This brought back a lot of memories! I remember riding the Metro back in the 1980s when it was still relatively brand new in some parts. It still looks the same! Very clean! I always thought it had a Star Wars feel to it based on the architecture. And I like how the little round lights still blink in the floor next to the track when a train is about to approach the station.
Because I use this system daily, I guess I notice its problems more. Because I rely on it to get to work, I notice its delays and hiccups (all too common), its nearly non-functional PA systems, its broken fare gates & machines, its almost complete lack of supervision, its terrible integration with regional bus services (including its own Metro buses), etc.. They have done a lot to improve performance over the last 5 years after the system went into a freefall of failure (resulting in fires, derailments, crashes, and a few fatalities). There was a point where I was taking an extra 30 minutes to commute to work because I could do 90% of it by bus. Every minute on the train felt like I was taking my life in my hands. It's much better now. As a system, it has a long way to go to be even a ghost of many of the European metro systems I've been on, but compared to a lot in the States, it's not so bad. And hey, 40+ years later, it's almost ready to be able to take you from the city to the airport...which should have been the first thing it did...
Negativity aside, I'm glad you got one of our new trains. They're pretty cool. The kinda ratty old ones are still in service, but the new ones are getting more prevalent.
It's so weird to see it so empty, especially during what is normally 'rush.' In normal times, these stations would be packed with people this time of day.

DuPont Circle was my first exposure to DC's Metro back in 1979. We were staying in a hotel near where the National Zoo Station is now (was just a black hole in the ground then) and had to take a bus to it. Getting to the Zoo: unless you like walking up a long hill (a lot of that in the Zoo) do NOT use the Zoo (Woodley Park) station. Get off at Cleveland Park and walk south to the entrance. It is only slightly farther (on a flat surface) than walking up the hill. You can go to either station when leaving.
