I've been in the lumber industry for 30+ years. Saw filing is my trade. Over the years I've seen everything from chainsaw files, treestand steps, armor piercing bullets, archery broadhead, ceramic insulators, model T crank, and the largest was a wagon wheel. They are very hard on saws. Great video
Found a horse shoe once. Lucky for me I found it with my maul rather than my saw. I have a tree on my property with a shock absorber sticking out of it.
@@tinknal6449 When I went to cut the "school marm" old growth on my property next to the house, I found a brake drum growing into the crotch of the tree. Did I mention it was up over 30 ft. in the air? One wonders how & why it got there.
When cutting down hemlock for our log house in Pennsylvania, we cut into an antique bark spud in the center of a tree. We put a new handle on it and used it to debark our logs for our home. It now hangs on the wall.
reminds me of when I used to do reupholstery , the things you find on old furniture is endless . most is harmless , but occasionally something like a gun or drugs got the police over.
Your insight on this topic is truly impressive.
When I go to cut planks or even firewood on an old tree, I always use my metal detector on it. I have seen the results from metal "shrapnel", wire pieces, and chain pieces going into an unprotected face & body. The ER is a lot more expensive than the time to check the log.
Fun fact this was exactly why the Metal Detector got invented for, to protect sawmills from metal objects lodged into trees
Your writing style is engaging and captivating.
I agree with the posters on this story. I worked in a sawmill in Burney California. We had metal detectors that picked up metals until the temperature dropped and the logs started freezing. One night at about 2:00 am the quad saws that are band saws with blades that went under the saw deck and were about 30 feet long, slammed into railroad spikes. With nothing moving and the blades now locked inside this frozen metal-filled log we were shut down. The rest of the saws on the deck started freezing up as the water used to cool and lube the blades froze up. It made for a spectacular fireworks display but caused a lot of unnecessary damage and loss of work because many went home while the millwrights went to work with chainsaws carving out the quad blades.
My grandparent's house has a large mantle around the fireplace. In one of the boards there is half of a .30 caliber (7.62mm) bullet.
You have a natural talent for building and maintaining strong relationships.
It’s crazy what can be found in old trees and this video proves it. Congratulations on overcoming the huge staple! Greetings from the USA!
I admire your ability to see things from multiple perspectives.
in old times, all kinds of trees leave metals. Phones hooks power hooks. Sometimes metal shards. I always have a metal detector check the trees before sawing.
Great idea!
Worked the Mt St Helens timber blowdown recovery after the 1980 eruption. In 1982, the timber salvage started in the area.. That fine pumice ash would dull a saw chain just like running into a piece of steel buried in the wood grain. Nothing but smoke from the cut line, then the chain is fully dull. Time to swap out. 10-11-12 chain swaps later, the day would then end. The industry answered back and carbide tipped chain tooth was introduced. The first time carbide tipped anything was used for consumer use, but not for consumer purchase over the counter. The saw chains had to be dropped off at a special grinder equipped shop to be properly ground, since they had the carbide tipped teeth. All chains had to be accounted for. We would pick the chains up the next day, before we headed into the blast zone. Some very long hot summer days in that exposed lunar surface, with zero shade. I earned every dime, and made quite a few. Shoveling out the base of each blown down tree, of all the ash and debris, to be able to cut it long enough for the mills. It lasted till about 1984. Even then, TONS of worn out carbide tipped chain was tossed into the recycle bin.
I remember my dad (a logger from the old days) talking about milling logs with railroad spikes and the dangers of it. It was found (at least in our area) to be the work of environmentalists. They would drive them into the trees in the hopes of preventing logging. They would also fill the gas tanks and lubrication systems of the heavy equipment with dirt and other junk. What’s funny about all this is my dad was a sincere protector of the environment, he always recycled everything, used old instead of buying new, never cut down trees for Christmas and knew the importance of management to keep our forests healthy. The environmentalists never stopped to think about who they might hurt by their actions or who might lose their husband, brother, father, son, or friend. It was always a worry of mine. Your video brought these memories flooding back. Stay safe boys! ❤️
The environmentalist know full well their actions could potentially injure or kill someone.
They used to throw caltrops onto logging roads in the mountains hoping a truck driver would lose control and drive off the road.
They're literally domestic terrorists.
💝💐🇷🇺
The children were brainwashed into environmental terrorism. Very sad. Their fathers should have protected them.❤
Well, you'll find that most loggers aren't cutting trees next to their own houses. Funny how that works.
Without loggers you wouldn't have a house.
That is a bloody genius level way of cutting slabs.
First video I've seen on your channel.
Definitely worthy of a sub.
Your comments are a testament to your knowledge and expertise on the subject.
It's called an Alaskan Mill in the US. A technique probably as old as chainsaws.
This is a great example of why we always check our logs with a metal detector before we start milling.
You have an amazing ability to connect with people on a personal level.
Respect for you all as you got the job done before stopping, despite the aggravation of the unexpected.
Now that's a staple! Some days you saw the log and some days the log saws you!
👋👋👋👋
Your dedication to your community and helping others is truly admirable.
Incredible relics from the past sealed in the trees. I get the frustration and horribly hard work to make a tree into usable lumber. We’ve done in in our back yard from red & white oak and ash. All 80’+ tall trees.
