Greatest Hits was the album that got me into midwest emo and eventually math rock. As a kid growing up in St. Paul Minnesota, I was under the impression that everything good in music was happening elsewhere. This album changed that for me. I got to see them live in late 2017 where Beach Bunny was actually opening for them. It was the first general admission concert I ever went to and I absolutely loved it. It was really cool knowing that such great music was coming from people that lived less than 15 miles from me, and it inspired me to start making music myself. Seeing those tweets for the first time in this video makes me a bit sad. I understand that they want to make more mature sounding music instead of Greatest Hits pt.2, but alienating their fans is not the right way to go. I'd think they'd be more understanding of this due to the fact that Eric is a huge fan of Weezer's Pinkerton. I really hope that they find success making the music they truly want to make, while being a bit more understanding of GH fanboys.

@@rez_daddy Yeah that was the show! Pierre and Beach Bunny opened. It was fucking fantastic but I did feel a little bad for the venue owner. I was tempted to crowd surf at first but it was my first ever show and I was too scared lol
I met them 4 years ago when I was 16 after one of their shows in Massachusetts. It was a really small show(probably less than 15 people) and so we all hung out in a Wendys parking lot afterwards and it was a lot of fun. We talked to them about Minnesota and asked them how they got started and they talked about the school of rock thingy and hockey; seemed like they knew Sam forever so it was very strange of him to be removed but who knows? They were extremely nice and I'm glad I got the chance to meet them.
@@alyahbustillo5307 i saw a reddit thread explaining why Sam was removed. It's quite messy but they didn't mention pedophilia. There seemed to be a lot of nasty band in fighting.
It may be time for Erik and Stephen to consider playing under a new name. They’ve grown tremendously (for better or for worse) since the release of Greatest Hits, & don’t embody the emo-pop-punk sound anymore.
they've also changed immensely as actual people.....not really too respectful anymore tbh. which sucks bc they used to be my favorite band - and i had photographed them a few times. its quite sad bc you can tell that the passion really isn't there and they had worked so well as a trio together. everything went super downhill after sam left. a few of my friends were touring band members too and they aren't associated w the band anymore whatsoever - which is *very* telling if you catch my drift. they got me through art school among other things and their 'downfall' is just sad. ofc bands change their sound w the times, but its just so disappointing to see their new work - bc it could be sooo much better.
haven't watched the vid yet, but thank you for making this. whenever "yer killin me" comes on i always think about how different they sound now, and this reddit post i read chronicling their band members and drama within the band, also how their new music isn't the same.
You roasted them pretty hard here but I agree with everything you said. Also, to add to the rumours I heard one reason they parted ways with Sam was that he was kind of a diva on tour, always calling shotgun on the bed in motels and stuff etc. Which I can understand why you wouldn't want to tour with someone like that. But they suggest in their Audiotree session that he also played a big role in songwriting and arranging which is why the music changed so much when he left as well. But all that aside, hot damn, he's a good drummer.
I only got into them this year. Greatest Hits is such an isanely solid album. Their second one was super weak. Their third album i don't mind but it's not them at all. I came bsck and actually liked a few songs but on a third listen it all blurs into indistinguishable 60's rock worship
Man there was always something a bit off about Remo Drive for me, loved the first album but kinda lost interest pretty quickly after the second album onwards
I’ve actually really enjoyed all of their music. Nearly Perfect to me is definitely the high point of the newer stuff. The riff is just beautifully eerie and and there’s a kind of dark energy around it. I didn’t know about the twitter stuff though. That’s really off putting. If you can’t accept the fact that as a creator you will create things that do not go over well with an audience, and that that audience may express their opinions in various ways both abrasive and kind, you may not need to be a creator. Great vid as always, Nate!
It took longer for me to get into Natural, Everyday Degradation but it definitely grew on me. I just had to come to terms with the fact the sound was going in a much different direction, but once I did I enjoyed it quite a bit. Some good hooks on there, like the end of The Devil and Halos. Good lyricism too imo. Portrait of an Ugly Man on the other hand, idk I'm having a hard time seeing that one ever grow on me. From my experience they're cool dudes in person though, even if those tweets might suggest otherwise, and I wish them the best for their future endeavors. It's not easy balancing your own wants and those of your fans
Making Greatest Hits 2 can be as deep as you they want it to be. There’s nothing stopping the greatest hits “sound” from being deep. All we want is greatest hits with better production, even better songwriting (which includes more depth), and maybe a more cohesive and grounded theme.
