My Watch Collection Grail Goals 2021: Rolex, AP, Squale, Seiko, & More

  • Опубліковано 16 лип 2021
  • Today I share my annual grail goals, how my watch collecting is evolving, and why I’m going back to more sports and tool watches.
I discuss some of the most worn watches in my collection over the past year, why my next German made watch will be a Hanhart, why I’ve fallen out of love with many super luxury watches, and my continuing Rolex vs Tudor conundrum.
I also reminisce about the Squale 1521 and why I am so obsessed with the azzurro blue version, plus Casio watches, and a few other timepieces I cannot get out of my head-like the Seiko “Captain Willard” reissue.
Stay tuned for my 2021 State of the Collection video later this year and please share your own grail watch collecting goals-and watches you’re obsessed with-in the comments below!

One thing I absolutely love about your channel is how you still have a love of affordable watches. Not all of us watch enthusiasts are millionaires. I feel like some folks who only cover high-end watches tend to come off as elitist and scoff at more affordable options. Thank you for keeping the hobby more approachable!

Spot on, I was told once that Casio G Shocks were "cheap and made in China". And buying entry level was stupid because they do not hold their value!!! I will never own a Rolex Sub. But I love me Orient's, Seiko's, Islanders, Hamilton's and of course my Casios.... I told the watch snob to go invest in Bitcoin if all he cared about was his "return". TGV respects the F91W's right to horological fame as well as much as his high-end watches horology. 🙂

It sucks tough with Dan Henry. They have absolutely terrible customer service (just search online) but TGV obviously gets good customer service because of his channel. Unfortunately for us "regular" people, they're terrible.

Perfect illustration of the “best watch” being a function of where you are and whatever it is you’re doing, and in that way knowing that these beautiful objects are there to enhance your experience of things, rather than simple the things you hoard and experience.

TGV!!! My entire family - wife, son, daughter, and myself - rang out in chorus "THAT IS AWESOME!!!" the moment we saw your two watches on one strap invention! You, Sir, have probably just started an awesome watch geek trend! Truly epic.....and yes my entire family watches every video you drop!
It is good to watch (pun intended) your horological journey and how it metamorphasizes. I too have felt my grail watch desires shift. I have and always will have massive respect for the vintage watch pieces we all love such as the GMT Master, classic Subs, BP Fifty Fathoms, Willard's, AOPA NaviTimers, Newman Daytona's, and dot over 90 Speedies......but....I have also seen a trend where modern watches are not becoming respected in their own right for the most part. They simply hearken back to the classics. With this being the case many modern luxury brand pieces become not only cliche but rather passe to many collectors. With the ability to aquire either a truly epic vintage piece or a up and coming microbrand or homage that is wonderfully respectful and honest regarding what it is while being exceptionally well made ( DanHenry and Steinhart( come to mind....I see no need to chase the pieces that Hollywood "think" we need and want. Your vintage Seamaster, DH 1962, Bond SKX mod, and Tudor Day Date all are examples of what I mean. Pieces like the MI Casio and my 5600 also provide wonderful utility while providing historical fun and importance.
Prior to this year I had many "grail" pieces. Over the last 18 months I have aquired fewer pieces but have gotten more joy out of my acquisitions. I wanted a Daytona, a NaviTimer, a Fortis Cosmograph, a Speedy, a 300M, a Frederique Constant Moon phase, and endless others. I will always WANT more pieces....but I find i NEED far fewer. I still have my ultimate grail watch which is probably not much of a grail to most people but it is my grail piece. I also have a couple others I will probably buy. Bit I no longer have a sense of longing for pieces that it is expected I want to "experience" because they are popular....for example I love the history of Gerald Genta designs and could probably talk about a great deal more than the two pieces most people know him for.....but I couldn't care less to own one....I don't care about having a ceramic Daytona or a Primero. I don't want a modern Breitling ( holy cow a pilot that doesn't want a Breitling??!?!). I don't want a Speed master. I don't want a modern James Bond SeaMaster ( massive Bond fan but Fleming wrote Bond with a Rolex and so it shall ever be....even though I grew up with Brosnan). I would love a Patek but understand that I would never buy it...not because I can't afford it but because I would never wear it....I would be terrified I'd damage it. Anyway my point is, I like to think I have grown to a point where I can enjoy and love the art of watches without having to own them all. I am exceptionally proud and picky with my collection and have never and will never sell a piece (20+ pieces). I will purchase probably 5 pieces in the next 18 months. All of them have personal meaning to me and would have little to zero meaning for almost anyone else. Point is this.....I agree with you that the last few months had changed my viewpoint as a collector. It has made my taste far more refined and specific while also allowing me to appreciate more pieces without having to own them.
As always my friend, thank you for such wonderful work. Very very glad to hear you are well. Happy Anniversary! Keep doing what you always do.....i am off to figure out which watch is going to become one with my 5600 😜 Onward and Upward, TGV! Be well

It's an endless cycle. I've had seller's remorse on many watches, to include my Seiko SKX, my Citizen NY0040, my Omega Aqua Terra, and Seiko SARX033. I've bought them all back and now have them in my collection, but I've been feeling lately like I have too many watches again and am considering a purge. This will inevitably lead to more seller's remorse, and so on.

