I've been a fan of Star Wars for 23 years, and my favorite character is Luke Skywalker. This movie made Luke an angry coward, that's a total 360 of the character. Plus making him contemplate premeditated murder on his nephew is so off character.

Yup! Future generations including my kids will now know that Luke Skywalker (my favorite OT character) was an attempted child murderer! Thanks Disney! I'm done with SW, no way I'm going to spend my money to watch the stupis Han Solo movie.

Normally Star Wars turns me into a little kid, but this is the only Star Wars movie that I watched and left the movie theater angry after watching it. This movie broke my heart, not b/c of Luke's horrible character in the movie, but b/c of how poorly written it was. I call it poorly written b/c of the numerous subplots that were dropped from the Force Awakens.

    • @Comand94
      @Comand94 6 років тому

We should also point out that the movie takes place:
-in empty space for 75% of the movie
      -one cool island
-on a planet that screams Disney
      -on Snoke's ship
      -on Crait
Space is fine as long as it's short and dynamic, it was just lame space chase though. Achto (or however it's spellt) was fine but ultimately not used very much at all for other things than gags. Rey had no training and the vision with the mirrors could've been cool if they didn't destroy the idea of Rey having some kind of force sensitive parents. Canto Bight was crap. Snoke's ship was cool but very brief. Crait looked awesome but what happened on it was a dissapointment. So basically, a Star Wars movie where the characters spend 75% of the time in space, full of gags, plotholes and weird, unrealistic directions for the characters.

    • @MrSuperalan99

    • @gearzofwar123
      @gearzofwar123 6 років тому +7

Azurealms99 That's not hope you clown, that's NOTHING. You're reading into something that has been outlined since day one in Star Wars, the Jedi and Sith used to go looking for force sensitive children all the time on planets in the outer rim and core worlds, and most children are born force sensitive from beings who aren't, seeing as Jedi and Sith almost NEVER have children outside of a few cases like Anakin and Mundi and Vos and Marek. To sit here and say that's a sign of hope is just a common occurrence that all real Star Wars fans are fully aware of is beyond stupid. It doesn't signify hope. Luke was hope. Luke was the hope the galaxy NEEDED. And Disney ruined it.

Mark wieden I just feel the direction that Ryan Johnson took with this film was just the completely wrong direction as compared to what JJ Abrams had envisioned and already established. So at this point I feel like the answers that we got for some of our questions from the force awakens fell extremely flat while at the same time closing many doors regarding where they could take the Story for episode 9. So I feel like now we're kind of at a dead end and I honestly do not know how they could build hype for episode 9 based on where the story ended.

    • @MrInfinity418

I agree. What is finns purpose now? If he had sacrificed himself for the resistance it would have made sense. I don't understand why Vader was redeemable but a young ben solo who hadn't really done anything yet wasn't in Luke's eyes. N the Finn rose casino stuff just killed the mood everytime they cut to it.

  • @mariolegend
    @mariolegend 6 років тому +4

    Damn.
Now hearing your perspective gives me much more understanding on why folks hate the film. I went in with LOW expectations - to the point where I just didn't care anymore about Star Wars stuff because in the force awakens I already had a feeling that things were going to get really twisted since Han Solo got killed. Yeah I'm one of the viewers that really hated Han's death scene. That Killed it for me, so when viewing this one I just had no expectations at all and really enjoyed it because I didn't care so much about it. The only thing that had me tear up was exactly how you described Princess Leia force scene - THAT was a twist in a half. I was actually anticipating her death but it didn't happen, even though at the end when she saw Luke she mentioned it's the end, again with the meta. I completely didn't even notice the meta messages at all and I usually do catch that, but this time I just didn't care lol. It must have been because my mental state and focus was more on Carry Fisher, and feeling emotional that she passed away last year that this film was just a tearjerker for me because it is the LAST TIME both Hamill & Carrie will be together again. The whole Obi-wan hint in the confrontation with Kylo was an obvious one but also I did feel kinda cheated once after I thought over the whole Professor X projection event that luke did was the case. What I really wanted to see was Luke go nuts in a Force Fiesta fireworks against the AT-STs just to show how truly badass he is, but nope. Instead though that projection really cost him his life and felt like he plugged into the matrix lol and was just too confusing emotionally to accept that he "passed away" like that BUT I still enjoyed it as is. It's just too bad that this shit is what it is. I'm much more casual now with this stuff and not really so into it to even care to read the novels since Disney void the extended universe. Since you put it real clear here, it doesn't even matter anymore now - which is really sad for anything that has to do with Star Wars.
Side note: That's why I told my buddy after I watched the film was that it is simply a very depressing trilogy. So the next one up will give you the death of Leia in CG, with a romantic ending with Kylo and Rey LOL xD OR!!! Leia's death is described in the intro text and we just get a Star Wars film that nobody cares anymore.