"We have some new music out on all streaming platforms, so if you like it, go tell your grandma about it. We're trying to break into that demographic of older women" -Erik, 2020 I have no idea if he's joking or not but that explains everything
Honestly at first degradation didn't get my attention but after listening all the way through multiple times I honestly prefer it over greatest hits. It feels more personal, the problem with the sound quality is the production quality is lower quality because they self produced it
I still love the pure pubescent energy on Greatest Hits to this day. I thought Pop Music was alright but I hoped that their next full length project would bring back that energy. Sadly it didn't and I sorta just drifted away from their music. Then I recently heard about all this drama and felt kinda glad that I stopped supporting them.
I personally love their newer pursuits (maybe not as much as GH but I still love it). The whole twitter thing was immature but every time I've met the guys they've been unbelievably kind and somewhat awkward. They are growing as a band and it's understandable for people to drop off when that happens but as a person with a wider musical range than just emo, the two newest albums and the one EP are great in their own rights.
What was sad about the whole thing was that I remember the music press really hyping this band up around the time of Greatest Hits, not just Fantano, but other UA-cam channels that tend to cover alternative music, and rock/alternative publications were calling this band one to watch out for. When the second album came out, *crickets*. And it wasn't hard to see why.
Really, their attitude and music started changing once they got rid of their drummer, Sam. A lot of this footage includes him, even though he’s been out of the band since after GH. Sam Mathys is a good guy and great musician, and I’d recommend checking out his current stuff !
Oh. I really liked all their albums, all the music has very nice lyrics, I like the variety between albums, and, as someone with synesthesia, all of their music makes such beautiful and unique colors. I do think they could take criticism better, and they can definitely grow as people, we all can, but they’re artists. Artists don’t make art for the viewer, they make it to express themselves. In fact, their song on their newest album, “I Kidnapped Remo Drive” is all about how Erik feels about fans demanding him to make things he doesn’t want to make, and how, in his head, the fans sound. Lyrics like, “Just relax, ‘cause struggling will only give you ropeburn,” and even a line from the antagonist in Silence of the Lambs, Buffalo Bill, is referenced, “It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.” And my favorite, “I’d hate to see you hurt but how else will I ever get through to you?” All of those lines are being said “by a fan” and are all rather manipulative and abusive. If you force artists to make things they don’t want to, or don’t like, then there will be no heart and soul behind it.
Sam Becht was only a touring and recording drummer because he lives in Philly. Sam Becht is an awesome dude, can really say much for the rest of the guys in the band. Three years after this video came out now and I wonder how much they have left on their Epitaph deal before they get dropped.
The first time I heard of them was when I saw someone say “the drummer from jank is in Remo drive” and I was like G I M M E and then I listened to greatest hits and I was chill and then I continued and I was like oh
Personally, I loved NED. But I wasn’t feeling this newer album. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad album, it’s just not for me. I can understand it, though. I think they’re just getting older and straying away from the angsty music they enjoyed as teenagers. I feel like that’s what he tried to convey on Twitter, it just didn’t go over very well.
these guys are from my bestfriends hometown and we saw them live a couple times, they killed it (early days). saw them open for jeff rosenstock and that was a hell of a show. but eric has fucked everything up by acting like he's some superstar because he's from minnesota and his band got signed. he seemed to ruin everything from the moment they got signed. it sucks bc when i met them in like 2013 i was so excited for them and saw a big future. egos ruin shit 100%.
Sam Mathys was the Matt Sharp of Remo Drive. Erik and Rivers are both very creative but they need a little extra quirk from another member to put them into the masterpiece zone. But who knows, maybe someday Remo Drive will have their white album
Remo sounds like they’ve been shot with a tranquilizer dart. NED was a hot miss and Ugly Man is very sleepy, generic singer-songwriter. Even Erik’s vocals sound tired and bored. He’s yelling his soul out on GH and on Ugly Man he’s just meandering through the songs. As Nate said, Pop Music had me pretty interested in their Epitaph debut but we got NED. GH sounds just as good now as the day it released. It is an amazing album and it’s insane how they shot themselves in the feet so quickly.
