- As a response to the recent Watches and Wonders hype, and all the predictable, annual derivative content that follows, I'm sharing something a little more profound and hopefully useful. In analyzing six of my watches (which could be considered an ultimate collection within my larger collection) they revealed to me nine fundamental truths and lessons I have learned in my collecting journey that have ultimately led me to be the happiest I have been in my horological adventures. Also stay tuned for special reporting, live from Watches and Wonders, by our very own Hollywood A-list movie star HRH Hugo Mountbatten. What are your secrets to watch collecting happiness? And what watches have taught you the biggest lessons? Please share in the comments.

Spoilers!
Included in the video are vintage hidden gems like my Panerai Luminor PAM0048, an ahead of its time Tissot Janeiro Z199 chronograph that was the progenitor to the Omega Speedmaster, the ultimate strap monster in the form of my Tudor Submariner ref. 79090, the Universal Geneve White Shadow that inspired my favorite Patek of all time (the Ellipse,) a Seiko Willard reinterpretation of the iconic Apocalypse Now diver ref. SPB237J1-a watch that taught me to appreciate unusual timepieces I never expected to like-and last but by no means least, the Casio G-Shock Mudman G9000 that made me appreciate how fun and simultaneously practical watches can be at an affordable price, for less than $100.

I’m at my lowest of lows right now battling stage four cancer, but your videos are amongst the very few I actually can enjoy watching. Something about watch collecting seems to sooth and calm my runaway train of a mind. Life is short, and it’s great to see you enjoying every moment. Thanks for such upbeat and positive content.
wish you all the strength and determination in the world. Stay strong ❣💪
I’m so sorry that hear that. Wishing you and your family all the best my friend. Take care and God bless.
@@Czeron01 Thank you, friend.
Take care of yourself my friend, I wish you all the best in health and happiness
you are not alone. Take care Johnny.
the black and white Rolex "news" section was too bloody funny. LMAO
It is and the part that makes it even more funny is if you compare to the coverage of W&W or Baserlworld from any year it's basically that.
I mean, I like new releases. That way, everyone can get exactly what they crave. Or most people. Some.
it is EXACTLY what I am seeing on youtube!
"Horological orgy of consumerist idolatry by collectively wandering at watches," was not a sentence I expected to hear today. Masterful narration.
Whoreology
Privilege to be part of the conversation. More content like this, please. Thanks.
The honour is all mine amico mio. Thank you for the years of inspiration.
I hope one day, if I ever make it west to meet you.
Onwards and ever upwards!
T.
@@theurbangentry it would be an honor
It's refreshing to hear the acknowledgement that we should all work towards enjoying what we have, and that as watch enthusiasts we really are a tiny minority in the world. Not only to be fortunate enough to own watches, but to even have the freedom to enjoy life. Thinking about how many people on this planet can't do that is sobering to say the least.
I truly felt your comment in the moment and it made me swing my life in question.
Well said

The Hugo intros are the best in the UA-cam biz! And your writing and scripts are impeccable, TGV. Always a pleasure.
This dude needs a girlfriend.
@@tytytyme33or an incredibly posh T Rex. Keep it gentry.
Thank you so much, you are a true gent for saying so.
Onwards, upwards and best regards!
TGV
And the Hugo intros are only getting better over time.
I would 100% buy a Hulex 😂
Thanks for encouraging good financial practices and not being a blind consumer/shopping addict
"Watches as Investments" has to be one of the dumbest, idiotic, most irresponsible, bits of advice the Swiss Watch Mafia and Watch Idiot Savants parrot at each other. It's consumerism under another name.
Oh, but the watch doubled in price over ten years! Yeah, dude, money halved in value over the same period of time so you're selling it for the same price you bought it for. You could have left that cash in a bank or literally _any_ type of investment product and would have been ahead. Instead of you lost money buying a watch that does nothing better than a Seiko for 1/10th the price.
I do enjoy several other watch channels on YT, but really, there’s nobody out there who are able to approach the hobby in such a philosophical and at the same time enjoyable way as you. Add to that the production values of your videos, and we have something truly unique. All the best, T!
100% agree.
Just as I’m starting to get burned out on watch content and watches in general, you stepped in to save the day with this gem of a segment! ✨🙏✨In this world of over consumption and lack of appreciation for the things we own, we all need to take a little time to admire the things we already own. Personally, I’m just so burned out hearing about the brands new releases, or an “influencers” big watch purchase. Truly, there is no end to this insatiable hobby.😵💫
I love how TGV is no holds-barred. We all know who you're talking about and we all thank you for your candor!