But there are a lot of elements that I hated, almost to the point that I feel like I have to watch TPM and AOTC to wash it out. As people were leaving the theater, a couple of folks said, "Man that was good!" However, the majority of people leaving all had the same expression on their face, Lips puckered out and eyebrows scrunched with a dead silence following them out of the room.

I am very curious to know what JJ Abrams feels about episode 8 and going forward with episode 9. Essentially Johnson took the foundation of the sequel trilogy that JJ had created and essentially turned it into something that it was never intended to be and made it worse. And it's pretty sad that the man that kicked off his whole new sequel Trilogy story is giving the reins to finish what he started (no pun intended) but with his original ideas completely thrown out the window. I couldn't agree more with keep them in his previous video review of the film that I felt this is very disrespectful of Disney. They let JJ create the story and create the franchise then they give too much creative control to Ryan Johnson and not only did he just change the outcome of the film that was probably different from JJ's vision of it but he closed who many doors with this direction. So essentially JJ Abrams is left in a very difficult spot to create episode 9. Cuz he's going to be now the one that's going to have to try and win back all of the true hardcore fans and try and rebuild that hype and anticipation for the next film. And at this point based on what Ryan Johnson did in this fill in this stupid ass decision that he's made, it has left JJ at with very limited options to go with story going forward. Sure they could always do something like the fact that the way he did with has caused episode 9 shock value and hype for that movie to completely go down the toilet.

I watched the movie twice, and still really dislike the movie, even more, the second time around, because the mistakes and missteps became really obvious! I wanted to like this movie so badly, I was praying that the second time I saw it I would fall in love with it, but the movie has severe flaws.
Unfortunately, the movie had inconsistencies like Rey and Kylo not using the Force against the pretorian guards. All the OT characters were slandered to make Kylo more sympathetic. I can agree with Han and Leia being terrible parents but Luke becoming an attempted child murderer, is ridiculous. This is the same Luke that wanted to save a mass murder/ monster like Darth Vader. He would have never tried to kill an innocent kid who had done nothing wrong just because he sensed darkness, this is just poor screenplay. Plus the excess/ useless/ cringeworthy humor and Leia superman scene made it feel like a Marvel movie not SW. I absolutely loved Poe and Finn from TFA (they are actually my favorite characters in this trilogy) but I felt the Canto Bight story could have been done so much better, and not dragged the way it was. The way they hyped up Phasma, was completely unwarranted, because they could have explored the character more, and again dropped the ball. Poe being reckless and getting away with so many resistance members' deaths with just a slap and demotion, was a light punishment, and then he leads mutiny, which is completely forgiven by the end of the movie. There are so many more things that were mishandled or wrong that I could mention but it would take up too much time. Thank god JJ is directing the next movie!

At this point I feel like no one will be happy with any new star wars movie. If there is any flaws, the blame will be pointed to Disney. If they try to make it similar to the originals, it will be blamed for being a copy. If they try to change things up, the fan boys will think the movie is disrespecting what Star Wars is. In a way I feel lucky that I didn't watch Star Wars for the first time till recently, I feel like it's the nostalgia that makes some Star Wars fans want future movies a certain way and that way only. But o well, everyone has their own opinions. Although I found this movie to be a bit underwhelming at times and I was angry at Phasma getting thrown away like nothing, overall I really enjoyed it and I loved how unpredictable it was.

If you're wanting to see some overly used deus ex machina, cheesy plot points, and director/writer decisions that will crap all over your childhood, then this is your movie! Oh, almost forgot, Princess Leia can not only survive the vacuum of space, but she can fly now. This film is absolute trash. Do not see it. The "critics" are full of it and probably bought off by Disney.

