I saw an extended interview with 1st Lieutenant DeBlanc. This video about him is very accurate. As a measure of his bravery, he knew when he launched off that day he would not make it back because of the fuel leak, but continued on knowing he'd be bailing out over water. He told the flight to watch for his raft on their flight back. He later said he continued on in the mission rather than turn back because his job was to protect the bombers. It was that simple, and that brave. Jefferson DeBlanc is a legend amongst combat aviators.
You'd be surprised how often we [myself and other, much better men I knew who served in combat over various wars] adopt that attitude. There comes a point of time where you no longer fear the outcome- other people depend on you to survive, and you'd like to think... well, you have to think, that they feel the same way about you. Whether it is protecting bombers or throwing man after man into the line of fire to raise the odds of survival for a wounded friend, I've always said "you don't know who you really are unless you're willing to die for a 'maybe.'"
"We're all scared. You hid in that ditch because you think there's still hope. But Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. On January 31, 1943, despite mechanical problems with his aircraft, he pressed forward with a mission and shot down five Japanese aircraft in minutes before being shot down himself. ...he...BAILED OUT...from another Wildcat, not "ejected"...!!! In 1943 fighter planes didn't have ejection seats...yet the modern layout for an ejection seat was first introduced by the Romanian inventor Anastase Dragomir in the late 1920s. The design of his "catapult-able cockpit" was patented at the French Patent Office and featured a parachuted cell (a dischargeable seat from an aircraft or other vehicle). It was successfully tested on 25 August 1929 at the Paris-Orly Airport near Paris and in October 1929 at Băneasa, near Bucharest. The design was perfected during World War II. Prior to this, the only means of escape from an incapacitated aircraft was to jump clear ("bail out"), and in many cases this was difficult due to injury, the difficulty of egress from a confined space, g forces, the airflow past the aircraft, and other factors.

You guys did great job on graphic improvement. Also, the story is great, I love the hearing the native languages you present here.

...he...BAILED OUT...from another Wildcat, not "ejected"...!!!
Who remembers the old thumbnail?
What was it?
That was SO metal at 4:34 when the narrator says "seek and destroy" and the pilot is upside down so its showing a pentagram on his helmet.
Excellent video. But I wonder how the Solomon island natives could speak Filipino. Lol. Very nice episode just the same.
