Great tractors, I had the 4040, 4240, 4440 from early 80's on the farm, today only the 4040 left while the 7810 took over the 4440 (regret, but the 7810 is a Classic too), the 4240 traded for a 6150R 2 years ago, while the All Round model 82' 4040 still in service.
Thanks for showing Old Iron from time to time.
It's amazing what gets stuck on my UA-cam Homepage now. Anyone else getting a look at tractors?
Thank you for watching.
He needs to do some adjusting on the draft control settings.
In the video btp calls this a tricycle front. Around here we call it a narrow front with a single front wheel being called the tricycle model.
We called them the same..single wheel was a tricycle
Agreed. I have a factory 1066 narrow
Nice video Jason. I really like the "Mack" bulldog on the hood. GO BTP💪
Cool to see the narrow frontend.
We have a 4030 wide front no cab it has over 16000 hrs on it. Its still the go to tractor for everything from the silo blower to mowing hay. what a work horse gets used everyday never lets us down.
I grew up on one just like yours. Spent many hours on it. Great machine.
It has all it wants with that 5 bottom plow. The mack bulldog is a nice touch 👍🚜🚜🚜
If that plow was set right he would be loafing along
@@douglassellers7528 Yea I think it needs some adjusting and the ground is almost sticky too.
Love that old iron sound.
I had a 4230 loved it good all round tractor. One day just for kicks I hooked it to a 2 bottom plow and plowed up my garden. That was as deep as that plow has ever been pulled. I used the 4230 to cut hay rake hay and bale hay. That tractor was so tight turning and breaks so good. Used it mostly pulling a veeremer 2300 hydraulic rake. Wish I had it back.
The turbo on this tractor(I assume M&W), helped out if you could keep the water temp. down. The M&W fan, 5 gal. Alum. oil pan wasn’t enough if you turned up the smoke screw and put a load on it. 30 series was welcomed w/the wet clutch and Q/R trans. Basically a glorified 4020....
It is a m & w and it was on it when we bought the tractor at when it was 3 years old. You have to watch the pull you put on it
That is hands down the best drink holder I've ever seen🤠🤠🤠
Awesome video Awesome tractor,Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄
You said that the narrow front was for mounting corn pickers. We never did that. We always put a front mounted cultivator or hay rake. Cultivator are nice in the front because you have really good view of the crop to make sure you kill the weed but not the corn.
Really made for easy cultivating. Also very easy to make quick corrections.
It looks like he could use some rear wheel weights for a little bit more traction. The horsepower seems to be there and sounded great.
This thing is amazing
That tractor has a nice sound👍😁 the evening shot is awesome, well done😉👍
Thanks for posting. I like narrow fronts and I like it on this tractor with the open station, old school!
Wow...beautiful tractor! I love narrow front tractors.
I think this may have been the last tractor from Deere you could get from the factory with the narrow front end. HOWEVER, and this is noteworthy, there were 40 series tractors you could convert to narrow. My Dad did it every year on a 4040 to attach equipment needed in preparation for bean harvest.
I am fairly certain the 4030 and 4230 were the last factory narrow fronts. I did not say that because I have seen a narrow front 4240 with a cab.
That is one sweet tractor!
We have a 4230 with a 4 post lift and has over 10000 hours and runs perfect
Very nice.
The narrow front end was preferred by many who still cultivated row crops, especially with mounted cultivators.
Which, if any, drawbacks does the narrow front axle have besides the extra tire track between the rear tires? It seems like it might be somewhat more bumpy as there is no vertical travel in it.
Absolutely beautiful love the narrow front
@@2xKTfc The biggest drawback was safety. These tractors would roll over much easier than a wide front.
@@perrypavlat6909 That's a bummer. But yeah, no good being squished by thousands of pounds of metal. And all the repairs.
I plowed with a 4230 wide front open station it didn't have the roll protection bar on it. Pulling a John Deere 5-16 with automatic reset bottoms. The shift pattern was 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 1-2 for reverse. To shift from 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 you just moved the lever to the side but, to shift up a range you had to push the clutch in.