People stopped listening because their new music has no personality. Simple as that. They just made it worse by being dicks about it. Maybe some people want Greatest Hits part 2, but I think most people would expect a band to evolve. That doesn't mean abandon all the passion and creativity that went into their earlier work.
I did enjoy their 2nd album a little bit but damn i really miss their old drummer Sam. I feel like he added the energy and passion towards their songs and now its like gone
Well artists are sensitive people. They put a ton of work into their art and it really hurts when people diss it. They don't respond well to criticism. Well, what else is new? It has been this way since the beginning of time.
I saw them play in Toronto just after they released Blue Ribbon. It was at a dive-bar - MAAYYBBEE 150/200 tops. The crowd was having a great time, people were getting up on stage, stage diving and crowd surfing, but I think a flag for me was that at one point they stopped a song and were like, "Can you guys not mess around on stage? This equipment is really expensive and we have lots of other shows to play" (or something along those lines). I totally got the sentiment, but these were people who were stoked to see them play, and it felt like he was like "stop having fun - we have more of a job to do". That always stuck with me...I still ended up picking up Greatest Hits on vinyl that night and enjoying the rest of the show, but, yea. Also not a fan of the new stuff.
I can see the progression of their music. It makes sense. It is the logical (albeit soulless) maturation of their sound. The production of the second album is far better. It’s cleaner. It’s pristine. It comes through well mixed and flows like melted butter. ...but melted better is NOT what I want from Remo. Remo in my head is a collection of people essentially ranting their frustrations out in a public forum to create a tuning fork note for people to resonate with. That’s the appeal of Greatest Hits summed up. NED and Portrait do not have that quality or brutal honesty. They are better albums musically. They are technically better produced and they are of a higher caliber especially vocally considering Eric’s range. But what the hell is the point of taking the edge off of sword?
Saw Remo drive in 2019 in slc with slow pulp. When they did the meet and greet after the show, I asked Stephen where Erik was and he said gruffly, “idk he’s eating pie.” And that was almost the only thing he said to me. I told them to come to MT and he kinda brushed me off, “yeah we’d love to play the big sky state.” The nicest guys there were Sam bekt and their touring guitarist (idk his name). At the time I thought nothing of it, but looking back it really did feel like they didn’t give a fuck to interact with fans and saw it as a chore. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They were my heroes at the time. Makes me sad.
It do still be sounding fresh doe. I was skating tonight listening to a mixture of Hot Mulligan and TFB and a few songs from Greatest Hits randomly popped in my head.
I always though that the reason for Sam getting kicked out was for an image. Maybe epitaph wanted to sell the whole brothers act and Sam was in their eyes an extra to that. Or perhaps it was the brothers that wanted to have that image and not the label
NED is up there as one of my favourite albums, albeit not as high up as Greatest Hits, but it's definitely got some great tracks like Mirror, Halos, Shakin, The Devil, The Grind, etc. however I can't help but feeling like the whole Twitter spat took a large part in people not giving the album a chance. If you've already got your fans on the fence, I wouldn't start violently trying to shake it. I'm glad they haven't repeated themselves though with Ugly Man, especially considering that's even more of a departure from GH.
Do you have ears? It's mid at best. Remo drive could have been the next MCR or American football, but they sold out trying to appeal millennial hipsters who saw right through their pretentious drivel and now they are left with nothing. A damn shame. Edit: I meant they were trying get high ratings on music sites like pitchfork but failed horribly.

This is too true :( I was in one of their livestreams in the past months and I was asking gear questions. They were asking for questions and weren't receiving many but they (Erik) ignored it the first time. After a small set they asked for questions again and I reworded my question to sound more intriguing and basically... Erik was like hey Stephen get a load of this guy.. Pretty much a bummer bc I was a huge fan of greatest hits and everything precursor to that but after that confrontation I got a sense that they don't seem to care about their listeners all that much. Sucks it has to be that way because there's definitely talent between the brothers and any solid drummer
I remember when the news of Sam being kicked out hit that the word was Sam was younger than them and still in school/confined to that schedule. And they preferred to kick him out and jump on the record deal than work around that.