I'm a star wars fan that is easy to please. I watched the original trilogy first and I loved it. It made a fictional galaxy on the brink of civil war, and gave us interesting and beloved characters with relationships that started off poor but grew better as they continued on their paths. We had the hero luke, the comedic duo han and chewie, the strong leiah, and the intimidating darth Vader and his sorta side kick the badass boba fett. It started good and ended good. I loved the prequels as well. The world building was phenomenal and the characters were interesting, mainly the villains like maul and grievous. The story was great and the battle scenes even though the acting was wonky and some cgi was overdone. It explained the Senate, showed us different alien species and culture, and gave us the origins of different OT ideas. They expanded the lore so much and made star wars even more of a dream come true. This new trilogy however, is piss poor. Episode 7 was a fanboy's paradise and was a nostalgia film. It was scene by scene a reskin of episode 4 and it handled it's characters inconsistently as well as throwing in the usual Disney forced comedy that I hate. This one is an abomination. They ruined luke, made rey and even bigger Mary sue, reskined old imperial walkers to look new, killed off everyone before they could contribute to the plot and shoved it down our throats that kylo and rey are love and life. I hated this movie and the last so much mostly because it was unoriginal and uncreative. They are lazy in storytelling and this turns it off for me. At least the prequels were original and fun. They contributed something. I'm done with star wars

If they even think of doing this to the old republic era, I'm going to be furious beyond belief. Good thing they are trying to stay away from any form of prequel and are only focusing on the original trilogy. This however still sucks for obvious reasons.

PLEASE I INVITE ALL TO READ THIS LONG COMMENT AS IT IS MY VERSION OF HOW THE ENDING SHOULD HAVE WENT. Thank you. I can't agree with you more Geekdom. This is exactly how I felt man. Leaving a Star Wars movie with an empty distraught feeling, disappointment. The worst feeling ever. I've never felt that before until seeing this movie. I cannot believe they wasted Luke Skywalker at the end of the movie he could have done some amazing things that we've never seen anyone do before. For instance my ending, Luke shows up in the flesh, he immediately shows his immense power in the Force by throwing the Walkers around, crushing them in the air. As Kylo approaches, he pulls out his Green Lightsaber to face him. Besting him in combat (after about 3 minutes of fighting) taking a limb, an entire leg. They have a Force off. But instead of Force Pushing each other until they both blow back, Luke immediately uses Force Lightning and starts frying Kylo Ren, as Hux calls in the final few ships they have to bombard them both and what's left of the Resistance, Luke looks at Leia, Chewbacca, Rey and the few Rebels left. Deciding not to kill Kylo, Luke says to Kylo "you still have a lot to learn kid". They all escape in the Falcon leaving Kylo beaten, broken, distraught. One of the final scenes is Luke handing Rey a bag, she empties the contents out onto a table to see the components to build a new lightsaber. Luke says something witty "THIS is your final test, but we may have to make a special pit stop for you to complete it and pass" (obviously referring to gathering a kyber crystal). She gives him a snarky look. She says back to her "what do you think they come off an assembly line somewhere?!!" They both Smile as she starts tinkering Luke and braces Leia and Chewbacca, finally meeting the others. Then instead of ending with the heroes, The last scene has Hux with Kylo Ren being taken to a medical station to receive a cybernetic leg. Hux says that he has a hologram call, Kylo says that he does not care who it is. We see Hux smile and smirk as he puts the call through anyway. A huge hologram of Snoke appears in front of Kylo Ren, he's completely intact, not a scratch. Kylo is immediately very shocked and overwhelmed, completely scared, medical equipment starts to shake and rattle as Snoke says "your training is complete, but remember we are not Sith. The Apprentice does not kill The Master..." Kylo has a look of fear, anger, terror, and confusion. (Implying that Snoke had/has clones or that he's able to jump to a different body, meaning he was never there in the first place, not the real Snoke) that's the finale/ending that I wish we got!!! The little boy using the Force, seeing the Rebel insignia, the whole Disney moment, could have been shown when we originally see him during the Finn and Rose escapade...

THAT bugged me because at first I actually believed that Luke was there and actually doing OP Grandmaster Luke shit shrugging off being actually hit with dozens of laser blasts, taking a lightsaber to the chest like a boss, etc. i thought he actually had these ridiculous OP powers and here it was just him meditating back on the hidden planet and projecting a hologram. I haven’t read any EU material but I HAVE read ABOUT “Grand Master” Luke and at his peak he was ridiculously god-like. Thought they were doing that here but it felt like a bait ‘n switch.