This video is an absolute breath of fresh air! You're the only one I know in this game that speaks of appreciating what you've already got. That's a big one for me and why I limit my collection to just a few beloved pieces.
Thank you for such excellent content and perspective!🙏
We love Hugo Mountbatten :))))
Even though I love the hype and checking the new releases, this video is fantastic. Thought provoking as always TGV. Keep up the fantastic work.
Nice to see my favorite Microphone-UA-camr under my favorite Watch-UA-camrs Channel. You are both awesome beyond the topics! Thanks for the great work.
Taking off a watch to put aside a frame of mind for the day, before selecting another is an enjoyable moment.
Always refreshing to hear your rational recalibration of the reality-distortion-field that is the luxury-watch hype-machine and the UA-camrs that feed it (as they insist they're just giving their honest opinions ;) )
My key to watch collecting is the same as yours when it comes to jogging = feeling the enjoyment it produces me when i'm capable of fully appreciating the happiness this small collecting world brings me. Wether it's a conversation with my father about one particular time-piece, a sit-down with my grandfather to talk about his collection or receiving/giving a random compliment to a stranger in the street in relation to their wrist-watch, the overall ejoyment and utility i get from these moments is unmeasurable. Grazie davero Tristano. Your content resonates fully with me and has been for years since I found your channel in 2021. I'm not a recurrent comentator in your videos (in fact I can't even recall if I've commented previoulsy), but this video was extremely necessary in order to look back and realize how fortunate it is that we are all capable to enjoy this from our respective standpoints. Grazie amico!
Un saluto dalla Spagna, Guillermo!
That very same model of mudman, i got from my mother to my birthday when i was 10 years old, it was my first watch and it followed me for 16 years now. Brings me happiness every time i see it and im glad somebody else also sees is it for something more than just some plastic. Love from Norway!
I'm still wearing the G-Shock my mom gave me 19 years ago! I think about it any time I consider a watch sold based on toughness and durability. There's no way any luxury watch can beat a G-Shock on that front.
Always love your intros TGV, and your taste as well👍 Big cheers from Bremen/Germany 🧡
This was the best watches and wonders vid. Didn't realise how introspective yours truly was 😎
From exploring and researching to daydreaming, prioritizing and hesitating, it's a journey that adds joy and excitement to life, relieving the monotony of everyday routines. Watch collecting for me is like crafting my own personal videogame space and every timepiece coming out of the watchbox is like a piece of the accessories in the gaming scene that you can actually touch and feel, Pure magic! Thanks for amazing video 💙
Fantastic video and message. I was feeling overwhelmed by all of the new watch releases this week and your video helped me remember how blessed I am to have the timepieces that I have and to cherish them. Thank you!
I personally can not get into the Casio plastic watches. But then I am 74 and very old school. I can see military or construction people needing to have a rugged and cheap watch for work. That makes sense. As an old retired Italian/American physician, I wish you a long life and no future respiratory situations. Bravo again.
Wonderful video and way to put things in perspective. Gratitude, being grateful for what you have, and enjoying the simple pleasures in life!
You always bring thought provoking topics with a unique perspective on the hobby.
Another original great video. A great mix of words of wisdom. Thankyou so much.
If someone puts so much energy and love into the work it is amazing. And as a watcher I feel respected and taken serious. Biggest Respect to You and thank You for the work. I enjoy it very much!
This was so enjoyable! Really made me think about why I enjoy watches and perspective on how I want to live my life. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you, I look forward to your videos each week. Original, well throughout and brilliantly executed. And then there is Hugo.
Very moved by what you said at the end and a great reminder ❤thank you
Love it TGV. Some great pointers, especially the last one. As always, love seeing the variety of watches in your vids. The Accutron tease at the end was a cracking ending, what a beauty!
Commenting as I watch, there's so much value to the content you drop. Your humor just adds so much to the jabs and food for thought. Your content feels like it's made for a Netflix documentary special. Amazing as always!👌💯
Tristano, you’re establishing yourself (proudly) as the genius outsider of the watch world reviewers.
I believe no one comes close to your high quality content, not from the production point of view, and following you for years now- I admire your way of evolving, and dedication to the “way”.
