Phil Collins - Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, The End (1998)

- the Gentleman you ask about is George Martin. He produced the Beatles which is a good thing to have on a CV !!! Before that he produced The Goons and others. I'd known George for many years and during an interview with him for a TV series he was doing, he mentioned that he was going to put the Beatles stuff on CD, and it would be the last time those tapes would be heard as they were. I couldn't resist asking if I could come
and have a listen....so I went to AIR studios, above Oxford Circus, and heard their multi-tracks for the first and last time. Yesterday, Ticket to Ride, Help.....paradise. When he put each fader up separately (and there was only 4 of them !!!)... each track had one or two instruments on them and you could hear the guys coughing etc. Anyway to get back to the point, he was making what was to be his last album. His hearing has suffered over the years and this was to be the last one. He asked the people he liked to pick songs of the Beatles to perform. I chose, after discussing it with him, Golden Slumbers, which has the little drum solo in it. He came out to France where we were recording DITL, and we did it all in a day. He'd say..."this is what George sang..." and "this is what Paul did.."it was quite magical. The album is called "IN MY LIFE" and there was a documentary made... don't know if that is available, though I have a copy. When I think of these things I've been able to do in my career, I'm very touched that I've managed to work with some of the greatest musicians, writers, producers of our time. I never forget how lucky I am. (2005)

Thank you for sharing. Love Phil`s songs.
thanks
Many comments I noticed are comparing this to the Beatles version. I am sure Phil Collins is not trying to outdo the Beatles. I think he is just celebrating their brilliance. Very cool interpretation of the song. He is a musical genius in his own right.
Dan Carroll Martin asked him to do it. It was his last production
Not as good as the original version Paul McCartney is a better singed than Phil collins
But this is like trying to colour in Guernica. It invites comparison but can never, ever compare to the original.
Anthony Holmes phil collins is good but this song I agree with you.
Sos one way
Very few people can cover The Beatles, and make it worth listening to. Phil Collins is one of those few.
Dude was literally in the audience for the concert scene in A Hard Day's Night, so if anyone's qualified to cover The Beatles it's him.
They can make it worth listening and sound great just as long as they don't try to copy the fab four & and they put their own flavor into the song
Yep. Earth, Wind & Fire's "Got to Get You Into My Life" is another one.
Yeah Right !!! Collins sings through his nose, the Beatles used their mouths, absolutely no comparison !!!
he should just cover himself, that's fine
Great tribute. Phil was actually in the crowd of fans in the Hard Days Night movie He’s a lifelong fan.
Well, he was previously a child actor!
@@DG-mv6zw he wasn't, he said he was there because he loved The Beatles
@@checharas Both are true. He was there as a fan, but he was also a child actor (played the artful dodger I think I read). I think this is an excellent cover, and man he could play those drums!
@@paulraymond2252 He was asked to leave that stage production of 'Oliver!' because his voice changed. And VH-1 once located a 13-year-old Phil screaming at The Beatles in the concert scene.
@@checharas True
I like that he brought back the "1,2,3,4,5,6,7 all good children go to heaven" from "You never give me your money"
Lol. That was pretty cool
I'm picky about Beatles' covers but Phil Collins does this justice. Such a wonderful compilation of songs! RIP to the incredible George Martin.
Anca820 I was thinking that too. Sometimes a truly gifted artist sees a classic in a new way, and then we do too. Whole new dimension.
Its not a compilation those 3 songs are connected.
George Martin produced some amazing music at that time. As for picking talent he was amazing. A lot of good bands & singers ( eg Cilla Black) owe their success t that guy . He already was a well known name producing the really crazy Goon Show with Peter Sellars, Spike Milligan & Harry Seacombe . That was on BBC radio & was full on crazy, I loved listening to it as a kid & still do.

