- The Half-life universe is home to many terrible fates. The vast majority of the community believe that the possibility of being transformed into a Stalker is by far the worst, but this is nothing in comparison to the other atrocious dangers of a Combine controlled Earth.
What was the worst fate? What made one experience worse than another? And would you rank these in the same order I have? In this video, we explore them in this Collection of Terrible Fates in the Half-Life series.

What truly is the worst fate?

casserole
Metrocop because your just trying to survive but get beat up by your family. while your still in control of yourself.
casserrole incident is the worst fate of them all
By far the casserole incident. That was his last peaceful meal before the black mess incident and the combines rule and some dumbass crowbar enthusiast ruined it
Perhaps the most barbaric fate even worst than what you described , is the core hold of humanity the combine has : Rather or not to drink the water to make you forget . If you refuse the water you will suffer de hydration . What if you do defeat the combine off Earth but have no more water ? That way the combine still wins wiping out humanity by wiping themselves . If you drink and forget , you may forget your loved ones , relocated to another city and become a soldier for the combine and kill your family . You still die , or they decide to turn you into a stalker anyway.
One fateful day, the scientist at Black Mesa, dr. Gordon Freeman, woke up and got to work to push some buttons. Only this time, he was "the right man in the wrong place". All the other scientists watched Dr. Gordon Freeman push the button he should've never pushed. No one could've truly know, what terrors would that results in. The world would never be the same ever again. Those few, unlucky enough to survive, will never forget the tragedy of The Casserole Incident.

I see why Dr. Magnusson couldn’t forgive him for that incident
IT WASNT A BUTTON IT WAS A CART
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
"this was a fate worse than Jeff."
out of context that line is hysterical
I had to say it 😂 😂
Jeff is the end
Wrestle with Jeff get death. 😢
Jeff the killer
I really wonder how Magnuson made it through the casserole accident. I would've lost my mind personaly.
Same 100%
Real
He probably did lose his mind. Can't even rely on a simple creature comfort to take the weight off such an unprecedented disaster.
And STOP FUCKING WITH THE MICROWAVE-
The most soul-wrenching line of Father Grigori when the player dies is:
"So... again, I am alone."
Grigori mourning the player's death is my fav little detail that I don't see many other people mention much
Stasis doesn't seem so bad. To quote Red Dwarf: "Oh, you don’t feel a thing. The stasis room creates a static field of time. See, just as X-rays can’t pass through lead, time cannot penetrate a stasis field. So, although you exist, you no longer exists in time, and for you time itself does not exist. You see, although you’re still a mass, you are no longer an event in space-time, you are a non-event mass with a quantum probability of zero.”
Simple as that.
Good way to time travel... 1,000 years passed in a blink of an eye without the cryo pod. Technically your the same age but out of style and covered in antique "relics" compared to whatever society you resume your life into. Like a crusader appearing suddenly in modern times!
God I love Red Dwarf
There's that Stephen King story called "The Jaunt" on teleportation which is pretty horrible, which is like stasis in some ways, just spatial instead of temporal. If you're conscious while teleporting, you don't experience an instant. You experience eternity. Your body moves instantly, but your mind gets stuck in some latent space for what feels like billions of years. Imagine being without senses for so long, you will run out of thoughts to think. "Longer than you think!"
I feel like being in stasis is akin to being dead or the stage before birth (for those who believe in afterlife). You essentially do not exist. There is no consciousness. When you are brought back from stasis, it would probably look like when you wake up from a dreamless night.
it couldn't have been forever because his brain can still remember how to speak and what his dad said before he went in, it was probably like 500 years which while it doesen't seem that long comparatively it would be absolute torture still@@WilderPoo
Half Life made me realise that there are things worse than death and I feel like death itself is a mercy and salvation to them because of how much pain and suffering they had
100%
And that casserole
The worst one.@@CaptRed0
True true, I remember seeing some fool in a YT comment say there's nothing worse than death.
Tried to reason with 'em, you can't really when their heads are so deep in the sand.
@@dr.virus1295 truly a fate worse than death
I always think it would be so cool to go into the half-life universe, but thinking about how fast it can truly become hell. Maybe I should just stay here.
