I’m super impressed with the sE v kick. The classic/classic setting is really close to the 52a the classic/modern sounded similar to the 91a and the modern/modern sounded like the d6. It’s literally like 3 kick mics in one
Now, THAT is how you do a mic comparison! To the point. Short clips back to back. No goddamn talking. I was surprised at the results because I was expecting the Beta52 to sound much fuller but this speaks to the importance of context and mic placement. Just because a mic works on a given instrument on a given day in a given space for a given song doesn't mean it will work in some other set of circumstances.
Big practical advantage of the 91A is that you can suspend it inside the base drum with 4 bungee straps, and put the cord through the air port of the shell, and have an internally mounted kick mic while not having to have a port hole on your bass drum. So if you still like that modern clicky live drum sound but want a nice full looking non-ported kick head for your band's logo or something or a really clean look, you can have both.
For no particular reason I present to you, 'An Analysis of the first 28 seconds' - Subtitle: The count at which that he looks at the crash, for each mic. (Because procrastinating more important tasks...) Shure Beta 91a: And of Three (3&) Shure Beta 52a: And of Four (4&) sE V-Kick (i): Four (4)** sE V-Kick (ii): Four (4) sE V-Kick (iii): Four (4) sE V-Kick (iv): And of Three (3&) Audix D6: And of Three (quick) 3& .... or 3a (if a was a triplet a: "Three a let, four a let, etc etc) ** He blinked before he hit the cymbal. Only on that take... Take what you will from this.
That's the best kick drum mic comparison I've seen, and I've seen a lot. It will be my benchmark when I eventually record my mic comparisons. Also, thanks for showing the not so popular V-Kick, the sound and versatility are impressive on this one!
I have the D6 and use it outside of resonant head with D112 inside which covers everything I need to capture. If I could only use one mic tho - I'd get the V kick due to those EQ options! Actually very effective - I particularly liked the classic/modern option. Very versatile and a decent price. My only gripe with the D6 is that it does sound particularly modern, not bad if you can blend it with a secondary mic, but on its own, a lot less versatile. Nice vid!
Ok I might get a 91a too. Its giving the click where my 52a gives the boom. Add a Subkick or LowFreq for over all low depth and you got a killer setup. You could even add a tube mic for extra warmth.
Thank you for this video. I been trying to decide on a mic for about 2 months. I want something in the studio that is versatile and this looks like it. I have a D6 and use it live. I almost bought a second one for the studio but I really don’t want 2 of the same mic lol. Looks like I get lots of mics in one with the V kick.
Very impressed with the V-Kick. I've used a D6 for the longest time, coupled with a 91a (live). Beta52a has always been my least favourite kick mic. Decent on Bass cabs though.
@@DruGaTecH Well, yes. That's why people do place the Beta 91A on the floor inside the drums (some with pad/towel/foam/blanket/etc.). I saw this in many UA-cam videos.
Almost perfect comparison video! What could also be nice to hear was what the mics sounds like when a bass amp and a guitar amp is playing loud next to the drum set. Which microphone is the best choice when playing live on stage?
I have SHURE Beta 91A and SHURE Beta 52a. SHURE Beta 91A for the KICK - IN, to get that click and attack SHURE Beta 52a for the KICK - OUT, to get the "WOOF" and low end. Mix them all together and you get a thick solid kick sound.
Beta 91 sounded best to me when soloed...in the mix most of them work pretty well though. I always use Beta 91 inside and Beta 52 just inside the hole and blend the two.
Of course I would! I have the habit to use both Beta91a & D6 so I didn't change for it but if I had to own only ONE mic for doing a large variety of sounds, I would definitely go for the SE :)
You had me at no talking. Am I the only one that liked the beta 91a up until the dblkick/china part? It sounded meh there imo. How does the beta 91a get placed inside the kick? When you say "Room" on screen, that means just the room mic as listed in the comments right? Or was that the full kit mic'ed?
For the 91 did you have the switch set to flat or pre-EQ? I've heard people saying if you set it to Pre-EQ you can almost use it without any additional EQ and get a great live sound.
Great video, love your playing :) I don't know how you got the Beta 91a to sound that good. We used it for a kick and it earned the nickname "Bum Mic" coz it made the kick drum sound almost like a fart, lmao. The look on peoples faces when we call out in the studio for the "bum mic" :P
I have all these mics myself for live bands I tour with. I've always had a 91. Recently loving the Vkick in classic / modern setting. Not a fan of low mid modern setting on it. Seems to get a bit woooofy. Absolutely hate the beta 52. Too much 2k clank.
A lot of them sounded quite harsh. Must admit I preferred the Beta 52a or the Audix D6. If for any reason you should want more punch, mids or faster decay you can add some EQ and compression. With the moderns and the rest you may not have that option.
Wow, not boasting or anything. I know next to nothing about drum mics, but next thing I see are comparisons of the Beta 52 and the D6, so I guess I wasn't the only person who thought this way. Genuinely surprised to find this.
Well... Audix D6 hasn't been built to be put half way through the resonant hole! Neither the Beta91, most of them do their best when put inside the Kick.
About the Beta91a, it was placed inside the bass drum as it should be. Thanks for the comment I will correct my description :) About the D6, depending on the result I want, I place it inside or just half way through the hole, pointing the center of the batter head. I had great results both ways :)
Wow... Never realized how much my Beta 52a sucks... I think the Shure 91a capturing attack in combo with the Audix D6 bringing that punch would be perfect!
10k Views! Thanks everyone :)
We have watched this more than few times! Thank you. Cheers🥃

