Prof. Wolf you are the most informative historians on the history of labor on the internet today. In the end the CIO was subordinated to the democratic party, in a classic trade off: the renunciation by labor of its independent power in exchange for the right to place economic demands upon corporations, known as economism. The U.S. came so close to becoming a socialist country only to roll back all the reforms of the new deal and put the country back in the hands of the oligarchy and the imperialist corporatocracy. Your well thought out concepts on how to implement cooperatives are crucial to the survival of human civilization because finance capitalism is literally destroying the planet.
The question is can the people of this planet unite and stop the combined corporate RAPE AND PILLAGING of OUR MOTHER EARTH? IF HUMANITY IS UNABLE to redirect corporate destruction of mother Earth 🌍 THEN we as a species are indeed doomed to go extinct
@35:00 absolutely been there , done that. US companies built the best products in the world, paid good wages, which Americans spent on American products. Peoples were able to buy homes, create communities, better education. Corporations were rich, rich. Then the greedy, became inhumane , demonized greedy .
You seem to have missed the point Wolff was making. Whatever we win under capitalism will always be taken away. Regardless, the same capitalist government is who would "protect" the workers with such law.
Four consecutive pieces on my local CBS news were: -Minimum wage increase for fast food workers. -Auto workers may strike because their CEOs gave themselves a 40% raise last year. -Writers strike in LA picketed out front of Netflix headquarters. -And a local San Diegan in his 50s is homeless for the first time because he lived with his mother and she died and the bank took the home. A godamn ADVERT for anti capitalism
Wow that last one is a bummer. Wasn't there anything in place for the guy to continue the mortgage? I wonder if that sort of thing is possible in a will?
You are absolutely right. I'm a auto worker at one of the big 3 and, I'm what they call a tpt. I have been working for 12 years and I really don't have any rights. I cone to work more than 70% of the full time worker and I'm forced to work more hours than full time workers weather I want to or not. I refuse to roll over to full time and start of like I just walled off the street to work here. I would have to start over as a day one employee. They would not let me roll over all the years that I've worked there. I have other full time workers say well I had to start over but, what they fell to realize is that it still doesn't make it right. I'm not going to start over from day one and if have to leave that industry then that's what I will be doing.
Who at the UAW or the automakers, will come help me when I lose my job at the small company that supplies sub-assemblies to automotive suppliers goes bankrupt from the strike? We are a small company that will not cause real harm to the community when it closes and I am sure the main suppliers could bring the production inhouse or farm it out to a foreign company. My husband just retired early during the pandemic. We are now paying for my health insurance out of pocket. I don't have to say how much that is taking out of our savings. I am now sick and it may get very serious. More money out of our pockets because the incredible expensive health insurgence does not pay it all. My husband is covered due to being a member of a good union. I think the union could have been better, since he is still in monetary trouble because they do not cover spouse's health insurgence after he retires.
Marx never actually said this. It's a misqoute. However, he did actually say this: "It wishes to see only "useful things produced, but it forgets that production of too many useful things produces too large a useless population." Marx is actually conveying the idea that in capitalist society focused solely on producing "useful things" or commodities for profit, there can also be unintended consequences. When too many useful goods are produced, it can actually lead to a surplus of goods and, consequently, a surplus of people who become unemployed or "useless" in the context of the capitalist system. This is actually a critique of the potential for overproduction and the resulting social and economic problems it can create.
@@JP-fb8ni Whereas government has proven that it is incompetent to determine what is useful, and that regardless of what problem it seeks to solve, the unintended consequences of its actions always make the problem worse.
@@jgalt308 Marx's critique isn't actually specifically about government intervention but rather about the inherent contradictions within capitalist production. Capitalism, driven by profit, often results in overproduction of goods, leading to unemployment and underutilization of resources. And while government intervention can have its own issues, Marx's point was actually to highlight the systemic problems of capitalism itself.
@@JP-fb8ni Whereas history shows that the inherent contradictions as well as the unintended consequences of marxism produce even worse results. Also, what exists is NOT capitalism.

Ascending the Economic ladder of Wealth is often seen as a measure of security within a Capitalist Society. But our Systems of Social Management unveil that the Oligarchy (as a Political Class) only affords privilege to those Capitalists who aid in generating and maintaining wealth disparity. The problem of driving hierarchical wealth by incentivizing marketplace intermediation (as an opportunity for speculative investors) is that corruption will always be remunerated disproportionately higher than those with the false-beliefs in the ideal of Meritocracy. And this cognitive dissonance may contribute to a mass formation psychosis, which keeps Society within a maladaptive ethos, incapable of escaping Social and Political Dislocation. The Wealth Disparity (in any location) represents a cultural integrity somewhere on the spectrum between “an equitable Society” and “ubiquitous psychopathy”. And, in regards to Wealth Disparity and the Oligarchy, it seems our Society is accelerating towards Vengeance as the virtue behind our so-called “Rule of Law”. There is no Justice without Systemic Justice, and that requires a Revolution within or without our Institutions of Social and Economic Governance.
Under capitalism, climbing the economic ladder is often seen as a path to security. However, within our system of social management, it becomes clear that the oligarchy, as a political class, primarily benefits those capitalists who contribute to and perpetuate wealth inequality. The problem actually lies in incentivising marketplace intermediation, which favours speculative investors and also rewards corruption disproportionately over those who believe in meritocracy. This disconnect can also contribute to a mass formation psychosis, trapping society in an unadaptive ethos, unable to escape social and political turmoil. Wealth disparity, present in any location, also reflects a cultural integrity somewhere between an equitable society and widespread psychopathy. Concerning wealth disparity and the oligarchy, our society, and as you also rightly point out, does indeed appear to be moving towards valuing vengeance as a supposed virtue within our "Rule of Law." And again, as you rightly point out, true justice can only emerge from systemic justice, which, as you say, necessitates a revolution either within or outside our institutions of social and economic governance.

