If you want to see more of Troy in his element, I would suggest ”I want my tears back” Buenos Aires, 2018.

I noticed that you kept busy after your last reaction to Nightwish: Epica, Babymetal, Bloodywood, Sabaton, Jijjer, Ayreon .. :) I watched some of them.
I like your analysis, because you come to valid conclusions with little data. I think that what you show in terms of music can be called analytical talent. I call it talent because it contains a significant dose of intuition. You may not have seen even 10% of what Troy can do, and yet you qualified him correctly. And what you said about Tuomas, I heard in a documentary from Pip Williams.
I look forward to your next analysis. Speaking of Kai today, maybe .. Wintersun? .. :)

Troy Donockley is British and plays various Irish instruments, like Irish bouzoukiv(boo-zoo-kee), mandola and uileann pipes, several tin flutes, and also guitar (Floor and Troy made a wonderful acoustic version of How's the Heart on PlanetRock).

As a fellow American, I’m loving this.
Growing up listening to whatever was on the radio sculpted me to not even venture down the path of a symphonic band from Finland. That was until I saw a reaction by KingKTF. From that moment on, Nightwish has changed my perception of music forever. I can’t imagine not finding this band. The world needs more Nightwish and Floor Jansen, and they don’t even know it.

I concur! Eric listening to this song will prepare you for the ‘Poet & the Pendulum’, about Tarja, original singer’s husband & the ultimate breakup that came as a result. The original members were school friends. The Poet & the Pendulum was about the tumultuous aftermath of that event. Very heavy, beautiful, & shows what a genius composer Tuomas is, & of course their is Floor, making us safe, even when she yells “I am a whore for the cold world”! 😉

I was a huge Rush and Pink Floyd fan in HS (1985 grad). Did not know almost everything I owned was “prog rock”…adding Moody Blues, ELP, ELO, Boston, Foreigner. Listen to much more, but return to those when current music sucks (often). Now I have Nightwish and feel more complete and satisfied that music has not yet died.

The sickest part of Floor replacing Anette, is that she was at that point healing from a serious burn-out, and wasn't very eager to get back into the saddle.
So in just 5 minutes while attending her sisters wedding she deicided to join Nightwish.

    • @Sumpula
      @Sumpula 3 роки тому +14

And it's funny that when they called her and before they could say anything she was like "can you call me back tomorrow" afterall she was attending her sisters wedding. Then she got a text message "All we wanted to ask if you would want to sing for Nightwish" and she was just shocked. :D Here is the Dutch tv feature which was shot just before and during the 2015 Tampere gig where she talks about how she came that far and how she was in life at that time. You can also see how she is as a person. ua-cam.com/video/B3NIfu0qvtg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=DavitLamazoshvili

On the call at her sisters wedding Floor was asked to stand in for Anette during her pregnancy leave (months later). Two weeks later she got a second call "please learn the setlist in 48 hours" ( ua-cam.com/video/F2nWX8BSWTU/v-deo.html )

In this line-up, Nightwish was very much an all-pro, if not an all-star band. You got the 2 founding members, with 18 years under their belt. Then Marko had over a dozen years with Tarot and SInergy before 2001 when he took NW to the next level. Floor had decade and a half with After Forever, Arjen's Star One, and her own ReVamp. Kai was highly regarded for nearly 20 years between WIntersun and Rotten Sound. Troy had his specialty multi-instrumentalist cred. That's a ton of studio and touring experience on that stage!

I’ve not seen (Sahara) mentioned as it’s rarely reviewed, admittedly a change of pace but a substantial experience and an exciting departure from the commonly reviewed catalog entry.

