  • Tondo is Manila's biggest slum and some residents survive on just US$400 a year. Food vendors like Loida and Rado have come up with clever ways to make food that even the underprivileged can afford. These innovative cooks create crunchy and spicy chicken from leftovers, flavourful soup using unwanted pig intestines and affordable fried pork belly treats.

About Slumfood Millionaire: Embark on a mouth-watering journey through the slums of Asia, the last places on earth you would expect to find delicious foods. This unique documentary series celebrates the flavourful, and often unknown dishes made by talented cooks in the slums of Manila, Bangkok, Mumbai, Jakarta, Phnom Penh and Kota Kinabalu. Using cheap and overlooked ingredients, they cook up scrumptious dishes that are famous within the slums. Their passion and resilence prove that good food need not be expensive.

Tondo might be one of the poorest place in the Philippines but it's also a place where you can find pure and generous Filipinos, they helped each other, giving what they have to those in needs, and most importantly, they can smile regardless of how poor and hard there life was. Tondo is a poor district but here you find true Filipinos despite hardships they can still manage to show smiles in there lips and the willingness to help is always present and practiced each day.

There's also this dish in the slums called "pagpag" which roughly translates to "to dust/ shake off". It's left-over foods from restaurants/ fastfoods, usually chicken, that has been thrown away in the trash. They sift through it from the garbage dump, take up the edible parts, and cook it again into a new dish, served for very cheap prices, usually for the underprivileged. Those who serve pagpag are open that their dish came from "pagpag", and many still eat it because they are usually cooked very well, with the intention of killing off any bacteria in the heat.
I personally haven't tried it yet, and I'd probably won't mind trying it out as long as I get to witness how it's prepared and deem it safe enough for me 😅

I love how Fillipinos and other countries don't waste any food. There is always someone who is hungry so making a dish even out of intestines is much better than starvation. Theses stalls are saving the world one meal at a time.

yes, that is the reason why i dislike vegans they put too much emphasis on the condition of the animal. they're missing the point of other's perspective abt food. we DO NOT WASTE our food, its a SIN!

@@rice6682 Well said. Being extremely choosy about food is a luxury unless it's for legitimate health or religious reasons. And when I hear people criticizing the way manok are kept in cages, I feel embarrassed for them. They are so sheltered diba?

I love how the documentary is made, everything's genuine. The smiles, their daily lives - these just proved that happiness is how you define it, and helping is not just giving or donating but by providing affordable options in the neighborhood. Storyline is solid!

I’ve seen a few documentary style videos on Tondo now. In each of them, the people are smiling, friendly , inviting, children playing. They really like to talk about who they are and where they are from and what makes them happy. I know this is a slum and people say it is dangerous but honestly it looks quite lovely for the people living there. Maybe not a posh fancy city life, but still a seemingly good one all the same!

There are people who have money and there are people who are rich. You can see the most humble smile that warm the heart . Funny thing is, not only that we share borders but also language, found at least 5 similar words to Indonesian : 😄: “mangutang, bawang, sakit, asin, bayar” .. it brighten up my afternoon, when it supposed to be a visit to celebrate my birthday in Philipine but had cancelled due to corona, Hope this pandamic is soon over , much Love from Indonesia 🇲🇨

I sincerely hope that the docu people also gave this kind lady some kind of financial royalty in exchange for the time she has generously given them. A lot of media people are so stingy that they don't compensate the subjects of their docu.
An ABS CBN TV News crew once did a docu about a well-known vendor in PUP Sta Mesa in Manila. They documented the day-to-day activities of that vendor. After the docu aired on TV, the said vendor complained that the crew did not even bother to give her any amount as compensation for all her and her family's troubles during the making of the docu.
