I read the instructions a few times and it says your suppose to rotate the discs 180 degrees before tighting down the toliet seat, I'm not sure if you rotated the dics on yours. The hinge might wear out or brake if not at the right degree. That thing you thought was for shipping purposes was acutally something you put on your toilet seat if you want some cushioning or if you don't like a cold seat....I would never use it but just wanted to tell you what it was for. I hate reading instructions too but with this toilet seat with the discs, I wanted to get it right. On the instruction sheet it shows the disc in the wrong position and then after the disc rolated 180 degrees, the correct position.
I do not recall doing that process, but mine is secure, I believe that 180 was to help line the seat up, rather than tighten. So kind to help fit to the shape bowl...

Dear Patricia, I'm glad to help you, the blue strap is a gift from us, you can refer to the picture in the attachment for complete installation. I think the rotation of the hinge caps helps with the quick release aspect of the design.