Hi Eric, another great and in-depth reaction. Troy is a fascinating member of Nightwish. A true multi-instrumentalist. Mostly he kinda works in the background, adding his part to the unique sound of the band, including background vocals. But when he gets out to shine, his performances are always amazing. I was surprised that you didn't mention Marko's guitar work when he dropped down from the bass on the double neck to the 6 string. That's when Troy and Marko doubled up on that breakdown. My request: 7 Days To The Wolves, Wembley concert. This is one of my favorites. Floor and Tuomas windmill so violently, that I get dizzy. if you go down the Beste Zangers 2019 rabbit hole then watch the Paul H version because he burned the English translations into the program. You couldn't do a reaction to the whole show because there are 8 shows and each is almost an hour but it gives a wonderful perspective on just what a kind of person she is and what comes through in each show is how she just blows everyone away every time it is her turn to perform. Try it some night where one of the kids is keeping you up for whatever reason.
BTW you do realize just how big she is right?
She stands about 6 foot one and her costumes often have 5 inch heels. So picture the meet and greet where you meet this woman that is standing about six foot six.. That's a lot of woman.

    So.... Kai Hahto :
Kai Hahto is "The Human Metronome", or in my book Kai "The Machine Gun" Hahto ( is a Finnish musician and drummer).
Someone once said , Jukka is playing like a Sith Lord and Kai is Playing like a Jedi Master 🤓.
Hahto was a member of the grindcore band Rotten Sound.
Hahto then recorded with the band Wintersun as a session drummer before joining them as a band member.
Hahto has an endorsement relationship with Meinl cymbals, Pearl drums and hardware, Balbex drumsticks, Roland V-Drums and Finfonic earphones.
On 6 August 2014, it was announced that Hahto will be playing drums on the forthcoming Nightwish album, replacing Jukka Nevalainen, who went on hiatus from the band due to insomnia, and Hahto performed on all live shows since that date. On July 15, 2019, Hahto became Nightwish's permanent drummer following Nevalainen's decision not to return to the band.
    And now Troy :
Troy Donockley "The Bard" (is an English composer and multi-instrumentalist most known for his playing of Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone). 10 points for Bouzouki !!!!!!
    Now The Song :
This one is against organized religions based on tribal religious texts, especially The Bible, it's not against personal faith in some Deity. However, one should realize that all those religious texts are & have been interpreted and used to justify unimaginable cruelties, persecution, discrimination etc., the worst being the idea that man is separate from nature & by some divine right above all other lifeforms, which explains the current almost catastrophic state of our planet.
lyrics are spot on - so many fractures in our world have a root in the fantasy that each of the religions/sects/whatever are THE ONE way. This song speaks, with anger, against the fact that we humans are destroying ourselves and this world based on a power structure that needs to be made obsolete - we ALL deserve better.

Jukka is a Tama drummer and Kai uses Pearl. Troy plays the Irish bouzouki and a couple of dozen other instruments. Troy comes from northern England, a very Celtic area of the country, so he tends to use traditional Celtic instruments.
If you just want to concentrate on Floor's unique abilities, she just dropped "Face You Demons" today, from her recent solo show. It dates from her first band After Forever and she has taken the edge off of it for a Dutch, mostly mainstream, audience. The band backing her up is primarily a pop band and they're on record talking about the challenge to play metal. BTW, Floor wrote this song, ua-cam.com/video/4sg1SVQ_QvQ/v-deo.html

Brings me to tears everytime with their powerful performance. It's haunting, it's spiritual, it's powerful, it's uplifting, it's a helluva rollercoaster ride. And in the middle, Kai THUNDERS the arena with his mid-song drum solo. Having actually seen it live myself (in a much smaller venue compared to Tampere or Wembley, a college auditorium), he rumbled the air throughout the venue. You FELT his drums throughout your body. So Tuomas has spun another rainbow for you, then?! 🙂 He's rather good at it....genius, in fact! You are correct about Troy playing the bouzouki, but that's only the tip of his iceberg. Here's a list I found of what he plays; Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, low whistle, vocals, guitar (sometimes with eBow), keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone. Quite a strong Celtic and folk influence in his chosen instruments.
He also writes and composes. He, Tuomas and Tuomas's lovely wife, Johanna Kurkala have a side project, under the name of Auri, which I recommend you check out. Think of Maggie Reilly, and you will be close to what Johanna sounds like.
Here's a link to an interview with all three of them. No need to react to this...it's just for your enjoyment.
    ua-cam.com/video/iaeaCSfcFkw/v-deo.html
A beautiful composition, from the mind of Tuomas, 'A lifetime of Adventure', with Johanna providing crystal clear, soaring vocals.

