- Half-Life is home to so many interesting characters. Some of these were extremely mysterious, and Colonel Odessa Cubbage was one of these. He is one of the few people to have interacted with the G-Man. What was discussed during this meeting is completely unknown, but it was very likely something to do with his war against The Combine.
What was the real story behind the man that ran New Little Odessa? What connection did he have to the G-Man? And why was he disliked in secret by the rest of the resistance? In this video, we explore the lore and story behind Odessa Cubbage in the Half-Life series.

I assume you mean in terms of evil so i would say gman as he has ability to avoid causing planetary destruction yet followed his employers orders, of course who to say he even has a boss and he's just using it as an excuse for his actions.

Things heating up in the Odessa fandom..
The fact that he is able to provide seemingly useful training to people he was responsible for makes me think maybe he does have a military background. The fact he avoids conflict makes me think he may value his own life and "skills" above those that are below him. His character seems like a jab at leaders who may not be willing to get their own hands dirty but who do actually have good leadership skills that make them valuable.

Will that make sense because Warriors even if they can't fight on the battlefield their minds are still just as useful also take into account that if he was giving orders on the battlefield he would probably be targeted as a hvt immediately
Former military, became a security agent after his time. It's plausible
Odessa Cubbage is a very interesting character just for the combination of his small presence and interaction with the GMan. Valve for whatever reason decided they needed to make a completely unique character for this specific part of Highway 17, rather than use an already existing rebel model like every other point in the game, before and after encountering him. He is one of the _only_ few people to have encountered the GMan out of the main cast of characters. Something tells me there's more going on behind that man's silly British accent than what we have been led to believe. I hope his character is explored somewhat more in a future Half-Life game.
13:31 Also, I want to add, there's that rebel during the start of the strider rocket battle in HL2 Episode 2 going over the list of plans using male_07's model who serves a similar role to Odessa Cubbage, even having a sort of exaggerated, fake accent. That leads me to believe that Odessa Cubbage was originally supposed to appear in Episode 2.

I'd like to add that well Odessa was in the beta as Odell who was apart of the borealis chapter before he was cut. Which leaves me to believe that Odessa was just a model they had lying around that they wanted to use then they realised that "Hey you know what could be cool for when you get the rocket launcher, if we had funny dude introduced it to us" "you know we could use Odell's model for that character" and they just went yeah and spruced up Odell to be Odessa. that's my just opinion though
@@andrewdrawsstuff Yeah that's definitely it, he was a very prominent character in earlier iterations, and his role kept getting changed and pared down until they ended up with him making a single non-sequitur appearance
@@andrewdrawsstuffyeah I have a feeling a lot of these kinds of gaming mysteries are just due to the iterative nature of game design. Though still I could see them working it into the lore. Imagine if he was a captain but not in the army and instead was captain of the Borealis before it disappeared. It would be a neat tie in to the original character and explain his reluctance to be seen by the combine.
If I recall correctly, when asked if she was the daughter of Eli Vance, Alyx joked sarcastically that no, she was the daughter of Colonel Cubbage. And it always seemed to me that the tone of Alyx's sarcasm set Cubbage up to be rather dubious before we ever met him.

He seems like a coward though, he likely deserted his squad behind while defending London and somehow escaped, putting up no fight which would make sense on why we didn't see him during the gunship attack.
@@user-po7fy9lk4lTo be fair. As a resistance leader (Just local not actual leaders like Kleiner or Gordon but just a station commander, I guess) he would be an HVT to the combine.
Cabbage and people like him serve a rather useful role so long as you can see past the lies. Cabbage managed to build and maintain a community and even if he was a coward people never challenged him. They simply followed orders. He is a beacon that can draw people to a location with purpose.
I do believe he was really important in the grand scheme of things - even if he did make up a few lies

I like to imagine Cubbage was a HECU soldier who escaped black mesa before the Black Ops and Nuking got there. His family just happened to be immigrants so he picked up on a strange blend of accents.
I also like to imagine hes the one responsible for the 'Yore Dead Freeman' graffiti in Half Life 1 because its funny to me and G Man was talking to him to tell him not to be mad or harbor any grudges to Freeman because hes important to his employers and a great help to the resistance right now.
Hes still absolutely lying about his rank and importance though.
That'd be a backstory I'd love to be canon.

