In this video Rick Shiels PGA Golf gets out on the golf course with a golf ball the is 100 years old!
Rick bought the golf ball for £50 from eBay and he heads out to the course at Marriott Worsley Park Golf & Country club to see how a ball that is 100 years old performs?
Rick also hits some shots with a brand new Titleist Golf Pro V1 golf ball to see the differences in performance!
Can Rick Shiels get a hole in one with the 100 year old ball? Also at the end of the video Rick cuts open the golf ball to see what’s inside the 100 year old golf ball.

This is how many times I say '100 YeArS oLd' 👇
OMG you def got me lol. I literally spit my food out laughing.
About 3 times less than £50
also, they are 50 punds each and from Ebay :D
You said '100 YeArS oLd' 10 times.
All of ur subscribers would have to Luke ur comment and I’m only 8 mins in lol 😂
That’s the first time one of those trick balls actually had me going for a split second.
Me to mate
Not me thanks to this
Man my jaw dropped cuz I was expecting that 100 year ball to disintegrate
I saw this before and it ruined it😞
i didnt even see it explode i thought he just shanked it in to the woods
You actually got me on that first swing
Yo verlisify love ur Pokémon guides
Me too
it seems he got us all
But when I saw it explode, I was not surprised!
Me too... i was thinking, wow, that was OLD.
Ball: I’ve waited 100 years for this
Rick 3 putts
with a "?" lol
Kevin Coghlan he was actually on in 3 with a 2 putt bogey. 😁
And than gets dissected
"Its like the ball has spent 100 years in its wrapper for this moment"
The condom in my wallet
*Im about to end this mans whole career*
Craig Simpson 😂😂😂😂
Underrated comment right here
Funniest comment I've seen in some time.
Doubt it, you’d have to actually get laid to end his career.
Lmao. That was good.
I literally had my mouth open when you hit the powder ball 😂
Hahahah got ya
Let's do that at district my guy 😂👌
Damn, I wish I didnt read this before I saw the fake ball.......
Great spoiler comment at the top of the list.
I woke my wife up shouting ‘Nnnoooooo’ when that ball exploded🤣😡😡😡
"After 100 years it finally got in a hole"
Story of my life
Kids watch this
This comment is so underrated
Tubuerex They wouldn’t understand
Tubuerex report the man then for his inappropriate UA-cam comment
lmao
RS: Shoots a bogey with 100 year old ball
Me: Takes a gentleman’s 10 with ProV1
My play group only goes to 8. We call it a snowman ha. Snowman hole? Yup.
So relatable
lol we do twice par +1 as the max in my group... par 3 is 7, par 4 is 9, par 5 is 11
@@agathianspy2469 hell no. If you need those rules. Double is fine. Look into handicap if you think Double is cheating. Handicap is super cheating.
Imagine waiting in your package for 100 years only to play one nine hole round and then get sliced in half
😂😂😂 irony's of life
That's six more holes than most of mine make it before being lost in the woods ....
Looks like the balls at my local driving range 😂
Hahaa
@@RickShielsPGA Actually it would be interesting to see you play a few shots with a range ball to compare the difference..
Way better than the ball at my local driving range 'sherdley park'
Damn lol
Right. Don’t know what the big deal is I hit buckets of these
Drinking game for this vid. Take a shot for every time you hear:
-100 years old
-Square mesh
-Fifty quid
-Cut it up
-Don’t want to lose it
-It’s Smaller
That would be called alcohol poisoning
Titleist pro v added
LOL, see you lads on the other side! Cheers 🥃
Theat wgss a fubbwn gssme tzx
If you really wanna get hammered, watch any Shiels video and take a shot when he says "Right" 🤣
Would've loved to see you use a 100 year old club to hit that ball
That would be interesting to say the least.
I have a few of them that I've found over the years. They're available on flEbay for not too much coin.
@Kayla Henning ? 100-year old clubs are not too hard to find and they are not really that expensive. Putters and certain rare models are, but thousands of standard models were produced, so they're out there.
They would have to be hickory clubs. I don't believe metal shafts were commonly available until about 1930.
Eirik L He missed a trick there
I just stumbled on this channel while working a third shift last night and I'm so glad this type of content is getting good views and engagement. Golf is a great sport and you do a fantastic job as a face of the game with videos like this.
Rick: this ball is 100 years old I’m going to cut it open later
Also Rick: I don’t want to ruin the packaging
The irony
Classic 😂
It's a reverence thing..
My jaw literally dropped on that first tee shot! I was like "NOOOO!!" lol ... good one Rick!!!