Maybe Disney bought off the critics to say great things about the Movie so more people will come see it, that way they can make a Fortune off this awful movie. They can then say "oh the movie must have been great because we made a lot of money, so lets keep going". Just like what Mark Hamill has been trying to worn us about. In this way Disney has now separated the greatest movie fan base easily. Their making us fight one another! Instead of facing the real problem, that Mouse! "were they going to bust out the Hutts or something" FUCKIN AWESOME and you had it right when you said the fight with the Praetorian Guards you said Luke but you meant to say Kylo, yeah it should have been Luke in a bunch of badass lightsaber scenes or at least a few, I mean shit where was this lightsaber battle between him and the Knights of Ren where he demolishes them using the Force and his Green Lightsaber. While Rey fights Kylo all on Ach'to. Making Star Wars pretty much reassured us this fight was filmed in Ireland. There were multiple local Witnesses and I've heard that they're at a loss for words because some of the people from Making Star Wars were there to witness this scene being filmed. Using extensive wire work, all outside on Skellig Michael Island, with Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, and multiple black masked, black uniformed adversaries with melee weapons attacking Mark Hamill... Getting tossed to the side, thrown in the air, sliced in half etc etc etc. I mean was that filmed and just thrown out completely?!! I know Rian Johnson said we're getting multiple lengthy deleted scenes on the Blu-ray. It's confirmed. I highly doubt that's one of them cuz it just wouldn't fit into the story, but where the hell was it!?! Is that something else that they just retconned even though they brushed upon the Knights of Ren possibly being some of the Jedi students that left with Kylo Ren. If it was filmed and then scrapped it's just another missed and wasted opportunity. Thrown out the Fuckin door, like so many other things in this movie.

My perspective on Luke is that he was a glimmer of hope, before he knew the Jedi’s ideals were a large part in the creation of vador and empire. Plus he only thought of killing Kylo because he felt snokes corruption during Kylo’s training but his compassion stopped him to late. Also snoke could still be alive if he was just a dark side entity jumping from host to host.

    2. They had Rey use the force in the end to move the rocks because it's about HER advancement of her powers and seeing her utilize it so well, not Leia.
    3. I think the progression of the lore makes sense, a meta narrative is a stretch at best.
    4. To complain about phasma and to love Boba Fett is hypocritical.
    5. The idea of the force belonging to the universe is a perfect narrative, it's reminiscent of what chi is, which is something I figured you of all people would appreciate.
    6. The Asian character did suck, I'll agree with you there.
    7. Yoda using the force to strike lightening is strange but there's no reason why the usage of the force can't grow and evolve over time. I mean force ghosts didn't even exist until Qui-gon. Why can't yoda utilize and advance force usage even after death?
    8. After the ending with both sides being criopled can set up a truly desperate struggle as both sides struggle to finish the other side off.
    9. Ah Luke. The ultimate poor argument against this film. Firstly, Luke is more than capable of doing what he did, he always had a struggle between light and dark, and if you're an EU guy, Luke actually turned to the dark side there. Also a whole lot of time that passed between Jedi and now, and a character can change over years, Luke isn't Superman, he's a flawed human. This messiah worship of Luke is silly and detrimental. The Force projection of Luke was a brilliant move and set up perfectly. I think Luke flying in and saving the day Han Solo on the Falcon style would've been the ultimate cheese.
I understand this is your view and how you feel is how you feel, but these criticisms that you and many other people are sharing are just a bit whiny and nitpicky. Is the movie perfect? No not at all. But this whole narrative of it being a horrible disaster of a film just makes everyone sound like a bunch of crying children.

TheWickerman12 Have you read the books of star wars, the fact they were retconned as nothing and this movie kinda pissed on anything that was Star Wars. Luke joined both sides and saw both sides. The fact he takes after yoda and qui gon felt out of place.

They’re ruining this franchise for me. Now don’t get me wrong, Star Wars is my favorite universe to date and probably always will be, but these films were a fucking mistake. What the actual fuck were they thinking when they directed this damn movie? Has Rian Johnson never seen a Star Wars movie? One thing i noticed in the film that no one seems to be pointing out, is that the fucking general with the purple hair (idc to remember her name) fucking referred to god while the resistance was fleeing the heavy cruiser. I only saw the film once so don’t quote me on her exact words, but I remember her saying “by god”, and then something wishing for their safety before she killed herself. This was fucking acting that should have never even been placed in a Star Wars film. There’s no fucking god in starwars. It’s the force. Not god. They don’t believe in an all powerful god. That’s not starwars. I was expecting this movie to be dark as shit, explaining the Jedi’s mistakes, diving deeper into snokes past, and more cameos to Vader and palpatine. I wanted to learn more ab the nights of ren. Evidence earlier in the year pointed towards Kylo traveling to Vader’s castle with the knights of ren, observing his nature and learning more about what made Vader so powerful. And nothing. None of that shit. They never even talked ab the knights of ren. They had so many fucking opportunities in this movie that they never took advantage of and I hated it. Fuck Disney.