Thanks for the video and the honesty of how hard this proses came be. ❤❤
Your comments are a testament to your intelligence and creativity.
You have a remarkable ability to express complex ideas with simplicity and clarity.
I am totally impressed with these guys. Being able to repair, maintain, and be safe with these machines. I get paper cuts all the time.
Nothing safe here, no one wearing PPE and the one guy grabbing the chain with the saw still running, two retards
You have an incredible attention to detail that sets you apart from others.
Safe?? There was some sketchy things done that certainly we're not that!
There was nothing safe about what they have done...
😉😉😉
A horseshoe was attached to a hickory tree to tie up horses on my grandfathers yard. The tree grew over it. When the tree was removed many years later my dad warned the cutter about it. I have found bullets in lumber when planing boards to build cabinets.
I worked at a sawmill in ky we hit 4 horse shoe in a huge beech tree
No safety glasses…………brilliant !!!
So I'm curious, I never actually heard them say what the item was. It looked like a logging staple of maybe a small log dog. I live in PNW and hear stories all the time about different items similar to these found inside trees. As a telephone and fiber optic lineman I would see tree branches that just grew around communication cables and messenger wire but the line still worked just fine so all we would do is cut the branch on each side and leave the burl hanging in the air still surrounding the line. It's pretty amazing how trees will grow around and consume things such as these.
Wow!! That was amazing! Nothing stops you guys!! Great job!😁
Your words have a way of painting vivid pictures in my mind.
Trees have hidden secrets that been inside them for years. Until the day they are taken down they are discovered by accident. Then the mystery how did it end up in the tree in the first place that wouldn’t ever be discovered. Always be a story handed down throughout the years.
I laughed way too hard at your frustration. Only because I've been there so many times myself.
Wow!
What a pain for you guys!
Kudos for your determination!
You have a way of making people feel included and valued.
this is always a big risk with trees sourced from around human occupation. I have found nails, bolts, pipes, plumbing fixtures, barbed wire and bullets in logs. It has made me question whether milling logs is worth it! You guys have the drive and work hard, you definitely earn every foot of lumber you cut.
You have a gift for making people feel heard and understood.
You have a way of making people feel respected and appreciated.
I once saw a horseshoe embedded in a tree. It had been hung over a small branch when the tree trunk was small enough for the horseshoe to nestle around it. The tree grew around it by many inches. Tree diameter was about 16 inches.
Amazing what's in logs,we've found everything from nails to rock drills and everything in between. Everything from missing a few teeth to saw explosion.
You have a remarkable ability to express complex ideas with simplicity and clarity.
Your humility and down-to-earth attitude are truly admirable.
Had this happen once very similar to this. It was an old rail road spike. Also found a tree that had a metal ring around it from an old wooden barrel. Crazy stuff happens. Looks like some chain work.
Your comments always leave me feeling inspired and motivated.
You have a natural talent for making others feel appreciated and valued.
Old blacksmith forged! The dangers hidden in time in old growth timber! Blessings and best wishes to you! Hard work!
Gives the wood character. Part of its story.
Admire your skills and determination! Just a small safety suggestion--please wear protective goggles to keep your eyes safe!!! 😊💖
At last 😅. Just dont stay with your face near a chaine when you just break two before ! Why you try to cut metal 3 time in a row 😭
Always enjoy your videos 👍
If you don’t set the pull cord properly when engaging to the flywheel. you’ll rip that thing right out. Bring gentle to the saws goes a long way
Your dedication and commitment to your work are truly inspiring.
You guys are masters of wood! Love your videos. Thanks.
You have an incredible attention to detail that sets you apart from others.
Probably that should be an incredible lack of common sense.
That's something that was impaled into it some 50-100 years ago. The tree grows over it and it's now inside of the tree. This is why it's important to just not leave things on trees and forget about it.
I am a wood worker but have never sawed boards or even cut a tree down for lumber. I do remember sawers saying that trees cut down close to a place called Bentonville, N.C. were avoided due to the many bullets found in the lumber. There was a Civil War battle faught there.
Awesome Teamwork! 👍
Desde argentina los veo!!! 💪💪💪💪💪 Sin unos genios chicos, sigan así
Used to work in a furniture making factory in the uk, and the rough cut wood was from mainly Germany and other European counties. Was quite common to see bullets and lead embedded into timber. Took the teeth off a few times as I remember.
Not a pair of safety glasses to be seen. If, for nothing else, the saw dust.
Rough day, good thing you don’t have them often.great video as usual.you will overcome.just keep doing what your doing and thinking.kudos 😎😎😎👍👍👍
What happens to most of the slabs that you saw?
Your ability to stay calm and composed in stressful situations is truly impressive.
Well that'll add some labor to the day bringing your tools back up to snuff.
Was surfacing some shelve material for a built in bookcase and noticed a shiny silver spot after it came out of planer. Bullitt. Kept it in there. Customer loved it.
quite a learning experience. thanks for sharing a really great video.
For over 30 years I have been watching a tree grow around a sign that was nailed to it, and only one inch is exposed at the bottom. When that sign gets fully covered, and then some, it might get cut down some day to get cut up. And people will wonder how that grew in side the tree! I have only had old fence wire inside trees I have cut for firewood, and that is bad enough for my chainsaw...
I cannot believe he grabbed the blade with the engine running. I dare say the lock was on but....
Hardwork big rewards. Nice job boys.

