NYC is like doing everything you need to achieve your goal (job, studies, career in general) and then leaving. It's not a city to live forever, it's temporary, especially in the medium term.
Jason when I was going to work it looked like that and smelled like that. I see nothing has changed. Been working home for 2 yrs thank God. Hope you and mom are doing well. Thanks for sharing the truth about the NYC a subway. My husband leaves at 3 am to take the F train and I hear all about it. Nasty and sad.
Omg I feel for him. I haven't taken the subway in 4 years. Freaks me out. I took it one time with my 7 yo when he was 3yo I vowed to never have him witness such filth.
I’m glad you did this cause MTA doesn’t think that it looks like this, no supervision to make sure things are properly cleaned, and only penn station scary looking lol
MTA is fully aware of this they do not have the budget nor a strategy in dealing with it. Remember this is NYC for every 1 person that says kick sleepers off trains there are 5 activists saying that is anti-poverty and moves homelessness instead of solving it (they're right). This is also the condition of low ridership due to the rona, high ridership normally fixes these problems naturally but yes the issue of violence and disorder on the mta is only getting worse
Thanks, Jason, fascinating, but equally very sad footage to see. I'm living in the UK, and very familiar with the London Underground, from the 1970s onwards. It makes me feel so sad seeing so many homeless people in NYC, I realise of course we have similar here in the UK. Still heartbreaking to see. 💔 God bless us all. 💞 You seem to be a very nice man by the way, Jason. Best wishes,Tim
Fortunately, I haven't had the need to use the nyc subway or busses for over 20 years now and it is a huge relief. Commuting from 5:30 am to 10am and 2:30pm to 5:20pm was the worst especially during school days. The fights, the super packed spaces, arguments, delays, odors and overall weirdness was too much. After midnight was another story. I can't imagine how it is today.
As I've been saying for over a decade, real estate prices are far too high for such a dump. NY isn't the jewel it was in the 50s. Today, it's a rundown garbage dump..
I do appreciate someone who Agrees with me new York city needs help with the homeless problem it's sad that the best country in the world can't help this people with work and Employment and a room for rent that the cites pays for for 1 year to get these people kn there feet. This is exactly why I say New York City is a garbage dump.
Hi Jason i was born and raised in East New York Brooklyn in the late 1940s. 1960s and when i was seperated from military service in 1967 i lived in Freeport Long Island. i left new York for Florida in 1971 and have lived here ever since. those subway stations and the trains are alot cleaner than what i remember them as being, but it is still New York and the part people don't get to see. thanks for this video do more of these please.
Hi Frank, I'm a lot younger than you, I've been born and raised in NY. Really fascinates me that the subway is cleaner now than it was back then. I would have thought the opposite. Since I use the subway every day, it works quite well for me fortunately!
it got a lot better with Guilliani and his no-mercy policing approach, then the Bush and Obama years crime nationally was falling anyways so the MTA was very clean and safe then last 4-5 years it has slightly gotten worse, but NOWHERE near as bad as it was in the 70s and 80s. homeless people need help not to get kicked off but the subway cannot be a homeless shelter that just hurts ridership even more and makes the problem worse. the MTA is starting down this vicious cycle of crime scaring off ridership, and high ridership generally= lower crime.

I'm surprised that West 4th Street is that empty at 2AM but then you said its a Sunday night when you filmed this!!! Its the crazy and sad part of our city. Be careful though when recording!!!
The lowest level of the West 4th Street Station has got to be one of the hottest in the system during the late Summer months. Stifling humidity also adds to the misery.
The reason why you're seeing homeless people living on subways is because the gang violence, other violent offenders, mentally ill, and poor conditions have made the homeless shelters run wild. They can't take the horrible conditions of those shelters and would rather have peace on Subways where people taking public transportation will most likely leave them alone and not be bothered.
I wish that were true (then we could just clean up the shelters....) but from what I see as an MD it is untreated mental illness (refusing meds, their “right” and drug/alcohol use-shelters throw people out who are caught using and won’t obey curfews and rules.

I am Swedish and planning to go to New York. Your video showing 30 minutes of subway shows openly and honestly what it's actually like down there, during that time. Your video is very important to us outside of New York, to create a situational picture that makes us aware, but we should not be terrified. I already knew it would be bad in the subway, but here it's like actually experiencing it. Overall, New York is full of social problems, but also a city of great experiences, full of culture, history, entertainment and fun. I would probably not discourage people from going there, but be on your guard, and be aware of the risks. Summary. Go there and enjoy, but be aware of the risks.
This was taken as NYC was still recovering from COVID, overnight and I am thinking when it was cold so the homeless go down there to stay warm. It is quite different since then. Lots more riders, less homeless.
That station always creeped me being hard to find your way to street level . Yeah instead of sleeping on the street overnight, people turn to subway shelter
Don't know if my last post made it. I'm a retired NYC subway conductor(1983-2014). My childhood was of scary incandescent stations, dark tunnels, REALLY noisy trains. The change to flourescent lights was actually a big thing. W4? That's Covid empty. It usually rivals 42 or 34. Been there a few overnights.
I worked for NYC Transit for almost 38 years, most as an Operations Manager for Subways. This was docile compared to what I saw in the years I worked midnights (1985 and 2009-2010).
Even at that hour one has to wait forever for a train. At least the subway cars are clean which were graffitied from about 1967-1990. The 1970's through the 1980's the trains were a mess with constant train fires and derailments. It's tragic this country has such a homeless and bad drug problem.
Some of these people sleeping in the train are homeless.....but some are exhausted from work three jobs and or school...life is life in the big city ❤NYC
Thank God for those of us that have a warm place to sleep, and a roof over our heads. We do not kow how these individuals became homeless. I pray that God will form a hedge of protection around all his people that are less fortunate. In addition a lot of people that you see on the trains are suffering from mental illness. Some of the shelters are dangerous.

