COMMENT: Which modern billionaire reminds you most of Charles M. Schwab - Do you see any similar patterns between today's tech titans and the steel magnates of the Gilded Age?
He lost his wealth due to the Great Depression as did many of other rich people. But, he seemed to be a great and caring person to his community and to his workers. Getting rich is hard, but keeping it is harder.
Immergrun (aka…The Schwab estate or Mount Assisi as it’s known today) his summer home still stands here at the top of town in Loretto, Pa. It is owned as a retirement home for the clergy by the Altoona-Johnstown diocese ever since it first went to auction in the 1930s. The house and the grounds are off-limits however, you can park by the greenhouse and walk the gardens. My great grandfather & great uncle were employed by him. My grandmother (she was very young) used to tell me a story about Mrs. Schwab, giving each one of the employees children, a piece of candy on arrival at the estate.
The legacy of having pioneered ideas & bettered the lives of millions lesser fortunate people, superimposes ANY financial gains or loss. A Life Well Lived, in my view. Many thanks
This was a wonderful video, narrative, video, and facts. I found it intriguing, with a bit of sadness. Wealth, I believe - at that time - was like ice in your hand. So many people lived on a paper value, without a safety mechanism. Thanks again , much appreciated!
Schwab was brilliant but his profession was unstable. That’s why Carnegie sold out to Morgan. The economy was subject to wild swings. Our ship building industry fluctuated between boom and bust, Schwab was involved in combining already established shipyards with steel mills for WW1, but by the end of the twenties American ship building was on the wane.
And not even his friends and family could put him back together again, nor his ass ∅ cia ate $... What's the story about the inverse relationship between money power and friendship and family?

@@nategray4989 I think the word was meant to be associates but typos and auto correct transformed the word.