You also pick up on the chemistry between the band, and I believe this is one of the most important apsects which makes Nightwish fans love them so much, and be so loyal. I have posted many times, I know of few bands who enjoy their craft as much as Nightwish. They really have fun, and wee Emppu is usually in the thick of it!

What an awesome Saturday treat! Ayreon & Nightwish! Great choice! The lyrics of this song are a great dive too. With Jukka and Kai - agree fully w what you said. Jukka sits very low in that pocket - like he's prowling. Kai is more reserved appearance wise, but you still see the technician he is and the joy he gets from playing. So simply stated - they are both equally amazing - Jukka prowls the drums, and Kai is a human metronome - and both do what they do perfectly.
Another thing you said about being as close to perfection as possible - reminded me of something. A dear friend that is Jewish and studies Ancient Hebrew and Aramaic taught me this (she sparked off my endeavor to learn about these things). It also ties into the lyrics of this song a bit bc its a stab at organized religion and what all has been done under the banner of the Church throughout history. In religion (we have a deep Fath in G-d in our home, but we are not religious) you have that hammered in concept of sin. When you go back to the original texts and start working through the translations from the Ancient Hebrew and Aramaic (the language spoken in Jesus' time) to English, things begin to take on a different light; a much better one in my opinion. The concept of sin has been used to quietly/passively mold behaviors - and to control through fear - fear of sin and eternal damnation. Sin isn't as presented. It's equated to "missing the mark". The archer can never hit a true & perfect bullseye. It's impossible to hit it precisely. And sin was equated to an archer simply missing the mark. One does the best one can, and an enlightened being will always strive for the closest thing to perfection they can. The intent is of the light, and sometimes, we miss the mark a bit. Sin is merely a mistake; a thing those of the light don't intend to make. The redemption comes in the recognition of missing that mark, and the endeavor to never miss that mark again; and also to correct the mistake if possible/needed. We each have the Divinity and grace of the Kingdome of G-d within us. Enlightenment. Many single words take pages to define because the definition of that single word is an entire concept. So many fascinating things. I'll not go further bc I can go on for DAYS haha!
Apologies for the drawn out story! But this song & its lyrics, in addition to your comments, sparked that off in my brain. I figured there was a reason, and I should just share it. I will be a student until I take my last breath. There has always been a joy to learning or gaining a deeper comprehension for me. Studies in conciousness, the lexicon of different time periods/areas of the world, war, history, and beyond. I'm a huge nerd, and I'm always happy to learn something new or even to see something in a different light. Brevity is definitely not my ally this evening!
Great video, Eric. Thanks for the time you put into giving your thoughts and perspective! I already left 2 suggestions on the Ayreon video, so I'll not be greedy here. I've taken up enough of your time! Hope you & your boys have an amazing evening! Blessings!

