I concur! My dad was this type of guy that documented all family vacations always lugging around heavy a VHS camera and all it's accessories. I used to be embarrassed by it, but now appreciate the fact we have videos like this including the footage from the 20,000 League's Underneath The Sea ride that was shut down years ago. I wish I had all his recordings to convert to upload this type of content for people to enjoy .
not only held it, but brought it into the park and got it onto the ride. I bet the other passengers were thrilled this person had a massive camera held up
Glad people are sharing old ride videos. I wanted to see what it was like before the movies to get an idea of how much it actually inspired them, which turns out to be slightly more than the "barely at all" I was expecting.
Peter thank you for your comment this subject interest me to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie has a scene of Jack Sparrow and some pirates stuck in jail and there is a dog holding the keys in his mouth for the jail cells just like in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, the movie has other scenes from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, in there movies and the pirates have the same style of clothing of the pirates on ride! You can see the whole ride of the 1990 Pirates of the Caribbean at this link... ua-cam.com/video/QED8E-p7WTo/v-deo.html
I always felt the Tortuga scenes in the first and second movies felt heavily inspired by the ride as well. Especially the outside scenes with the pirates all hanging out and drinking and also the woman.
David Watties if the ride was too creepy for young children, I don't think it would've existed. I rode it when I was 5, and loved it. I've yet to hear from anyone who rode it back then and say the loved it.
Yup, PC/SJW idiots ruined it. It wasn't creepy at all. The new version is just as "creepy" as the old one, but that's the damn point, they are pirates! People seem to think pirates are nice awesome dudes. NOPE, they rape, murder and steal to their dark hearts content. They were terrible monsters, and yet today we idolize them as if they were heroes. Thank the PotC franchise for making people think pirates were cool dudes and not blood thirsty terrorist villains of the sea. But hell, they were still badass! :D
Thank you for posting theses videos, I remember as a kid this used to be my favorite ride and now as an adult showing my children so much of the things I loved about this ride have changed and I couldn't quite describe the way it used to be to my son. With these videos I can now show him the way I remember as a child! Thank you again!
I applaud you for sharing history. I was born in the earl 2000's and I've been studying Disneyland history for a few years. I love seeing old ride videos for the younger generation to show them what was before.
Wow, this brings back so many incredibly magnificent memories. The way the ride was in this video when I was about 8 years old is so awesome. Thank you for uploading this, it brings back a lot of great memories for me and I'm sure lots of others watching
I never have seen this ride in real life but based on the video it has that classic dark, brooding, atmospheric feel fueled by warm old lights (pre- led lights) without feeling scary. Kind of making something grotesque look amazing and nice as they did best during the end of the 90's and the early 00's. Thanks for sharing this video on your channel.
I don’t know if anyone noticed this or not but around 7:10 was the one thing I remembered from the ride and loved they put that in the movie, when I first watched POTC I saw that scene and was like “Mom, Dad, remember that part from the pirates ride? The prisoners trying to get the dog to come closer cause he had the keys in his mouth” loved it

