  • Today I'm joined by engineer turned watch entrepreneur Marc Frankel of Long Island Watch for a brand new #WatchTalk episode where we pose the question: If you could only own one watch, what would it be...and why? We also discuss a more existential topic: if you were a watch, what watch would you be? In this video we cover a variety of brands and watches including the Squale 1521, Panerai Luminor Quaranta PAM0048, Rolex Submariner, Islander Rangemaster Mechanical, Seiko Flightmaster, Seiko SKX013, Rolex Explorer, Breitling Aerospace, and Breguet Tradition. What do you think about our choices? What would you pick as your one and only watch? And what watch most represents you? Let us know in the comments!

For me the best "one and done" watch is a oldschool two-tone datejust. Just such a versatile and classic piece.

Great choice - may i also throw the Tudor Prince Date+Day in the ring. Also in two-tone. I totally like the Tudor 5-link Bracelet and that it sits flatter on the wrist than the Datejust due to the flatter caseback.
That would be my "one and done" watch.

@@-Medicitotally!! I like the 76214 Tudors a lot. The solid link bracelet and oldschool oyster style case are just lovely together. Having the ETA movement also cuts the service costs down to about 250 bucks.

Growing up in Switzerland I remember that the Omega signs always struck me when I saw them around, even as a child without knowing anything about watches. For example, I didn't even notice the Rolex signs, but Omega seemed cool to me. Many years later I became interested in watches and wanted to buy my first "big" one, and it was an Omega Aqua Terra. My grandparents are from Italy, I've been there several times. And Fierenza is also my favorite city. I love Italian motorcycles & recently thought I should have an Italian watch to go with my bikes. First Panerai, 44mm, sandwich dial, manual wind, exhibition case back, 2-hand watch. It looked so big and weird! Totally different from watches I typically wear. But, it is now the watch I wear the most. Recently one of my clients surprised me: He gifted me a ceramic Radiomir. A black seal pig dial. I'm fully committed now :) Great episode!

Excellent topic and discussion as always! So I have a plethora of chronographs (both vintage and modern), some of which are divers, as well as some diving GMT's and some straight divers (like the infamous SKX). I'm not sure if the "one watch" for me actually exists- but I can imagine it. 1. It must be dive capable as I love being underwater. 2. It must have some sort of rotating bezel as this is very useful as a timing device. 2 and a half. That bezel must be fully lumed. 3. I would go for the GMT function over the chrono function as I do travel a bit and have a daughter in Japan. 4. I would prefer a light blue dial and a RED date. 5. It needs to be at least 42mm so I can appreciate it with my eyes (as well as the fact that the bigger pieces do look better on me). So effectively I would be going for a 42+mm version (homage) of a GMT Master with all of the above mentioned features. My second favourite watch (which is one of most least expensive pieces) is the closest piece to this. It's a 41mm 300M homage to the GMT Master. Full on lume monster and yes it comes underwater with me. The only things boxes that it doesn't tick are is the lack of a light blue dial and red date and its dub 42mm. But it packs a HUGE bang for bucks and lots of fun for so little money. Another option I would consider (despite it being quartz) is that beautiful white and blue Seiko Flightie on Mark's left wrist. Reasons- a. Chrono, Alarm and GMT all in one in anologue display. b. It's a Flightie ! Say no more!

For me, the Squale 1521 checks so many boxes. I just love the dial face and overall look of the watch. The blasted case is the chefs kiss. What a tough question. I looked through my collection and settled on my Seiko SSH003J Astron. As much as I wished a mechanical movement would have fit the bill, the premise of only having one watch suggests a set & forget do-everything instrument. The Astron fulfills that criteria for me. Thank goodness we don't live in that imaginary dystopian world currently!

I love these collaborations with Marc. For me it would be my Seamaster Chronograph as it would probably go on longer than even a Citizen which would eventually need to have the capacitor replaced.
I see Marc rocking the RMM, I'll have to get you a picture of mine.
Entertaining as always, you've brightened my day up today 👍🏻

A great episode, thank you TGV and Marc! 😊 I would choose the Casioak G Shock Bluetooth/Solar version GA-B2100-1A. It's durable, 200 m water resistant, solar powered, connected via Bluetooth for super accurate timing and has the basic functions of a watch, timer, alarm, stopwatch, etc, ohh and it's AnaDigi ! Can be worn as a dress, sport, casual or smart , with easily adjustable straps.

Marc visited Teddy! Such unfaithfull lad. So that blue Squale brought you 2 together 10 year ago, and now Marc is doing this naughty thing. Squale again, epic watch. Usually it's already at 7 years with couples

If I could only keep one it'd have to be my Reverso Tribute blue (It was bought in memory of my late mother, and I had the case-back engraved and personalised by JLC. So it stays, no matter what...)

100% agreed. People behind a company can ruin an otherwise cool watch for me.
I want to be compelled by all aspects because these are luxury goods, not necessary goods.
If something about it bothers me, I simply don't need it.
I'd rather find something I can connect with 100%.

Great conversation! The topic around the connection of watch with history/ppl/the company etc... was really interesting. I used to be like Marc and quite logical decision making and I'm more like TGV as I get older. I feel like I'm almost in middle but leaning towards TGV and the brand, ppl, history connection with watches. Thanks for the insights and guiding my personal reflections! =)

The SKX015 was made and it definitely has a blue hue on the dial. I found one after a while of searching. I have a video comparing it to my SKX013. I even collected the orange SKX017 the counterpart of the SKX011. Great to see you both as always. 👍

Congratulations for this superb personal sharing
I follow both of you from Mexico and really enjoy all your profesional and entertaining reviews !
In my case ,,im all the way paneristi boy , my pick will be the PAN233 8 day PR ( With the Dot instead the am on indicator ) with the first PAN in-house movement P.2002 also bought it at the panerai historical boutique in piazza duomo in 2008 ( first production year )
As you both do, I have a nice collection from different brands and types but this one because of the wonderful movement , the power reserve linear indicator , a week + autonomy , a true GMT , the brand history and the sentimental value ( purchased during my honeymoon ) make me feel like wearing a Ferrari in my wrist,,and therefore this always will be the last standing piece in my troop
    Kind regards from 😎 Cancun

Great discussion gentleman, it would indeed be a horrible world if we could only have one watch. TGV, I’m surprised that you didn’t mention your personal Squale design. The answer to this question for me ties to the settings the watch needs to work in, like Marc discussed. Of the watches I own it would be my bronze Yema with the merlot bezel.

  • @ianwalker4803

I like this idea of a "one and done" watch, I need to give this some deep thought to reduce my collection. This doesn't mean one and done forever as Mark said "variety is the spice of life" but it certainly is worth thinking about as it would allow ownership of one far superior (or expensive) watch rather than several not quite as good, perhaps wearing until one tires of it then move on to the next dream watch . Perhaps we are all getting blinded by collecting and perhaps for some we should focus in. Onwards and upwards