The mentor usually has to die in a classic myth. Kenobi dies, Yoda dies, Dumbledore dies. Luke dying is really same old same old and let’s the hero be the hero without help. Classic myth structure.

I Enjoy your content Geekdom keep up the good work...I am on the side of those who hates this movie. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from liking the movie but I can NOT stand this new Disney Star Wars millennial edition...too much rage to even properly articulate my thoughts on the nonsense..I'm 42 years old and I've loved Star Wars and Loved Luke Skywalker since 1980. I fucking Hated the end of this movie. Since 1983 I have waited for Luke to fully go "super saiyan" and all I got was some weak ass send off so that we can just focus on Disney's new characters Rey and co. Where the Hell was the power Luke has in EU. This ending for Luke should have happened 2 or 3 movies from now...

I agree with a lot of your points, dude. I finally broke down and went to see this movie over the weekend and I was completely underwhelmed by pretty much 95% of it. Every time it seemed like something awesome was going to happen, they completely dropped the ball. I probably won't waste my time going to see Episode 9 because I don't see how they could possibly do a course correction this late in the game.

I really hated the last scene and thought it was stupid, but after thinking about it for a while it seems to make a bit of sense. If you are in space you won't immediately die that's true. Lastly you brought up the rocks being moved, and I would combat that by saying Leia really didn't need much force to pull herself back in the ship because she was in space. The amount of force needed to get her in the ship would be next to nothing because she's weightless in space.

You’re right, it does seem like they reacted to the fans. For two years we’ve been hearing “ who is Rey’s parents?” They probably could not back it up so they just probably threw in kylo having a vision of Rey’s past saying “they sold you off for drinking money”
I think jj Abrams should have directed the last Jedi and start where he left off.

Kylo killing Snoke was parallel to Vader killing the Emperor. That’s the comparison to make, not with Luke. Rey is the old Luke. She refuses to turn. “I’ll never join you!”

What took me out of that fight scene with the royal guard was how well Rey did against them. She has no formal fight training, the scene where Luke sees Rey practicing with the lightsaber but anyone woo fights knows practicing techniques and actually applying those in an actual fight especially in a life/ death situation is a different thing. I liked TFA better.

Hey, I’m a teenager and I grew up with the Clone Wars and the TV show. I love this movie for the characters and action. The best part of the movie is Kylo and Reys relationship and fight scene. I do understand some of the anger about the movie. With all it’s twist and turns. But I have trust in Disney to make ep 9 good and make a end to this trilogy that justifies these decisions.

I agree with you 100%. I was so exited for this movie and I left in sheer disbelief. The tone of the film was wrong, Disney have tried to give it a guardians of the Galaxy feel. They butchered characters and people are lapping it up saying it’s the better than Empire!

Geekdom I think you should watch it again. I think everyone should, and pay attention with an unbiased opinion. It’s really easy to get frustrated with this film, but what I did, and what I think could be helpful for a lot of people, is to watch it again and try to enjoy it for the sake of enjoying that it is a movie. It helped me like the movie much more.

The 3 things I can think of that I didn't like was to much comedy throughout the 1st half, not enough screen time for Rey and Luke, and no explanation about who snoke is.
Rey was using the force in this movie like she was master throughout the whole thing, but she was no match for snokes powers. I liked that whole throne room part

  • @Briansgate

8:00 I have a credible theory for that. Leia cant move the rocks because she isnt that trained and strong in the force, requires concentration and effort and such. Her surviving space was a Life or Death, fight or flight survival mechanism. Plenty of cases recorded in the real world about people getting such adrenaline rushes allowing them to do things that they couldnt normally do. That, on top of the fact that it is also the Force taking care of her. Again, more survival reflexes than a show of power.
And if that doesnt work for you, well, ok, but it's how I let myself sleep at night over it.