I’m starting to find more and more life and moral education in your vids-essays.
Plus the watch content as itself is simply the best.
Kipping it as always- Onwards and upwards mate🤝🏻
A million thank yous, you made my day.
Onwards, upwards and the very best of regards,
T.
This episode was a masterpiece TGV, I have been watching for 4 years and you get better every single month !!!!
First class TGV really well shot and an abundance of clear and concise straight talk.
Have you ever considered selling everything that you own and I mean everything and then turn around and start all over again.
It's so liberating and it keeps you passionate about the subject instead of becoming staid and locked down because you just can't bring yourself to let something go.
It really does make you realise that we are not here long so why not let as many different pieces pass through your hands as you can, especially with your gift for documenting what you have found. Bring it on TGV!!
The Joy of Missing Out. Love that one! Give a hug to Hugo for me :)
Hugo needs his own UA-cam channel, the man is an absolute legend.
So happy to see the MRW 200 still in your collection! Just bought mine same dial as you and then found your review of it. Love your focus on all types of watches and specially of things other than watches as well. Whether you recommend books, philosophy, tasteful timeless jewelry, knives or bags. That's what makes your channel special. Thank you for including us on your journey and sharing gems with us!
You've gone a long way. This relates on many levels.
Great video. Very thought provoking. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this video.
Absolutely one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time! Well done! Humorous, yet exceptionally thoughtful. There’s a lot of good “takeaways” from your words. Thanks for digging deep on the horological subject as well as personal wellness.
More Hugo please, he brightens the day….Darling!
This video is for those of us who have been collecting watches for a long time and are somehow fed up with marketing, fashions and social networks about watches. It is a game that never ends unless one finds happiness and satisfaction, because what is a hobby and love of watches can become a nightmare or lose us on a path of disappointment and discontent. I loved this video TGV. Thank you!
Your best and most well executed work so far..... very watchable and enjoyable, many thanks for this...........
I was not ready for that head explosion from Scanners hahahahaha
🤣😅🙏
Thank you Steve,
Best regards as always,
TGV
I always forget who said it first but the watch on your wrist is the best watch, great video and super insightful.
TGV, always nice to get a dose of your perspective. When I first got into watches you were very influential to my own watch-growth (so to speak). To this day i can see why. Cheers!
Great video mate. And you're so right about Watches & Wonders. Your final words ring so true. As I always say to my son, the more you think about what you have to be grateful for, the more you find to be grateful for. Keep up the great work!
The OLD CHAP, is BAAAAACK! Urban Gentry at his B E S T ! HUMOR, wit, art and know how! Alright. Way to go, mate! Cheers 🥂 ! Keep em comin' ... You continue to inform, entertain AND amaze!
Contentment is the highest form of happiness. All the best, TGV. Thanks again for your great, free content.
I went on a 3 week vacation, one where I decided against carrying around expensive watches. I bought a Citizen Promaster Land at a deep discount, put it on a rubber strap, and wore the heck out of it hiking and even kayaking. It performed very well, in very wet conditions, and wearing it to dinner on a Milanese strap stood out from the ubiquitous Apple Ultras the financially comfortable traveler seems to wear these days.
I now get how you can really appreciate a watch that is not 'haute horologie' but just does a job, like a G-Shock or the DW290, and gets associated with events in your life.
Best watch channel on the youtubes! Thanks for the videos, always informative and insightful!
Thank you for another great video. I particularly enjoyed the intro, as well as number 9. I hope to share my collection with the channel soon.
The Oscar goes to Hugo Mountbatten for his intro to “Watches and Blunders”. 😂😂😂😂 👏👏 Brilliant TGV.
I have been thinking some of the same things you discussed in this video You did a good job of articulating this advice. Much of it relates to more than just watches. Great video!
Hey it's McMahon! Thanks for the content TGV excellent as always.
TGV, great video! Completely agree with enjoying what you have and enjoying life while we have it. It certainly can be short. Love your attitude, keep up the good work.
Great advice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for always being true to yourself & your philosophy. ❤
As usual, this was a great production. I really enjoyed the conversation and the movie clips. It was also very intimate. Thank you for your creativity. I know this is not easy even though you make it look easy. Looking forward to more .
Hugo deserves his own channel.
Can really relate to all the points TGV! I think it sends a message not just to watch collecting but rather the approach to how we live our lives in general! Great content as always!
