You got lucky with that one, Thomas. Here in the rust belt the bolts would have been almost impossible to get out. Well done.
I still manage to F'it up now and then. It's those stupid triple square bolts! =(
OH! thats where the ABS sensor is??? haha thanks for the zoom in!
You're welcome! =)
well done great A3 content, helped me save money doing front A3 wheel bearing myself 😉
Thank you for watching!
Wow you went all the way to Ireland for that last shot? You go all the way for your special effects🤣🤣
Have to do something to keep viewers on their toes!
Thank you :)
Thank you for watching!
You made it look easy. An alignment needed after? I have 06 A3 bpy fwd. I think i have a bad bearing when above 110km/hr but its not a constant hum. On off hum every 1-2 sec. Front right. When load steering at speed still same. Does go at the speed of the wheel. Hasnt gotten too loud. Just annoying. Any tips? Thanks!
Swap tires front to back to see if things change... otherwise stethoscope against the wheel bearing housing / steering knuckle to listen for crackling (vehicle raised engine at idle in first or second gear / drive if automatic). You can also put your hand on the coil spring to feel for vibration. Depending on how loud / minor the noise is... wait until it's louder (will be easier to pinpoint at that time.
Is it safe to set the front end on jack stands and idle in gear? Can
I use my stethascope on the bearing knuckle housing without removing anything further than the rim?
It's as safe as you lift & support it. =)
Parking brake applied or chock the rear wheels.
Leave the wheels in place... place the stethoscope on the wheel bearing housing next to the spinning outer CV joint.
If you have a button to turn off traction control... press it.
ABS light will come on / flash, but will go out once you drive the vehicle on all 4's.
If you don't feel comfortable doing this... don't. =)
Thanks Thomas. I appreciate the help. Too bad im in Toronto or Id bring it in to your shop unless you offer shuttle service? Lol
@@kevinmallon8692 LOL... sorry, forgot to reply about alignment. Should not need it, but alignment should be checked every 2 years... so if it has been a while, might as well.
Thomas, my 97 Jetta doesn't have anything the State Smog can read from Car for Smog. I read there are 6 or 7 steps to do yourself or go to a shop to have them use diagnostics to put in Smog Mode. I use my hand held code reader, and have no codes, mil light off. I know computer reads cause I got a PO134, then I replaced cat and cat back exhaust, and code went away. Do you guys deal with smogging your cars in Canada? I've seen a few Jettas you've did vids on with no Secondary air injection pumps. Hope your doing well! 😀
We no longer have smog checks in our area. Older cars were simply tested at the tailpipe... no diagnostic scan was done. If you have a scan tool that can read fault codes, take it along with you to the test facility and show them how it's done! =)
@@EXOVCDS Yeah, here in AZ for obd2 they plug in to Port. Their saying no info. I had a 4.3 v6 Astro van, 2000, passed all the time smog check by state, and had No Cat. Put Test Pipe in it's place. But I had that engine singing a wonderful song. Your right about tailpipe testing, but that's only for obd1 or earlier. My car has been sitting over 2 years, so I'll find a shop with a system that can put in smog mode. Thanks again!
sounds a wee bit rough! good vid Thomas! thanks!
Thank you!
One of the spline bolts that hold the hub asssembly is rounded out any idea on how to get it out?
Chisel & hammer? Place the chisel against the head of the bolt and hammer in a counterclockwise direction to break it loose... worst case, take a drill and drill off the head (drill size only has to be the size of the inside spline drive / or slightly bigger).
love it
Thank you for watching!
That's a lot of air tools in one video for you sir!
Variety is the spice of life!?
Right to the point. Excellent.
Thank you for watching!
@@EXOVCDS - Only one thing not referenced in your video: What's the torque figure for the driveshaft bolt? Haynes manual gives to way different figures - one for hex head bolts and another for the 12-point bolts. Thx.
@@touringusa8760 Which bolt do you have? Always use a new bolt.
@@EXOVCDS Thanks for your response Thomas. My '08 Audi 8P sportback has hex driveshaft bolts as OEM but the replacement FAG Hub Assembly Kit (5K0-498-621-FAG) comes with (new) bolt package including a 12-point driveshaft bolt. Haynes calls for 148 ft-lbs (plus 180° turn) for the hex head bolt but only 52 ft-lbs (plus 90° turn) for the 12-point which seems WAY TOO LIGHT to me for this bolt. What do you use as the torque spec for the (new) 12-point replacement bolt?
