  • Rodtang is a walking stick of dynamite, and punching him in the face only seems to make him stronger. This indestructible Iron Man has had over 300 fights. For them, it was the worst day of their lives. For him, it was Tuesday. Let’s take a look at how this Muay Thai deity uses high IQ tactics and techniques to dominate the competition.

Holyfield performed incredibly in those fights, but the headbutts and holding definitely helped. Especially in the psychological game. But that's part of it. It doesn't discount the magnitude of his achievements or ability. Also getting away with fighting dirty like he did took some otherworldly situational awareness. So many unnoticed headbutts lol. Impressive in its own right, tbh.

Rodtang brings a Mike Tyson, peekaboo pressure fighting style to Muay Thai. His defense is his offense. He is always moving forward and in his opponent's face. He sets the tempo of the fight - and he sets it extremely high for even pro level fighters - forcing his opponents to get gassed, retreat, or abandon game plans. He slips with every punch he throws, and he takes very few punches to the head - which is why it seems like he can take many punches. The truth is, a person can only take so many shots, and the ones he does take are usually not too hard because of his slips. Moreover, he anticipates every single one of his opponents attacks, choosing to strike at the first sign that they've committed to attacking and hitting them before they can hit him. He's not a fighter that fights retreating or backing up, and I don't think anyone has ever made him back up. He uses his double or triple defense strategy as a way to observe and collect data about his opponents, dialing in their reach, techniques, and openings. And once he sets his targets, the constant pressure begins. He takes going first, moving forward, and stalking an opponent to a whole new level not really seen in Muay Thai. I think the only kind of fighter that can beat Rodtang is an outfighter with great stamina, speed, footwork, and patience to keep Rodtang at a distance and chasing while peppering him with precise shots when he comes in a la Muhammed Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard.

Rodtang understands the art of war very, very well. He seizes control (read: “control”) of the fight by either applying constant pressure, or by mocking his opponents to either intimidate them or get under their skin and anger them, causing them to *lose control* of their emotions and react recklessly.
“If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him” - Sun Tzu; The Art of War

his short frame makes his balance works like a charm. his lowered center of gravity allows him to endure a lot of fight ending shots without buckling down, it's not always the chin, it's his overall composure.

I'm a fan of Demetrious Johnson, but I feel that Rodtang shouldn't have been given an official Loss on his record for a "special rules" match where he is fighting in manner in which he doesn't train or compete. Then again, MMA is admittedly new to me, so I don't really know how things like that are typically handled.