great vid, I liked the natural sound of the Beta 91a

Best comparison I’ve seen. Not long intro , straight to the point. Great bro
I appreciate the fact that you edged us constantly with the reach for the cymbal over and over
Thank you for having this so damn to the point, its what everyone wants! More mic shootouts pls!

You're a hero dude 🤣
The eq switch on the bottom of the 91 is a game changer
Straight to the point!! And you can clearly hear what’s happening. Thank you.
Dude this video is a fantastic shootout. I really like the 91. Most open and natural sounding with the least amount of basketball boinginess
Great video! Much better way to compare real world than other videos I can find.
Wow. Now this is how a comparison video is done!
The beat was awesome, too!
Thanks a lot!
the 91 sounds great
Dude!! Great video! I like the V Kick Classic/Modern best
Agreed. Just got this mic today

Great video! Thank you! For me, SE wins big time!

D6 on reso has lot of low end.I was totally shocked..way more "natural" in a way than a D112 there ;)
This is a great shootout for these mics. I wish they were all done in this format. 🤘
I used the d6 on my bands last recordings and it was great for me.
Sounded cool on the bass too.
Love that midrange dip on the D6.
I know this is an older video about kick mics but man, love your snare tone.
91a and the sE V-Kick on classic/modern is exactly the kick sound I'm trying to go for
SE V kick and Audix D6 are winners here IMO. Working live sound those 2 mics slay it every time.
It depends on the genre being played but I do love a 91a on a kick. Great comparison video.
Ok I might get a 91a too.
Its giving the click where my 52a gives the boom.
Add a Subkick or LowFreq for over all low depth and you got a killer setup.
You could even add a tube mic for extra warmth.
that sE is pretty impressive to me!
I have 91A and Beta52, but the Audix in your video held its own...pleasantly surprised, i might purchase one now
I’m loving the beta 91a! I am still a massive for of the D6 on most kicks though
Thank you for this video. I been trying to decide on a mic for about 2 months. I want something in the studio that is versatile and this looks like it. I have a D6 and use it live. Joli comparatif, merci Sam
Avec Plaisir!
Intéressant comme comparaison !
D6 and the beta 91a are the best choice, I've heard a mix with a D6 inside and a beta 91a outside and it was godly
Did you really mean "D6 inside and beta 91a outside"? Or did you reverse that?
@@huyked is your brain in reverse?!
@@DruGaTecH
Why do you say that?
@@huyked Audix D6 inside. Beta 91A can only lie on the floor not with stand or something.

