  • Paul D’Anna is what I would call an expert on Mirliton heirlooms. I had the pleasure of visiting him in early February and he was kind enough to let me record his backyard garden. He shares tips on structural growing plans and shows his wonderful heirlooms.
Last year my cousins were kind enough to buy eat plants for me however the rats at the garden took them away!
Determined to grow heirloom Louisiana Mirlitons I traveled to Metairie, Louisiana in early February where I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Paul myself. What a pure delight!
I went home with two Papa Sylvest‘s and two Israel Thibodeau‘s and I’m keeping a close watch on them until as he says after Good Friday, then they will go into the ground.
Two of one variety (undecided right now) will go at my house and two will go to the community garden.
Much appreciation to Paul for taking time with me and for taking time with these melatonin’s and making them a resource for our Gulf Coast area.
Wish me luck... and find me next year for a share!

@@fromthegroundupleadgardene4838 Yes, about a year ago I went to his house and bought a few mirlitons from him, including 2 Ishreal Thibodeaux White mirlitons. I joined him and several others in a project to save them and get them back into large production. He handles a number of different heirloom varieties and truly is dedicated to his craft. Dr. Lance Hill of Tulane introduced him to me, who happens to run mirliton.org

@@fromthegroundupleadgardene4838 I bought 2 ITs originally last spring. One did great and produced 2 nice big ones, which I planted and are doing great in my green house. The other original looked OK but never did grow very much.

Excellent video! I’m growing merliton for the first time this year. I have six of them in a eight by four raised bed. I don’t think I have enough room but we shall see.

Wow that is very exciting! Please keep us posted on how they do. I live in Pensacola and the winds from Ida really got them. I seem to have a strong stock but it’s almost like they’re starting over. I still hope to get, well I dream of getting 10 dozen at least! We’ll see. I only have two plants so I’m guessing you’re going to have tons of Mirliton
I’d love to see what you wind up getting if so please shoot me a message on Facebook or Instagram. I am at Elizabeth Duncan Eubanks or from the ground up community garden in Pensacola. Thanks and good luck

I have a chayote plant in my backyard that my dad planted about 10 years ago. How long is the life of this plant? It’s still very strong & prolific averaging about 100-200 2+lb fruits every season. I don’t know the variety but it the fruit is large and prickly.

Wow, that is incredible. I am not sure how long they will live or what the variety might be. I hope you enjoy them... Where do you live? That may have something to do with the long life.

Hi Mr. Paul does sell them at least I believe he will be this year. I’m not sure what would happen if you planted any right now because these that I bought from him back in March I have been planted since April. I did have a rough go of them with Ida but I am in Pensacola so they get mostly got wind whipped. I will send you Mr. Lanzz Hills email address and if you reach out to him he might be able to guide you. Not sure you will be able to find any right now but at least by March you could Start then.