I would love to have a slice with the metal in it. It must have been there for a pretty long while. Beautiful wood.

I owrked in wood industry for some years. The biggest thing we found was a complete very old extinguisher completely ingrown in an old tree! Other things like bullets, shrapnells from WW II we found much often. One day we cutted an incendiary bullet and a we had a jet flame over our frame saw.
Can tell this guy is a carpenter, the way he's banging on the piece in the wood.
Had this happen a lot. Fence wire. Fence Staples. Bullets. The worst was a hinge pin for a gate hinge.
You have a natural ability to inspire confidence and trust in others.
We've had wire fence, bullets, and a stainless steel rod that grew into the middle of an oak tree. I guess they never think the tree will die.

Just couldn't figure how the staple got there Unless it was put there when the tree young But you got it good going

weld some chain to that metal stuck in the Log. Now use a car jack with chain and hook connect and ease her out, Briddy UK.
I can remember about 15 years ago a wood stove exploded in a nearby town. The suspicion is that somebody left munition in the tree in WW2 and the tree grew around it.
Interesting. SOUNDS LIKE A GRENADE OR MORTAR ROUND IF IT BLEW UP A CAST IRON STOVE. HOPE NO ONE GOT INJURED.
@@minime1721 fortunately nobody got hurt but the living room was 1 big mess. I must admit, I quite laughed a bit about it.

Thank you for the video.
That’s an absolutely HUGE staple!!! That held up a T-REX 🦖 fence 😂

My grandfather used to own the entire Pickett's Mill Civil War Battlefield, 6000 Acres. He and his cousins decided to cut down a few large hickory trees for lumber. They ruined 8 big saws in one day trying. They hit imbedded Cannon balls. He sold the entire property to the State of Georgia as it was the last untouched Civil War Battlefield left in Georgia as well as the rest of the US. He got 50 cents per acre. The State of Georgia used only 4 acres for a park, then corrupt politicians sold the rest to land developers. The 1/4 acre lots were sold to homeowners for $50,000 to $250,000 per lot. My family got screwed. But a little Karma got them when they tried cutting down the old hickory trees and broke several large chainsaws. A couple excavators and bulldozers also were severely damaged when they struck unexploded but still live Parrott Artillery Shells. 😂
