  • The current generation of NVIDIA Shield TV is still REALLY good, especially given how old it is. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's what you should spend your money on. How does it compare to more recent devices like Chromecast with Google TV and is it still one of the best streaming devices you can buy?

    Audio, audio, audio... THAT is the reason to buy the Shield TV. That's why I'm praying they keep making them or hopefully refresh the line. If other device manufacturers would allow you to use the different audio formats, even if I had to buy a license for those formats, I would consider buying another player. Until then it's Shield TV and only Shield TV for my home theater.

    The Shield is one of the most perfect products I have ever purchased. I use it 95% as a Plex streamer and very rarely to watch HBO Max. Used to stream Netflix, but I cancelled it. You definitely get what you pay for. Chromecast might be 3x-4x cheaper but it has bad UI lag, and it takes 3x-4x longer to fast forward through a beefy 4k video streamed locally through Plex. You can feel the wimpy hardware at every step. And why hog the WiFi trying to stream 4k to a device that is essentially static? A reliable home setup has everything static connected via a LAN port, which the Chromecast hasn't. The Chromecast remote is awfully bottom rounded, as if it was actually designed to be slippery. I dropped it like every day from the couch and it always goes with a loud, heart wrenching bang. Overall the Chromecast is a Lite device with wimpy hardware, it lacks essential ports and it only leaves you wanting a better home streaming experience. It is better suited to enable smart functionality to an old, secondary TV that is approaching end of life. I wish I would have bought the nVidia TV Shield Pro from the get go.

    The Shield TV Pro also has Ethernet, so you're not overloading your WiFi like other devices tend to. Running two 4K streams to two devices can eat up a significant amount of your WiFi bandwidth, and I'd argue it's definitely cheaper if you have Ethernet available to get several Shield TV Pros than to upgrade your WiFi sufficiently to handle full WiFi based streaming.
    And it's still the only device that supports a full BD Bitstream, so if you have Plex/Emby/Jellyfin and high quality media with Dolby Atmos or DTS HD or the like, it will just play it, while every other device needs it transcoded at the server, increasing cost there. The one feature I wish it had that makes the Roku Ultra better as a pure streaming services device is AV1 support, and hopefully a refresh in the next year or two will add AV1 and HDMI 2.1 for 8K or 4K 120 Hz.

    How does the shield compared to a flagship TV integrated processor, something like an LG G2 or a Sony a95k?

    • @howardlittell
      @howardlittell Рік тому +2

      I have a 77 inch G2, a full surround system with AVR connected eARC etc. I use Plex via my computer to watch full bit rate UHD 4k Blu ray Dolby Vision/ Dolby Atoms torrents I've downloaded. Some are 70 gig each and more. Anyway, with my LG G2, everything reverts downward to HDR not Dolby Vision. Also, the sound is sub par via the G2 processor . Any movie close to 100 mb in data won't even play because the LG A9 processor taps out at 100 mb in data size. Full, non compressed movies are larger than that. The Shield taps out at about 1,000 mb or 1 gig. So, for regular streaming (compressed Hulu, Netfilix, Amazon, UA-cam, etc) the LG integrated processor is fine. However, if you have your own flicks and use Plex, the Shield is a must have for the best content period. There is no way around it currently.

      The chip inside Tegra is old, developed before 2015 when HDR and 4K just hit mainstream. UA-cam in HDR requires VP9 profile 2 support and shield hardware doesn’t support it unfortunately. Nvidia never made an updated Tegra chip to add hardware support.

I simply told you why it doesn’t have it and that’s it. You vote with your wallet, make compromises and you get the device that caters to your needs. There is no single ultimate device that is supposed to hold up the test of time as standards, codecs and technology changes over time. Nvidia shield held up for 7+ years with feature set that no other boxes came close to this day and it’s just missing one stupid feature from one stupid app. Boo f’n hoo. In my research and seeing ALL major streaming devices at work, first hand, I picked up the Shield Pro to see what the hype (2weeks ago) was all about. Needless to say, I was blown away by how zippy this device is and the quality of picture and sound. I always look to get the most bang for my buck, when choosing a new product; and yes, there's always a give and take, which than goes to one's "personal preference."
    Now, here's my gripe with the Shield TV: it's actually nothing against them, but rather, Android/Google TV App Store. Like all, Apple, Fire TV and even Roku, they all have a give and take within their given ecosystem via their App Store. I actually lost streaming apps with the Shield, but that's not their fault, that's a Google issue. Why is it, that I can download a streaming app to my android phone, but NOT my Android/Google based streaming device?!?! Literally makes NO sense.
    I will purchase another Roku, but just may keep my Shield Pro as a back-up, as it's quite something to experience first hand. The Roku Ultra is no slouch, but there definitely is something in the Shield's higher price that you can definitely experience right out of the gate, and could highly recommend to any high fidelity enthusiast looking for something more than a mediocre Chromecast device; even the Roku Ultra offers more in picture quality and sound than a Chromecast.