No worries! You're awesome! My dad used to say, "Show me a man done messing up, and you'll soon hear a Eulogy", and we weren't a religious home, but we did follow basic tenants. He raised us to see religion as a source of power over a source of enlightenment, and that has to do with humans, not G-d. False prophets, and whatnot. But that's a whole other can of worms! As always, thank you for your comment and kindness!
      Cheers!
      Eric

Late to the party, so I don’t know if you’ll even read this - but christ, I can’t wait for you to experience some of their newest work!
It isn’t written in stone, that you have to do all the older songs, before diving into the new album.
I've seen a few reactors alternate between the old songs and the new ones, after first having seen a handful of the old ones - switching between the lyric music videos and live performances that wat, actually worked really well :)
I also agree with whoever it was, who suggested “7 Days to the Wolves” (Wembley) and “Song of Myself” (Wacken), not only are they super good, but they by far have some of the most unique musical structures, even by Nightwish standards - and I’d love love to see your reaction to them :D
Oh, and ill save one of the really good beers for the day you do The Greatest Show On Earth (Tampere) - telling the evolutionary story of the earth through a 20+ min song - seeing your mind being absolutely blown, is going to be epic!
You’ve quickly become one of my favourite reactors/analysts of NW songs - and the closest competition is really high caliber.
Thank you for making these wonderful videos for us fans to enjoy :)

      Just one suggestion, btw:
We are here to hear what YOU have to say (we’ve all prob heard these songs at least a few hundred times), so don’t be afraid to share your wonderful music wisdom, and please do let us hear your voice properly.
In most, if not all your NW videos, your voice is often very faint and hard to hear, when you make comments while the video is playing. They are often wonderful “in-the-moment” thoughts said out loud, and I get the dads when they’re not quite audible :(
I’m not sure if it’s the volume, or if you’re just a bit far away from your mic?
Anyway, just thought I’d let you know. It’s by no means a complaint - just an observation I thought I’d share :)
Im so sorry for the overly long comments - I guess I just had too much to tell you >.

Hi Sir, how are you? You talk about Floor providing a "safe blanket" the way she sings... that was a a-ha moment for me, something I felt, but could never put into words (so thanks for that...😉). For you to react to these songs and analyse them kind of provides the same feeling...I can't deny that it's a 'soothing' (English isn't my native language, so bear with me...) feeling hearing a knowledgeable man like yourself liking this band I love. Don't get me wrong; you could trash them every day of the week and twice on Sundays, it wouldn't change my love and respect for them (or you, although I would start questioning your taste...😂) for one nano-second...😊 but still... thank you for your reaction, great fun and educational as always. Have a great weekend Sir, be safe.

OK I REALLY LIKE YOUR PROGRAM. IT IS REFRESHING TO HEAR AN OLDER GUY, I AM 73, REALLY LISTENING TO AND LOVING THIS BAND AS MUCH AS I LIKE TO. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING MUSIC SINCE 8TH GRADE AND OUTSIDE PLAYING IN ORCHESTRA, THESE PEOPLE BLOW ME AWAY, YES TUOMAS IS IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN. OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS I AM GLAD TO SEE YOU DIVE DOWN THE NIGHTWISH RABBIT HOLE. AND A POINT OF INTREST IS THAT KAI WAS JUKA'S DRUM INSTRUCTOR WHEN HE WAS YOUNGER, THEY HAVE BEEN FRIENDS FOR A LOMG TIME.

Your reaction is as much a joy to watch as the song itself. Your comments are precisely to the point. I absolutely share your amazement for this band and Floor. Together they are like 1+1=3
For me the absolute best in music. Only Arjen Lucassen comes close ( other genre but still...)
Like yourself I worked at several radio stations in the Netherlands. For 20 years.... A lot of shit was broadcasted, as it is today. Never anything like this was promoted. To the point that for a couple of years not a person in the Netherlands knew who Floor Jansen was. Never heard of.... Only some metal lovers knew but they are not mainstream in the Netherlands. And then she participated in a Dutch TV show with singers singing each other song called "Beste zangers" ( best singers). That woke up the Dutchies. She blew everyone away and was famous and loved in virtually seconds . Someone reacted in a reaction video: The worst thing that can happen to you as a professional artist is that Floor makes a cover from your song or hit. You immediately loose that song. She does it better and owns that song from that moment onwards. It is not what she tries to achieve. She is a gorgious sweet human being. But that's just how it goes.....