This was one of my all time favorite bands, I remember watching their music videos and saying yes! That summer 2018 I was hyped I was going to see them live, then it was shot out of the dark they played new songs off the new album that wasn't even out yet they ended the night with "eat shit" everyone was excited and hyped moshing and jumping but that was it. Hopefully they go back to "greatest hits" the raw sound of guitar and drums and bass was the key
I’m in the minority in that I enjoy their third album more than GH. The groove and vibe just gets me. I respect bands that stick with what they want to do and don’t just repeat what they’ve done in the past because the majority want it.
Right? I really love the third album it’s my personal favorite of theirs, tho based off personal experiences and the lyrical content I suspect some rough psychedelic trips led to a lot of the turbulent ups and downs and constant changes for the band, and while it ultimately created music I personally could connect to, I also recognize it’s some of the most selfish parts and moments within my life that is making me connect with it and the album feels like it’s admitting that they know they dragged themselves into this position

also welcome to the math rock club B) I wish I knew more people in the area that would be into it
@@rez_daddy Yeah that was the show! Pierre and Beach Bunny opened. It was fucking fantastic but I did feel a little bad for the venue owner. I was tempted to crowd surf at first but it was my first ever show and I was too scared lol
haha i was at that show too!
Erik recorded my ep in 2018, it was fun. He’s a good guy.
So basically they're like "Yeah we did Greatest Hits for the cash lol. Now listen to our boring hipster music"
BRO DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH I’M EVOLVING
I met them 4 years ago when I was 16 after one of their shows in Massachusetts. It was a really small show(probably less than 15 people) and so we all hung out in a Wendys parking lot afterwards and it was a lot of fun. We talked to them about Minnesota and asked them how they got started and they talked about the school of rock thingy and hockey; seemed like they knew Sam forever so it was very strange of him to be removed but who knows? They were extremely nice and I'm glad I got the chance to meet them.
Didn’t he get removed for pedophilia rumors?
@@alyahbustillo5307 i saw a reddit thread explaining why Sam was removed. It's quite messy but they didn't mention pedophilia. There seemed to be a lot of nasty band in fighting.
Sam was not a pedo. Why would someone say something like that with no evidence
It may be time for Erik and Stephen to consider playing under a new name. They’ve grown tremendously (for better or for worse) since the release of Greatest Hits, & don’t embody the emo-pop-punk sound anymore.
every video is just gonna open with anthony now
He’s just a showman
They are a band I tried to get into but couldn’t nothing ever took root.
they've also changed immensely as actual people.....not really too respectful anymore tbh. which sucks bc they used to be my favorite band - and i had photographed them a few times. its quite sad bc you can tell that the passion really isn't there and they had worked so well as a trio together. everything went super downhill after sam left. a few of my friends were touring band members too and they aren't associated w the band anymore whatsoever - which is *very* telling if you catch my drift. they got me through art school among other things and their 'downfall' is just sad. ofc bands change their sound w the times, but its just so disappointing to see their new work - bc it could be sooo much better.
haven't watched the vid yet, but thank you for making this. whenever "yer killin me" comes on i always think about how different they sound now, and this reddit post i read chronicling their band members and drama within the band, also how their new music isn't the same.
its such a shame, they pulled a weezer
😪
Bruh Weezer has like at least 4 good albums
Fuckers fused Blue and Pinkerton for their first album. It could only go downhill from there...
GayDicks420 weezer has 2 perfect albums and a handful that range from pretty good to dog shit
@@SuperRat420 maladroit better be in there
You roasted them pretty hard here but I agree with everything you said.
I came bsck and actually liked a few songs but on a third listen it all blurs into indistinguishable 60's rock worship
have you checked their older pre-GH stuff? My favorites are "monetary" and "instinct"

Thats on facts
I have been DYING for you to do a video on these guys. BLESS 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
i didn’t stop... i just... paused for now :’(
Good way to put. Till Greatest Hits Pt 2 comes out
It took longer for me to get into Natural, Everyday Degradation but it definitely grew on me.
We're trying to break into that demographic of older women" -Erik, 2020
I have no idea if he's joking or not but that explains everything
greatest hits was unironically their greatest hit, how fitting. the other two albums I couldn’t even get through one song
Dam Nate I really could not have said it better. I was really hoping you would do a Remo drive video and you absolutely played it man
When I listen to their new stuff it just doesnt seem to have the same energy as greatest hits.