I think you hit the nail right on the head about revisiting watches from our past. Just like we associate music and movies with certain times in our lives, and hearing or watching them can take us back there, I believe watches can have that same effect on us. We can associate memories with specific watches, and then when we put those watches back on we can be taken back to that exciting time. Thanks so much for sharing this with us TGV. Great stuff.
PS: When a youtube channel is just starting out and gaining traction, that is one of the most exciting times and can make you very nostalgic. Nothing wrong with wanting to recapture that somehow.

I had the coolest thing happen. So I am a 26 year old musician and music teacher. I love watches and this channel helped a lot especially in 2019! I became obsessed. I had a new student two weeks ago come in. He's older, a brand new musician, but has multiple vintage or brand new high end guitars. Not uncommon at all, a wealthy retiree wants to learn, COOL! so we get to talking and he is a watch collector. Our first lesson he was wearing a rose gold, chocolate faced Daytona. Then last week, he shows up wearing a FP Journe Chrono Bleu. He then very casually asked me if I would like to try it on. Never even seen one and I got hands on time with one. so cool. Till the day I can afford a luxury watch, my Sarb033 will do just fine.
    Thanks TGV.

100%, entirely and enthusiastically agree with the day date comment. I have taken countless watches off in the morning and put them back in the case because after the question, "Bugger, what day is it again...", an SKX makes it's way back out.

The Squale in blue reminds me of a beach in Corfu that was about 50m wide and 10m deep. The water there was so clear it was like looking into a glass of evian. There were two local old guys fishing for octopus there. Just seems like this watch would fit in that world, diving for octopus in the clearest water you can imagine.

Squale 1521 is one of the most iconic sub 1000 watches out there. I've ended up owning the polished and bead blasted blue as they serve different functions. Recently invested in seamaster professional white dial which is truly stunning.

Found love in Sinn watches late last year with my LE 104 and now I really want a 556i, so that's my 2021 goal. Or if Tudor dropped a BB58 GMT, I'd likely get that in a heartbeat.

Yes! The eternal pursuit of watch collection does go on. I'm always looking for a bargain. The end of financial year sale netted me a Pulsar solar quartz watch for less than half the normal retail price. But most of my watches I've purchased from thrift shops. Not because they were cheap to buy, but I'll actually will wear them on a regular basis. My daily beater will always be my Casio G-5600 solar G-Shock.

Gotta be honest-- in the realm of the last couple of years, I've found myself foregoing my vintage and dress watches in favor of my G-shocks.
As you stated, TGV, I haven't been attending very many formal events (i.e. the theater, concerts, or even fine dining), and have really only found myself working out doors, or else driving all over my state--
The result being, I really need a tough watch, with the 'complications' of a high-end chronograph, but that also has excellent illumination...

This year consolidated my Seikos and Hamilton into a new Aquis (love it), and as I'm 50 will treat myself to an Omega - did seriously consider a Seamaster 300 (the retro jobbie), but think this will cause some redundancy with the Aquis so have my heart set on the seamaster Railmaster as an understated GADA piece... Regrets? Maybe my Hamilton X wind Auto Chrono, but wouldn't buy back after looking into servicing costs for the 7750.

Lol! I’m also consolidating watches (and a lot of other stuff) to buy a 50th birthday timepiece. I’m thinking of either an Omega Aqua-Terra Co-axial, or Dynamic chrono (used) or a Tudor BB36 (new). Currently I have a Hamilton, an Orient and a Bulova, but I’ll be keeping the Hammy!

This video was wonderful, and well timed - I've been reflecting over watches in my collection & how I find I'm resorting to wearing more of my 'practical' digital watches whenever I'm not at work
I work in hospital: in healthcare where we can't wear wristwatches, which limits my time being able to enjoy my watches other than at weekend. I'm curious if TGV would ever consider a 'fob watch' collection review one day, would love to see.
    Thank you TGV.

My collection got smaller, but more important this year so far lol. Managed to get my hands on a Seiko Auto from '97, Hamilton from late 30s early 40s, Redshift 7 Exosphere (watchgang watch I actually liked) AirRain Type 20 Mecca-Quartz with a VK63 in it (not the new 2k plus ones.) and a Vostok Komandirske. Got rid of my IKONIK Hulk Diver and the Grant Brown. I have an addiction 😂😂

Good evening TGV! The past 15 month made a change in my take on wristwatches as well. When this whole pandemic started I found myself wearing my G-SHOCKs sometimes for weeks straight, due to the fact i spent less time in the office. Then I went back to my Sinn watches and Seiko divers. I would love to get a Hanhart sometime in the future. On the other hand I find Grand Seikos sportier pieces very versatile. Best regards!

Love this video! The two I wish I didn’t sell were a Blue Rolex Oyster Perpetual and Tudor Heritage Chrono… sold both to get me into a solid rose gold Omega Aqua terra (I’m never selling that!!!) the Rolex I have thought about but with prices around £10k, it’s just not worth that cash whether I could get that together or not…
I think the constant adjusting of a collection is the fun part of watch collecting!