x2
I have SHURE Beta 91A and SHURE Beta 52a.
SHURE Beta 91A for the KICK - IN, to get that click and attack
SHURE Beta 52a for the KICK - OUT, to get the "WOOF" and low end.
Mix them all together and you get a thick solid kick sound.
Great video and playing. Thank you for being so succinct
Beta 91 sounded best to me when soloed...in the mix most of them work pretty well though. I always use Beta 91 inside and Beta 52 just inside the hole and blend the two.
This is how you do a mic-comparison. Thank you.
Nice video, thanks for just getting to it!
Great video and playing! Thank you.
Audix D6 for me..
Wanna pick up the Se Arena . The kick stands right out + you can play around with the sound settings.
Amazing vid man!! Love the Sound and versatility of the SE. Would you recommend it🤔
Of course I would! I have the habit to use both Beta91a & D6 so I didn't change for it but if I had to own only ONE mic for doing a large variety of sounds, I would definitely go for the SE :)
The V Kick is pretty amazing 🙌
I am Iron Man. Sorry had to do it.
When he's about to hit the crash and it gets cut... feels like a prank.
Man, the Beta 52A sounds all muffled. Totally considering another one of these mics
Amazing comparison video!👏 👏 👏 Just wondering, when you said classic/modern... Which switch was in modern, and which was in classic?
Thanks !
I did both combinations. The order on the screen corresponds to the positions of the switches on the mic when you look at them.
I like the isolation. You let us know how they do with the rest of the kit.
D6 🔥🎙️🔥
I had the same problem with the shure beta 91a too much high end clack. I like thebshure beta 52a performed or the audix.
Really nice sound nice demo bro, Cheer!
Thx dude !
This is a dope video, quality content
Thanks mate! 🙏😊
This video is so so helpful! Only Mic I wish was there was the AKG D112.
Classic/Modern, and 52a for me.
Se I'm impressed !

Hi ! Full room = all the mics, including room mics.
The beta91 was on a towel at 5-6cm from the batter head.
@@drummersdenproduction1926 thanks!
Hell yeah beta 91! 💪💪💪💪💪
For the 91 did you have the switch set to flat or pre-EQ? I've heard people saying if you set it to Pre-EQ you can almost use it without any additional EQ and get a great live sound.
It was flat, for the recordings I prefer to have the cleanest track possible :)
Can i hang some of this mics on my BASS Box ?? Im tryin not to use mic stand.Does it work, please ?? THANKYOU
Great, thank you for that zero fat content 🙏🏻
Seem like D6 has some internal gate or something like this.. Which one is your favourite?
Great video, love your playing :)

Great demo BTW
very helpful thanks!
I have the full set of these SE mics. They are super tasty! Oooohh yuuurr!
You lucky guy ! :)
Are the mics pointed at the beater inside of the drum? Or is it the positioning
straight inside pointed off axis?
Pointed at the beater :)
great content

Where was the placement of the mics?
See description 😉
Where the D6 makes it’s money is how little bleed makes it through
V Kick can almost do the D6 sound plus other 3 variations...
Great demo 👍
Modern/modern
Audix d6 excelente
Wow... Never realized how much my Beta 52a sucks... I think the Shure 91a capturing attack in combo with the Audix D6 bringing that punch would be perfect!
I'll stick to the E901 and the PR40. I disliked the sE models the most.
liked v kick / beta 91. never like beta 52. audix doesn't win for me either
I know it's subjective, but I cannot stand the Beta series. They all sound so boxy. I enjoy the D6 and sE's EQ
Beta 91 !!!
D6 and sE vkick win
No noto la diferencia
91
Definitely the Beta he didnt have positioned right for its full Potential the 91 was ok the rest were Lousy.
91a is trash, 52a is better.
I like the isolation. You let us know how they do with the rest of the kit.
