I have a slightly different model SI4854CIX with catalytic liners. The "beep" sound is very quiet and no use if you are in another room.
The manual does not point out that the door needs to be shut to use the grill. It won't turn on until the door is closed and it shuts off on opening the door.

I've read mixed reviews on Hotpoints self cleaning function. Some say their glass has broken. Have you used yours?

Amanda I have the same problem my grill won't work unless you close the door I thought the oven had a fault.