Barnacles and headcrab Zombies actually gave me Nightmares when I was a kid, I swear every time I see them I couldn’t finish the rest of the game.. I was too scared and I’ve imagined how it’s would be like if the barnacle slowly dragged me to him and killed me or headcrab jumpscared me and stuck on my head and control my body while I’m still alive.. I used to play the first chapters when you fight the Civil protection and that’s it
You'd just have to be aware every single thing happening around you at all times. You'd rarely get to relax.
@@Skyrionn oh my gosh you actually replied!
@@SkyrionnI’d die in a day lmao my lazy ass could never
*loads AR2 with malicious intent*
The barnacles still scare me a lot. As a kid I was stuck for days in some chapters because just seeing the body of the barnacles close together (even dead) caused me horror.
It's just that awful realization that you've been caught and hear the noise of the barnacles tongue and mouth...
I had a similar experience as a kid with the Dead heads from Zelda OOT.
Friggin creepy slow moving multi hand having gapping mouth chewing freaks.
@@Skyrionn That one barnacle vent with static prop skulls is easily one of the most terrifying places for me. Not only is it so claustrophobic, but the static, cleanly licked skulls are equally as terrifying as the half-chewed skull gibs, Something about the extremely clean skulls meaning these barnacles were just full from their previous meal.
Skulls in any game, especially valve games, give me the creeps.
Such a simple yet terrifying enemy design, I got really uneasy every time I saw them, dead or alive, something so alien about it that makes it so scary. The underwater barnacles in Black Mesa has similar effect. They are easily my most feared creatures in Half Life franchise.
@@danielmiller3781 Even after killing a barnacle, I have the feeling it's gonna snap me as soon as I pass under it's tongue.
I've had a theory for years that the headcrabs from Half-life 1 and 2 were actually two different types:
The headcrabs from HL1 were natural, feral headcrabs, as they show no signs of being organized in any way. Their hosts also showed no signs of consciousness once they became zombies. On top of that, in opposing force they eventually would grow into giant, hulking, projectile throwing beasts that we never saw in HL2.
The headcrabs from HL2 on the other hand were genetically modified by the combine to be the ultimate terror weapon. Likely modified so that their zombification process would not only keep the host conscious, but also make it obvious to every else that they're still conscious and suffering in ways unimaginable. The headcrabs were also launched in large pods to areas that freeman was known to be at. Their hosts also never grew beyond the initial stage of infection.
technically lamarr is a normal headcrab, because you can hee dr kleiner poking lamarr with a stick
but he looks normal in half life 2, heck even his underside looks like the normal headcrab
maybe the headcrabs in ravenholm turned into that shit because of evolution
@@brianery more likely the devs just couldn't be bothered to create a separate model for a headcrab that players would only see a couple times.
@@badideagenerator2315 bruh just recycle the model of the headcrab from hl1
Bro, that's what I've always been thinking about the headcrabs
@@badideagenerator2315 Well they edited her model to remove the teeth
I think I remember something that a dialogue in HL2 said that there were no wheat fields left on Earth after the Combine or something like that, cause Chell entered the surface in a wheat field, it acts as confirmation that the resistance won
Isn't there bread in Alyx, though?
@@roman11777 most likely very stale bread.
Imagine being one of the soldiers in the seven hour war. See your comrades and the best tech Mankind has to offer being destroyed withing seconds.
Seeing Wallace surrender in name of Humanity.
The feel of despair and desperation.
Nobody survived that war.
I thought the Casserole Incident was going to be a horrific description of being nuked in the microwave by Gordon Freeman. That you'd go as far to describe in every vivid detail as the seconds felt like hours the pain inscrutable. As you were ruined. Your ingredients erupting from you. With only the ire of a silent, yet perceivably psychopathic presence forcing its gaze down upon you. Unable, as a casserole. To understand the pure waste and wanton destruction being wrot this day. Know your purpose and lifes dreams were to go unfulfilled. In your final moments before the indomitable pressures around you force your very being to burst you let out one last gasping dispation of air pressures in that asking: "Why?". Your final glimpse of this world before entering oblivion are hallucinated memories. Imagining the moments you'd have spent with your creator The loving Dr. Magnusson.