You'd need to hit these with 1920s clubs to get the full experience. Yes, you fooled me, an excellent clip.
Good point. Missed opportunity
They still were using wood shafted clubs at that time. You don't get the same experience from using a modern carbon/titanium club. He still has another ball left though..
Yeah that would be a fun thing to do in another video if he can get ahold of that kind of stuff. I do like seeing how the ball alone performs different.
Mate this channel has grown so much since I started playing golf about 4 years ago, well done a million subscribers is crazy keep it going brah!
Would love to have seen how it stacked up on the GC quad
Maybe next time haha
100%, I was hoping for that.
That ball probably would not have lasted through Rick's durability test. The ball was getting worn out on the first hole.
Lucky he bought 2
Absolutely agree.
When I played St. Andrews years ago, I found a Dunlop 65 when searching in the gorse for my ball. Made a great souvenir. Not sure how old it was since that ball was made for a long time. Probably the second best thing about my round there. Getting applause from the tourists watching on 18 was really nice. They must have really appreciated my 2 putt for bogey.
How old are the balls? Didn’t quite catch that part.
Kaddywompous i think they’re a 2008 batch
Pretty sure he never said...
Ryland Carroll i don’t think anybody asked you
Haha, I wrote the same comment, then scrolled down 3 comments and saw this... damnit
I wanted to say the same thing....and then someone made a drinking game about it. I don't dare try!
"There's no alignment on it"
Ball: completely covered in straight lines.
Ricky, I'm sure you'll figure it all out someday... 👍
I’d love to see how a golfer from 100 years ago would get on with 2020 equipment!
They would improve a lot! Shorter shots into the greens #1 reason!
Lets dig them up!!!
Well ! Pretty good thanks. I find the ball the biggest improvement like you saw here. I remember buying my first box of Spaldings from Sports Direct back in the day.
They would be incredible ball strikers. Golf took a much better swing with those old wood shafted irons. I taught myself to play with my Grandpas Hogan woods and blades. I still miss the 2 wood. The woods with the sole plates were actually pretty easy to hit off turf.
I thought it was a ferrero roche for a minute, when he was getting it out of the box
I'm here replying to comments! Say Hi & *SHARE* this video with friends!
Rick Shiels Golf that packaging is awesome! Love the videos Rick! Keep it up man.
Absolutely hilarious start. Love this series Rick. Thanks for the years of fun and wish you continued success. Do you think at some point you might do a USA tour and meet with some fans? Maybe for something like a few golf clinics or 3 to 9 hole rounds?
Thanks so much mate
It’s pretty interesting watching the flight and reaction off the club. It almost looks like a practice ball.
Thanks for the content brother! Very interesting video.
The old balata 3-piece balls always cut so easy. Miss hits were a learning experience. But they felt so soft unlike the early surlyn covers.
Cut open one and the rubber bands just kept undoing themselves as though it were alive!
Inside, the very first Super Balls.
I thought that you had been sent some Ferrero Rocher by accident......
I'm eating one right now. I did a double-take.
LOL!! It did look like that
Man this video was deep, I was in tears the whole time rooting for the 100 year old ball.
Bahahaha 😂😂😂😂 I was like 👁O👁
When that ball exploded 😂 you got me 😂😂😂
Honestly I think this is my favourite vlog you’ve ever done
Seriously Rick that was awesome 👏
Love your passion and your content! I know this is two years old but all your videos are amazing!
Thank you for not click bating saying “hitting a hole in one with a 100 year old ball 💯”
I actually played similar balls when I first started playing back in the 70’s... my dad and his buddies had lots of shag balls that they collected over the years. Thanks for the memories!
*Ball goes 100 yds shorter on his drive compared to a normal ball
Also Rick : Decides to only go 1 iron longer on his next shot.
😂
@notformebeaky as someone who does in dry summer, I can confirm I am excited by anything+ at the moment. 0 run out
@notformebeaky I have a swing speed of 122
@notformebeaky Okay. Thank you person from the internet ✌ I know it is unusual though so no worries
@notformebeaky Ofcourse I am working on my game. Get that jealously checked brother - you'll find people that hit the ball further in golf, play your game.