I'm just plain picky about what I allow into my ears. Phil, this is spot on marvelous!
I normally cannot stand other artists singing the Beatles songs, but I must say that Phil Collins did a great job here. both as a singer and a drummer. And with George Martin playing the piano and in the controls, it is almost an original version.
I agree with you all except i think its one of thr geates compliments and respect when someone covers your song. From garage bands to grammy winners
This was recorded for the George Martin tribute album!
What about The Analogues? ua-cam.com/video/BCG6faO1pjQ/v-deo.html
Wow!! Watching Phil Collins smack the drums is like drinking that perfect cup of coffee in the morning.... He is so brilliant and clean on the drums... It's indescribable the talented drummer he is!!!
Everytime I listen to this version I hear something new. I dare say as the song progresses his voice gets better and better, and it's not the engineering.
People focus on lead guitars....thats the way it is- but a good band is nothing without a great bass and drummer...not to mention of course rhythum guitar and VOCALS
Most bass players get very little credit unfortunatley...for the most part...unless they are the singer too
And studio bass work is now computerized unfortunatly....puts a lot of musicians out of work...same for drums...but thats also why a large percentage of songs out today are so much alike...just a simple track on the bass and drums. Not to mention vocals with auto tune...it just makes me sick. I like the personal feel of studio recording with a live feel
"One morning I receive a call from Sir George Martin. As part of him winding down his career he wants to make an album, In My Life, featuring new versions of some of his favorite Beatles songs. We’ve known each other for years but never worked together, so I’m thrilled to be asked. He and his son Giles fly over to France to a house I’ve rented to use as a studio to record my next album.
It’s decided that I’ll take on “Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers” from Abbey Road. First I play the drum parts, including the famous Ringo solo. We double the length of it, which George loves. Then we go about the vocal parts, full of close, three-part harmonies, with George saying, “This is what Paul sang…this is what John sang…” Working with this genuine musical legend and thoroughly lovely man is a treasured memory of mine."
What a talent...
Great work! This is just an unforgettable song.
Tom Pinks: What a comment!
Tom P, Good story, thanks ! I think even those of us who didn't grow up with the BeatLes love the heck out of their songs.
This is an excerpt from “in my life” a wonderful collection. Jim Carey, Robin Williams, Goldie Hawn..all doing Beatles songs in their own way under Sir Martin's direction.
Thank you for this great comment!
They had to give this one to Phil Collins. He has the vocal chops to handle all the parts, and it's the only Beatles song with a drum solo!
@William G Danson this guy here shows up Ringo on the drums
lol, there maybe a few other drum parts slash solo ya think..... ....rain, day in the life, strawberry fields...come together..cheese dude, what the f are you saying..? get over yourself..Ringo is the minimal monk drummer always adding to the song, as George does, never more or less, make the song better....he always does. even the strident Sgt Pepper is perfect...you have a problem. jdw...
He was their roadie for a time too.
Too bad Sir Martin couldn't have tried out Ardy Sarrof, betcha he could have REALLY "Nailed" it, Phil on drums, of course!!
@@timmynormand8082 How so? Ringo's drum part sounds the same.
I love how Phil did not change the fantastic arrangement of the original much while still taking a few liberties with the drum and guitar solos. Fantastic cover!
It wasn't up to Phil. He was asked by George Martin to join the project. Martin produced the song.
The liberties were actually taken by Martin himself in making the arrangement. And if anyone outside of the Fab Four themselves had the right to take liberties with Beatles music, he did.
No one can improve or change the perfection of Beatles songs even if they tried. That’s why they were geniuses
@@rockon416 I think Phil did it better... much better.
We are in an era similar to classical music (not trying to compare rock.. etc.) of reproducing the composers' intent but with improvisation where appropriate. I like that after listening to the original for so many years, this heightens while respecting the original experience. Love.
Great drummer and singer paying tribute to the greatest band in history. Loved him on the drums. Great job Phil.