My guess - Cubbage ended up with the name Odessa half by accident.
He has this lovely little settlement/base on the coast, its named after the biggest East European coastal city that he know of (Odessa). Resistance members directing people down the highway say "Stop off at Odessa". Someone calls the base, Cubbage answers, "This is Odessa".
Like medieval nobility, he's been in authority over one place for long enough that the land and its ruler are synonymous - Who rules Wessex? The House of Wessex. What do we call the King of Norway, a foreign monarch, while we talk politics at court? Norway. Who commands New Little Odessa? Odessa.
wow i like this theory, it makes sense to me! I think this'll be my headcanon too
Something very strange is that no other rebels mentioned Odessa meeting with a strange man, despite we can see a number of outdoor patrols through the telescope. Therefore, this leads to me theorizing that G-man would only appear to be G-man-like to people he wants his identity (despite how little even these people know about him) known, and to anyone else, including possibly Odessa himself, he was talking to some other rebel.
I thought that was odd too. I'm hopeful that if we do get another HL game, we'll a continuation of his story

Crazy, I feel like Odessa and Grigori are opposites. Odessa is a dude who doesn’t do much but tells a lot about himself (which is mostly presumably false), but Grigori doesn’t really say much about himself at all but the man does everything
I always kinda assumed G-man provided N.L.O. with the rocket launcher, and possibly warned them about the incoming attack.
With that in mind, it would mean that the only reason he met with G-man was because he happened to be in charge of the outpost, so it was on him to arm Gordon with the rocket launcher. Could (and would) have been literally anyone else.
“Damn, Mister Cubbage is about to be alerted that Eli Vance was captured, I have to persuade him not to take action as he would be completely capable of destroying entire Nova Prospect on his own ruining my schemes.”

