What Does It Mean to Be a BJJ Black Belt ?

- Yesterday I had the pleasure of promoting my good friend Adam to Black Belt in BJJ.
As a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach, I desperately hope I’m not only helping make my students better at BJJ. But I also hope that I’m making a positive impact on their life in some way outside of the gym.
Everyone has their mission and that’s mine.
When Adam gave his Black Belt speech about what it means to be a BJJ Black Belt at least to him, I was moved. Because of the way he felt for me and all of the other people on the team.
You'll see it on my face, I became watery eyed.
For me, that lets me now I’m on the right track.
In regards to Adam himself. There is so much I could say about him.
In fact, it’s difficult to condense your feelings and memories down to a simple post.
So I won’t try today.
Instead, I’ll just say that I’m proud of Adam, and I am so very thankful that he found his way to our gym 9 years ago.
He’s been one of my best training partners, someone I look forward to seeing on a regular basis and we’ve had some fun times together.
Congratulations to Adam! I’m proud of him. As a coach, brother in arms and friend.

Chewy, I don't know if all instructor do what you do in terms of wearing a black belt and than giving that belt to your student when they are promoted to that level, but that is simply one of the coolest things I ever seen.
Facts
I've seen one video where the instructor took a belt that had came off and snuck the new one on the mat. The way chewy did it is pretty amazing too.

JJ Machado gave his belt to Eddie Bravo which he passed on to Tony Ferguson that’s very cool .
This sense of camaraderie is part of what I love about the bjj community

It probably wasn't his own belt. It seems brand new. If you see the one he wears afterwards it is worn out, so this one is his probably. I guess he bought a new one to wear that day and give to him so that he will surprise him, pretty cool!

Getting a black belt is one of the most euphoric feelings humanly possible, when I was 11 I got mine in karate and had started age 5 I still remember the moment to this day
Congratulations Adam👍I know that feeling your talking about. You will always be a constant reflection of your teammates and students,as you are that mirror image when standing across from then at the beginning and end of every class. I don't think that feeling will ever go away,deep stuff. Oh and the compilation at the end was great

Chewy, this was amazing. One thing I've noticed in all your group videos is how happy and together you and your students are. And all this without a uniform or framed pictures on the wall or any other mcdojo stuff. Yours should be the template for bjj gyms man, you absolutely do it the right way
I care about these people and their progress. They know it. I've dedicated my life to serving the people that come in and they know it. Don't need uniform restrictions or tons of rules to make that happen.
@@Chewjitsu thanks for replying. What you've said stands out a mile mate, good on you and good on your students for playing their part as well. I train with Alliance and unfortunately they're now pushing their uniform (no patches, embroidered purchased through formal channels) amongst other things. My instructor hates it I think, but it's one of the prices they pay for association. Sad, I think. I started training 20 years ago, and the whole ethos of bjj and mma was being free, being informal, but being respectful as a given

I'm a Karate Black Belt. Unfortunately I never had such beautiful moments in my Martial art journey. I love my Martial art. But there was never this kinda family feeling in my Dojo.
There's a BJJ dojo in my city. But he too is so insecure he kept making fun of other Martial arts including Karate and me. So I moved out of that Dojo.
I wish I too had a Dojo and a coach like chewy who treats me as a family.
Right now I'm running a karate Dojo. Many children find home at the Dojo. Many children found a family in the Dojo. I'm just trying to give my students what I never got as a student.
Thats what we need in the karate community.

prajwal karate dojo it’s because they are learning a true martial art and it’s also a very intimate art, but most of all it takes years usually at LEAST a decade and that’s if you are super dedicated to going more than 3 times a week, you can get a black belt in a few years in karate and children can get them, jiu jitsu is so deep and complex it’s impossible for a child to get a black belt no matter is they started training when they started walking
It must be the greatest feeling as a coach to do that!