Now employers are giving staff an ultimatum about returning the the office when they've been working from home since the pandemic. It's all about CONTROL and POWER. We need a #GeneralStrike.
Really???? Like you are prepared for one????
@@jgalt308 No one is so I won't be alone! But nothing short of a general strike will let the corporate greedy bums running this dying world know who is really in charge.

With all these businesses getting unionized, I hope they're the first step towards turning them worker co-op.
Who knows. Maybe we’ll get some good ol syndicalism.

I love and appreciate you commentary. Thank you.
Always putting things into a digestible perspective, thank you Professor
Always a great topic, especially on Labor Day.
Thank you Prof Wolff!!!
Question: are monopolies good or bad???
The question is can the people of this planet unite and stop the combined corporate RAPE AND PILLAGING of OUR MOTHER EARTH? IF HUMANITY IS UNABLE to redirect corporate destruction of mother Earth 🌍 THEN we as a species are indeed doomed to go extinct
@@jgalt308 depends on what the monopoly is.

We can't count on employers to do the right thing. We need these things written into law, NOT written into company policy.
You seem to have missed the point Wolff was making. Whatever we win under capitalism will always be taken away. Regardless, the same capitalist government is who would "protect" the workers with such law.

The evolution of labor must be towards Worker Owned Cooperatives transacting in Bitcoin. REAL Power to the people!
Four consecutive pieces on my local CBS news were:
-Minimum wage increase for fast food workers.
-Auto workers may strike because their CEOs gave themselves a 40% raise last year.
-Writers strike in LA picketed out front of Netflix headquarters.
-And a local San Diegan in his 50s is homeless for the first time because he lived with his mother and she died and the bank took the home.

Wow that last one is a bummer. Wasn't there anything in place for the guy to continue the mortgage? I wonder if that sort of thing is possible in a will?
Great to see Professor Wolff again and glad to see an episode so focused on some of the labor action that's happened recently.
Failing to form a union, workers need to plan to buy the business. Form alliances first for leverage and support.

Great to have you back Prof Wolff
Enjoy your raise and benefits. I guess we will just be collateral damage.
Sorry I missed most of Prof Wolff's presentation. He makes complicated political/economic/historic matters easy to understand.

UAW just went on strike. Solidarity to our brothers and sisters!
More of this!!!
Thank you Professor Wolff !! 🤗 This is the exact discussion we all need to hear!😄❤️Robin PS I have been taking notes!😊
What discussion?
“The production of too many useful things results in too many useless people.”
~ Karl Marx
Marx never actually said this. It's a misqoute. However, he did actually say this:
"It wishes to see only "useful things produced, but it forgets that production of too many useful things produces too large a useless population."
Marx is actually conveying the idea that in capitalist society focused solely on producing "useful things" or commodities for profit, there can also be unintended consequences. When too many useful goods are produced, it can actually lead to a surplus of goods and, consequently, a surplus of people who become unemployed or "useless" in the context of the capitalist system. This is actually a critique of the potential for overproduction and the resulting social and economic problems it can create.
@@JP-fb8ni Whereas government has proven that it is incompetent to determine
what is useful, and that regardless of what problem it seeks to solve, the unintended
consequences of its actions always make the problem worse.
@@JP-fb8ni Whereas history shows that the inherent contradictions as well as
the unintended consequences of marxism produce even worse results.
Also, what exists is NOT capitalism.
Also Marx expected capitalism to end the rentier economy...
and he was wrong, the rentiers won.

@@jgalt308 Oh, absolutely, we humans are just baffled by our own existence, unlike those other life forms that have it all figured out, right? But hey, pondering our 'primary mission' is what makes us human, so maybe we're onto something after all. 🤔
@@jgalt308 And it's also worth noting that humans, unlike other life forms, possess a unique ability to reflect on and question their purpose and mission. There does seem to be an uptick in strike activity, which is fantastic for the people. Will it be widespread enough to get people living wages ? Or will the pressures seeking to robify the masses succeed and continue to push down wages while job qualities decline until aggregate growth is so stagnant that people demand majour concessions in the combination of minimum wages, price controls, and universal basic incomes?