I want these to happen if there will be a Half Life: Shepard game.
The intro of the game is that Shepard is still in the helicopter realm and he remembers the times that Gman always visited their headquarters and he is always talking to their superiors... and then suddenly, he heard the voices of the combine soldiers and something lighted up like a box and this is the vault that was used to imprison G-Man in Half Life: Alyx .. he heard the voices of the combine soldiers like this "it's him! capture him !" , "we need to capture him at any cost", they are capturing G-Man using the vault and those voices are heard by Shepard in the realm and he see a vague images of the combine soldiers capturing G-man .. and after they locked gman in the vault, there was a small crack or small portal appeared where Shepard was.. because of the G-man's captive , the force that keeping Shepard unable to move has been weakened and Shepard was freed and able to move again and then suddenly multiple portals comes out from every direction in the realm where Shepard is being freeze .. and Shepard was just staring at the small portal near him that came out and thought to approach it and he got absorbed by it and he blocked out ..( like what happened to Freeman when the Resonance cascade happened .. the screen blocked out and then teleported to xen). When Shepard woke up, he first saw the big xen crystal next to him .. and surrounded by people wearing tribal clothing as if they were worshiping or praying in front of the big xen crystal .. the small portal that Shepard entered was going or connected to the big Xen crystal that where it was prayed by the tribe .. Shepard was teleported to the continent that looks like Africa with tribe living in a big cave like a big city and the combine forces can't track them .. this tribe are praying together in front of the big xen crystal.. this tribe tamed the half life 1 aliens and the aliens became their helpers to survive.. just like the Bullsquids they made like horses because their legs are strong and because they also run quite fast and also the houndeyes they are like the dogs and alerting everyone if there's something suspicious entering their place or hideout.. and they also have vortigaunts with them who are also praying in front of the xen crystal.. and when they are all praying altogether, suddenly the big xen crystal lit up and Shepard come out or teleported in there .. they think that Shepard was sent to help them and this will be the adventure of Shepard xD .. (Sorry for my bad English xD)
In Africa chapters Shepard will meet some kind of Freedom Fighters and they have with them one of the survivor of the Black Mesa incident and he is Doctor Walter .. and they have also Vortigaunts .. Doctor Walter telling Shepard that he got separated from Dr. Rosenberg , Dr. Simmons and Barney because while they are escaping, the 7 hour war just started... and combine army invaded the Earth . The Tribe and the Freedom Fighters didn't got notice by the combine because the Vortigaunts blocking all signals from outside the continent or outside their territory or headquarter because of that they are safe from combine invasion and the combine thinks that it's just an empty and an already destroyed country or place they just destroyed some of the cities in there .... but in turn because of the signal blocking , they have no idea what's happening outside the continent and they didn't receive any of the message of Dr.Kleiner, Eli and the resistance but after Shepard just got teleported in there , they think that it's time to stop the blocking of signals or whatever signals 🤣 and they think it's time to help the humanity
The villains in this Half Life: Shepard game will be these people/monsters:
1. The rival tribe that lives in the forest or maybe in other places on this continent.. they have this kind of ceremony or ritual that they put tamed headcrabs on the head of their people to make them stronger and fast.. they call this ritual "The Bond" or "The Fusion" (hahaha sorry I can't think of a better name for this ritual xD) they are making zombie headcrabs but not actually zombie because the human are still 70% conscious because they tamed these special headcrabs .. after the successful bond of headcrab on the head of the human, the human now will gain abnormal amount of strength and speed that they can jump higher or run faster but their speech is not that clear like they have difficulty in breathing. (Africa continent chapter)
2. Half Life 1 and race X aliens upgraded and enslaved by the combine empire: Like the Gargantua .. they are now shooting lava and the combine modified it's appearance to make it look cool 😎 and also the race X aliens Pit Drone . It's now looks terrifying and run fast now and shoots spikes really fast and it has poison that you will lose your health every second
3. Upgraded Combine soldiers some of them now are using jetpacks with upgraded guns. These combines will appear in the Europe continent chapters
4. One of the high ranking combine advisor or whatever high ranking creature in the form of a human just like G-Man will visit Earth and he will be the final boss of the game .. Combine employer or high ranking officers have been worried because Shepard escaped G-Mans stasis and they are being paranoid that maybe Shepard will sabotage their plans (but they didn't know that G-Man planned this, maybe G-Man will betray the employers?) .. this advisor has a power like G-Man that he opens portals and send you there and he can summon soldiers just by opening door portals to fight you . And he can also send you to other dimension in the past and kill you there by influencing the timeline.
In this entire game , you will see a cameos of Gordon Freeman wearing HEV suit.. you know, just like G-Man, that you will see him in a distance in the entire game in different locations and when you see or spot him or go near him he will walk away and he will disappear .. but why Gordon ? Maybe that Gordon is from the future ? And he stole G-Man's power or maybe G-Man gave it to him? G-Man will not be a cameo because he is being imprisoned in the vault but he will only appear in the last scene... And maybe Gordon now is visiting timelines now to influence the past or the events in that timeline? Maybe Gordon, G-Man and the Employers are doing a war of timelines xD hahaha .. and in Europe chapters Shepard will meet Father Grigori .. Shepard will help Grigori to save and rescue civilians .. and they will take their separate ways when they are finally safe and father Grigori telling Shepard that they know a safe town called Ravenholm and father Grigori and other civilians will go there ( maybe in hl2 Father Grigori loses his mind because he sees all of the people he care turning into headcrab zombies and he has no other choice but to kill them)
After Shepard defeated the final boss , the final boss is about to explode just like Nihilant when it got defeated by Gordon and the air is cracking near Shepard like it's opening multiple crack portals and it's showing different timelines. In one of this portals, you can see a cameo of the Mystery woman (the woman from HL:A that's talking about moving the box) and also there's a crack portal and you can see a cameo of Chell and also a crack portal with the HECU soldiers fighting the Hl1 aliens in the black Mesa and also a crack portal showing Otis survived the nuclear explosion because he's in some kind of bomb shelter something like that .. maybe some scientists in BlackMesa created a very non destructive shelter like that in case some explosion happens in Black Mesa 🤣... and also a crack portal showing Gordon and Vortigaunts just staring at him ..
After you beat the final boss, after all of that portals just appeared, G-Man will appear and he will get Shepard again and he will send himself and Shepard to another dimension.. the G-Man that took Shepard after beating the final boss is one of the G-Man that separated from the original G-Man in the ending of Half Life Alyx (when G-man is talking to young Alyx and he split himself into multiple G-Man in the ending scene of HLA)
G-Man will talk to Shepard like this
"Corporal Shepard , we meet again arghhhgaghhj (difficult breathing xD) blah blah blah blah" .. like that 🤣 Maybe G-Man will use Shepard against Gordon or to help Gordon ?
Shepard isn't canon. Especially after Valve canned Return to Ravenholm. Sucks.
Cubbage isn't neither a liar or a survivor imo, but a leader, he values his life and skills, and knows NLO only survives because of his knowledge and tactics, seeing his men as competent bodies, and relying on their competence while he relay orders and reports to Lighthouse and Bridge Points. He could've totally been ex military turned security guard and escaped the war.