What I always loved about this ride was the attention to detail and always noticing something new every time you rode the ride( or now by watching videos like yours) I remember when I first took my daughter on this ride when she was only 3 years old, she looked up at the pirate that was dangling his feet over the bridge and shouted out "Ewwww Look how dirty his feet are!!!". Everyone in our boat laughed and I thought "wow, I have been on this ride numerous times since I was a kid in the 80's and never noticed that".
That's very interesting on how at the Jolly Roger, the boat was completely stopped and it let the Jolly Roger say the entire spiel. Nowadays the boat just goes down during any part of his dialogue. Did the boats always do that? Because if they did, I wish they still did it today. And thanks for uploading this amazing video of my favorite attraction in the entire park!
Just found this video and reading through the comments now, I know the answer to this, yes the way the ride used to be the boat would stop to allow the jolly roger to talk and tell you the rules of the ride before you dropped, I was about 5 or 6 when I first went on it back in 94-95 I remember it clearly a lot less people at that time too, however as the park has become more crowded they had to make some changes to how the ride operated to allow as many people to get on as they could, it makes for a much quicker ride through and you tend to miss some of the dialog, not to mention the boats never touched till towards the end of the ride when you were brought back to the front of the ride area, now it seems you tend to bump into the boats before the drop off (to allow time for the boat ahead to go through) and you have very little distance between boats during the ride. All in all it comes down to management of time and people, squeezing as many people onto a ride in as much time as is possible because of how popular it is and how many people there are visiting the park.
Best ride quotes: Dead men tell no tales Don't be chiiiicken Yo ho, yo ho! Arf arf arf We wants the redded! And of course SPLOOOSH (at the bottom of the drop)
Thank you for your very Best ride quotes - that was very clever and funny Matey! Dead men tell no tales - There be squalls ahead and Davy Jones locker!
My favorite Disney ride! It was one of the first rides I went on during my first Disney World trip in 2001 because I loved pirates so much (Peter Pan was my favorite as a kid. Still in my top 5). Being only 9, I had no idea I was going on it during one of its last years before the movies came out and changed it. Now, I LOVE the first Pirates movie - its actually one of my favorite movies of all time - but there was something darker and more uncertain about the older design. I don't mind the friendlier design of the modern ride but I like darker and more intimidating rides (like Haunted Mansion, the now-extincted Snow White dark ride, the Mummy (Universal), etc). Even the sweatshirt I got in 2009 (the specific 73 zip-up) is no longer available and it switched out (I still don't know what the 73 stands for lol). Its a shame they just keep changing every little thing. This ride is so special me and I'm just grateful that people have old footage of it. Thanks!!
I remember riding this back in 1995 (I was about 8 years old) and I absolutely loved it and to this day its my favorite ride at disneyworld I still have the taste of the water in my mouth
It has always been my favorite ride at WDW with 20,000 League's Underneath The Sea ride (before if was closed) I heard you can buy candles online that smell like the ride!
Lots of the other videos dub in the album audio which is fine and all but to me the atmospheric noise and chatter makes the experience complete. I appreciate the thoughtfulness you took when recording. It's so nostalgic and borderline emotional for me. Thank you
THIS is the ride I remember. My mom nearly lost her sun hat on the ride because a breeze came up and took it right off her head; one of the other passengers was able to catch it before it got too far. At four years old, it scared me too much, that I hid behind my mom the entire time.... and yet, when we got off, I asked to go on again.
When I was around four years old, this ride actually didn't scare me and I kept wanting to ride it over and over. However, I hid behind my mom while riding the Haunted Mansion and was absolutely terrified. I just remember her tapping my shoulder to look at the "dancing ghosts" on the ballroom floor than immediately went back into hiding until we were about to get off the ride and thought the "ghost" sitting to me on our cart was real. When I brought my daughter when she was 3 years old to WDW, she wasn't afraid of both rides, but hated the It's A Small World ride. The ride broke down when we were on it and were stuck in the same spot for 20 minutes while having to listen to that song over and over. That was the most terrifying experience ever ! Lol
My favorite ride!!... Thanks to PC culture, Disney is gonna remove the "wench for sale" part of the ride soon. Went to Disneyland shortly after I heard the news just to experience this amazing ride before the change.
I still love seeing Depp, Rush, and frikkin Bill Nighy in the ride. However...the women chasing pirates and now the auction scene....eh....i'd refer to X Atencio who called it boy scouts of the caribbean.
I'm 18 right now and I remember riding this ride for the first or second time circa 2004, so that would put me around five. I am not sure if my memory is corrupted or what but I remember dropping down from that waterfall entryway with the talking skull right into the Louisianan town getting plundered. I remember the surrounding buildings looking distinctly taller too, like 3-4 stories tall. The animatronics were popping their heads out the windows and the cartoonish violence took place below. It kinda looked like a Small World/POTC hybrid. The cavern sequence I have almost no recollection from that particular ride. Since then I've ridden the ride many times and the general format seems unchanged even from 1990. I used to be terrified of riding this until I was about 8 or 9, so maybe I had my eyes covered for a majority of the ride. Still, the images stick in my mind detached from any known reality.
