- Aponogeton Ulvaceus: How to Flower & Care For This Beautiful Aquarium Plant & It's Hybrid Strains. Water parameters and best practices for propagation of the larger species of aponogetons, along with the taxonomic and botanical history of these lovely freshwater aquatic plants.
These self pollinating flowers are an evolutionary wonder, and in this case, this humble plant from Madagascar is a low light and low tech favorite within fish keeping and aquascaping Hobbies. Thank YOU for tuning in. Y'all come back now!
I just got this plant a few weeks ago and it’s putting off a flower. I never knew it flowers! Can’t wait to see what color I get.
Congratulations! Fun times
I just bought one of these bulbs and I have a flower opening. So nice to learn about it. Thanks love your knowledge.🐟🌿😊👍
👏🤗🌿🐟🌱
I didbt know it flowered either! Mine had this long stem growing & once it got to the surface level, it started flowering lol. I was shocked 😆
Sadly I had to do a bleach bath bc of bacterial infection.
I lost half my bulbs over time. Just got new in today tho!!
Yes! Super cool looking too!
Great info, I always love your talks on plants! 👍🙂
Great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love this style of video! - Little Bobby
Thanks Alex. I have to look for some of these. Love the flowers.
Wow I love learning about this stuff with you! And this book is such a valuable resource too! I love the way you're able to "paint a picture" of the things you're talking about! It's things like that and things like saying "the smell of a laundry sheet" or something descriptive, that really makes things stick out in my mind and makes it memorable for me! And I do know what the smell of the post-it note stickers smell like 🤣👍 I really enjoyed the video and loved learning about this plant! Thank you for sharing and I hope you have a wonderful day!🙏💯🌱🐟🌿💚
Glad you liked it! Have a great day!
I was trying to figure out what kind of plant I had as I was sure it was this one but it didn’t look like the pictures I was finding online. Your video made me positive this was it. Thank you!
So glad to hear it! Best of luck to you and the plant!
Great video 👍
Very well done ! Thank you Alex This is one of the most informative spot lights on a plant I've ever seen !
Thanks Chubz! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I bet you'd like my java fern, cabomba and Sußwassertang videos too, if you like ridiculously independent and overly long videos like this haha
@@Fishtory I did enjoy it and I will be checking them out for sure !👍
Great and comprehensive video. Thank you!
100% Glad someone else is this nerdy too haha
One of my favorite plants! Mine is flowering now!
Very cool! What colors?
Always educational, thanks Alex. Just ordered one of the Aponogeton Ulvaceous bulbs. 🤞
Right on! They're great
Mmmm dryer sheets and post it notes, great video Alex. I was thinking about getting water hawthorn (apontogeton distachyum) for my outdoor tubs
Oh definitely get some! And also, thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful plant. Mine already has 3 flowers and another one on the way.
Score!
I have moved some dwarf Sagittarius from the back of my tank ( sold to me mistakenly as val ) and replanted it at the front . I am filling that area with bulb plants including aponogeton.
Wonderful
Pretty flowers and that’s interesting about the seeds. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 😃
i just got some bulbs today this video, is super informative it's great!
I'm glad it is of use for you! Welcome to the channel and make yourself at home hehe. Cheers
@@Fishtory i'm totally obsessed with your channel currently, thanks for the replies, makes my day ☺️
Looking good today Alex, such interesting information. Thanks, your content is a much needed distraction stuck in bed with a lupus flare. I always heard these pronounced with a hard G back in the 90's when I started with fish. These days people seem to use a soft G. Who knows?
I'm sorry to hear that! I understand it all too well. Rest up and I hope the flare dies down soon
just bought one, no flowers yet, but hasn't died yet either!! i always learn so much watching your videos. no go out there and get a hair cut, you look like you've been living under a rock, jkjk total rocker look
Covid19 look lol
Good video!
Thank you, very much!
If you watch (and enjoy) a 20min video about aponegetons, you may be an aquarium nerd. I'm guilty. Lol
Excellent! Haha...oh, so true
Fantastic plants! Thank you for sharing this! Do you know if they're available in Australia?