Nice tractor, like the power sound
I agree with Mr. Sellers, we pulled 516‘s with our 4230 and had no trouble. Pulled it in B -two orB - three 7 to 8 inches deep
Love the plowing videos. Thanks
Thank you BTP I have been looking forward to this video. 👍 Hope you get to film a few more of the last Tricycles.
John Deere made a swing around disk 375. I have a sales brochure on it from the mid 70’s and also saw one junked in eastern NC 20 years ago. I know it’s highly unlikely but if you ever run cross one would love to see it at work.
Rolling a John Deere
Looks brand new very cool tractor
Great vid! Love the vintage tractors
Do you call a 4230 vintage? Or those in the background? Lol. We still have a 4240 that does lots of hay baleing and raking.
@@workintractorssince04 yeah its almost 50 years old thats pretty vintage. I'm just glad to see some classic iron instead of all the 8R... 8RX... 8XYZ lol
Really like that tractor
Another top notch video. Very cool tractor.
I like that I like tricycle front ends
Get that plow level front to rear and side to side. Then watch that tractor plow ground.
Been watching a few of these plowing videos and so many of them don't have the plow set right
That plough needs setting up and the tractors rear wheels need to be brought in so that depth wheel on the back of the plough can run in the furrow straight
What i was thinking what a pathetic job of plowing
Well the tractor certainly get a good work out in the field
I like this one. It's an old but goody!
Look amazing.
Apart from the oversize chrome exhaust it's a beautiful tractor.
Great video
There's nothing sexier than these 2 types of tractors, the first one is a big narrow front tractor and the second had to be any bad ass tractor like a 4440 or 4460 built up with a bad ass loader made to work! And sometimes even the best of both worlds a model like this 4230 narrow front with a big old loader on it. I have a few narrow fronts myself and there's so many cases where having that narrow front especially because of the turning radius! It's amazing the areas where you can get the tractor into because of this, then matching it up tons loader there's alot of work that can be done with them that normal loader tractors just can't get into. I have always wanted to custom make a Massey 44 with a narrow front since I have an extra one laying around that is strip parts off of for my main farm tractor, and I want to put a full hydraulic 9 foot v plow on the front and then put a SBC v6 or a big bore straight 6 in it basically making it strictly for snow plowing then I also want to add a hiniker cab to it and some nice wider tires with rear weight's and also add a 3pt for a snowblower to move big snow piles for big snow years later in the season because it can be some extremely profitable work getting paid to blow snow piles out four people who hired truck plows where they can't plow snow anymore and run out of room and then with the different engine and transmission it would also have a good road speed and I wouldn't even need a trailer and with a three-point and I didn't need the snowblower I can run a salt spreader too
Cool video. Yes My brother has a Narrow Front Massey Ferguson 1130. That is the brand we run on our farm
This John Deere has a very great sound , i like old John Deere's and my grandfather has the Jd 4450
😁👍
Nice. 👍✌
Sweet
My dad had the 3010 with the tricycle front end, turn on a dime
Awesome Video!!
This was a nice tractor to see in action.
Great Video, the only ones seen in NZ are the old Farmall M age, thanks for shareing
That is my dream tractor a 4230 narrow front
Really cool tractor Jason!
Thank you for watching.
It would be great if you can find anyone using front mounted row cultivators. Haven't see that in more than 50 years.
Seems I recall front mounted cultivators for wide front end tractors as well. But were kind of a pain putting on and taking off. Much easier with a narrow front end.
Ahh the dusty cold old days, just need a heat houser!! No wimpy cabs... Love the time trips.
Thank you for watching.
Strange seeing a newer looking JD with the close together front tires . Where are the rocks?