Very cool to see what it was like before the movies! I was born in 2002 so I never got to see it like this, but it is very awesome! Thanks for uploading! There are plus sides about the old version and down sides. Just like the new version. Either way, if they kept the ride like this, it would still be my second favorite ride next to the Haunted Mansion.
@@SirBuzz I think the barker bird was at the tiki room. also you can actually see(and control) the animatronic at the Disney family museum in san Francisco
old VHS video camera...they don't record well in low light, makes everything seem far darker than it is.But I am sure it was truly darker back then. Now everything is so lit up with more advanced lighting it takes away the raw and creepiness
I have an audio cassette of the ride from 1977 and the only thing different was after the first drop you heard a verse of "YO HO" with solo pirates doing the verses. I hope that made sense.
Daniel Alonzo Cital Thank you for your comment! I have been going on the Pirates of the Caribbean since it opened in 1967 and it has always had only the two drops into the Caribbean!
I never rode the old/original version of POTC. Often when riding these days, I wonder what was between the treasure room and the ship battle scene (now there's the curtain of mist with the projection of Davy Jones). Doesn't look like there was much there other than the voices.
There was nothing there only the blacknes of the cave and the Pirate voices which at the time was kinda spooky then at the end of the cave we see the Pirate ship! Cool question and comment - thank you!
This version was probably more like the one we went on at Disneyland Paris in the 1990s. But it might have been slightly different, like at rides there are. I suppose with the "PofC" movie franchise being so successful, it made sense for them to change it.
As much as Barbossa is cool he should stay in just the movies, it's a shame that almost all of Paul Freeses voice work for the ride has almost been entirely erased.
The 2 drops are still there at the beginning of the ride That’s the only way you can get below ground level since the ride is below ground level is where the ride is housed that’s why at the end of the ride there’s a hill that you climb to go back to ground level.
I identify with TexasWholesaler's comment, I was the around the same age as him at this time. It makes me almost cry to remember my fond memories at Disneyland and from this ride before... it was overhauled to be more politically correct and to incorporate more franchise elements. To think I was one of the last people who saw this ride in its more original form.
@GIBBYfreek Thank you, my favorite ride is Pirates of the Caribbean! On my channel if you go to my playlist I have older videos of the ride and slideshows of pictures and Postcards there too!
The real Pirates of the Caribbean. By 2046, for its 75th anniversary Pirates will be made great again and restored to its former 1967 glory with the auction restored and no more Jack Sparrow or other movie references. I guarantee it.
@solidmario1 I think for the most part it would be the same but they would add and update the some of the pirates much like they did before the movie ever came out. On my channel playlist I have almost all my Pirates of the Caribbean videos since 1990 for the reason to show what changes they have done with the ride!
This is really cool! I only remember it being all new and Pirates of the Caribbean-y. I've always wondered how it was in the late 60s (when it opened), but the 90s will do :)
The new version is way less classic and fun and cheerful the new version is like IM GONNA DROP YOU AND SCARE YOU AND NOT SING HO HO HO HO A PIRATES LIFE FOR ME MWAHAHAHHA
Godly _Awsomeness1111 the drops in this vid look about the same. I was scared the drop would be too much for my 2yo but he loved it. More singing pirates is always a good thing though!
+CrazyForLego Yes, kinda, there was a heavy set animatronic Pirate that sat on a couple of Barrels just on the bottom corner of the waterfall that your boat go's up! In the late nineties they took out the pirate on the shaking barrols and put in two pirates one pushing up a large treasure chest full of booty up the incline next to the watterfall and and another pirate pulling it up with a rope wraped around the treasure chest right where Jack Sparrow sits now, they took out the two pirates and the treasure chest and put Jack in there place! The blinking eyes have allways been in the attraction from the very beginning when it opened!
When I was a Young lad I always wanted to be in the actual ride among the pirates. Ok fine I still do.... it would be extremely cool but also kind of creepy.
I wonder were the original animatronic pirate sword wielding captain is now...probably collection dust and falling apart in a backroom warehouse.Instead they ruin it by putting a johnny depp pirate on the boat
Nah you’re not crazy. I was born in 1996 and went to Disney World in 2005 before they added the movie animatronics in 2006 when the second Pirates movie came out.
MrDisneyfanman oh ok hah! all my life I thought the ride was based off of the movie until I read that Walt rode it and that it was his last disneyland ride before his death and I got confused. thanks
Mad props to whoever held the like 10 pound VHS camera for 10 minutes to record this in the 90s 😂😂
I concur! My dad was this type of guy that documented all family vacations always lugging around heavy a VHS camera and all it's accessories.

