I sent soil samples to Michigan State. They told me that with my soil and my grass that once every 4 years was good. I rented a walk behind and we slit seeded after. It broke up the plugs. It worked great.
That’s great! The need for aeration would be determined mostly by your soil type. In the southeast, we have a lot of clay in our soil and it doesn’t allow water to soak in well. Aeration helps tremendously and many lawns here benefit from annual aeration. Golf courses here aerate multiple times each year.
Hey - thank you for this video. Really awesome. 1) which core aerator do you show in the video? 2) when do you overseen? Should i do this after i aerate the lawn? Thank you again for suggestions
I’m not sure what brand this one is. I didn’t make the original purchase. There are several companies with similar models. I have Bermuda so we don’t overseed. It spreads rapidly on its own when healthy. Yes aeration is a great idea before overseeding some other types of grass.
Seeding depends on the type of grass you have. I have Bermuda so there is no need to seed. It spreads naturally or you can buy some pieces of sod and place small pieces in bare areas. Spread some sand around it, keep it watered, and within a few months it will fill in. Yes, post aeration is a great time to apply weed preventer and/or fertilizer.
so when you saw mulch up with mower, you grind it up the cores in the mower bag and spread it back out in lawn? i have a very clayey lawn and bad erosion at the moment. would you think its ok to do this to my lawn as well or should i use some other kind of organic matter? thank you from dallas, texas!
So can you do this in the fall as well? Down in Texas it is way too dry until about October. My lawn is Bermuda but kind of thin. Hoping to thicken it up some and promote more health.
I do have a lot of sweat equity in my lawn. It was a mess when I purchased the home. It takes me about an hour each time I mow if I also edge the curbs and blow it all off.
But do you really need to aerate, and every year? I've seen it all too often, especially when someone owns the equipment. "I gotta use it every year, and do the entire yard" without ever really considering if it's necessary. General rule, if after a good rain you can stick a short knife blade into the ground using just your thumb, then the soil is good. When you have wet areas where the plugs are deformed because of how loose the soil is, that tells you the soil isn't compacted. The reason for aerating is to disrupt compact soil. Your whole lawn may not need it, but maybe some parts do. Try a year where you aerate sections and not others of the same types of soil. Do half the yard by the road and not the other, do some wetter spots and not others, etc. Take notes over the season and look at it over the whole season, including how the lawn looks after the aeration with all the plugs and holes all over. At a minimum, you'll know where to spend your time and where not to.

when it comes to lawn care, I'm best at aeration. Love doing it, just needed to know when to apply it for my cutsomers.
Your the best but don't know when to do it lmao

Kentucky we do it in late August to September
Do you have fescue/bluegrass?
Looks great. I'm scared to do it due to irrigation system.
Turn it on, mark the location of each head, and then just drive around them. You can do this!
Can aerating a lawn in the spring and in the fall good or once good enough
Do you put grass seed down then ?
Do u put grabgrass weed killer down?

Thank you for that information. Fast response. I never knew that about Bermuda spreads out . Great job.
The John Deere pull behind aerator is 499 with 48 spikes. Isn’t more tines per foot worth the additional cost?
I guess that depends on your goal. You can make more passes with this one for a lot less money.

You could fill with sand or you can find a local place that sells high quality top dressing.
@@TightWadDIY I have a leaf bed I've been composting to soil, do you think that would be sufficient? Thank you!
@@samuraioodon That should work. You could also just leave it as is.
@@TightWadDIY oh the leaves are broken down pretty much. I'm going to be aerating then reseeding once the rain has stopped. Thanks have a great day!
@@samuraioodon I mean you don’t have to top dress with anything. You could just aerate, overseed, fertilize, and water.
You don't mention where you live. Here in Wisconsin they recommend not doing it until September or early October.
Is it too late to aerate AFTER I've seeded and fertilized?
It’s not ideal. I wouldn’t disturb the seeds.
@@TightWadDIY That's what I thought. Guess I'll have to wait until Fall. Thanks
@@MrShabindigo You could aerate in a month once the seed has rooted.
@@TightWadDIY Maybe I'll do that. Thanks!

Brian Dostie it’s more beneficial in the spring.
My guy charges $50. Smaller area but he's fair. I can rent the machine for $40. So he does the work and I don't have to deal with the rental.
If I could get it done for $50 I’d pay for the service too!
Is April to late to aerate
Not at all. With Bermuda, you can really aerate anytime the ground is soft enough.
I got dizzy watching this ..
Sorry about that. Hopefully you were still able to get valuable info from it.
How huge lawn you have. You must spend more money and time on it.

Imagine making money by talking and recording yourself aerating
You should totally do it! Let me know how it goes.