He probably had a brief a military service before leaving and taking up a job as a Campus Security Guard until he was eventually pulled back into service for the 7 hour war and somehow surviving that. I think the reason he doesn't get directly involved in battle is because he saw what happened to his peers after the 7 hour, most if not all got turned into Stalkers and he wants to avoid that fate at all costs even if it means looking a bit cowardly.

Theory on Cubbage that I have is that he used to work in Black Mesa as a security guard (The jacket he had being one that he kept from his first job.) He was never a fighter but more a strategist and planner, Someone that knew where and when to put his forces. I honestly think that he got the rank probably as a joke around Black Mesa. and after the rebellion took back City 17 He may well have been a part of the force that went after the borealis.

I agree. He could have 100% been one of the reused rebels. His model was used before for the beta though so I'm just assuming that they gave it to him

Honestly I felt like Odessa was and alien or some kind of informant. For Gmans employers to keep tabs on the resistance and combine. The reason he never went out was because his blood was a different color and if he was shot his coverage would be blown. He made everything up because he didn't know how humans worked.

I love that within 10 minutes of getting the launcher, Cubbage had somehow managed to lose and scatter the rockets from the convenient crate the G-Man almost certainly gave him all over his base’s grounds like discarded soda cans

Adrian Shepherd being sidelined is probably the greatest injustice to a game character I've ever seen. Shepherd may not have been *the* main character, but it felt like he had a bigger impact on the story overall, being a part of most of the events happening in Gordon's periphery.
I really wish Gabe would get off his butt and get the band back together to make the third Half-Life. Or even Episode 3. Just...something with 3 in it, because Valve seems to be allergic to that number. At this point, I'd take a third-party studio making it. Just license it. *Something.*

Something i dont understand is why a random rebel that gives you a rocket launcher has an unusual model, like why? He doesnt really bring that much into the story and appears only once in the series
There's some behind the scenes stuff that is interesting. I may cover it one day
The history is pretty complicated, but basically, Cubbage's model was originally created for a beta character called Odell, a crewmember of the Borealis (which was just a normal ship operated by the resistance.) Odell would've followed the player through the ship to a submarine that would then be taken to Kraken base (the resistance headquarters at the time.) His model was pretty detailed because he had a role closer to Grigori's (recurring level character) rather than a generic rebel. The Odell character was completely removed from the game and this storyline was cut.
Separately, the gunship sequence here was being worked on. Originally, the rebel who gave you the RPG actually WAS supposed to be a generic "tough guy" character who tried using the RPG to take down the gunship but got killed, leaving the player to use it. However, the team decided that it was better for the RPG guy to give it away and stay in the basement, and he quickly evolved into being a "royal coward" (Marc Laidlaw's own words.) They reused the detailed Odell model and retextured it with a security guard jacket to create Odessa Cubbage, and had John Patrick Lowrie use an obviously fake British accent in the character's dialogue.
So overall, he wasn't really meant to be a serious character, just a small gag that got made because Valve had an unused character model to recycle.

