Nice! It's been a while since I looked at ZoneMinder last, but this might be a good time to get back into it. The only showstopping issue I remember having with it is exporting video. Is that something you any feedback on?
Zoneminder works great for exporting a quick clip. First you have to create the video file. You do this by clicking on a recorded event, and then clicking "video". You can do mpg, mpeg, wmv, asf, avi, mov, swf or 3gp. You can set the frame rate, and video size. Then you have to download the video clip you just created. One would think that you need to click the "Export" button when viewing an event, however that page is for exporting stills. This is also handy, though. You can export them all into a zip folder.
Hi Jordan, I have limited experience, yes. At work, we employ alot of cisco cameras. They're default res is 1920x1200. Zoneminder seems to handle this fine. We use Cisco VSOM and Avigion software for production, which is expensive, but works well. I have 7 cisco's, and one dlink at 640x480. I threw them on a "just for fun" zonminder install to see if I could get them to stream. One thing I have noticed though is that viewing them in "Montage View" really doesnt work that well. I finally figured out how to pull the images from the cisco's and got them to show up in zoneminder. When ever I go into montage view, or try to pull them out of zoneminder into a HTML table, I find that only about 6 of them appear. I see socket errors in the zoneminder logs. Sometimes I just get the first 6 ciscos, sometimes I get a few ciscos and the dlink. It really seems to be first come first serve as to what zoneminder whats to push out. I have not reviewed any footage from them, as I keep them in monitor mode. (This is just for fun) I suspect recording would work fine, and the issues I am facing is between me and zoneminder, not zoneminder and the cameras. Hit me back with any questions you have. I'm really enjoying the feedback from this short* zoneminder series I've made. -Alex
Alex the nerd Zoneminder, gues what iam addicted to after seeing youre videos, i hate microsoft etc. Did you ever thought about face recognizing on Zoneminder, is it possible? Nederlands: Hallo Hans . Thank you for your comment. Pardon my dutch, I'm using google translate. Haha. That's the problem with only speaking one language. You never know if the translation is correct or not. I once asked my vendor at work about facial recognition on a "state of the art" cisco DVR system we deployed. He laughed, and said no. I don't think the technology is there yet for mass deployment. Sure, unlocking your phone or signing into a computer works great, but nothing triumphs over a human watching the screens.
the receivers are connected to computers running ADSB#(if windows) or dump1090(if linux). The fancy web interface is brought to you through "Virtual Radar". I very much enjoy Virtual Radar. I used to use ADSBScope, but I like the web interface much better. If you implement this, hit me up. I have flags, silhouettes, and a database file. My current adsb capture is at adsb.ucwv.edu - Alot of receivers down. Found some public facing ones on shodan.hq,,,, Their public IPs have sinced changed, So i only have one or two. Here is the page for Virtual Radar::: www.virtualradarserver.co.uk/
Thanks for the wonderful response! I did not know about Virtual Radar. I teach a SDR class and using this web UI would be so much better. I also like your idea of a web page to collect all the services running locally -- pretty clever.
Ha,,,,, about that..... I think my receiver is down at the moment. I'm in Southern WV. I found this awesome website called "shodan.hq". It's basically a search engine for devices on the internet. I made a account, and searched for "dump1090". Turns out there are quite a few dump1090 servers available. I didnt ask anyone for permission... Just plugged in the IPs and went about my business. Shodan is pretty neat. I get on a kick with it every once in a while. There's lots of IP cameras, routers, minecraft servers,,, you name it.... Some have proper authentication setup,,, some dont. You can search by location also, i.e. USA... My personal antenna setup is stock* though. I use the one that came with the $12 SDR, and mounted it on a 7Ft bamboo pole tied to my rain gutter. It's in a terrible location(doesn't even clear my house). I can usually reach out about 50 - 70 miles with it though. The region I live in is mountainous. I live on a plateau with pretty good elevation. I'm sure im missing lots of signals that are blocked by physical objects though. *Note: I attempted to tune the stock antenna by cutting some of it off. I got better results before I cut it. I would leave it stock, or make/buy a proper adsb antenna if I did it again.
An SDR Class? That's super interesting! I watched most of the Hak5 videos about SDR. They did some pretty neat stuff. Who is your target audience for the class? college students? random people?

Thanks, I'll have to check that out.
Do you have any experience using zoneminder with hi resolution cameras?

You are getting quite a few plane tracks -- what's your antenna setup?
