Pakistan’s Most Exciting Flight - Flying Over “Roof of the World”

- I flew to Skardu in the north of Pakistan. This is one of the most scenic and exciting flights in the country. Captain Majid from PIA gave a quick briefing on the ATR-42-500 flight. Soon after takeoff from Islamabad, the plane flew directly over the mountains in the north of Pakistan.
It was a clear winter day of flying. The passengers are treated to a ‘one of a kind’ experience - a sky dance of the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges which include some of the highest peaks in the world. You can see Nanga Parbat (8,125m), Rakaposhi (7,788m), and above all, the spectacular K-2 (the second highest peak in the world) towering above all others at 8,611 meters.
The approach into Skardu was very tricky and no turning back once past the “decision point”. Pilot need to perform a “Z” shaped bend called a Zulu Bend, flying between a few mountain peaks before the Skardu valley appears.
After landing, I was given a quick tour as far as the Shangrila resort in Skardu. Check out the scenery and environment of Skardu. It is a hidden gem and has huge potential for tourism. Skardu airport has recently been upgraded to an international airport status. They’re constructing a new 6km runway. I flew PIA A320 on my way back. We flew past all the tall mountains with a clear view from the cockpit. It is truly the Air Safari.
These must be the finest pilots of the world who fly into and out of this airport.

They had leased one aircraft and the whole initial pilot and engineering team was trained and launched by Pia professionals. Pakistan airlines is also known to train and provide technical training. To Singapore airlines Saudia Philippines and Etihad

Many people here in the States are getting aware about the mindset of Pakistanis. My Indian and Bangladeshi friends insisted me to visit Pakistan someday cuz I've already visited almost whole of South Asia except Pakistan. But after that incident, hell no!! Big respect for the pilots, flying with zero margin of error. I used to fly in/out of the old Quito airport (UIO) in the 90s and always thought it was the most bada$$, until I watched this.

I was there in 1978. Flew in on a Fokker F27 Friendship. The mountains are magnificent. The contrast between the green growing areas and the desert and the rocks is dramatic. The people are marvelous. The polo match I watched was pretty fierce, though. :-)
High altitude, low humidity, and low light pollution made the view of the stars at night astonishing and awe-inspiring. It was the first time I had ever seen the Milky Way.
The weather over the mountains turned bad for a few days, and the flights out were cancelled. Once the weather cleared, the military sent in a couple of C-130s to clear the backlog. Crowded with people and freight and even some small livestock, that was not nearly so pleasant a flight, but it got the job done.
This video brought back many fond memories. Thank you.

We were stranded there for months.

As an avid trekker and mountain lover, I felt enchanted with the beautiful views from this flight in Pakistan. As an Indian, I can only hope some day we (from India and Pakistan) can all enjoy the full glory of the mountains by traveling freely across the subcontinent. Let us all work towards peace and friendship and negate the evil designs of politicians to keep people apart.

This is one of the best, if not the best flight videos I’ve seen. I’ve watched it twice imagining the skill of pilots especially going all VFR through the mountains. The hospitality was great as well and the beauty is breath taking.

This has to be one of the most vivid imagery of the tallest mountains of the world ever captured on camera. Never seen K2, Nanga Parbat and other hundreds of majestic snow capped mountains reaching 7000 meters high into the sky in one frame so lifelike and clear. The PIA is doing an amazing job flying over the roof of the world and connecting the people of the world together.
HOPE EU takes out the Ban from PIA soon. 👍
Seeing this video is a surreal feeling, never have I seen a video so high def. The scenery and atmosphere reminds me of my motherland, Tibet, which isn't too far from here, all a part of the Himalayas/Karakoram and Tibetan Plateau.

Floods and on top of that the Indian government has built dams on rivers that flow to Pakistan which further causes droughts and sometimes floods when the Indians release the water from their side.
These are some of the best pilots in the world (the pilots you want flying your plane and who are actually capable of "hand flying" the aircraft). Incredible mountains, incredible place, incredible people.
