Making a Serving Tray from an Old Whiskey Barrel | DIY Woodworking Gift Idea

- I made a whiskey serving tray out of the head of a whiskey barrel. I thought making a whiskey tray would be a fun project idea, but I needed to way to give it the character it deserved. I decided to find parts of a whiskey barrel that I could use to make it. I came across heads or lids from barrels used to distill whiskey. I picked one up not knowing what the barrel would look like. I was really happy with the one I got. It has some amazing character and a stamp for Old Fitzgerald Bourbon Whiskey.
I wanted to keep as much character from the barrel as possible knowing that it would give my serving tray the unique look I was going after. Picking the right materials is key for woodworking projects, and this project was no exception. I chose some walnut to complement the white oak from the barrel. I thought using more oak drown out the wow factor of the barrel. I decided to use sapwood from the walnut pieces I had so it was a closer color match to the barrel.
If you aren’t aware, barrel heads are not a solid piece of wood. They are multiple strips held together with dowels. I pried the apart and glued together the pieces I wanted to keep. I was going to cut the pieces off on the ends, giving me clean lines, but I liked the oval profile too much so I kept it and used it as a design feature for the tray. I had the walnut sides of the tray flow up and around the ends. This made the handles integrate into the sides. Plus, the serving tray handles are curved, mimicking the barrel edge profile.
I went with a simple wax finish on this one. You can also use a spray finish like lacquer. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the results. I think it would be fun to get another barrel head and try a completely different look since there are so many possibilities with a woodworking project like this.

You could've used the leftover boards from the barrel head, to make the handles... But it turned out amazing this way!

Really neat idea. I’ve made a few projects with both bourbon and wine barrels and have used many coats of spray lacquer to seal the char and also the wine finish. For the char, I lightly sanded and vacuumed the surface well to remove the loose/ soft stuff. Worked well and kept the character of the barrel in the project.
There are definitely ways to keep it as rough as possible. Depends on what someone is willing to compromise and the condition of the barrel.

This was lovely! I, sadly, don't do wood working, but happened upon this while looking for something to do with bourbon barrel lids and staves. Had to check the product link. I'm in Kentucky... 40 minutes from Bardstown. You can get lids for $10 and staves for $2-5 each. Place was stacked floor to celing!

Lmao! " i think a spray finsih is a really smart move so i`m gonna with a hard wax finish by hand" ! Looks really good. I might of take a wire brush to the underside to clean off some of that char, a light sanding with 220 and then sealed it in with poly but that`s just me. No arguing that you ended up with a nice finished product my friend. Thanks for another great video

They are really easy to find. The cost varies depending on how far away it is, but they certainly are not rare in the United States.
@@NewtonMakes awesome surprisingly enough they are tricky get hold decent ones here usally there bit worn and done and they can cost. Ave seen half decent barrels before costing £200-300 so that'd be like $400-500 dollars a barrell nuts! Can a ask your opinion on a plainer thicknesser combo for setting up woodworker on a budget? 🏴👍
Surprised that the head stayed together, maybe they glued it after the fact? I thought the heads (and staves) we're all held in by friction, the bands holding them. Why it is such a craft to make the barrels as they have to be watertight with no glue. (As it would affect taste of whatever spirit is aging in them.)
*Edit: when will I learn to watch entire video before commenting? Ugh... You showed they were held together with dowels.

I'm glad it was held with just dowels because it would have been maddening to try to cut a rectangle from a 22" diameter circle.
Nicely done! I have to ask, though - did you test this process off-camera before filming this? I find myself scrapping a lot of camera footage filming my first attempts at new projects and curious if you have the same experience.

I thought it would be too much barrel. A lot of barrel on barrel action! I saved those for a possible coaster project in the future.