It’s a coincidence this came on my FYP because less than 30 minute ago, I had “Yer Killin’ Me” in my head.
Honestly at first degradation didn't get my attention but after listening all the way through multiple times I honestly prefer it over greatest hits. It feels more personal, the problem with the sound quality is the production quality is lower quality because they self produced it
they still play GH songs live and look like they love it. it gives me hope
I was hoping this video would shed light on why Sam was kicked out, but we still don't know why! Crazy
I didn't stop because I love the heavy Morrissey influence in the new album. And I love the drummer from JANK.
Wow. I legit thought I was the only one who didn't vibe with the newer albums.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I think the new album is killer. While I'd love to hear shit like Greatest Hits again, I'm happy with RD's current sound
these guys are from my bestfriends hometown and we saw them live a couple times, they killed it (early days). saw them open for jeff rosenstock and that was a hell of a show. but eric has fucked everything up by acting like he's some superstar because he's from minnesota and his band got signed. he seemed to ruin everything from the moment they got signed. it sucks bc when i met them in like 2013 i was so excited for them and saw a big future. egos ruin shit 100%.
It’s amazing how quickly this band got away from everything that made them special
Sam Mathys was the Matt Sharp of Remo Drive. Erik and Rivers are both very creative but they need a little extra quirk from another member to put them into the masterpiece zone. But who knows, maybe someday Remo Drive will have their white album
THIS. So spot on, this video has been dormant in the back of my mind for two years, damn you for stealing it.
I mean personally I still like the newer stuff, but I agree they screwed themselves over
People stopped listening because their new music has no personality. Simple as that. They just made it worse by being dicks about it.
Maybe some people want Greatest Hits part 2, but I think most people would expect a band to evolve. That doesn't mean abandon all the passion and creativity that went into their earlier work.
I was actually wondering what happened to them so this is perfect. Thank you
I did enjoy their 2nd album a little bit but damn i really miss their old drummer Sam.
The crowd was having a great time, people were getting up on stage, stage diving and crowd surfing, but I think a flag for me was that at one point they stopped a song and were like,
"Can you guys not mess around on stage?
I fully disagree that their new albums are "better" musically. The production is cleaner but the instrumentation lacks the character GH had.
Thank you for being in my recommended, currently binging and subscribed, really quality content
Every video you make is sooo good you’re such an underrated channel
I love how you try to mention MoBo in every video
Same
Just found this channel and I’m already binging it. I love finally having a channel that talks about music and bands I love
Really good point. I completely agree
I'm glad they haven't repeated themselves though with Ugly Man, especially considering that's even more of a departure from GH.
im sorry but how do you listen to two bux and not think that's heat
Do you have ears? It's mid at best. Remo drive could have been the next MCR or American football, but they sold out trying to appeal millennial hipsters who saw right through their pretentious drivel and now they are left with nothing. A damn shame.
Edit: I meant they were trying get high ratings on music sites like pitchfork but failed horribly.
Two Bux is good but it can't carry the whole album

I've started writing a video on a band i really enjoy and im definitely sort of stealing your style but you're for sure my inspiration for getting into this video style/music communities! Love your vids
That's awesome! As funny as it sounds, I wish more people would do what I do on UA-cam, or heck even just straight up copy me. The more people talking about this kind of music, the better. That my own biased opinion of course.
But please, by all means, start making videos! It's so fun and I fully-support you my mate/friend
@@NateTheMateForever holy crap haha I'm framing this on my wall! I mean the closest thing I've managed to find is like Polyphonic, so I figured if I wanted more content like this I could make my own, thats not to say I don't already heavily enjoy everything you put out!
@@randazrael I started for the same reason! There was content I wanted that didn't exist, so I thought "welp just gotta make it myself then!"
Aye thanks for linking our video in your doc we appreciate you🙏 great video
You know they're doing something wrong when a video talking about how they're losing fans has gotten more views and likes than the last Music Video they put out
This is too true :(
I was in one of their livestreams in the past months and I was asking gear questions.
Considering their album name history, they should name their next album "Its a Good Album, I Swear!"
Another great vid good job Nate!!!
I am emotionally invested into Remo Drive. I feel like you have to be going through something in particular to really like connect with them still.
This video helped me find Remo Drive! Ironic, I know. If you want more of them then search for their old EPs, there are some great songs in their