My father would have been 97 this year. He was the most amazing golfer I've ever known. He was never one for new styles of clubs or equipment and played all of his games until just before he fell terminally ill, with a small canvas golf bag that he found in a second had store in St George Utah, with a #2 persimmon head driver that he only used on par 4 or 5. A #1 Iron, a mashie and a pitching niblick, seriously, and a putter one of his students made for him in High School shop class when he first started teaching. He had a golf pro re-do the mashie and niblick onto steel shafts and told me once"no man will ever make a better club". His original golf bag was an old burlap sack he had my Mother cut down and tie a strap on to it and found the other bag just as the burlap bag was falling apart. He tee'd off with the #1 Iron and could hit a ball at the age of 70 farther than I could at 30. He was teased relentlessly by guys at the golf club he belonged to, but refused to change and I honestly believe he took great pride in the fact he could beat these guys with their fancy bags full of brand new clubs of all sizes, and he hated the new style of golf balls. He said there was no control in them. He was a Scotsman, born and raised, was a child of the depression and lived to be as frugal and thrifty as he could, and lived to that off beat beat of the drum his entire life. Sometimes I miss him, sometimes I think about all the times he pissed me off, but god damn, there will never be another golfer like him anytime soon. (sorry, a bit of topic, but I was just kind of in that place)
I friggin' soiled myself on the first swing! That was hilarious!!
I mean really OMG 100 years old it warms my heart just to look at it, thanks for sharing this.
Fully tricked me Rick that was hilarious. Glad you’re back making videos!
Thanks mate
returned to golf after a 18 year lay of,,, arrrr all my equipment out of date,, but was recommended to this channel,, chose new ping irons, but through you, i learned of golf bidder,, driver and putter from them,, top company, watch all your videos, and finchys,, love both your channels, big fan,, learn so much through your reviews,, and love watching the course vids, you and pete battling it out,,, im down to 12 hc now,, thanks
"There's no alignment on it" Rick, there's a square grid on it! lol overall great video
Haha good point
@@RickShielsPGA I'm not a golfer but i can see that 'every' ball has a alignment, just Like the 'straight flight' ball it comes down to wanting slightly more drag on the outside edges (sides) of the ball, and/or less drag along the middle line of the ball. I would suggest with any ball, to find the smoothest line on the ball with the least dimples and use that line as your alignment. Would be interesting to see a balls air drag demonstrated in a wind tunnel, with some way of applying spin to the ball, also a comparison between an aligned ball and a miss aligned ball. You could also show how backspin creates loft :)
@Ron L. I feel a little like I've hijacked your post... sorry about that :)
Side note: I'm not a golfer because its too expensive, and really not that inviting to new players, feels a bit like an elite invite only club. From video games and the small amount i have played it seems that the game itself is awesome.
It's not inviting because of pre conceived notions. And it's actually incredibly affordable.
I could send ya some clubs to get started if you need them?? Let me know. Or just start by wacking at a ball on a hunk of grass somewhere!
How cheap can it be? My local course; 18 hole, full length and pretty nice (I live in the middle of no where though), gave a locals special for $150; unlimited golf for 3 years!!!!
Before that; when I lived in the cities; I could easily find rounds of golf for less than 20 dollars using websites for deals. Even as low as 8 dollars! That's 3 to 4 hours of entertainment for under 20 dollars. That's a pretty good deal. A movie costs more than that!
Let me know your area and I can help ya find some great deals around ya... Golf is great so the sooner you get into it the better!
@@lawrenceshdow Thanks for the response, I'm from Queensland Australia, probably not close by :) but it is a small world :) I'm also approaching 40 so i wont be going pro i don't thing :P but never to late to pick up a good hobby :) I guess step one is finding a golfing wing man, is that called a caddy, i think my knowledge is distorted a little, thank caddy shack for that :P
Kinda side note: I have a bit of a dodgy upper back, been leaning forward and looking down to much of my life, any idea if 'strong' swings would aggravate the issue?
@warwicksmith , I too am in QLD and took up golf in my mid thirties..... best thing I ever did. Don't believe the pre conceived notions, everyone at my club is exceptionally friendly and you will find that at most clubs. Just get out and have a go, you'll be surprised how many people are in the same boat. You can definitely buy clubs second hand low prices to start off, I got my first set from the tip shop.
One year my grandparents, who were ok for money, gave me some golf balls they had found in a skip for Christmas. A great accompaniment to the cassette tape with bits from classic fm on. The balls were split open and mouldy. What a great xmas
Rick: there were TVs in 1920.
😂
Give him a break. He was only 30 years off.
First tv’s were sold in 1927, not sure what you are laughing at?