Best version of it for sure!! Really wish they didn’t make so many changes to a classic like this! None of the newer versions even compare to this.
Ah.. The real pirates.. I miss this
yup
Bring it back to this! This was way better!!!
Damned straight.
Much better

Thanks for the cool info Matey!
Thank you for sharing this vid. My grandparents took me here as a child in the early 90's and it was nice to be able to sort of relive it.
The part that starts at 3:10 is what I miss the most from this ride! Thank you for this!
Back when the pirates chased the women around, LOL! Thank you for all these videos. Takes me back to when I was a kid :-)
Thats why I put the videos so people can see Disneyland's past!
Thank you for your cool comment!
Yep! This was even before they changed the pirate holding the lady's lingerie and her hiding in the barrel.
Disney is so woke now its sad..Walt Disney is turning over in his grave.

It's so hard to capture the magic of a dark ride. Especially with 90s equipment.
I miss the pirates chasing the women.
I always use to crack up at the angry lady chasing the pirate

guevara7E I got to record that part on my iPhone (it was at WDW though) when I went last Thanksgiving. 😉
Feminism strikes again.
Omg why did they change the way the harpsichord sounds it sounds so much better in the 90s
Thanks for sharing! brought back some wonderful memories

Thanks so much for posting it like it used to be. 🥰

gotta love the 90s

Sweet! This is my favorite ride, too tied along with Splash Mountain, "it's a small world!", and Big Thunder :)
This year they took out one of the three pirates who were singing in the beginning of the fire scene
We wants the redhead!
I like it before the change the stuff to incorporate with the movies.
lol I can't wait to hoist my colors into that lasy
Weird. I remember there being more than two drops in the ride before the changes.

