  • This double-feature takes us to two malls in southeast Kentucky: A simple Kmart mall in the border town of Williamson, and then a tiny mall in small town Harlan.

It's nice to see a small mall like that for local mall walkers, it's sort of a community resource.

This is another mall that to me, looks a bit like an airport concourse. Especially the part between the Pallet Bin and the exit. Maybe just me... Also I have to give praise to those gorgeous shiny floors at village center!

That Shoe Show was a Sear's full line store for many years when I lived in the area. The WV, KY and OH tristate was my home from 1988-2005. And I believe it was I who recommended this mall back in the fall

It's interesting how they made the Kmart into an entrance at Southside.

      Sorta, but not quite.
A lot of mall Kmarts at the time built themselves to only have direct access into the mall, flanked by mall entrances on either side. This can be seen at Schuylkill Mall, Eden Mall, and Inlet Square Mall to name a few. Southside was no exception.

Dawahare’s - the second A is silent. Everyone calls it “daw hares”.

It was interesting to see both a payphone, at least what looked like the "holder" of one still lit near the Sears and an open Sears in the Southside Mall...I don't know when was the last time I've seen an open Sears or a payphone...
The Village Center Mall was almost eerie how devoid of people it seemed...reminded me of an airport at night, when you get in on one of the midnight flights...all the signs are there that it should be a place teeming with people, even if there aren't enough around to fill a taxi...I really like the design of this one though...just something about it spoke to me...maybe the late 1970's early 1980's vibe a lot of it had, it just had a great feel.

You said you were going west? Come visit a little mall in Madisonville Kentucky. This mall isn't dead it's thriving. This mall has a restaurant I will recommend if you like the perfect hamburger with a fifties theme.

I forgot to tell you that the antique store moved out and a church group moved in it's place. Sorry about that. I hope that when things do get back to normal this mall will wake up. The mall just looks like it's dead. It's just taking a nap.

I had never heard of Southside Mall but as a kid when my dad used to work in the coal mines over in Harlan I remember Village Center Mall when nearly every store was filled. There used to be a Belk that only went out in the early 2000s, there was a big dining place, a Magic Mart, I even remember a CD/Record store that was tucked away on the left right before Belk. It's sad what's happened to a lot of these places as coal mining left. Coal mining pays good money and there's still plenty of coal in those mountains but the green energy people seem determined to kill it and kill the people that used to do the mining as well. Thanks for showing these, not many people know about them and most people go film Middlesboro KY mall which basically is a sister mall and the same style as the one in Harlan.

It's sort of interesting that the first mall gets a 3.9 rating on Google reviews and has its own Wikipedia page, while the second mall gets a 3.6 rating on Google reviews and doesn't have its own Wikipedia page.

i grew up going to the southside mall. i worked overnights in the k-mart, sears (which i think is the only store left from my time, not sure if the asian restaurant is the same as when i was a kid), super k/cvs, and watsons, and even the regis hairstyling place, all before i was sixteen years old. a few of my most vivid childhood memories took place here. watching this made me feel incredibly sad. thanks.

That is a seriously-plain gray carpet. I know some of it is the lousy bitrate UA-cam has for 1080p video, but still, that's a *seriously* plain carpet. Never seen anything like it. LOL

One thing about this mall [the Harlan one] is it seemed to come into being over a period of time. Kroger opened November 10, 1981. K Mart opened June 2, 1982. Belk Simpson opened July 28, 1982. Magic Mart opened October 3, 1984. It's quite unusual to have 4 anchors opening over nearly 2 years instead of several opening at once and the mall having a grand opening to coincide.

Single level malls just don't do very well compared to multi level malls.