I loved reading this.
@@Skyrionn Same... It was too funny
You may rest now, for here I bring you my like. Farewell, Apostate of Casseroles.
Beautiful
Just gotta love how the nuked casserole is not only canon in this story, but caused by Gordon himself (for some reason), lmao
He's the true villain of the story
when i realized you could do it in half life 1 i inmediately started a new game and spammed the use button on the microwave until the damn thing exploded
I believe stasis is probably the second worst thing here behind being controlled by a headcrab. The fact that Gordon almost blinked into the future means he most likely has gotten no sleep or rest, and he still hasn't had a chance to fully mourn his lost past as he is quickly shoved into another trip through hell is truly terrifying.
Yes! This is exactly what it was. I knew it would split people. Some don't see it as an issue at all, others see it as awful.
it's worse sleep during 50 days and a machine wakes you up just to complete exercises and sleep again during 50000 years, if i was chell, maybe i commite suicide during the 3th time
@@Skyrionn and to think that Adrian Shepard is still stuck in stasis is even more terrifying because he hasn't been mentioned even after the events of hl2 ep2 meaning that his use for the gman may deal with something that may not even be the combine.
@@mascotapreuniversitario963 and the fact that she may be the last person of her race alive and now has too wonder the world alone is terrible.
@@Skyrionn just five more minutes gman come on
I feel that, in a way, Jeff had it better off than Headcrab Zombies. At least he lost what little of himself remained so that by the time you find him he's mostly a husk. The Headcrab Zombies are still aware, and have consciousness in there, trapped inside their own bodies.
Yeah, I think it's probably a safe assumption that Jeff died a long time ago. I imagine it similar to the feral ghouls from fallout.
blud compared losing a casserole to getting killed in every way possible and impossible 💀
Food is really important to me 😂
you know not of the casserole… you uncultured swine

@@Skyrionn starvation is a very bad fate
The casserole one is actually something I had thought of but never actually bothered to talk about because it felt so out of pocket.
Naw man, you don't mess with coworkers lunches. 😤
@@durkhurker6268 imagine having 20 years of experience as a black mesa scientist just to have your meal ruined by a dude's first day who went to the gun academy instead of the institute of technology

Addendum to Arnie and the casserole story:
When Freeman returns after 20 years he finds and for some reason takes with him Arnie's most prized possession: his beloved garden gnome...
Gordon is just a menace.
@@Skyrionn meanwhile 3650: "What... am I not a menace??"
I remember in HL1 that zombies kneel over their victims and pull flesh towards their stomach, but I've never seen anyone talk about it. I just assumed the split open chest and stomach is to allow for putting things inside the hosts stomach(?) and it regurgitates it up to the headcrab to feed on. Just one more awful thing added to the zombie experience x)
HOW TO LOSE ALL YOUR FAT IN SOME UNCONFORTABLE STEPS
Yeah, their exposed ribs also look a lot like like teeth.
you forgot to mention the worst part about the Headcrab Zombies. The human were pretty much conscious all the time. Every time you hear it scream is not the headcrab screaming but the human, you can even hear "help me" in the scream sometimes
I played those games as a kid and the sheer amount of nightmare fuel they contain completely flew over my head.
It's just those small details that you don't really notice isn't it. You're more focused on your quest and the horror is the backdrop.
@@Skyrionn Yeah, just kill the aliens and the bad guys with all the cool weapons, solve some puzzle here and there, and roll credits. The Combine has to be the most horrific antagonist I've ever seen in fiction, and what makes it even worse is that there could totally be something like it out there (or in some other dimension).
Same, I just treat this as another shooter game back in 2004 with Half Life 2. The terror sets in once you look at the story in a deeper level.
the casserole must've been a nightmare
If you think about it, the zombine faith takes a long turn, those people were once metrocops who were forced to battle against there own and kill there own just to live
then were slowly turned or promoted into soldiers who have probably experienced many battles and adventures without realizing it cause the combine wipe out memories
And a anticlimactic ending being turned into a zombine, and the only concious thing is the empty soul inhabited in the soldier
When I first played HL2 when i was young, i cried when i had to leave Grigori behind because of how lonely he was. Even today, it's really sad.
