So many retired aged Nigerians hiding in Lagos and Abuja or even whatever foreign country they find themselves in, afraid of all the insecurity. Plus still no light, bad roads, poor hospitals, SMH. The simple truth is the only true home of an Igbo man is his hometown. This is true for other Nigerians too but more so for the Igbo. We have a very weird sense of country in Nigeria where the only parts that we belong to is first and foremost our hometown and secondly our state of origin. Experience has taught the Igbos to, if for nothing else, always have a place to run to when people start yelling at them to “go back to your state”. In Nigeria, just because you are Nigerian doesn’t mean you are from every part of Nigeria (I mean , on paper, you are). Customarily, your nationality is often circumscript to your town or state of origin. At any time, and for one reason or another, you could be invited to leave or evacuate any state that’s not your home state. That’s why the Igbos spare no expense to splurge on their village homes.