I miss the old Pirate Ship Captain. Barbossa or Captain Pegleg as I like to call him doesn't creep me out as much. Geoffrey Rush is no Paul Frees.
As much as Barbossa is cool he should stay in just the movies, it's a shame that almost all of Paul Freeses voice work for the ride has almost been entirely erased.
And since they put barbossa in they should have left him in his pirate attire not his privateer outfit
This is waay creepier than the ride in its present state
cool
I was born in the 90s and miss the old ride and too bad they removed one of the drops I believe
The 2 drops are still there at the beginning of the ride That’s the only way you can get below ground level since the ride is below ground level is where the ride is housed that’s why at the end of the ride there’s a hill that you climb to go back to ground level.
that sounds good too
I identify with TexasWholesaler's comment, I was the around the same age as him at this time. It makes me almost cry to remember my fond memories at Disneyland and from this ride before... it was overhauled to be more politically correct and to incorporate more franchise elements. To think I was one of the last people who saw this ride in its more original form.
+Erika Miller Thank you for your cool comment!
overhauled? you mean keelhauled! haha
Thank you!!
I love pirates!!!!
Had a chance to see it in 95 before the movie tie in.
I honestly like the addition of Barbosa
aww! Thanks for posting! This ride sucks now post movies. I miss this... :(
Thank you for your comment, I miss the old Pirates too but I still love this ride, it is my favorite ride at Disneyland even now!
but i like the audio and jack sparrow update
Missy EpicMaster It's interesting to see how disney upgrades the rides now and then!
i love the jack sparrow update!
The jack sparrow update ruined it for me and y family. The movie was based on the ride, not vice versa.
@minecraftman781 I do too, I think it is a great way to start the ride!
I remeber being excited about what color boat i was going to get, now the boats are so plain and boring. sorry just my opinion.
I saw the Disney World Version with Jack and I thought it was nice!
Cool, I havent been to Disney World yet!
Nice video!
@GIBBYfreek
Thank you, my favorite ride is Pirates of the Caribbean!
On my channel if you go to my playlist I have older videos of the ride and slideshows of pictures and Postcards there too!
Or find Professor Peabody and ask him if he could take you back to 1990 in his Wayback Machine?
The real Pirates of the Caribbean. By 2046, for its 75th anniversary Pirates will be made great again and restored to its former 1967 glory with the auction restored and no more Jack Sparrow or other movie references. I guarantee it.
Yeeaah!
They brought the cave audio back !!
that means ur gonna go down!!!!! whooo
Thank you!
wow, they have really changed a lot on this ride, for I just got back from Orlando, and I didn't like the newer version of this ride.
I think most people like the original Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland best, its a longer ride too!
@solidmario1 Would it be the young Johnny of 1990 or the old Johnny 2011?
The new version is way less classic and fun and cheerful the new version is like IM GONNA DROP YOU AND SCARE YOU AND NOT SING HO HO HO HO A PIRATES LIFE FOR ME MWAHAHAHHA
Godly _Awsomeness1111 the drops in this vid look about the same. I was scared the drop would be too much for my 2yo but he loved it. More singing pirates is always a good thing though!
the current version still has Pirates Life for Me tho what are you talking about
When I got back from the trip I had to see the doctor about Tension Headaches I got from holding it on my shoulder!
No Kidding!
Ouch!
Ah, the ride in all its original non-pc, non-Johnny Depp splendor!
I love the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, but wish they left the ride alone.
I'm actually surprised that there's no music in the middle part
I miss Blackbeard! lol
Always wanted to eat at the restaurant
I was there! 6/8/18
Thanks for the video! I've been curious, was there anything else other than the blinking eyes, at the end, where Jack Sparrow is now?
Arr Matey that it would be!
QUESTION! Do they still have the old ride
.?
I never understand why the cave guy after the skeletons before the shooting ship sounds so... Moany? Like.... Bootstrap bill? I dunno..
I knew there was two drops
I wonder were the original animatronic pirate sword wielding captain is now...probably collection dust and falling apart in a backroom warehouse.Instead they ruin it by putting a johnny depp pirate on the boat
Actually the original pirate captain is in Disneyland Paris
And the new captain is actually Geoffrey Rush
Maybe I’m crazy but I remember when this ride was like this, but I wasn’t even born until 1997. When did they change it?
Nah you’re not crazy. I was born in 1996 and went to Disney World in 2005 before they added the movie animatronics in 2006 when the second Pirates movie came out.
Davy Jones and I'll be riding the high seas 🌊
RIP Xavier Atencio. 😢 (I know he died last year but I love the guy - he almost got to be a centenarian! Hey, 98 is still close to 100...)
It’s cool to see how it used to look! But tbh I’m glad they changed it. I felt a little uneasy watching this lol.
I can't believe they made Sea of Thieves into a ride
so was the movie actually based on the ride?
Yes i was!
When you watch the movie Pirates of the Carraibbean they have scenes of the ride in some parts of the movie!
Thank your cool question!
MrDisneyfanman oh ok hah! all my life I thought the ride was based off of the movie until I read that Walt rode it and that it was his last disneyland ride before his death and I got confused. thanks
Your more than welcome!
A ride from 1967 being based on a movie series from the 2000s? What do you think?
Walt died before the ride was finished
