  • This question was asked to Grandmaster Hélio by Professor Pedro Valente when he visited the Miami Jiu-jitsu Academy. He replied that originally, the Gracie Academy did not use belt colors to denote fighting ability. Different colored belts were only used to differentiate students from instructors. Black belts were avoided because this was what Judo instructors wore. The Gracies regarded Judo as a restrictive sport, instead of a comprehensive fighting system. Back then, instructors in the Gracie Academy wore light blue belts, and head instructors wore belts that were dark blue. Head instructors had to complete a special course, taught by the Grandmaster personally.

Because it was his favourite colour, and it was his school, so he could do what he wanted.

Also, when they started out, they thought the term 'master' was ridiculous. Fast forward a few decades and now we have grandmasters. Soon there will be infinity masters.

It’s crazy how sport BJJ simultaneously watered down BJJ (or GJJ) while also driving innovation in techniques and style.

Makes sense because Maeda never gave the 1st rank (shodan) to carlos gracie nor to pire dos reis or george, only to jacyntho ferro who was their instructor in belem. So they could not use a maeda jiu jitsu black belt neither a judo black belt. Maeda was more into wrestling and prize fighting, and lately when he made peace with jigoro kano focused only on kano judo. I always felt like carlos was trying to learn but all his masters went away travelling or died, in 1929 ferro died so when he opened the pire dos reis academy they hired geo omori as teacher for a short time, pire was the head of the academy george and carlos the instructors but pire was always away as he was a tax collector and self defence instructor of police forces across the country.

Let’s not forget the context to this statement as this fight :
      1) Kimura made Helio fight his #1 student and desciple in order to “prove” he was good enough to face the best Judo warrior Japan has ever produced.
      2) Helio used his favorite “strangle”= the X strangle from the guard to render his opponent unconscious.
      3) Kimura was a young Heavyweight: who stated if Helio could last a minute he should consider himself the victor. Helio lasted many minutes (but succumbed to the now infamous KIMURA LOCK) Noting here not due to a tap but from his older brother throwing the towel.
Helio was invited (the only non-Japanese) to be invited to teach at the Kodokan. (Think about that for a second). Think about the state of Japanese “judo” would be in today if Helio went to Japan and implemented HIS TEACHING TECHNIQUES (from which I believe are the foundation of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Their select teaching style is so effective and radical that the older heads in Japan wouldn’t have sat well. I firmly believe Helio Gracie’s teaching style is what SEPARATES JIU JITSU FROM JUDO!!

1st. No he didn't a newspaper invited the japanese to compete with helio. The first match between helio and yukio or the #1 student as you like to call it led to a draw, in the rematch helio won. After words the other judoka wanted to challenge but kimura took his place.
2nd. The weight difference between helio and kimura was 20 pounds. Even if kimura was a heavyweight why would that matter don't bjj people always say a smaller person can beat a stronger bigger person. Except this time right.
3rd. There's no proof kimura said helio should be declared the winner within 3min(citation needed). If you read the helio biography he clearly states he was bested and had his arm broken therefore could not continue and was forfeited. You also need a citation for helio being invited to teach at the kodokan because kimura never said that.
4th bjj is nothing more but kosen judo (which emphasise ground fighting) with different rules.
Think about that for a second.
P.s. you may wanna see the yoshida vs gracie match. Maybe it'll knock some sense into you

In an art where effectiveness is more important than pure memorisation of syllabus, belts aren't really needed even. You don't have them in Boxing unless you hold a proper title, so it would make modern Jiujitsu easier to manage if belts weren't even a thing anymore. Just make it like MMA, just practice it, no need for belt rankings.