+Glenn R He was the fifth Beatle , without him who knows
Well said.
Phil Collins you have no rite
Phil has EVERY rite......can you play the drums and sing?
Sorry to disagree, but I don't see what the point of this project was anyway. Anytime you reproduce music - and in my opinion - less superior versions of the original songs in this case, you leave people asking why. Phil does a fine enough job of singing and playing the songs EXACTLY HOW THEY WERE ORIGINALLY RECORDED - BUT WHAT IS THE POINT? Jim Carey doing I AM THE WALRUS in his comical voice - WHAT IS THE POINT? Now I have to admit, I am a Puritan when it comes to my rock and roll - DON'T F^CK WITH THE ORIGINALS! Comedians recreating these songs is completely blasphemous in my opinion. However, if I were completely being objective, these versions add nothing original. Haha, Jim Carey funny voice version - um, I'll pass. Robin Williams - who I have always loved as a comedian and very talented actor - complete fail and very bad career decision. I think he was very vocal on how insecure he was about doing this project, too bad he didn't follow his instinct on this one. To your point above, I CAN PLAY DRUMS AND SING, AND PLAY GUITAR AND SING, AND PLAY PIANO AND SING, BUT THAT DOES NOT GIVE ME THE RIGHT TO ARROGANTLY REPRODUCE ALREADY WORTHY VERSIONS OF SONGS I WILL NEVER IMPROVE UPON. These poor celebrities went beyond their limitations due to hero worship and certainly ego kidding them they were worthy. Lastly, Mary you are a complete FUKTARD for even thinking that Phil had any right singing the Beatles. Sorry, but I had to add this last part because you are a RE-tard - however, I have to admit I am a Phil fan - prior to him becoming the 80s clown prince of pop. Respectively yours...Jackie Walton.
Потрясающая "битловская классика" в исполнении замечательного певца и барабанщика Фила Коллинза! БРАВО!! / A stunning "Beatles classic" performed by the wonderful singer and drummer Phil Collins! BRAVO!!
I heard you the first time
While it may be true that the Beatles cannot be duplicated for obvious reasons, this version came very, very, very close.....An excellent cover. Thank you George Martin.
From the Get Back video, you see what rudimentary electronics and sound boards the Beatles had to work with. Compare to what you see in this video.
I agree bobpandoli7187
yah, but ironically the bit that falls flat is the drums. even multitracked, with many takes, it's a dry shell of the original.
Glad to see the 5th Beatle in this vid. George Martin.
He produced the album and was reponsible for getting all the singers involved.

@@nabe288 Behave, you're talking about a huge step up in talent and musical experience there..
Phil Collins voice is naturally beautiful for this song plus he played drums too. Extremely talented musician
I agree 👍.
Lovely and appreciated as a tribute. But his voice is not the most appropriated for this song since both have very different voices. Contrary to someone saying that Collins effortlessly sings this Beatles wonder, it is so noticeable he was making a great effort to reach the higher notes. But the thing to understand is that a homage is not to try to equal, much less to surpass, the original, but to thank those who did a classic, timeless song!
Phil , who is heavily influenced by Ringo, pays tribute to him and at the same time uses traces of his own iconic drummimg to show how and where it happenend and pays tribute to his own legacy . Genes..um.. Genius.
The very last line of their short but unparalleled official career was " the love you take is equal to the love you make". Eternal truth. God forever bless The Beatles.
Only short compared to a couple bands, Stones, Who etc. Other bands hung on too long.
Beautifully said. ❤️
Beatle Paul's words n chords Amazing! Add John George n Ringo to the tracks n George Martin's final mix, A MASTERPIECE! LOVE BEATLE MUSIC💖
God bless them
The love you take is equal to the love you make….
It's good, but what it shows above anything is how brilliant George Martin's orchestrations were for The Beatles. The combination of the amazing songwriting and equally amazing score was what made tracks like this so good. Truly the Fifth Beatle.
One of the Beatles best but Phil Collins does it proud . Credit where its due