Tom Sanger - 30 years?? I think you need to go back to school bud... 🤦♂️
@@doggin6 1938 was when the 1st commercial TVs were introduced to the public and "as late as 1947 only a few thousand Americans owned a TV." By the end of the 20's there were only a few dozen TVs in the world and they were in research labs. WWII blunted the progress of home TV use and in England it was stopped completely. 1948 that is when home TV use really began to take off with hundreds of thousands of sets in use. Rick said "The 1920's...there wasn't even TV around was there?" No, it was not "around" then so my 30 years off statement is generally accurate. If you want to get picky, bud, I could have said 27 years and been a little closer.
@@tomsanger5548 no. You are wrong. Lol. The first TVs were in 1924, they started being sold commercially in 1927. A quick search will help you. Google man. Use it.
@@doggin6 I'll stick with my analysis since he used the term "around" meaning in common use. In 1927 they were not "around".
Been watching rick for three years....and honestly, he used to iratate me, however he makes honest coments, and now I'm aditated and I've grown to like the lad...
I'll never wanna hear "over a hundred years old" again after this video
This is such a fun channel - I've been binge watching all day. Great job!
*explodes*
Me: OH NO!!!!
Me 5 seconds later: Well played.
Just wanted to let you know your channel has helped me rekindle my love for golf. I appreciate everything you do Rick would love to meet you someday!!!
Legit just shouted OH MY GOD when that fake ball exploded! 😂 got eeemmm
Keep doing what you’re doing, you got me more interested in golf and back into playing
This was a great video. I was screaming at you NO USE THE 7 IRON! on that par 3 but you didn't hear me.
Haven’t played yet but got about 8 buckets of range balls in 2020. Your channel at least makes me feel like I’m getting lower scores... and HELL I just enjoy the game more now. Thanks man
Had me fooled. I shouted, “It freaking exploded.” Haha. Awesome
Rick, playing with this ball was a nice touch. Thanks
Had me fooled! I thought you finally figured out how to utilize the new SIM driver! 😂
This just made my day. That was so fun to watch this video. Good on ya.
2:04 I had a little heart attack and thought, OH NOOOOO !!!
HAHA, great joke, you are the best! Great video, as always 👍👍👍
Rick that was terrific, thanks so much. Would love to see some more holes played if you get time....
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That was AWESOME!! Tot thought the antique BLEW UP on the 1st shot!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was fantastic. My mouth dropped when the ball blew up!!!! Thanx for the video
2:04 Good one, Rick. Had me going, 100%.
Amazing video Rick! Would have loved to see you smashing them with 100 year old clubs.. so you could get the same feel of old golden days 😀
Can you do another course video like this but with a golf ball from the 70’s or so? Like maybe the Dunlop 65’s or something similar?
Thanks for the video, i thoroughly enjoyed it
Fantastic joke, I was thinking that the entire time. Well played. 😂
Now this is great golf content !!
When you cut open the ball I was gobsmacked as it looks exactly how I’d expect a multi layer ball to look.
Cp Pc It was a fake.Ive seen them like that.Balls were never made like that a hundred years ago
@@therealcyclingchannel4734 you should Google Coburn Haskell golf Ball.
"Rubber Core Golf Balls
The advent of the rubber core golf ball changed the face of the game of golf as we knew it. This new design was invented in 1898 by Coburn Haskell in association with the BF Goodrich Company. This new and unique golf ball construction and design featured a solid rubber core, high tension rubber thread wrapped around the core, and a Gutta Percha cover"
Nicolai Svendsen Its a reproduction.
They were made like that... In fact; I have over 50 of them. Not reproductions. I display them at a local golf course. Each kind full and cross section.
Anthropomorphizing the ball was the cutest thing tbh.
“Rick what ball you playing today?”
Rick: ...
What a difference a hundred years can make. Enjoyed the video, Rick.
never in my life have i seen a video pop up and say "uploaded 32 seconds ago"
Haha
I must be getting really sad in my old age, but that was one of the most enjoyable and intriguing videos I've ever seen! I was literally glued to the screen...seriously!
"I'm holding a piece of history"...and then he cuts one in half. Anyone else feel the pain in that?!!
It was very interesting to see the insides. But I couldn’t help but think as he was doing it: “You bastard!” 😰
Wicked, thanks so much for posting this vid bro!! buzzing!!
You need to do 100 year old golf ball with 100 year old clubs on a 100 year old course with a 100 year old bag
Really a cool VDO - Great idea - Thanks.
"This ball has waited 100 years to get into a hole."
Well, that's about how long it would take me to put one in.
@spencer ray It is from the Crosses at Columbine. It was never intended to be a profile picture. I did a series of videos from when I drove to Columbine High School in 2003, four years after the shootings, and visited the memorials. At the time, I was doing research for a book I never finished.