That was cool to see
Are family farm we have all tri-cycle front ends. They are 2-cylinders
Hi was on a farm last week and spotted a Steiger Lioness tractor parked up in the nettles it has an caterpillar engine and an allis charmers automatic transmission ( which is faulty) not been used in 20 years. Hopefully will go back there this Monday and get some pictures. Don’t see these machines very often. First for me being a tractor fan
Wow. The Lioness is a cool custom
Retro fit Tiger Steiger. If you get some pictures I would like to see them. Send me an email at contact@bigtractorpower.com
Where in NE Iowa was this done at?. Thats my areas.
Nice video. I know a guy who used to have a 4030 narrow front open station.
Very cool.
I 4230 in Marion south Carolina on Mr Lance Williams farm the went out in it I was surprised to tractor 🚜 transmission went out.
thanks Jason for another excellent plowing video! First time seeing a 4230 tricycle front. Personally, I prefer stock tractors so not a fan of chrome add-ons. I was trying to id the three tractors in the background - looked like maybe a 3020, D17 and 730? I'm not as familiar with the Case tractors.
There was a 3010 utility, 3020 row crop, d17 allis, ji case 300 and 400
My Grandfather had a 50 model JD "poppin johnny" row crop tricycle wheel!
I had a synro range, open station, 4 post roll gaurd, wide front end. People will still argue with me. When I tell them it needed a little sniff of ether even in 100 degree weather to start. You could grind on it for a few minutes. It would finally get going. No Doubt very hard on the starter. Over the years I had it. I put many new batteries (6 volts) lots of new cables. Had several different starters on it. None of which made the least bit of difference in the hard starting problem. It's my understanding. That the heads for these tractors came out of the factory inconsistent. Saw a post on a forum once. This gentleman knew of a farm. Where there were 2 4230's exactly alike. Purchased and delived at the same time. One was a hard starter. The other started fine. It did bother me at first. Mine, over the years I just pulled the screen. Put a quick shot of ether in the breather. It would fire right up.I practice this for the entire 16 years. 8,000 hours I owned it. My only real complaint with the tractor. Was the fuel tank is too small. Can't go all day without someone bring you fuel. I would buy a new one in a second. Over these things they sell now with all the emissions junk on them. A very fine work horse of a tractor!!!
I thought the fuel tank sounded small for a tractor this size in the sales brochure. Thank you for sharing.
With those conditions I'd put a JD F725 4btm plow behind that 4230. 18" shares. Alot of slippage there with the 5btm plow. Used to pull the F725 behind a JD 3020 diesel.
Great video Jason 73 same year I was born 👍🏻
👍👍
A beauty. 🤜🤜🤜🇬🇧🇺🇸🎄🎁
Wondering if they have not invented rollover or switch bottom plows back east. One way plows? Never seen one out here, never. Started with the old McCormick tumble bug, then on to JD 4200, 4 18's, rollover, then to a John Deere 3955 switch plow, 5 18's.
Operator at 7:00 is struggling with the depth controls, likely the draft control too. But great to see the JD in action plowing IA field.
We have a 4320 that usually is on like a mower or a box scraper
Other than the narrow front its a cool tractor
Dual on the left side would be good.
Interesting moldboards on that plow. Seems they were designed for plowing in sticky conditions like wet clay. But I can't say for sure. Anyone able to confirm this or set me straight?
You are correct they mainly designed for wet ground stops the ground sticking to the moldboard
Tratorzinho e bruto 🚜🚜🚜💪💪💪👏👏👍👍🇧🇷🇧🇷
We've got a case IH 4230
Who adjusted that plow, seems to be to deep in front
Just need to raise the 3pt up a little.
??? Why is there a guage wheel on the back of the plow, this operator doesn't let it touch the ground 🤔 (of which is much too dry to moldboard plow anyway) ,, cool J D though, is it a "Roll-O-Matic" front spindle? For that smooth ride 😎
A glimpse of past times...