The casserole incident. By far the worst possible fate. Having the excitement and anticipation of a good warm meal taken away from you is truly something no sane soul comes back from... At least without some changes...
I really do belive that half-life really is one of the worst ever games you could ever live in. Not only is the world is horrid and barren but the threats and terrifying ways to die make it worse, but nothing comes close to any of the fates displayed in this video.
Thank you skyrionn for these exelent videos
I'm sure there are many more fates too. I'm gonna explore more. It's a scary world. Thanks for watching!
Any kind of transfiguration seemed horrifying, even into becoming a soldier, since you'd underdo all those horrific surgeries and have your memories wiped, deleting who you once were. Yet the Combine somehow convinced the Metrocops that it was a good thing.
After watching this though, the combined torture of becoming a headcrab zombie and being stuck in decaying waste would have to get my vote. You're in never-ending agony and you're glued in one place, maybe nobody will ever find you or even consider putting you out your misery since you're no threat to them.
I always thought the Stalker was the worst fate. But having taken a deeper look into the universe, there are SO MANY more
Similar to kapos in the holocaust I guess. A loaf of bread makes a good bribe when you are starving.
Entropy zero 2 makes transhumanism less scary and fucked up since Bad Cop is always cracking jokes and one liners and seems to relish being a Combine Elite way more than he did being a Metrocop even though ik the mod isn’t canon lol
Hey, man! Great video! I heavily enjoyed the introduction, not too drawn out while giving necessary context. I noticed the variety in music as well; phenomenal job as always! I chuckled to myself when I saw the casserole bit. I like that bit of humor in videos with dark topics like this one. Keep up the great work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Little fact for the “what cat?” If you place an item on the little teleporter in Kleiner lab and continue to activate the portal. It’ll eventually blowup on the 2nd portal, giving you the achievement “what cat?”. Probably indicating that the cat exploded. Makes sense why they didn’t go into detail too.
I feel like the explosion was actually the teleporter malfunctioning with the item being teleported either disappearing or being sent to god knows where.
Actually....the fate of that cat was much worse. You can hear it in the beta version of half life 2. I think its still in the files somewhere. Barney says that the cat teleported but it had its insides out and vice versa. "I had to make sure it was still a cat"
Pretty sure the combine had already invaded when Chell escaped the first time and it’s assumed that the combine was defeated during her time in the relaxation vault
yeah, north america was implied to be destroyed by the combine and chell comes out in a nice looking area, although they could've meant just the cities were destroyed, the upper peninsula of michigan is incredibly isolated
There's a video by Daryl Talks Games called "Stories That Use Time To Hurt You", it perfectly explains and puts into perspective just how horrible of a fate Stasis truly is
I'm gonna have to look that up!
Really interesting video concept and executed extremely well. 10/10 video.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the audio files from the screaming headcrab zombies are human, indicating they are alive. I might have missed it though….
i like how u are the only youtuber who posts activley about hl.Thank u for everything hl is my fav game!PS:ur content is great and i see u are really putting work in these videos, keep posting
In an alternate universe, Doctor Kleiner opts to test the early functionality of the teleportation devices himself but Lamarr got teleported along side him and ends up like Brundlefly.
As again skyrrion a amazing video👏 . But a question do you take viewer suggestions about games to cover?
Thanks for watching them ☺
Absolutely!
Your videos are amazing. Very informative and great to experience!
That's very kind of you to say
@@Skyrionn As a side note - there will never be a Half Life 3 lol. Mindset of people isn’t from the 00’s anymore. Gordon would be some random penguin gender and the combine would be based on some political spear head haha.
I think the first one is implying existence erasure, to be destroyed in an impossible way makes me think about the second law of thermodynamics, nothing is created or destroyed, only transformed, but somehow they found a way to completely erase a mf
A new video, thanks so much man!
Hope you enjoyed it!

Ha glad you’re over the worst now
mate! That’s another terrible fate eh😂
Really nice perspective and honestly I never thought of these things after all these years. I think Father Grigori's and even more Adrian Shepard's fates were the worst because the consciousness is still active, and knowing you can't do anything for a change is just horrible. Stalkers and perhaps zombies are walking vegetables to me.
