. Pretty messed up stuff.
K-pop idols still cope with a lot of these “rules” today. Like limits on weight, name changes, forced plastic surgery, etc. Really puts into perspective how fucked up it is. :(
I knew most of the stuff but thank you for this video. Regarding Rita Hayworth, she was changed by her first husband, because he was just using her to make her look good next to him , she had to follow a really awful diet, exercise every day and just smile, but she suffered all this rather than dancing with her father who beat her and sexually abused. And after signing the contract with Columbia Pictures, she looked different again. And I would like to ask, did MGM dancer Eleanor Powell have to follow any such rules?
Sofia Loren famously refused the nose job. She packed her bags and was going back to Italy. They relented. Same for Briget Bardot. They wanted her to wear high heels. She threw them away. Sofia Villani Loren married Carlo Ponti. She had two boys. Liz Taylor had 3 biological children and one adopted.
Just one thing - Elizabeth Taylor did have biological children. And they looked just like her! I heard that Kim Novak was the last person in the star system. Do you know if that's true?
I don't blame the studios though they didn't ask them come act and besides they knew what it was like to act but yet still decided to get themselves into it
Sounds like the modern day K-pop companies 👀
Sad but very true. The k-pop stars stay in line because they make much more money than the average korean.
That is what I thought as I was watching it.
I thought exactly the same...
That’s what I said!!!!
That's what I was thinking 😂
How sad to encourage Judy to take drugs to keep working late & drugs to sleep. It seems to me they were quite abusive to some actresses.
…That’s because they were, which is why so many of them became drunks and drug addicts.
The things they did to Judy were horrific...
It's unconscionable how she was used. The studio didn't stop and think how they were harming her, they could just drop her and do it again!
@@ExoticalT369 It's almost as if you didn't stand a chance, it was engineered in such a way that was extremely harmful.
They definitely did it to actors too but the fact they did it to children is so cruel.
Jeez so you basically signed your soul away
@@theodora7101 you’re better off being on Broadway but I heard there’s a casting couch there too

Word wtf is this
You should say this in the beginning of your videos
But even with all the rules, there were scandals. Humans are just humans. Great video.
People are People
Taking acting classes and voice lessons make sense.
They really had to keep their roll up even in their personal lives. So they embodied the characters that the public saw on the silver screen. Fascinating! 😎
I know right! It seems pretty awful!

LOL at "this is what my friend told me". I don't think much has changed tbh.

Nothing has changed. This is also how government works.
THIS
What an abusive exploiting business… so much mud under the glitter…
i agree
🙌🙌
reminds me alot about kpop idols
Maybe that explains why they were in and out of marriages. To keep up that moral code. Living together wasn't allowed.
Yes, that's why
Ugh! And it really doesn’t make much sense, does it? Wasn’t the nuclear family revered back then? Lol.
Joan Crawford’s real name is beautiful why would they change it??
Gosh who knows !? Maybe it wasn’t catchy enough
From what I recall reading a while ago, it was because the name read together quickly (Lucille St. Cyier? I believe?) sounded similar to "sewer" but I could be misremembering.
I heard she thought her last name sounded too much like "sewer"
Because it sounded like the sewer
Ikr??? Her original name was far more glamours!!!
I love your videos and you acting a part, such fun.
Thank you
Thankyou and really enjoy watching and feeling nostalgic over that period. You do cool work and look gorgeous 💛🤔

I know Max Factor pancake makeup was used a lot back in the day. It's really heavy and like spackle.
Yes! It was Max Factor!
Remember that they used filters and editing, so that they look with flawless skin!

Camera filters :) plus film stock looks different than digital footage.

The more i watch the more i feel actresses and actors that loved were real people just another character being played by them

This is great! Would love something on Barbara Payton x
This video was creative genius.
These rules still apply today!!!
Exactly
Interesting they usually keep stage names, even on grave markers. I don't watch hardly any movies, just too out there, these rules suited the time.
*Hollyweird destroyed Judy Garland.*
Those were some hard days that's why those old stars are so revered . They earned the right to be fabulous as hell unlike these ppl of today
That’s slightly untrue, shit like this STILL goes on behind the scenes. They’re simply curated differently for a different time and culture.
Used to work at MGM and a friend who used to work at Warner Bros. Where do I apply?
The most interesting channel 💕
I love the hollywood back then than today especially actors and actresses like Marilyn Monroe etc. were the best ones
Oy thats sad
Thank you for this vidoe
I love Bette Davis! So talented. Poor Judy Garland, she didn't stand a chance with the pills they were giving her. Exploitation in the extreme!😕
And by her own mother! It’s sickening. :(
your intro is very cute, say hello to Hedda for me!
I know the story about you working for MGM is admitted to be untrue in the description box, but it’s just kind of weird and confusing.
Love love your channel 💞💄🌹🌻

Love your newest videos so much
So what do you do for MGM? I dont believe it's even a thing now.
I’m just pretending

Oh, how awful! Doesn't sound much different than the state of Hollywood today, expect to another level. Bwaha hahaha!
jeez.
Whyyyy was everyone a redhead back then lol
First
Marilyj Monroe was a poor actress
