  • What does Peter mean in 1 Peter 3:19-20 that Jesus preached to the souls in prison? This is a hotly debated passage. Some believe Jesus went to Hell while He was in the tomb. George DeHoff believes Noah had the Spirit of God resting on him before the Great Flood. Today on "Questions Over Coffee," Kevin Smith looks at 1 Peter 3 to attempt to answer this viewer's question.
We are the Church of Christ in Rock Springs, Wyoming. We know you have Bible questions. We want to provide short, simple, to the point Bible answers to questions like, “Why do Christians worship on Sundays?” or “Can Christians drink?” or “Should Christians celebrate holidays?” We also have a playlist called "In Need of a Refill" with sermon to provide people an opportunity to dive deeper into God's Word. Why do we offer both question responses and sermon content? So you can grow in your relationship with God and come to know Him better.
Currently, our goal is to post a new video for "In Need of a Refill" every Sunday at 8am MST and for "Questions Over Coffee" every Monday at 3pm MST.

1 Peter 3 19-20 this is such as Luk 16: 19-31, Abraham preach they don't fear Moses/prophet(Luk 16:31) as like as spirits in days of Noah who were disobedient, when the Divine longsuffering waited (1Peter 3:20)

Thank you your video and lesson. 1 Peter 3:14-22 can be better understood by taking a look at the extra biblical book of 1 Enoch, a second temple book that both 1st century christians and jews had much agreement with. Both the Letter of Jude and Peter's writing have direct references to 1 Enoch.
1 Enoch chapters 6-15 flesh out the story of Genesis 6:1-4 and according to Enoch, some of the rebellious angels are bound in chains by Archangels and sent to Tartarus till the time of the judgement. This idea could easily fill a book explaining but this Unseen Realm paradigm make the 1 Pet 3:14-22 reading much more understandable along with Jude and 2 Peter 2 as well.

I believe it has something do do with Abrahams bosom, We know if we die today we go to heaven but before Christ was resurrected, People who died, Who were not condemned went to Abrahams bosom, This is because there was not yet an acceptable sacrifice for sin they looked forward to the grace but it was not Yet, Now it does not have to mean he preached the gospel but could mean proclaimed victory, I don't know all the ins and outs of it just seems it's all connected here

Abraham bosom was a parable! All are in the graves awaiting the resurrection even David a man after GOD’s own heart is in the grave waiting for the promise.

There are some that believe "The Rich Man and Lazarus" was an actual event that Jesus was telling them about. Jesus begins an explanation/rebuttal of His parables in Luke 15:3-16:13, but when He picks up in Luke 16:14 there is a possibility that He simply continues on with His rebuke of the Pharisees greed with the example of what happened to the rich man compared with what happened to Lazarus. Jesus does not use any transition to indicate He was going to tell them a parable here. Was it a parable or did this actually happen? There is evidence that can point either way here. -Kevin

1 peter 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20.Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
the Spirits/ souls in prison are all the peoples of Noah's time who were overcom by devil/sin.
Spirits/Souls in prison = 2 Timothy 2: 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.)
In 1Peter 3:20 We are made to believe that eight souls were saved in response to the preaching, this means that the Souls in prison is just reffering to the people of Noah's time and not souls in hell.

If Jesus went to hell (prison) to preach as most Christians think , then every spirit would have been saved, i mean who would not accept His invitation to heaven and have stayed behind to suffer???? Makes no sense

Does anyone believe the Bible? Genesis 6:4 (KJV) There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Not men nephalim... half man half angle. Abraham's bosom.
Luke 16:23 (KJV) And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
The Bible has lots to say on the subject why don't people just read?

Do you think that you can be saved to be baptised?

    • @churchofchristrocksprings922
      @churchofchristrocksprings922  3 роки тому +1

Hi GodsentJesustosetusallfreefromsin! I do believe scripture teaches in a number of places that baptism is plays an essential part in our salvation. In baptism our sins are washed away and we are blessed to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39). In baptism we die to sin and are united with Christ in His resurrection (Romans 6:1-7). In baptism we are "buried with Christ and raised up with Him through faith in the working of God" being set free from the legal requirements of sin (Colossians 2:12-14). Peter compares baptism to Noah's ark during the Great Flood in 1 Peter 3:20-22.
(1 Peter 3:20-22) "who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him."
Now let me be clear that Jesus is the One that saves. Without His sacrifice, no one would have any hope. Baptism is just the "gateway" that God chose to "put Christ on." Without God extended His grace and allowing our sins to be washed away, nothing would help. Once our sins are washed away, God expects His children to allow Him to help them change to be more of what He wants.

Your answer: Jesus showed up in full glorified state, far above them now in authority, and told those fallen sons of God that they were defeated and would be destroyed at the final great white throne judgement... the second time they were told that. The reading of what Peter told them was "Christ led the captives captive."

The Prison that Peter is referring to is Hades. Hades is place where the souls of people who died without doing the will of God or those that died without even knowing the fact that there is God Wait. So Hades is actually a place of awaiting for the souls that still need to repent and be cleansed of sin. For this reason, the gospel must be preached to those that are dead. Peter talks about the gospel being preached to the dead again in 1Peter 4:6. If this Souls accept the word then they are taken to a place of mercy, "Paradise" . Paradise, like Hades is also a place of waiting but Paradise is where the souls of those who have been forgiven and shown mercy wait. Please note that Paradise is not heaven and there is no God in Paradise, it's simply a place of awaiting resurrection for the souls that have repented or did the will of God. Remember that Jesus was with that Guy who was a thief but repented on the Cross at Paradise, But after Jesus resurrected he clearly stated that he has not yet met God, that is simply because Paradise is not heaven but a gateway to heaven where the Souls of those who are waiting to be taken to heaven wait. The Gospel is preached to those that are at Hades(Spiritual Prison) by those that are at Paradise. But in order for this to take place those that are still in flesh must first be baptized for the dead by the Holy spirit baptism which is done through the laying on of Apostles Hands. The 144 000 that were taken to heaven are those that were baptized into Jesus and were shown mercy because of him. They are those that were Jesus's forefathers. If we, as the grandchildren of those who came before us accept the word and sealed by the holly spirit which is done only by the apostles then those whom have our blood(DNA) are forgiven, if they also accept the gospel which is given to them.

Hades is not mean some sort of limbo, purgatory, holding place, etc. this sort of teaching came from the Greeks (Platonism) during the intertestamental period. It was eventually absorbed into Jewish literature. But, this teaching of "hades" and its Old Testament equavalent "sheol" simply means the place of the dead, the grave. The Old and New Testament never taught that these places are a holding place for deceased spirits.
