I used to open Halo 3 on my Xbox 360 and host a custom zombies map, and no one would join, probably one of the most eerie experiences because the base map was sandbox, something about the claustrophobic inducing area, and lack of anything but sand, ancient buildings, and the towers in the distance made me feel both trapped and alone.
When someone would join, I would get all excited and say hello, and a lot of the time I would get somebody saying, "why are you here alone?" "Why don't you join someone else?" and sometimes no response and they'd leave. Very few people stayed to play.
The oddest thing about it was that I enjoyed the deafening silence sometimes, not sure why, but it was soothing.

Thanks for watching 😄I had a similar experience wandering around empty TF2/Garry's Mod community servers as a kid, and I can definitely relate to the feeling of someone joining and instantly leaving - That eerie silence in a virtual space is quite something and I too enjoyed the silence, depends on the person I guess, the absence of noise can indeed be soothing, and it's always fascinated me, how these games allow us to fully immerse ourselves in their virtual worlds and escape from the chaos of the real one.

Banger video buddy! I think about this kind of thing a lot, and while being alone can be comforting and serene, it can also be sad or even terrifying sometimes. I think we as a people crave being around others and the thought of being TRULY alone can be so jarring, especially now when we're more connected to others than ever. It's such a conflicting feeling.
Also I'm so glad someone else talked about SOMA cause it deserves all the love. It was probably the most impactful horror game I think I've ever played it presents so many emotions and brings up a lot of existential questions. I also love the bits about liminal spaces cause I'm a sucker for those.
Keep up the great work man!

Thanks for the watch, brother. It means a lot to me. It's a conflicting feeling for sure. I'm quite introverted by nature and enjoy my own company, almost like a modern-day hermit. I'm not sure if it came across well in this video, but I've only ever experienced true loneliness in these games, and it's genuinely terrifying.
"Soma" was the game that made me feel it firsthand, and it's easily the most impactful game I've ever played too. In my opinion, it's one of the best-written games out there. It's certainly Frictional's current magnum opus and I say that aware of how critically acclaimed "Amnesia: Dark Descent" is, I love Soma and was thrilled to finally talk about it in a video.

It absolutely seems like it, and I think I understand. It really does feel like you're one of the last things left in this dying ghost of a world. I agree that it's maybe their best game despite the massively influential Dark Descent. It's just a much more thought provoking game imo.

Exactly, It's just a much more thought provoking game. As great as the original Amnesia is at being creepy and all, I can't shake the feeling that it doesn't really leave you with much to chew on. The story is there for you to quite literally piece together, the setting is unnerving and the monsters are terrifying, no doubt ~ but once those credits roll, all you've got is a cool (creepy) experience, nothing more.
Now, Soma, on the other hand, had me sitting there, not just thinking about the game, but pondering things in my own life. Soma feels like one of those projects that Frictional Games might have had in their back pocket for a while, waiting until they had enough experience to truly make it shine. It's like how many writers, directors, and creators across various fields often hold onto what could potentially be their masterpiece. Why put your best idea out there right from the start, risking it turning out less than great due to inexperience, when you can wait and refine it until it reaches its full potential?

One game I felt captured the lonely vibe well was cry of fear (even if it is pretty edgy about it). Wandering the desolate streets of Stockholm while only you seem to be experiencing the horror as the rest of the world goes on is extremely isolating. In moments when the game slows down and you get really absorb how lonely it is. I also really appreciate the game for its multiple endings. Choices you make in the game determine if the protagonist chooses to process his feelings and trust others or not.
    *SPOILER*
In the end, if you get the good ending, the protagonist is not magically healed but rather accepting and hopeful. That feels very mature for the game.
I definitely recommend it if you have not played it

Cry of Fear is a good one, definitely edgy. It kinda feels like a more explicit version of Silent Hill to me. I never finished the game, though. I think it had something to do with the gameplay. But it definitely has that lonely vibe. I wish I had thrown in some gameplay footage for the video.

@@removedm buy a quest 3, then buy it there, it's an amazing experience, and it really gives you the freedom to do whatever you want! you can play guitar, smoke a cigarette, clean your guns, eat canned food, and even go for a hike! (The hike is very dangerous. For your safety bring at least one loaded firearm.)

@@VodkaDoge I'm currently a bit strapped for cash being a student and all. But absolutely, once I start working and have a stable income, investing in a good headset is on my priority list. Speaking of VR, an old friend of mine used to own a Valve Index. I recommended "Into The Radius" as his first game to try (excluding Half Life Alyx, of course). Needless to say I've been waiting to play that game for a long time.