Fun experiment! Keep these coming. Most fun watching you out on the course vs in the training room
All I can think of is “Loose skin and old balls, gross”
I am a child.
Me too... Lol but i do like old golf balls to collect. Love the game and the history
Im a Big Kid
Big Daddy quote, ty.
Good movie.
I hate sitting on my old balls!
You make really really quality content, like that fact that you bought a trick ball just makes it way better
Me : Gets a 100 yr old ball
Also Me : Looses it on the first hole
Well you better TIGHTEN it up!
FAH Q thank you, it drives me nuts when people spell lose wrong
Loose instead of lose is the number one; most common mistake I ever see, outside of there, their, they're.
I probably did it myself for a long time. Until I didn't.
Also... Buses. Why the hell isn't there two s's... Actually how do you write the plural of the letter s.
Oh shit. I should have stopped before I started.
Dude Athlete lose is the opposite of win, loser is the opposite of winner, loose is the opposite of tight, and looser is the opposite of tighter
Dude Athlete Loose is like when your shoe lace is not tight. Lose is when you are not winning. Thanks for taking my free Kindergarten lesson
That's a collectors item Rick. Less valuable out of the wrapper. When I was a kid, the balls were wound elastic. Balata covers would cut if you hit them thin so if we found one with a cut we could sometimes peel the cover off. I never had the patience to unwind one all the way.
Everyone at 2:05: omg no how
No one:
Rick: iM oNlY jOkiNg
I just started golfing on a regular bc I got a job at a golf course and I've learned some stuff just from watching you
Take a shot every time Rick mentions how old the ball is, guarantee you will be passed out by the end of the video!
Matthew Thomas or that it cost him 50 quid
That’s not true. The video is only 15 minutes long. It takes 20-30 min to process drinks. I’ll drink a 1/5th & be fine 15 min later. 1 hour later different story
David Moss as you can see here we have a gigantic nerd man named Aidan probably 🤓🤓🤓
Huge fan! Someone talented yet down to earth...like Golf...classic!
I’m old enough to remember that Golf balls were still wrapped like this in the late 1960’s-70’s.
It's good to appreciate the classics
First hole: duck-hook, gone.
A few observations:
Missing the putts was almost certainly down to the green... if you could be kind enough to describe that 'ploughed field' as a green!
You had me fooled with the exploding ball. I did think it looked nice and white, but fully believed the old one had disintegrated. Brilliant!
I loved how enthusiastic you were about the whole experience and could genuinely feel your nervousness about losing it. Wonderful!
Marriott Worsley is not just wet; it is a 100% certified bog and anything in the air will get plugged. Not a nice place at all (purely personal opinion)!
When I started golf, many of the balls were still very much like that, although the 'Dunlop 65' had not long been released (Have I really been playing that long??).
Finally, this illustrates in spades how it is the ball that has provided the most of the huge distances we see in modern golf. Give us a ball that behaves like this (other than the damage!) and courses will not have to be lengthened. Indeed, courses could be smaller, easier to walk, cheaper to maintain, and quicker to play!
7:58, when he starts playing on the golf course. Thank me later.
Thanks!
Thank you bud
You got me when you hit that exploding ball! Hahahahahaha. Great video Rick as always.
You had me like “there goes 50 pounds”
RICK JUST LIKED MY COMMENT 🤩
Awesome video as usual Rick. Very cool to take a stroll down memory lane and where golf balls technology has come from and has advanced
12:52 - Damn. That ball is buried.
First tee shot got me good 😂😂 mouth dropped in awww
Had I known!! Had 2 sleeves of the ball back in the 60's. 🤬🤬🤬
Wow now you’d make a few hundred quid 60 years later. You made a solid choice of getting rid of it
Some videos deserve a thumbs up after 20 seconds. This is one of them
50 pound each? 😳 I’d sink em straight into the nearest water hazard on my first shot😂
And I thought it was painful to sink a $6.50 glow ball into the drink a few weeks ago. I can’t imagine losing a piece of history with my power fade off the tee.
You got me Rick. You got me good. Well played. I saw that first swing and yelled “Oh sh***********t!!!” Haha
Ummmmm lol...am I the only one that heard Rick say "they had TV in the 20s" 😳
Alex Hardt the first TV was invented in 1927 so he wasn’t wrong fellas
John Logie Baird
@Alex Hardt yeah man hate to say it but you're wrong
The first TV may have been invented in 27 but they weren't widely available until the 50s so 🤷♂️
@@dolans_w230 that's not that was being argued though