I was raised on tricycles Massey Harris, Farmall and Oliver - - - still like tricycles
I grew up in tricycle style tractors most John Deere 2 cylinders one Massey Harris and one international we have 5 with the wide front
I seen pictures of a white 105 open station narrow front tractor If I had to make the time I would have bought it because of the rarity
Had a roll a matic front end on a 67 4020. But changed it. As for the 4230. Under heavy load they burned the most fuel per acer of any tractor we ran. We ran all sizes of the red and green ones in the 70's and 80's.
I wonder what the gas horsepower rating was
Now that’s neat. Looks like he could use one or 2 more sets of wheel weights. Would be cool to know the work history of that tractor. Narrow front and full ps is screaming picker tractor but I think Deere’s last picker was a 237 and I think a 4230 is slightly longer than a 4020 so I don’t know if it would even fit. Only other thing I could see a guy wanting a narrow front for by that point is if they were still running a mounted cultivator.
What was Oliver’s last NF? If anyone I know you would. You have some good videos 👍
Now if Jason could find an Allis-Chalmers tractor to go with the Allis-Chalmers plow (maybe a D21?)
Heck yeah bro, we had a series 2!
I saw an AC struggling along in the video.
Plow now set right
Never saw one with a narrow front. I didn’t know they made anything after the 4020s with a narrow front
The 4230 was an end of an era for narrow fronts.
Odd to see bean ground getting rolled over like that in this parts. Usually corn stalks.
Neighbors have a 4230 cab and hydraulic front wheel assist.
That’s a rarity
Grew up with a narrow front ac. I believe it is to deep in the front also
John Deere offered a narrow front and that was called "Roll-A-Matic" but this tractor does have it. I love the 8 speed power shit transmission, much better than the newer 15 speed power shit. Ford was the first tractor to offer a true power shit.
The tractor looks nice and it is hard to believe that new that tractor costs new what you can spend on a 4 wheeler now.
Sometimes I have to look on those 1970s prices and do a double check. They were big dollars when they were new in their day but today the used ones bring more than what they cost new.
Where is this located
Northeast Iowa
Dubuque county 6 miles east of Dyersville! Grew up 1 mile from there 👍
👍👍👍
Thank you for watching.
A 4230 with a narrow front?
Very rare but I wonder WHY ?
i saw a tractor like this with a cab and a loader
Wow very cool.
It’s walking along with them 6 bottom plows he just needs to level it up
My neighbor bought a 4040 narrow front cab power shift. Been told that wasn't available. He had one. 3 yes later he put a hiniker wide front
Looked goofy
Very cool 4040. It would have been a good cultivating and corn picking tractor with a tricycle front and cab. I like the odd ball tractors that stand out.
I agree with others the plow is not set up properly, check plow manual for proper set up .
We own one with the soundguard cab, the 6.6l and quad range. My dad always said that its a lemon. I will say the starters on these things are a pain to change . It also had cooling problems if hooked up to certain implments, cause of overheating. They were a great tractor if had low hours, ours was overhauled at 8000 hours but everything needed changing a butload of parts. I would say the 40 series deeres was a massive upgrade compared to the 4230. I'd stay away from these. Go buy a 4240, much better tractor.
your right, the 40 series were way better. One guy told me you could walk by a 30 diesel with a "cold beer in July and it wouldn't start".
Never liked the narrow fronts. Those only belong on Johnny poppers
Narrow fronts are ok on the 3010's and smaller tractors but on the bigger tractors like this 4230, it's very easy to roll over!
Yup. They look funky on anything bigger than a 3020.
plug when muddy also
@@johnlee6054 not if they have scrapers
@@Aspire2Cycle In which scenario(s) does the narrow front like to roll over? In tight turns while pulling a heavy load/implement? I have no clue about tractors, so that's less obvious to me than it might be - I see that wide wheelbase in the rear that looks like it would provide a lot of lateral stability.
Lots of wheel slip.
To much plow behind the old girl !
i tought in america they dont use ploughs
Who told you that? Some farms do, just not as many a they use to.
Plowing potting soil no tractor needed id use my truck
She seems to be struggling. 🤔