As Always, Amazing Video :)
Meanwhile, on 26:00, is this a PC version of Alyx? Where can I find this?
Great comment. Adrian and Grigori did get a raw deal.
Yeah, it's the Half-Life: Alyx NoVR mod. Check them out on Twitter ☺
5:00 The cat is a referernce to the old "the fly" with Vincent Price. There is a missing cat, too
Love the quote at beginning. Also just noticed that the microwave has a "head crab" button
Gonna have to look at the microwave again
Your videos are epic and so beautifully made! I can tell how many hours you put in to create such epic content!!! Thank you so much!!!

Wow, thank you!
I'm glad to have helped in some way. I hope things get better. Sending good vibes!
Thank you! I really appreciate your good vibes and it will lol especially cause i don't have to worry about half life terrible fates!
Seriously though I just count it having too because life is up and down and the up has to come up sooner or later.
In the meantime I am grateful to you and look forward to enjoying your work when things are going great too!

it really sets the mood for some reason and i really enjoy lore explaining videos
i am really glad i had found this channel
Thanks for watching them. I'm glad you found the channel too!
17:21 That NPC was getting some crazy backshots to his head from that headcrab GOD DAMN
Fantastic video as always. Kinda surprised you didn't mention that one scene in Opposing Force where a scientist gets kidnapped by a Shock Tropper. BTW can I ask you something?
Thanks for watching! You can ask anything!
I got 2 questions:
1) a question related to your video about the cut slideshow from HL2. More specifically the thumbnail. When it was first released the thumbnail read "SLIDESHOW" if Im not wrong. Now it just reads "CUT", which makes it a tiny bit inconsistent with the other thumbnails. Why did you change that and will you consider changing it back?
2) I like the addition of subtitles. Will you eventually add them to all of your older videos?
Sure.
1) The video didn't perform too well and I though people may relate the word "Slideshow" as not too interesting. I rarely change thumbnails after they've posted but I just wanted to show off this cut Half-Life media. I may change it back at some point though if it's noticeably different to the other thumbnails.
2) I'm glad they're making a difference. I may do. I've added them to the last few months of videos. Is that something you'd like to see on all of them?
Yes, i really do
Wholesome moment
Oof, that ending. Yeah, it is a certain type of pain never getting that closure. Although it does set you up for life, sometimes you never do.
I pray one day we get some sort of closure. Until then, I'll accept Epistle 3 as the end.
@@Skyrionn I don't. Love Laidlaw's work but Epistle 3 was incredibly meh for me. I prefer where the Alyx team took the timeline. Revenge arc with Eli? Hell yeah.
I have never played half-life but this video makes me want to play it! Excellent work!
you should play it, even if fps games is your cup of tea the atmosphere is absolutely insane
please do more this video was great!
There's more to come!
I love your videos they make my day
I wouldn't mind seeing more content like this.
Looking out of the video for a sec and seeing "The Casserole Incident" made me laugh so bad. Mostly a serious video about the horrors of the Half Life universe and then poor Magnusson having his casserole destroyed makes the list lmao.
Love this kind of video
Noted. There may be more.
@@Skyrionn I think compilation style could be best for your channel - maximise viewer retention, ‘see the forest not just the trees’ style of analysis, can specify into areas that seem to pique interest most
Let's go new video WOOOOOO
The casserole incident is gotta be the most tragic one Since you can't eat anything anymore because combines fucked the food and drinks in earth
Edit: also Jeff's fate is kind of similar to the chompers from darkwood both are mushroom/spore related infection and skulls splited open and used as mouths
I'm guessing that the so called "Decaying victims" you brought up (humans with headcrabs attached to them burred under radioactive waste) finally had their suffering come to an end after the destruction of City 17.
It will be a good Night,
Thank you for the Upload ❤
You're welcome 😊 thanks for being here!
Half-Life fans waiting an eternity on a contuation and ending of the game is one fate I wish on no one.