@@touringusa8760 Service info:
- Twelve-point bolt with ribs: 70 Nm + 90° turn
- Twelve-point bolt without ribs: 200 Nm + 180° turn.
The "ribs" are under the bolt head... does your bolt have ribs?
Do you know for audi 8v is it the same process ? Or at least the sizes of the nuts and bolts are the same size ?
I have not done one yet... but looks similar.
@@EXOVCDS Thank you mate, very helpful your upload.
Legend
Thank you for watching!
"Installation is in reverse of removal" BUT WHAT ARE THE TORQUE SPECS MAN?!?!?!. In all seriousness, love your videos boss. Keep up the good work. (I know this is a very old video, just happened to be the one I was on today.)
I'd have to check the service manual. It can be found online via a Google search... or downloaded from the Audi erWin website ($35 USD for 24hr access... best deal on the internet. I download 8gb of files every year).
Flush mounted bolts in the hub, huh, don't see that much. Thanks!
Nice design overall.
oh so much better than on the Golfer... I remember pushing that bearing out and in...
Yes... these can be real nice. Sometimes they just slide / fall out! =)
priceless graphics
Thank you for watching!
You're the man
No... you are, thanks for watching!
Hey so I gotta ask LOL.... the instruction you gave should work on a 2011 Audi A3 SLine. I know its a 8P just wondering and making sure. Just doing a tool list and prep
The mechanic shop wants 300 plus Labour in Ontario Canada.
I have the TWO wheel bearings coming from ROCKAUTO.COM ( the best place to get parts ) for 90$. I have worked on Hondas all my life and this is my first german car so yes im new to Hex, Spline and also Torx. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, should be similar... a service manual is a good investment.
I got it done today thanks bud.
The only thing that was different was the axel bolt was a 12 point 15/16 socket. 20 bucks for that and 50 bucks for the bearing.
@@erikl3546 Thanks for the update! I use a 24mm socket on the outer bolt. I prefer those bolts over the hex head / allen head bolt in this video.
I had about 6 seconds of talking from the Colbert show in the background of one of my videos, barely Audible and they flagged it. Instagram did the same thing! It's nuts...
It's even better when they flag videos for stuff that isn't even in the video!! =(
Did Leon ever have hair? 😂
I had one criticism for this video.... GLOVES! Haha.
Let me know what you think:
ua-cam.com/video/yrLIeeF_6to/v-deo.html
Unless you were referring to that video... then yes, Haha... I get the joke! =)
I was watching and waiting to place the best comment possible then the early video of Leon came up. I had to say there is a likness. (ha ha)
He's past his prime! =(
Baby Leon 😁😁
He was so cute... what happened?
Great work Thomas and the best takeaway from this video was to clean those bolt heads out. Otherwise it could turn into a rotten day! That baby dancing does look like Leon 😜👍
Sorted indeed. Just make sure you put those valve stem caps back on... I kid.... Too soon?
LOL!
Hi thomas, i dont know how or what u are doing but the spindles you tackle always " leave" the hub so easily...🤔 what's your secret? Sooooorted😁😁😅😅
Not always. =(
@@EXOVCDS What do you do when they don't?
@@clonkex anything to get it done. Heat, penetrant, air hammer etc.
@@EXOVCDS Righto. I'm doing it right now and the spline appears to be sort of rusted in place. I got it to shift a little by tapping it with a mallet but I can't quite get it to go further, and being Australia it's a fricking hot day out there :(
@@clonkex A hub puller is my first option to press the shaft out of the hub:

Leon still wears diapers, nothing has changed. haha
ROFLMAO!!!
When I hear Leon, I think Lynard Skynard...
Ha ha ha🤣🤣
That girl / woman reference looool
Thank you for watching!
Thomas EXOVCDS my pleasure.
It's not the same way as taking it of as he put bolts back in to hit it out if you did it the same way putting it back in and put bolts in and it them it will fall back out someone will end up doing it the same way . So it isn't the same way as he took it out haha
LOL... you are correct.
Send me your mailing address and I'll send you some of my channel stickers.
Not so much a wheel bearing as the hub assy. Disappointed. ;)
Can they be bought separately?
@@EXOVCDS why would you bother🤷♂️
@@gutzu265 I wouldn't... I was wondering if they were available separately . The boss only buys the assembly. Calling it wheel bearing or hub assembly (in my mind for this application) is the same.