I see your underground runs all thru the night. It looks quite depressing tbh. I live in London UK. Our underground system dont run all night, only a few lines at wkends. Most stop around 12ish midnight & start again at 5am. Our trains are over crowded but most our stations look cleaner then yours and better maintained, from what I see there. Phone mugging is high on our London streets here. especially by the stations. No drinking, smoking, allowed on our trains. All our stations close their gates up for the night. So you would have to rely on lots of bus connections to get around in the night. Great video....
I lived in the UK for a few years and rode the underground many times. It definitely feels safer than riding the subway, but the fares aren't as high. Also, the underground can sometimes get mighty uncomfortable when temperatures are high. Not in NYC.
I’m a black suburbanian, grew up in the suburbs and I’m happily staying in the suburbs, I travel alot sometimes to cities and id rather be in the burbs with less crime, less crackheads, less people, less smells and less taxes.
You have lots of balls to hang around the subways at this pandemic with all those homeless people everywhere. Prior to pandemic riding the subways at 2am was fine. Now it is scary.
Not really, they don’t bother anyone, they are just homeless. It’s been that way in the eighties as well, back then the trains were much worse and I rode the, all hours of the night.
I visited the US in 2019 and honestly could not believe the amount of homelessness. San Francisco was the worst. New York was just as bad, saw homeless people everywhere and some with serious mental health problems. Felt really bad for them, they should be in Mental health hospital, but I know the American health care system is a mess if you are poor.
Mental health hospital in the USA means shock therapy, lobotomies & doped to gills. Seen it firsthand & it provides a potent deterrent. Not much hope there at all. Out of sight, out of mind for you offended by the reality of the human condition, though. That's the saddest part.j
@@qjtvaddict If you are referring to the United States, it's free mental health "hospitals" are no less archaic in their practices than they ever were. In early December, I was taking the 1 train uptown to the Upper West Side during AM rush. I saw a homeless man laying sideways on the seats. He was repeatedly vomiting on the ground. His vomit was slowly making its way across to the other side of the train car. Fortunately I was at the other end and didn’t have to stay on the train for long. I just wanted to see peoples reactions the moment they entered the car because usually when a car is practically empty, there’s a reason why. People ran out in disgust at the sight. Definitely the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen on the train. I’ve seen vomit on the train before but I’ve never seen someone repeatedly vomiting on the train. Fingers crossed that I never see a human defecate on the train. That would be horrifying.
I used to work in Queens NY @12AM I would take the 7 train, and it’s not a pleasant sight. So many homeless people. I couldn’t feel any anger at them because sometimes they take the whole wagon. It was not pretty. Feel bad for them to see them in such condition.
Thanks for the ride. It's been along time. A friend and I road the subway from the Bottom Line on Broadway into Brooklyn at 2 am. This was after we had a bad experience with a cab driver the night before. We had a can of hair spray and a cigarette lighter and planned to torch anyone who got too close. Thankfully law enforcement were riding our train and we had a much better experience than the night before with the cab driver. Gotta love the Big Apple 🍎.

I litterly live 3 blocks from this train. This video accurately depicts what life is like On Hôtel MTA. They should have all kinds of laws in effect that take place because to ride these trains at that hour of the night is literally impossible if they’re not sleeping next to you and you’re begging you for money some of them are so mentally ill they’ll pull a knife on you and it’s scary they need to do something about this homeless homeless in the situation these guys think they could ride the trains and sleep on them they don’t even paid again on how’s that

Very interesting, hope there can be some changes

As a New Yorker who grew up there, you are absolutely right.

Yep, I wouldn't last a minute living amongst this misery.
And the shelters receive around $4k per person from the state.

The change to flourescent lights was actually a big thing. W4? That's Covid empty. It usually rivals 42 or 34. Been there a few overnights.
So interesting
Rats on the subway platforms scare me to death. I was so startled and almost ran onto the track once.
You can hear them squeaking late at night.
Watching this made reminded me of some of the reasons why I left. It’s a harsh city.
There were some sketchy characters in this one. Glad you made it out of the subway safe dude.
Thnx. Yeah this was a weird night. Lol
Safety should be where wherever you go but so late at night walking around to every platform is sketchy in itself

Not in NYC.

I saw this video on Fire Stick TV it is sad and sickening what happens after hours but it's real. Yes I would like to see more. Thank you for taking the time to do this for the public.
Loved the video been to NYC 3 tines in my life please keep them coming
I enjoyed this video. It's interesting to take in the subway stations when it's so eerily quiet.
I've always wanted to ride the subway, its not as glamorous as I imagined.
What could possibly give you that idea 😂😂
@@jbullock7157 movies and TV
@@lucyfur9104 it still looks like trash even in the movies and tv lml
It's terrible. At 3am ppl sagging their pants hopping on the train with a BMX and wearing a bandana with a speaker blasting rap music. Drug deals in the open it's crazy and it stinks
The 1 and RW are usually fine. Mostly toursts, day traders and families.
If youre not from NY or have never been its massive. over 665 miles of track all packed in ~20 miles.
Didn't see 1 "cop" and I'm half way through the video
They don’t go in the subway at night and they have guns lol.
@@adamblack6867 They're no more "cops". Just associates degree wimps