I believe so
Can I put the bulb of Aponogeton completely inside soil or it has to be partially inside soil? I had put my Aponogeton plants bulb completly inside soil (in dirted aquarium setup) . I grows well for about a month but now no new leafs are growing. Also the old leaves are struggling with algae. Have I done wrong in putting the bulb completely inside sand/soil? Please guide. Thanks
So I’m kind of annoyed that petco sells the aponogeton ulvaceus bulb as a “Betta Bulb”. My Betta, Floyd, lives in a warm water aquarium kept at 73-80 degrees Fahrenheit… my endler’s and guppy’s also live in warm water Aquariums -at pretty much the same tropical fish water parameters. What would happen if I put this aponogeton ulvaceus bulb in a warm water aquarium ?? Learning the hard way gets expensive. 🤷🏻♀️
They do okay if in sand and burried an inch or two. But yeah they dont like really warm water
I got two Aponogeton longiplumulosus bulbs on separate occasions. Neither did anything, other than grow fungus. My Corys seemed to enjoy eating it, at least 🤷♂️
Some percentage of them are duds unfortunately 😕
Just a little help :
It is NOT : apon ge ton !
It is = a po no ge ton
Good video 👍
Lol 😆 yes it you see earlier videos and also later videos you see me pronounce it correctly. However i have French viewers that swear it's apon ge ton, and i did a video like this. But boy did it annoy everyonev else lol
apononogeton sp purple is the best
I got several of these from PetCo sold as dormant Betta bulbs. A few sprouted into what clearly appear to be A. ulvaceus, but they have a more extreme, very unique leaf-type. Instead of the wavy leaf edge all the photos seem to show, these have complete spiraling, cork-screw shaped leaves on fairly short stems. Very showy. They are in 5 gal tanks in gravel (no soil) and maybe 2+ months old now and in full flower. I have two like these in bloom and have cross-pollinated the blooms so am hoping for viable seeds to see if this cork-screw trait is inheritable. On another note - do you ever sell any of your Rainbow snakeskin patterned enders? I'd love to play with some of those.
I do in spring summer fall...usually locally, but if a group of people are interested at the same time and I go buy supplies for shipping all at once, sometimes I ship them also
@@Fishtory Is there a way to email you my info to get in contact with when you might have a group you can ship? I'm in central Florida.
I had bought a container with three Aponogeton Ulvaceus from PetSmart last July. They grew really fast, and then died off in October. I took the bulbs out, and kept them in a small bin in a sun room. They didn't come back until June of this year, and 2 of the bulbs again grew very fast and are still putting out new leaves. I did get several flowers from one of them this year, but did not know about the seeds so I will look out for that next time. Is an extended dormancy normal?
Yes, for most bulb plants this is the natural cycle for up to 5 or 6 years easily
Great video!!! What are the medicinal properties of the lant and usage?
Thank you. I hope to cover the medicinal uses of a bunch of aquatic plants in a video soon. So thank you!
@@Fishtory Awesome! I've been looking for some good information, can't wait!
What type of guppy fish are them in the the tank that you had the plant floating that grew a leaf over night. It was in the tank that you focused on most?
Rainbow tiger endlers and fire& ice female guppies. Im working on creating a buttercup rainbow tiger
What do you do after it dies back? Leave it to sprout again later?
You can do that a few times, but then it will eventually die and need to sprout a new growth and a new red ball that turns to a bulb also, or the seed can turn into a bulb after germinating.
Depending on the species, some people also dry them out (just like when you buy them in packs at the store) then rehydrate whenever you want. Which simulates the dry season.
@@Fishtory thank you! I have a aponogeton capuronii and it is dying back for the first time. I just removed the dead leaves. I suppose I will leave it in the tank for now.
Mine have all bloomed then died off pretty much. I do use root tabs.
Ahh yeah, some do. Like I mentioned, only 20 to 30 of the plants that flower white or yellow are able to self pollinate

What is it with americans not being able to pronounce aponogeton?!?!?! THERE'S 3 'O's there dammit!
I got a bulb on eBay but I think I didn't know what I was doing with it so by the time I wondered why it never put out leaves, it was already mushy. I'll have to try again sometime now I rescaped my 20 tall.
Some % of bulbs just fail naturally too...unfortunately.
