- How to aerate lawn: 1) mow your lawn 2) mark any sprinklers 3) water your lawn (if it's dry) 3) run the aerator!
It really is easy to aerate your lawn yourself. The hardest part is getting the core aerator out of your vehicle. Just take your time and don't worry if you've never done this, you can do it!

Finally! Thought I'd never see you aerate. You'll be amazed at the results. One of the best things you can do for turf imo.
Yeah we will see 😀
Just did my aeration today. Finally Massachusetts is back to normal temperature wise. Double pass is all I could handle. 😀
You made it look pretty simple. Thanks
Thanks!
I have the same one as you. Love it!!
It works really well!
Another great video
Thanks!
That thing looks like a walk in the park compared to some I’ve used. Nice!
yeah it is much wider than other aerators I've used!
I aerated on Saturday too, but I have an attachment for my lawn tractor which gets weighted down with 5 cinder blocks and is pulled. But it essentially does the same thing.
yes, except it's much easier on your body =P
I’m skipping aeration this year. Going heavy with prodiamine. I have been using the N-EXT products and i think that Air8 is working really well. I am able to stick my finger right into the ground. I know that sounds funny, but i can push my finger down 2-3 inches with no problems. My soil is mostly clay so this is a huge improvement.
awesome! how often do you apply it?
I applied it once in the spring and just applied second app this past weekend.
I want to aerate and overseed, but I need to put down pre-emergent and get control over the annual bluegrass, crabgrass etc...
how did it handle the hills?
Thanks for this. I’ve been watching your channel for a while and have picked up a lot of good tips. I have several areas in my yard that are full clover/weeds not grass. Would you recommend I try spraying them first to kill that off or just aerate everything and then seed? Thanks in advance.
Depends on how long till frost. If you have plenty of time then I'd kill the weeds first.
Wow that aerator is way easier than the one my rental shop has.
Yeah it was super wide, made for a quick job
GD.. do you feel the liquid air8 you applied earlier is not sufficient? Is that why you went with core aeration? How do you feel about liquid versus manual core aeration?
I've always done liquid products but this year I'm trying core to see if it's worth the hype. So I'll let you know!
Grass Daddy : than how are you going to know what worked better?
What's your calendar window for aerating? Thanks. ✌️
When the temps start to drop. Not really a calendar thing per say.
Looks like the summer was tough on the old kbg. Did you have water restrictions in your area?
oh boy was it! yes we can only water twice a week, and it was over 80 most of the summer, 90+ a lot of the time. really brutal!
Grass Daddy I thought so. It will come back! Btw, I’d love it if you checked out my channel that I kicked off in August and get in on the zero-g giveaway I am running right now. Thanks for all the great content.
Hey man, in your experience, if you treat a weed or let's just say crab grass and it starts to look like its dying, if you water your lawn will it bring the crab grass back to life? I'm stuck figuring out how to get my inch of water a week without bringing treated crabgrass back in the process. Also, can you blanket spray quinclorac?
Keep watering - the weeds need to thrive to soak in the weed killer. And yes you can blanket spray
FIRST!!! GREAT VIDEO
thanks!
cut lawn as short as you can with the mower,,,then thatch the lawn if it needs it,,,then aerate and over seed the lawn and water twice daily for 2 weeks,,,results will be #1 lawn in the neighborhood
no need to overseed with KBG but everything else, yes! although I didn't dethatch, I might later but timing wise I had access to the machine so I went with it!
Looks like the lawn took a summer beating.
Boy did it ever!
Hi Tim, you think it's too late to aerate and overseed up here in our area (Worcester, MA). My aerator guy's machine was broken. I told him it may be too late for that.
Could be, might not be, they are still doing it around here. Really depends on if winter comes early or late
Oh, wait till after the storm passes. They say could be 3 inches and that will wash the seed away.
Nice shirt out of my budget bro
Thanks! Yeah I'm looking into possibly having the shirts made locally and shipping them to cut down costs but I haven't gotten that far yet.
I think "moist" is probably my favourite word in the English language. 😂😂😂😂😂
hahaha my wife hates it but I think it's hilarious
I see you wearing that craftsman hat lately. Have you thought about a pull behind one. For the price of renting yearly you could get a small old school mower with no deck to use at your work horses.
I got one last yr for 160 bucks
Well it's a friend's so it was free to borrow =P
@@GrassDaddy hey, no fair
Can’t beat a Honda GX160, that’s the engine powering this aerator. Also don’t forget to locate and flag your underground pet fence if you have one.
Great point! I've seen a lot of those wires running ON TOP of the soil.
I’m also skipping aeration because it kicks my ass! 35,000 square feet of aeration does a number on my knees, back, kidneys, heart and gizzard. Ha ha
haha yeah it is a lot of work, my lawn has shrunk over the years so it wasn't bad but 35k I'd pass =P
This is only for cool season grasses.
Warm season grass should be done end of spring
Yeah I'm a cool season guy!
Are you going to be dethatching this year also?
I might be, lots of dead blades of grass in there
Order of operation.... cut low... aerate.... seed.... thatcher set looooow
Should have used your aeration shoes from earlier video! Lol
Haha that reminds me they sent me an updated pair I should show you guys lol they are very serious about perfecting aeration shoes
Hope to aerate soon... if I did, I would rent an aerator that goes faster
Unfortunately around here at least there is no choice. This was a friend's but the rental units are the same speed but thinner so at least this one was nice and wide!
I hope to rent an aerator this Saturday from home depot. Look forward to that video next week. Just need weather cooperation and my dad's help
The aerator is a heavy machine and needs to be heavy to puncture the soil to pull core plugs out. Consequently, if you have a large yard or a yard with several obstacles in it that you will need to avoid this machine can kick your ass and wear you out. As you said in the video, be sure to water your lawn thoroughly for at least two days before aerating to soften the ground to get good, deep plugs out of it. Leave the plugs in the lawn and let them break down naturally and replenish the soil. As you said, it is good to make at least two passes over your yard that are perpendicular to each other, however, the more passes you make and the more holes in the ground you make the better it is for your soil/lawn. Aeration reduces soil compaction, opens up the soil to more water and air and any bio-nutrients that you want to add to your lawn. It aids in making your soil and your grass healthier. It can be a day of hard work manhandling an aerator over your yard a few times, but the results are well worth the effort.
yeah if you have anything burried under your lawn you'll feel it for sure!
Have you been irrigating? Your grass looks pretty stressed...
Yup two inches a week! It's been brutally hot this summer, gonna be in the 90s again this week. But the water ban is lifted so I'm watering twice a day now till the heat goes away!
I guess you got tired of using your Lawn Aerator Shoes 😊
haha I should have worn them while doing this!
The t shirt has more hair than you! 😀
hahaha
GD Did you make this video bc of my last comment?
If it was yesterday's comment than technically I aerated before you commented =P but I've been wanting to do a video on it for a while and I wanted to make it before fall aerations so people have a video to reference
Your day job has to be in an office setting
Yes
Classic kid response.
Lol
Why do i watch this guy take care of his grass?
If it makes you feel better, I watch them too. So I'm watching myself take care of my grass..
Because he often make mistakes and has had several fails. His kids are cute and I learned what not to do.
Someone gets me!
