This was my first NIN concert. I went with my dad and was oblivious to the fact that this was the first time they played this live. So the next morning when I looked up the concert to see some videos and the only thing popping up was “First Live Performance of The Perfect Drug” and the date being the day before I was really confused and then my dad told me that I just witnessed the first ever Perfect Drug love performance. What a magical moment.
I was thinking this was probably the first performance. I'd looked for copies of it done live for ages when I was younger. Man, the last time I saw Nails live was in 2008.
I'll be honest, if this was shot from "Robin side" instead of "Atticus side" I could have sworn that was me because the second I heard the guitar I yelled "what... WHAT... WHAT?!" I literally could not believe it was really happening.
It doesn't matter that we don't know who she is or anything. The fact that it was captured in the video and we now hear it means that it is now an integral part of the performance and makes it all even cooler.
The drummer is definitely playing along to a drum machine, as I can for sure hear the Amen break in there still - But regardless, it's still ridiculously impressive on his part.

I count 3 people who clearly don’t know anything about NIN
There is nothing, NOTHING better in the world than being at a gig when your favourite band does something like this, a rare song, a new song, for the first time. I am so happy for all of you that were there and am so stoked they even played it, finally, now.
kyle1m Fear of drum solo being too hard for the drummer, to the point where it would “make his arms fall off”. Also, the song is surprisingly Reznor's least favorite out of all the stuff he's ever made.
Apparently Trent didn't listen to a lot of prog drummers when he made that initial statement about arms falling off. It's also sad that he doesn't like this song as it is widely regarded as one of his best... i mean if anyone had to choose between Perfect Drug and anything he has done post-2007, what would they choose? ;) Pretty awesome to see (and hear) that he may have changed his mind about the song!
Trent never did that statement about the drums, neither did any of NIN drummers, it was jut a fan speculation. In fact Josh Freese said the song wasn't hard at all for him - they worked on it before 2007 tour but coundn't figure out the right way to play the ending (the quiet part), so Trent got frustrated and dropped it.
nmacog Thats actually what MADE this song so hard to play. The drum loop is integral and not an aid to the real drummer, its its own instrument and to have a drummer perfectly synch-up with it while also doing high harmonies on vocals is batshit insane and they finally must have gotten it to where Trent was comfortable. Ilan is an undeniable monster and this is just another example of why.
The drummer is definitely playing along to a drum machine, as I can for sure hear the Amen break in there still - But regardless, it's still ridiculously impressive on his part.
This is the best video I’ve seen of the performance. Most other videos start in the middle of the first verse probably because they were so caught off guard.
Thank you for recording this. I was too stunned to record it myself and by the time I started, it was like halfway through the song. I want to relive this moment forever.
Wow....we were just talking about how awesome it would be to hear this live. But then thought the drums aren't humanly possible...this guy is pretty friggen amazing!!!! Thank you for sharing. I got to see Broken in it entirety on the opening night. This tour is epic.
UGGGH I went on the 14th and he played Closer which he didn't the night (When he played Broken) before but i'd trade Closer for the entire Broken ep for the first 6 songs of the NA tour. It didn't even dawn on me to get both nights in PHX.

@@indynugs you're right, he thoroughly enjoyed the show. He has aspergers syndrome so conveying his emotions and appreciation is hard but he had no trouble with this. He is also a very gifted guitar player. He learned to play most of his set list including "Lost Souls' by Joy Division. I don't think anything will compare to this show for him.
Brian Ashton Hey smart guy, the a was there because the tease was the subject and is singular. You may want to rethink correcting people when you're wrong.

Ilan, I think I spelled his name right, is an amazing drummer and did this song justice live. Dont know why Trent waited so many years to perform this live.
Kailey Ann He said he’s not a big fan of the song as it is, plus the drums are pretty tough to pull off in a live setting...but Ilan is obviously up to the task & did an amazing job! There’s a reason he is my favorite NIN out of all of them...and that’s saying something, because Josh Freese is no slouch either...
Great recording! Always amazes me how NIN can perform indoors, outdoors, in the light, in the dark. Amazing. I was at Red Rocks on 9/19/18 so I missed Perfect Drug. Look forward to seeing it in person in the future.
Actually it was the 2nd night that it rained, and they just moved everyone’s set times forward, so some people missed NIN. Still a great show tho! Thanks for checking out the video!
After seeing the Phoenix show on 9/14 , I was blown away. Trent and the band are tighter than ever, and (yes) relaxed but fierce as "F". I got the sense that these guys actually ENJOY playing the music. Especially Trent, who seemed more relaxed and engaging the audience. Great musicianship, very intense light show, and a setlist that seems to change for every show. Cold and Black and Infinite Tour 2018 NOT to be MISSED.
Yeah I was there too. He played the ENNTIRE Broken EP the night before sand even tho we got Closer I would've traded. Still best show I've been too since seeing him in 05'

That's really cool. My son is only 5, but I can't wait to take him to rock concerts. He likes slipknot, and green jelly 3 little pigs.
I was thinking this was probably the first performance. I'd looked for copies of it done live for ages when I was younger. Man, the last time I saw Nails live was in 2008.
So lucky you were there! I was at their San Antonio show in 2013 when they played All The Love In the World for the first time.
yeah I was just realized I haven't seen this song live yet... so good!!!
This was also my first NIN show and also didn’t know they have never played it live. Cheers my friend!
That girl at 2:18 when she figures out what's going on. I'm crying

Hats off to the drummer. Someone buy that man a beer!

Drummers isn't playing the breakbeat/jungle loop. He's playing along with it of course but not every drum is him

I couldn't agree more. I was at that show and I'll remember this moment for the rest of my life.
Sadly it will probably be the last time they play it too if they stop touring after this ☹️
@@ashleynicole2546 Trent already confirmed that this is *not* the last tour.
Yeah buddy! This was my 3rd time seeing them at this venue!
No shit!!! When did the song first come out, 1996 I think maybe??
Rumor has it they'll play Tool's new album on this tour as well
JimmyIronballs 😂
Wait, what? :D
Dont get ahead of yourself, spaceman...
clearly, you're thinking about the long delayed Tapeworm album........ :)

@@NineInchRuiner At least he finally got it to work, man I envy every single person who was there that night!
Trent said in an interview once that he didn’t really like this song because he wrote it during a very dark period in his life.
This is truly a dream come true, I can only imagine how it was to actually be there and hear the first chords, I would die.
It was fucking incredible. Goosebumps every time I think about it.
Almost did fall over dead yelling my gord off. Folks around me just didn't understand what was happening.
Agreed. It was fucking magical.
I think someone in the crowd had that reaction when you hear WTF?
Fuck. They FINALLY played this live?! I'm so jealous of the people who were there!
Robin Finck is everything.
I like the lighting they did for Ilan. Makes it look like he's literally on fire as well as figuratively
The one song I always wanted live but never got, I even got I'm Afraid of Americans.
They also played I'm afraid of Americans This Night at Red Rocks
i saw it live when Bowie played his last tour " Reality Tour" and it was epic. I still got the ticket of the show
5:00 ... I did not expect They would play that kick ass solo. I thought that was exclusively for a "mix". But it's my favorite part.
Ilan is an amazingly talented drummer, this should be defined as a pinnacle moment for him
not bad but he's playing against a drum machine ....
LOL if you can't see he is using drum samples with a pad, from the speed of the intro you're blind
Alan Peach I'm talking about the 5:40 drum solo

2:18 - exactly my thoughts as well my dear!
panasonicyouth1985 I can't believe that they would open with a track that Trent thought of as kinda "meh"

I'd say 2:13 so you can be sure to get that first note.