I feel like I watched a very long time ago a concept for half life 2 around not exactly the borealis but ships and wreckages. Pretty sure the cubbage model is older than probably a handful of other models. The jacket and beanie on the boat matches in my opinion

I never knew Odessa was such a"fishy" guy! I always respect his character so much. I didn't knew he lied about his "accomplishments", this completely changed how I view him now. And the part about him hiding from battles makes sense. I also never noticed it was Odessa who was talking to the G man in that Easter egg. Most likely the g man was giving Odessa instructions to assist Freeman? In the recent valve documentary they did confirm the g man is the "big bad behind all this" right? I always knew the g man is a wolf in sheep's clothing, must likely a "shu' ulathoi". The G man might be a recruiter for the combine? Love the Half life lore
When they said that I think they meant that he was the big bad because he caused the black mesa incident. It seems his intention the entire time was to use Gordon to gain control of XEN and to bring the combine to Earth. But he's also clearly anti-combine. So I believe once again he's just using humanity to destroy the combine on behalf of his mysterious employers
He really does sound like he's putting on some kind of act the whole way through. When you show up he just greets you with "Oh hello, now where was I", treating Gordon's arrival as trivial so he could get information about the RPG across. But then later in the same scene he addresses Gordon by name, so he knew who he was and the reputation Gordon holds. Most other characters in the game that know of you do nothing but give you their undivided attention because to them you're their hero, their greatest hope. But the way Cubbage kinda dismisses you, even when he occasionally compliments you, it's like he's aware there's something bigger going on than just Gordon vs the Combine
He did put on a convincing British accent. Have to give him credit for that.

I personally like to think that Odessa Cubbage was an ordinary guy that GMan was interested in when he was much younger just like Freeman who had proven himself to GMan during the 7 hour war. Judging by his looks he seems mid 40s-50s so I'd suspect he was likely younger and maybe had been in his older 20s at the time.
Maybe he was one of the candidates that was picked up by GMan and after GMan revealed himself to Odessa he could've been boosted up into the ranks of the resistance by the mutual fiend himself. I can't say if he's british or not or if that mustache is real, but the only thing I do know is that he might have a son named Cody Cubbage, who hated his name.

Odessa is only essential by providing Freeman with the rocket launcher. Without this Freeman would not have survived against the gunships on his venture. This starts with the N.L.O. defense, the Lighthouse battle, the Nova Prospect fight which creates an entrance for Freeman, and the resistance against the Striders guarding the Citadel. This is why G-Man provided Odessa with the launcher and the intel required for Freeman.

G-Man warns Odessa about the incoming gunship and incoming Gordon Freeman. G-Man provides Odessa with the RPG and instructs this RPG is for a Gordon Freeman who will soon arrive moments before the gunship.
Could be possible that Gman saw this man (allegedly a coward, as he stays inside) and gave him a piece of information, a rocket launcher and ordered to give instructions in exchange for a bit of fame among his fellow rebels? After all, all of the Gman does is checks on Gordon and give as little help he sees Necessary, for example, give a weapon that Gordon doesn't have yet (and that possibly couldn't survive without it) If you think this is the case too, remember that everything that Gman offers, doesn't come for free.
Actually there was a meeting in resistance HQ with G-men and they decided that every story need typical "Englishmen" but as Gordon show up sooner than expected they could not find any, so they check files of available personel and found out that Cubbage could do funny voices so they send him to meet Gordon and pretend to be Englishmen, and local resistance member didn't knew him and that's why they where suspicious, especially after G-men showed up to check if he could really do English accent.