How can anyone give a thumb down on this vocal by Phil Collins. Sheesh
Beatles' snobs. Can't appreciate that this is an top artist that was asked by GM to pay tribute and do an interpretation of the original, because they are basically cunts. It's partly why John left because Paul was way up his own arse.
awesome, I grew up with these guys, I was 10 in 1964...the complainers for wtvr reasons they may profess were not there.
Because people are ass holes….plain and simple unfortunately.
Maybe some people don't like it
The more I listen to these covers, the more I keep noticing how musically accurate Ringo's drumming was. These three songs in a row really adding a base line to the music, in stead of just plain rythm.
Phil’s version indeed is very good. I love it. It is a good tribute to The Beatles. There is no need to compare.
I wasn't sure I was going to dig this but holy shit his voice is beautiful on this
As much of a Beatles fan as I am, I never really listened to this song much until I heard Phil's rendition. In my opinion, Phil is one of the best vocalists in rock music.
Jacob Bonner_Yes. He is underrated for sure.
Phil does a good job, but Paul's voice on the original is so much more powerful that Phil's is here. Paul is the only person who can really sing this song like it is supposed to be sung.
Phil does ballads very well - he has a soft, pleasant and melodic tone. What he couldn't do well was the much more difficult and edgy early Genesis stuff. Also because Peter set a standard that nobody else seemed able to achieve.
I didn't say that I haven't listened to it; I said that it wasn't one of my go-to songs of theirs. We all can't be as much of a fan as you are.
And that my dear is why phil is a music legend...

So much love showing in how Phil sang his heart out in this cover. Great job Phil. 💟
Have you watched the anthologies by George Martin. He said he hey were not trying to copy the Beatles sound. That would have been impossible. Every one involved in these few songs gave their own version on each song. I love Jim cary's version of its am the walrus. The Beatles were magical. Four human beings who were involved in a fantastic journey that thrilled the world. I was 11 and it was a magical time. Even in South Africa everybody could relate to them. They were funny gorgeous and absolutely unique. And we still have their music I'm 67 now and they are basically all I listen to my grandchildren love their music. It's so pure and sweet. I miss John Lennon. I love his voice the most.

It was OK up to 3:44, but the extended drum solo is where Phil's strengths shine, and really gives this cover a lift.
Phil Collins is a legend like drummer!
+Fher Kenwood I play because of him and play left-handed like he does in a tribute to him.
Fher Kenwood Don't know if you ever heard him playing with the band Brand X. His ability on drums far outweighs his songwriting and singing. He's just sick! I've heard he hardly plays now because of back problems. Shame.
He's undeniably a very talented drummer (perhaps more technically gifted than Ringo) but it's strange that no one can 'thump out The End' like Sir Ringo does.
This has almost 3x the views as the original George Martin video (with Jeff Beck, Robin Williams, Celine Dion, Bobby McFerrin, Goldie Hawn and more). Amazing.
Well, perhaps it is because Phil clearly loves the Beatles and this was an inspired effort to honor them.

@@tonycook1624 I'm still reading his biography 😅
Read Phil’s biography, “Not Dead Yet”. You will change your mind about Phil. I went from “Yea, he is good, I like him” to OMG, this guy is awesome. One of my all time R&R’ers. I read his bio on the Queen Mary, crossing from NYC to the UK. I discovered the bio in the QM’s library. Got about 3/4ths through it on the QM. Had to buy it when we got back home to finish it. As we were “scouting about” London, we randomly got off the tube at an interesting looking small town to explore a bit. Turns out it was Phil’s neighborhood growing up. He describes it methodically in the book. What a coincidence. Speaking of coincidence, we also decided we want to see Abbey Road. Took the tub, then a bus or a 2 , then a short walk to get there. The closer we got, the more crowded it became. We were thinking “man, this place STILL draws a crowd”. Turns out, it was 50 years to the day of the infamous Beatles Abbey Road cover photo. They even had a Beatles recreation of the walk. I am a huge Phil Collins fan now, BTW. LOVED Genesis in the 70’s, but other than Peter Gabriel most of the band was incognito to me. I know much better know. And ALL of the band. Genius!
