I work at this mall. You filmed during the darkest period, when most stores were closed but nothing new was coming in either. A lot of the empty spots are opening up now

That's good to hear! I've not set foot in the mall since visiting WV in 1996 when my Grandpa passed. Back in the late 80s...I used to work at the Ponderosa by the Burger King before you go up the hill to the mall.

It seems to be doing reasonably well despite some vacancies. Having strong tenants like Target, Marshalls and Old Navy helps.

im right there with ya. always loved going into sears until they shutdown, felt like a rebel going into spencers without my parents and seeing all the adult stuff which as a kid you dont know what they are until you get older. now since im 27 and walk in the mall. i still remember where all the old stores were

I used to go there when I was a teenager with my friends on Friday nights and with my mom during the week. I’m 49 now so that was a long time ago. This brought back a lot of memories ❤️👍

I remember that Montgomery Ward was in the Target anchor spot back in the 1990's and it sat empty for a while before Target took over.
The walled-off space on the right side of the food court used to be a Long John Silver's. Probably one of the best in West Virginia.

that's so funny I was just watching and wondered what was there before Target to have those neon lights. Really cool design. I'm from upstate NY and some of our older malls have similar 80s/90s bells and whistles still intact.

I used to go to this mall as a kid in the late 80's and 90's. It's been a very very long time. I see they carpeted it, which is weird for a mall. It's also brighter. That Pizza Place was there way back in the day. I'd get pizza then go to the arcade which was close to the food court. Good times.

As many times I've been in that target I never paid any attention to the neon lol

This mall reminds me of parkway plaza mall which is much smaller than that one in the video. It's just 1/7 of a mile and has carpet on the floor. For now I don't know how parkway plaza mall is doing since the pandemic. It was closed down for a while but opened back up. It was doing good before now it's like me. I'm older with bad knees and overweight. The mall I know is forty years old and I'm sixty. Time has flown when shopping was fun. That was the slogan " Shopping is fun again. The last time I was there back in 2011 they opened the stores and they would sit there with just the employees.

So many good memories of this mall. I grew up in Fairmont and used to go on weekends. There was an arcade next to the food court in the 90s where you could play games, some pinball machines there but not many. Sun coast movie company had movies and then we would go to JC Penny for clothes.

Another great video. This is another one I enjoyed going to. Another anchor this mall would previously have was Montgomery Ward. When it closed, it was replaced by the current Target with the cool neon. Marshalls would previously be a Steve & Berry's. The Pizza Place is an offshoot of the Pizza Place in Grand Central Mall. Similar owners.

Ames, Murphy's Mart, Stone & Thomas, The Bon-Ton, Sears, and Montgomery Ward were there when I lived in Clarksburg in the 80s. Of course, JCPenney and Sears as well. 🙂

I grew up in Fairmont in the 80’s and 90’s, and though my ‘home’ mall was the Middletown Mall, Meadowbrook was always our ‘nice’ mall to go to. The Pizza Place restaurant has been largely unchanged since the late 80’s, and my great Uncle is the owner of T&L Hotdogs, a northern WV staple!!

Great Target neon. I live a mile away from the first ever Target and they have taken away all its individuality. The carpeting in the hall is really nice but that wouldn't last a minute with snow and road salt in Minnesota.

There's a mall near me owned by Cafaro called Mall of Monroe. It was a nice mall but few stores remain but they keep it looking in good shape.

Is that carpet or tiling on the mall floors ? If it’s carpet then man that must get dirty quickly... not sure I like the industrial look roof.. looks like they didn’t bother to cover the roof over and left it bare... again, and this is for so many malls that are featured, the same boring chain stores almost to a t you could name which stores will be there and whereabouts.. it’s all so generic .. kay , Claire’s or Zales on corner spots... the same clothing chains .. American eagle, Marshall’s, c&b , maurices, rue 21, hot topic, torrid , justice, old navy etc.... the same mobile shops, the same anchors all over the country....the shopping options become boring very quickly.. why travel to another mall when it will be as bland and generic as you local one 😞 As you say, without the anchor stores, these places start to suffer as they provided the footfall , once the anchors leave then in line tenants depart when the leases are up... leisure and entertainment could be potential saviours but again can alienate large sections of shoppers / demographics if they are things such as paintball, table tennis or golf parlours.. the young will love it but older will probably never set foot in the place... these types of activities generally have short shelf lives Of being ‘in fashion’ here i;the U.K. , but again , our property costs are so much higher than the US due to lack of land.... another interesting tour as always... 👍