Truly the worst fate
please write a encyclopedia about this ahahahaha, always a pleasure watch this videos!
every half life video lights up my day
I'm glad you enjoy them!
very informative and intresting
Jeff’s death reminds me of Wallace Jenkins death in Halo, Jenkins had control for the rest of his painful life but not full control over the infection form stuck in his body
such a smooth plug in the stalkers part
Quality video!
Thanks!
I wonder if Combine has ability to extract souls of living being and doing something with it. Imagine getting tortured eternally without any way to escape. Truly terrifying.
Goddamn that's some 40k shit
Considering psychic powers are a thing due to the advisors, its plausible
I imagine though the soul would need to have some sort of use. The combine more focus on practicality with what they do.
I doubt it.
Commenting to comment because I love this channel. UA-cam is great because of channels like this.
I appreciate that! Best kind of comment
‘Oh, and Freeman! If you pull this off, I might just forgive you for that debacle at Black Mesa. You know the one I mean - involving a certain microwave casserole.’
At least my man finally got to terms with his fate
I love these videos
I love that you watch them
It's interesting that the stalker masks are shaped as the ones you see in horses, blocking their peripheral vision.
The fact that there are things considered "worse than deaths", actually sends shivers down my spine.
There are ways that are worse than death, and what can be worse than that? Well. This video proved it well.
Good lord, props to you sir.
In with zombification, slavement, isolation, stasis, stalker transformation or even fatalities there's no other horrible fate than losing ur beloved casserole D:
video: about the terrible fates in the half life universe
the video's first frame: Pick up that can
😂 😂
i feel that's why Larry has the Spiked hat. to hurt any barnacles trying to eat him
I have a theory for u. Since we know that Portal and TF2 share a universe because of a sapper (I think it's called the AP-Sap, I don't remember), I have thoughts about what would have happened to the mercs in the Half-life time line
Imagine being a combine soldier and seeing your buddies heads getting caved in by a drunk Scottish man with a pan
Imagine being a combine soldier and dying to an idiot with a shovel from above
What if the ending of portal 2 tells us that the Combine was taken of of earth? That huge area Chell is in is completely untouched... interesting
I really want to see what gameplay in HL:2 would be like with Chell
I'd love to see that too
Well there is at least a mod which lets you play with the portal gun. Clouse enough?
Maybe black mesa?
That was a joke haha- wait you actually went?
8:48 i kinda think that the combine shit is well over by the time chell is released from apperture science, because for apperture to become so abandoned it must've been at least 5000 years after the combine had reign
The casserole incident is easily the worst fate out of all of them.
100%
In my headcanon headcrabs were relased into the serwers by the combine they expected that risistance could form their bases there
That makes sense tbh. We know they used them as bio weapons against Ravenholm. That's my head canon too now
one note about the cat, there's actually an unused Beta asset of a human-cat hybrid, and not in the good way, more of a centaur-type hybrid but the cat became the top half
I think becomeing a headcrap zombie is the worst way to go becaus you're slowle becoming a gonome;
having that headcrap on your head sondenly become 2x the size it was, and (I belive it can happen) living long enoght to become a gonarch.
Just sounds gruesome.
Everyone can agree that the casserole incident is the worst… Jeff got nothing on it
Nothing at all
Which song is playing during the part "Barnacles" (starting 11:50). It sounds so nice but I couldn't find it
I can't believe a casserole is higher than literal radiation poisoning 😭
Gordon doesn't need to hear all of this - he's a highly trained professional 😂
the thing is
in portal 2 we see a wheat field stretching as far as the eye can see
portal 2 is also said to take place at least 50 thousand years after the events of portal 1, according to the developers
some people also said that the damage points to the game taking place 78 years after portal 1, but for all we know, a bunch of constructs might've been maintaining aperture labs while chell was in stasis
we even "see" nanobots which are supposed to maintain the place
besides, if the devs said that the game takes place in a very distant future, then the game takes place in a distant future
and the chance of every single half life character (maybe except for dog and everyone kept in stasis by g-man) being long dead by the time chell leaves aperture science with the companion cube is surprisingly likely
also, you'd think that aperture labs would've been claimed by the combine a long time ago, but there are no traces of the combine's presence in portal 2 afaik
I always Imagine how cool living in the half life universe would be but with little thinking I realised that would be horrible if you're not Gordon Freeman.