I work in a heavy industrial setting as a quality engineer for a heavy equipment manufacturer. In the past, i worked offshore oil and gas. I LOVE my Victorinox quartz watches! They are built like tanks and keep amazing time. Id love to see a review on some of the more “work friendly” and utilitarian models.
Well done and well spoken TGV 👏
Always great to see the person finding the balance in their life! Have a great weekend, Sir TGV!
Funny, deep, sentimental, and reflective…all in under 30 minutes! Kudos! It took me a while longer than you Hugo to get to the same place of humility and gratitude. We can have fun, pursue hobbies, and learning all in the service of becoming better humans. Who thought we can get some of this on UA-cam? Thank you for creating such exquisitely crafted videos.
One of your very best TGV! I absolutely loved that! The Hugo openings are always humorous, seeing the McMahon cameo was a treat, and the overall message of this video was brilliant. Well done sir👏
Great, great, great video TGV. authentic, positive, educational yet fun. thank you for your content
A brilliant video. Great thoughts on collecting. But most of all the last bit on savoring life resonated with me having had 4 serious surgical procedures and life threatening circumstances over the last year I truly am on the same page. I enjoy my little watch collection a great deal, but also every day is a treasure.
Great and well produced video! Thanks 🙏 ❤
Thank you for a great video as always. You are a great inspiration!
Always entertaining, always thought provoking. Top stuff.
Imagine if everyone in the watch industry decided to create content like this. Just for one year we turned our backs on the hype train. Love your stance.
Witches and Wonkers; “ghastly-looking nouveau-riche event” Hugo, you *know* !!! All those “swinging pendulums” 😆😂🤣
Glorious upload TGV 👍
Fabulous as always TGV, thanks for sharing. I completely appreciate and agree with your philosophy about nature, and the things we are lucky enough to share a planet with 😊
Wise words and advise that pertain to all aspects of life. Well done!
Watching your videos is always Always a Quality experience. Thank you for the amazing effort and artistic flair you invest in every creation.
This is why you’re my favorite horological watch commentator of all time. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great presentation T, and your talk is supported by your walk as verified by your wonderfully eclectic personal collection. Onwards and upwards!!!
Governor, you should really write a book on watch collecting. Would be a best seller. 👍
Great foil to the coverage across the industry this week. Cheers to another good episode!
Great work as always dude. Your humour, and effort you put into your videos... always impressive 👍
... and now that I have watched the rest of the video, your dissemination of wisdom is also impeccable and needing a tip of my cap.
great great content much needed in the space!!
TGV - your videos are simply THE BEST on YT, on ANY topic. What I love most is the perfect integration of scenes from films I absolutely adore. Genius. Pure artistry.
I love how you understand that watches can be a metaphor for life. A darkly humorous and philosophical account. Pure genius TGV ❤
Meaningful and thought-provoking content. Hugo is always the icing on the cake.
I love your videos, especially your intelligence and enthusiasm with watches and film
Too kind, thank you so much, 🙏🙏🙏
Best regards,
TGV
I have to agree with you, a lot of my favorite watches don't even get a mention in those hype lists and events, sometimes all you need is a watch you enjoy wearing, no matter the value.
Bloody marvellous! A breath of fresh air.
One of your best, and being a watch collector for over 20 years I so agree with the things you said!!
I seldom comment on any videos but the last 40 seconds of this one are memorable. Thank you.
Excellent. Why your content to me is the pure OG of watch content. Pure class TGV. Thank you.
I love this video! Hugo's antics, the Rolex "News" and other fantastic humour aside, there's are some powerful messages here. Appreciate what you have. Don't take anything for granted. Find happiness in your own personal love of watches and horology, not in the mainstream. Sage advice for life, really, but certainly applicable to this hobby. Thank you kindly, TGV!
Great video. Thank you
Enjoyable as always, thank you 👍
The quality of your video's is outstanding. Lots could learn from watching. Top shelf. Keep em coming. John. One watch collection...
Man, that last segment hit me hard. True words! You got a new subscriber right now.
Interesting and thought provoking. Enjoyed so much i listed a second time at home after a first run through on my walk.
Your content is the finest TGV, truly. Cheers.
The voice over is Top Class . Vocabulary and Pronunciation near Perfection 👌🏼
This is quite refreshing and a welcome video.
Zero Hype, very calm with a touch of comic relief.