honestly, anything would be better than 2020+
Ikr. If we entered, we'd probably be eaten by a barnacle or turned into a Stalker
i'd argue it's also pretty terrible if you are
i love how all the fates is reasonable and then there's *casserole accident*
Freeman is just standing there like he doesn't have to deal with Breen's threat like it meant nothing to him
He's got to be strong. Can't let Breen see him weak can he
@@Skyrionn Silence makes a big difference
Barnacles were always described as an instant death as the tongue grabs by the head and snaps the neck. Gordon was always protected by his HEV suit so it couldnt do much more than just stick and pull. Larry getting grabbed by the ankle doesnt make much sense. The Wiki, as reliable as it is, also confirms they only go for the head/neck.
Alyx describes the stalkers in Ep1 and talks about horrific it is. Becoming a zombie from the headcrab is probably worse as you're aware of everything, its like being in a coma where you can hear and feel things but not react.
I feel like all the worst fates are the ones where you stay alive and maintain consciousness, suffering the entire way through. Stasis, while probably lonely and getting hit with the existential crisis that you dont exist in the timeline eventually, probably isnt very painful. Cant imagine you're aware of sitting in a timeless space, it probably just feels like sleeping. Especially considering the vortigaunts entered the Employer's stasis to retrieve Gordon for Ep1.
Just finished ep2. Jeez. What a story, what an end.
What is the music for the barnacle section I’ve already looked through the audios used but I must’ve missed one please tell me what it is
Scyrionn Videos are love. Scyrionn videos are life.
The casserole incident touches me the most :(
PS: I'm glad you got a better G. Freeman playermodel!
Barnacle's tongue is not sticky, but in fact are really strong. Usually they kill the victim by eating them but sometimes even quicker if they strangle them to death.
I wanted to say the worst case scenario for a barnacle grabbing you (I'll let you visualize the ankle crunching and body contortions, don't omit the screaming) but headcrabs are... well.
- If a headcrab attaches to your head, it would use its beak to break your skull. You would feel this, and likely fall unconscious as your brain was exposed to the elements. But you would not stay that way for long.
- In addition to mutating your body, with all the horrible effects from that being ignored (you know what they look like, you can visualize the process) the headcrab also had special tendrils hidden inside of its "mouth".
- These tendrils would violently interface with a host's brain. They would pierce the brain and latch onto very specific parts of it. This would give the headcrab multiple options to control its host. I'll list some:
1: being able to control consciousness, headcrabs obviously prefer their hosts to be conscious at all times, with very rare exceptions such as energy conservation.
2: being able to control pain responses. The headcrab directly interfaces with your nervous system, that's how it makes you move, but this comes with the addition of controlling how much pain you're feeling. High pain means more subservience, because...
3: if the host performs a task properly, the headcrab would reward them with periodic dopamine rushes, pleasuring the brain of their host by feeding it chemicals. If the host resisted, it would do the opposite. You ever experience having your foot blowtorched? Or having an abscess the size of a fist in one of your molars? The headcrab can "share" that experience with you, for as long as you take to accept its orders.
4: worse yet, headcrabs aren't actually that smart. They don't know how to distinguish inability from disobedience. Human bodies decay after all, and headcrabs don't really like that. If it gave you an order that you were physically incapable of following, it would give you the most painful sensation pretty much permanently. If the headcrab eventually puts 2 and 2 together, it unlatches, causing you to die. But that's not the worst...
5: any disobedience (inability included) stuck with the headcrab. It saw you as "stubborn", and in return, it would not give you dopamine for obeying it. Instead, it would consistently punish you unless you were following orders, until your mind (or what's left of it) is completely broken to the point of not even caring about dopamine. But don't worry, you'll always experience the pain.
With this, I think headcrabs being the worst fate of all is an obvious choice. Being able to control pain like that puts it at the top. Nothing can be more painful than a headcrab infection. The longer you live, the longer it lasts... Now, I'm sure there has to be even 1 host out there that has formed a bond with his little parasite, but then again, they're not that smart. It really is like forming a relationship with a spider. Not getting bit is the peak of your perks.
